Archives: John Lennon shot dead by Mark David Chapman

Paul McCartney Talks About John Lennon - The Jonathan Ross Show

(Originally published by the Daily News on Dec. 09, 1980. This story was written by Patrick Doyle, Robert Lane and Hugh Bracken.)

Former Beatle John Lennon, the 40-year-old lead singer of the most popular rock group in history, was shot to death last night as he stepped from a limousine outside his home in the Dakota, an exclusive apartment building on Central Park West and 72d St.

Police arrested a suspect, described as a local screwball, minutes after the shooting and charged him with Lennons murder. The smirking suspect, identified as Mark David Chapman, 25, of Hawaii, was seen in the vicinity of the Dakota for several hours before the shooting and reportedly had hounded Lennon for an autograph several times in the last three or four days.

Lennon and his Japanese-born wife, Yoko Ono, were returning to their apartment from a recording session when the shots rang out.

Lennon was taken to Roosevelt Hospital in a police radio car and was pronounced dead on arrival in the emergency room.

We tried to save him, said Dr. Stephen Lynn, director of emergency services. We opened his chest and massaged his heart, but he was virtually dead when they brought him in. Lennons body was then taken to the Bellevue Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

Police said Lennon was shot several times at close range inside the large iron gate on the W. 72d St. side of the building and was bleeding profusely when he was placed in the radio car.

Lynn said Lennon was brought into the emergency room a few minutes before 11 p.m. and was pronounced dead at 11:07 p.m. Extensive resuscitation efforts were made, and despite transfusion and other methods, he could not be revived, Lynn said.

The doctor added that significant damage had been done to a major vessel in the chest. There was a massive blood loss.

Police Officer James Moran, who drove the car that took Lennon to the hospital, said the singer had no last words.

A witness to the shooting, Sean Strub, said he saw Chapman walk back and forth at the scene of the shooting and then drop a gun. Police said they later recovered a .38-caliber revolver near the courtyard.

Strub said Chapman, whom he described as pudgy and dressed in a brown jacket, scuffled with the police immediately after they arrived on the scene. Chapman almost had a smirk on his face, Strub said.

A woman who identified herself as Nina McFadden of W. 94th St. said she heard the shots and then watched as Chapman paced back and forth and threw his jacket to the ground.

I saw John and Yoko step out of the limousine, she said. They walked inside the gate. Then I heard four or five shots. They were loud, ear-shattering.

I heard Yoko scream, Help, help. Help him, McFadden said.

It was then that I saw the man with the gun and watched him drop it from his side to the ground, McFadden said.

She said she then saw a man walk over to the building security guard and heard him say, I would leave here if I were you.

Six policemen put Lennon into the car for the mile ride to the hospital.

The sobbing Yoko, who has told interviewers she is 47, was very distraught and couldnt believe Lennon was dead, according to police and a large crowd of fans who gathered silently outside the hospital emergency room as word of Lennons death spread. Several hundred persons maintained a vigil outside the Dakota. Most carried radios and listened to news accounts of the singers death.

Barbara Tyree, a maid who was taking care of two children on the ground floor of the apartment building, said she was shocked by the shots and terrified when she looked out the window into the courtyard.

The courtyard was suddenly filled with people, she said. Its terrible, terrible.

Ruth Ford, who lives in the fifth floor of the Dakota, said she was writing Christmas cards when she heard the shots.

I looked down into the yard from my kitchen, she said. I immediately called the police and Roosevelt Hospital.

She said she knew Lennon and Yoko but did not know Lennon was the shooting victim until the elevator man told her.

Lennons producer, Jack Douglas, who arrived at the hospital shortly after Lennon was pronounced dead, said the singer was scheduled soon to put the finishing touches on his next album.

Lennons latest album Double Fantasy, cut with his wife, was released about a month ago and signaled his comeback after five years in retirement. It received generally good reviews, and the albums hit single, Starting Over, soared to the top of the pop charts.

The Beatles, disbanded in 1970 after seven phenomenal years together. The last time Lennon met with any of his fellow Beatles was Thanksgiving Day, when he and Ringo Starr dined at the Dakota.

Man shot in San Jose over Raiders-49ers dispute

Every 49ers Regular Season Touchdown 2013-2014

The atmosphere for the San Francisco 49ers-Oakland Raiders game inside the stadium was relatively calm, despite concerns there would be problems between the rival fans.

Outside the stadium, however, there was a shooting over the Raiders-49ers game.

A man was shot in a dispute that "is game-related for sure," San Jose Police told the San Jose Mercury News. Police responded to a 5:15 p.m. call from a restaurant in San Jose, and found a man who was shot. He was transported to the hospital with what the Mercury News reported were "life-threatening wounds."

Several people were detained after police arrived.

The Raiders beat the 49ers 24-13 on Sunday. The Mercury News story said officials worried about the scene at the game because of brawls that broke out in the crowd at the last three Raiders-49ers games. The Mercury News reported there was "relative peace" at the stadium.

NFL Playoff Picture Week 15: Kansas City Chiefs" Scenarios

NFL Playoff Picture: Things to look for in Week 14

Getty Images

The playoff scenarios for the Kansas City Chiefs are pretty simple heading into Week 15. They can either win their last three games while receiving a tiny bit of help, or win two of their last three and pray as hard as they can.

Kansas City fans shouldnt even worry about the latter scenario. A ticket to the playoffs with another loss is about as likely as simultaneously winning the lottery, being struck by lighting and attacked by a shark. The Chiefs just need to win out.

On the bright side, Kansas City has won (and lost) all the right games this season to gain a good position in tiebreakers. If they win out, theyll have the head-to-head tiebreaker on the Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills, San Diego Chargers and Pittsburgh Steelers. Winning out would also leave the Chiefs with an 8-4 record in the AFC.

The only remaining Wild Card contender that has an opportunity to top that are the 7-6 Houston Texans. The Chiefs need them to lose just one of their final three games. The Texans remaining schedule puts them on the road against the Indianapolis Colts, followed by home games against the Baltimore Ravens and Jacksonville Jaguars.

So this Sunday, nobody will be cheering harder for the Colts than Chiefs fans. It may be a little awkward considering Indy has eliminated Kansas City from the playoffs in four of the last six times theyve made it, but Im sure KC fans will take a bone from whoever will throw it to them.

Most importantly, the Chiefs have to take care of business at home against the Oakland Raiders, on the road against the Steelers, and at home again versus the Chargers. The ice-cold Chiefs need to get hot now.

And somebody, anybody, needs to give Andy Reid and Alex Smith some tips on how to operate a two-minute drill. Kansas City has had several opportunities to comeback in losses this season, but most attempts have been a mix of sad, frustrating and confusing.

The Chiefs can beat any team and lose to any team. Reid needs turn them back into the squad that won seven of eight against a gauntlet of playoff contenders, because its do-or-die time from here on out for Kansas City.

Detroit Lions" Reggie Bush: "There"s some form of injustice that"s going on ...

Detroit Lions Comeback Victory against Saints | LIVE 10-19-14

DETROIT -- Reggie Bush is the son of a San Diego cop. He grew up around the police force, has great respect for the men and women who patrol our country"s streets, and understands the unique difficulties of living life in harm"s way.

But he has no sympathy for the New York City cop who killed Eric Garner with a chokehold while trying to make a July arrest.

Bush says he has been upset for weeks about the Eric Garner situation, and all that anger came to a head last week when a grand jury declined to indict the officer. So he decided to protest.

The Detroit Lions tailback scribbled "I Can"t Breathe" in big, black letters across the front of his blue warmup shirt before Sunday"s 34-17 win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Garner"s death was caught on tape, and his last moments were spent saying "I can"t breathe" to the officer who clenched his throat.

"I"ve always been the kid who is reserved and stays out of stuff like that, but I just felt like these last couple weeks, I"ve been really upset about what"s happening from a police standpoint," Bush told MLive.com after the game.

"I don"t know all the details or facts with the Ferguson issue, or the Eric Garner issue, but I know there"s some form of injustice that"s going on. And it really affected me."

Why did it hit Bush so hard?

"I don"t really have an answer why it affected me so much. It just did, to see that," Bush said. "It"s just really unfortunate, and so I thought that would be my way of protesting a little bit."

Bush said he thought about making his protest during last week"s nationally televised Thanksgiving game against the Chicago Bears, but he ended up not playing due to an ankle issue.

He returned against Tampa Bay, after missing five of the past seven games, and rushed eight times for 26 yards in the win. But he made his loudest statement before the game ever started.

Bush has suffered through an injury plagued season and is no longer among the league"s best players, but he still has star power and knew his pregame gesture could ignite more national conversation about what he sees as an injustice.

"That was the point," he said. "It"s unfortunate to see that on video. To watch that on video.

"I just felt sad, embarrassed, disgusted (when I saw it). Hurt for his family that he died that way. That"s just terrible."

Bush"s mother, Denise Griffin, is a 20-year veteran of the San Diego police force, and currently serves as a sheriff"s deputy. Bush said he didn"t talk to her about his pregame protest, but knew she would support him for it.

"I think everybody in some way, shape or form feels that the situation was not handled the right way," Bush said. "No matter who you are, what your skin color is, religious preference, sexual preference, I think when you see that video, everybody feels like that was a terrible situation and probably not handled the right way."

Reggie Bush did not clear the shirt with coach Jim Caldwell, but Caldwell, a child of the 1960s, said he didn"t care and supports his tailback"s peaceful protest.

"I grew up in the "60s, where everybody was socially conscious," Caldwell said. "I believe in it. I would be a hypocrite if I stood up here and told you any differently.

"More than likely, some of those protests that Dr. King and some of the others took part in, non-violent protests, is the reason why I am standing here in front of you today. So absolutely, no question about it. I don"t mind it."

Bush"s gesture is the latest in a series of protests by professional athletes.

Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose wore a "I Can"t Breathe" shirt before an NBA game on Saturday, and other NFL players followed suit Sunday. Browns cornerback Johnson Bademosi warmed up with a similar shirt, while St. Louis Rams offensive lineman Davin Joseph wrote "I Can"t Breathe" on his cleats.

That all follows a group of five St. Louis Rams who recently took the field with the "don"t shoot" pose. The St. Louis police later demanded a "very public apology."

As for Bush, he went on to carry the ball eight times for 26 yards in his return against Tampa Bay. He said he did "nick up" the ankle, but felt OK and is pleased with his progress.

"Felt good to just finish a game without any setbacks or getting carried off the field," he said. "It just felt good to be out there playing."

How NJIT went from the worst team in college basketball to stunning Michigan ...

NJIT Fabulous First Years - 2014

Jim Engles hugged the sportswriter in the locker room, which is always a pretty good sign that you"re desperate for a victory. And, well, the word desperate doesn"t really even begin to sum it up that night in January 2009.

His NJIT Highlanders had not won a college basketball game in 702 days, a record 51 straight losses, and the Engles had heard the whispers around college basketball. NJIT was never very good as a Division 2 program. What in the world were they thinking moving up to Division 1?

So finally, on that cold night in Newark, Engles tasted victory with a win over Bryant University, and his speech sounded like a clip of Knute Rockne. You want the definition of a winner? he told his team, his voice cracking with emotion. You are! You deserve this! Now you know what the feeling is like!

I thought about that scene on Saturday afternoon as the Big Ten Network cameras kept flashing to Engles, the picture of poise, as he coached those Highlanders in their latest supposedly impossible test against No. 17 Michigan. If you didn"t know any better, you would have thought the Highlanders were the team with all the talent and the Final Four potential, and not the mighty Wolverines.

If you didn"t know any better, watching them hit 58.7 percent of their shots and have twice as many assists (16 to 8) as their big-name opponent, you would"ve thought they were the ones with the limitless ceiling.

And that, of course, is the way Engles wanted it. His team, just 2-5 on the season and coming off a loss to Massachusetts-Lowell, had come to Ann Arbor and left with a 72-70 victory the most stunning result in the young college basketball season and one that likely won"t be topped.

More on NJIT"s upset NJIT coach: "I sort of penciled this one as an "L""

Twitter reaction: Jumping on the NJIT bandwagon

Maybe it"s hope for Rutgers, who will be playing that same Michigan team as part of its inaugural Big Ten season, but it"s hard to feel much of that after Seton Hall buried the Scarlet Knights, 81-54, in Newark.

Mostly, you just feel good for the little guy. NJIT was 13-16 a year ago, 16-13 the year before that, always the team that fills out the December schedule for the big-name teams. Always the line in the schedule checked off as a W months before the ball is even tipped.

Not this time. Not with Damon Lynn scoring 20 points and hitting a huge 3-pointer with less than three minutes left. Not with Willis Winfield and Ky Howard each scoring 17 points as the Highlanders made 11 of 17 shots from behind the arc.

Not with Engles smartly doing what so many coaches won"t do and fouling with a three-point lead and four seconds to play, taking the potential of an upset-ruining 3 from Michigan out of the equation.

The buzzer sounded and Crisler Arena went silent, other than the celebrating Highlanders. Engles looked dazed as he shook hands with John Beilein, a former Division 2 coach who probably could appreciate the moment from the other perspective.

NJIT, a program that once lost 51-straight games, had beaten mighty Michigan. You want the definition of a winner? Engles asked his team that night six years ago. Sometimes, you find it where you least expect it.

Mary Landrieu Falls to Bill Cassidy in Louisiana Runoff

Mary Landrieu Thinks She and Obama Are Unpopular In Louisiana Because The State Is Racist And Sexist

Senate Republicans expanded their majority in the upcoming Congress on Saturday when Republican Rep. Bill Cassidy defeated Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu in a runoff election.

The Associated Press called the race for Cassidy, who enjoyed substantial help from outside groups determined to knock off another Democratic incumbent senator this election cycle.

Democrats, however, had largely given up on Landrieu once it became clear they no longer would retain control of the Senate. After the November 4 primary, liberal groups aired just 100 television ads in support of the three-term senator, whereas conservative groups aired 6,000, according to the Center for Public Integrity.

Cassidy stuck to the GOP"s successful strategy of tying Landrieu with President Barack Obama in a state Obama lost by 17 points in his 2012 re-election. He repeatedly said she voted with the president 97 percent of the time and painted her as the "deciding" vote for the Affordable Care Act.

Exit polls from the primary showed troubling signs for Landrieu, even though she won a plurality of the vote running against Cassidy and another Republican. She earned the support of just 18 percent of white voters, significantly less than the 33 percent she got during her 2008 election.

The daughter of former New Orleans mayor and the sister of the current one has come out on top of tough races before, but this election she struggled to define herself as an independent-minded Democrat.

Her message during the runoff election was that Senate control has already been decided and voters must now choose who is best for the Pelican State. Landrieu told supporters that replacing her with Cassidy is like replacing popular New Orlean Saints quarterback Drew Brees with a rookie.

But her veteran leadership was not enough to pass the Keystone XL pipeline last month when the bill failed to get Senate approval by one vote.

"I came here 18 years ago, fighting to get here, fighting to stay here, and I"m going to fight for the people of my state until the day that I leave I hope that will not be soon," a defeated Landrieu said after the vote. "There"s only joy in the fight. Where I come from, we just never talk about quitting, and we don"t talk about whining."

Landrieu"s loss means Southern states no longer have a Democrat representing them in the Senate, a remarkable shift in a region the party used to firmly control.

Oregon Ducks dominate Arizona Wildcats in Pac-12 Championship: Live chat ...

Greatest Plays in Oregon Football History - New! (HD)

SANTA CLARA, Calif. What seemed unlikely in October turned inevitable by December, as the Oregon Ducks and Arizona Wildcats meet to play for the Pac-12 title today at Levi"s Stadium.

The game kickedoff at 6 p.m.

Remember, back on Oct. 2, the Wildcats (10-2, 7-2 Pac-12, College Football Playoff No. 7) rolled into Autzen Stadium and beat the Ducks (11-1, 8-1 Pac-12, No. 2 CFP) 31-24 in an upset broadcast on national television on a Thursday night. At the time, Oregon"s season seemed to have come off the rails. The offensive line was riddled with injuries. The defense was porous. There were composure issues.

That one loss, the second to Arizona in two seasons, sowed seeds of doubt. Would this be a season of coulda-woulda-shoulda? Would the Ducks go into decline in head coach Mark Helfrich"s second season?

No. The Ducks steadied themselves and went on to dominate the Pac-12 North, reeling off seven wins in a row and punctuating the regular season with a blowout win against Oregon State in the Civil War.

Meanwhile, competition in the Pac-12 South wasn"t nearly as clear-cut. Arizona"s march to the title game included a 28-26 home loss against USC and a 17-7 loss at UCLA. The South Division wasn"t decided until the last week of the regular season when Stanford spoiled UCLA"s hopes with a 31-10 upset win and the Wildcats won a wild game, holding off Arizona State 42-35 to clinch the berth.

Did you see this coming? Were you hoping for a rematch? Do you have a score prediction? Join the comments thread below for game updates and a lively Pac-12 Championship game discussion.
