Pretty Little Liars: How The "A" Stole Christmas

9 Things You Didn"t Know About "Pretty Little Liars"

Pretty Little Liars could easily keep its holiday episodes outside of the shows continuity (although it would mean Adam Lambert hitting on Aria on the murder train would be just wishful thinking). Its the route the networks sitcoms take, and in a lot of ways, Pretty Little Liars is in fact a situational comedy. Then theres The Fosters, which just included a flashback (that fits into past continuity without doing too much work), bookended by the shows current major storyline. Say what you will about Pretty Little Liars, but by going half-assed isnt really its style.

That inability to go half-assed, however, often creates a problem for the show: It likes to do too much, even when it cant possibly follow through on the goals it sets for itself. This is especially true when Pretty Little Liars decides to go the supernatural route, instead of the incredible, but still somewhat realistic, explanations. Its the Ravenswood approach versus Monas adrenalized hyper-reality approach.

Back in episode 11, No One Here Can Love Or Understand Me, Pretty Little Liars more or less closed the book on the Ravenswood chapter in Calebs life with the Ouija board. That show had ghosts, deals with the devil, and the Grunwald, and although it was fun while it lasted, it was never really part of Pretty Little Liars world. The closest Pretty Little Liars ever got to that was back in This Is A Dark Ride, when Ashley Marin met a ghost girl after perhaps five too many bottles of wine on Halloween. But How The A Stole Christmas decides that none of that is enough and has Alison be haunted by her (still cryptic in the afterlife) mother and the ghost corpse of Mona Vanderwaal. In what at first looks like it will be an homage to A Christmas Carol (which plays during the Christmas festivities at Spencers place) is instead a poorly-constructed excuse to throw out foreshadowing and symbolism with regards to Alisons eventual demise. Again.

Somehow, its both too much and too little in this episode. The problem with the storylinebesides the fact that it goes full-tilt supernatural in a show that doesnt do thatis that its one that should demand the full attention of the show. A show doing A Christmas Carol shenanigans usually makes that the episode and for good reason. Instead, Pretty Little Liars takes a little out of column A and a little out of column M to get this all done, while the in between refuses to react to this. Even Alison herself doesnt react differently to these ghost visits (or mental breakdowns) in between their occurrences.

Hanna: Wishes dont come true, Emily. If they did, people wouldnt die.

Emily: Im still holding out hope.

Spencer: Hope is a dirty four letter word.

    Aria: [SILENCE]

These three lines (and Aria not contributing) are the most for all four of these characters, respectively. Hannas grief tends to come out in the form of anger, Emily is often too optimistic (and G*d love her, but a little oblivious) for her own good, Spencer has to make everything intense, and Aria still doesnt know shes on a show called Pretty Little Liars. Out of character isnt a phrase thats used often when it comes to this show, and that solid characterization gives the show a lot of free passes.

Unfortunately, that characterization is what also has: Hanna threaten a (terrible) child, Emily realize at the very last minute she should have told everyone that Cece was in New York that night, Spencer formulate a dangerous plan featuring her and the Liar whos not known for her quick thinking (Hanna confuses gesture and jester here) , and Aria go to Emily for the Alison/Santa front instead of just bursting in on them and getting definitive proof on who Alisons gentleman caller is.

Again, there is a lot going on in this episode.

It all starts when the lawyer handling Monas estate shows up with a file for Hanna; it contains a map of Alisons tricked out house and a letter basically asking her to take down Alison. Spencer is out on bail, and the Liars realize this could be the key to pinning Alison down for Bethanys murder, Monas murder, being A, 9/11, Big Foot, and aliens in Roswell. Alison is throwing a party on Christmas Eve, and that will be when they strike. The gangs all here, with Ezra, Paige, Caleb, Lucas, and Toby (who gets to pay tribute Rear Window this episode) all declaring their allegiances to the one true queens: the Liars.

Before the party, the episode does well to remind the audience that Emily hates Sydney and Jenna, Aria and Ezra no longer care about their inappropriate relationship being public knowledge, and Alison has absolutely no problem replacing her friends when they abandon her. Theres a big moment in Sydney and Jenna becoming new members of Alisons squad, but even they make it clear that its becauseunlike an alarming number of Rosewood residentstheyre not dumb and they want to be safe. Its something the Liars have never really quite gotten a handle on, and even though Sydney and Jenna are still clearly not the villains of the piece (even they believe the current theory that Ali killed Mona), Emily refuses to believe them:

Sydney: Jennas not a bad person. You just wouldnt know that because Alison convinced you that she was the enemy.

Again, Pretty Little Liars holiday episodes could totally be without consequence, but because theyre not, they often manage to bring up good conversation points outside of the overarching plots. Lets be real: What has Jenna done to any of the girls to make them hate her?* Aria pretended to be Anita to stalk her. Spencer went into a blind fugue state and also stalked her to blind school. Emily probably would have hooked up with her if it werent for Alison. Hanna slapped her in a restroom. Alison blinded her, and the girls not only were accessories to that crime but they continued to go to bat for Alison until about two episodes before this one.

Emilys refusal to even take a step back and think about how Alison framed the girls opinions of Jenna (as well as what Jenna has really ever even done to them and why) is actually another big part of the episodes problem. Besides just being congested without giving all of the plots enough of their own focuswhich is also a symptom of the near-the-end merry Christmas montagethe characters are barely thinking here. Lapses of logic are of course needed for Pretty Little Liars to sustain itself for as long as it has and will, but now that the show is without a living version of Mona, these characters have to think for themselves again. They cant always rely on letters from beyond-the-grave, and they cant just start leaving their phones while theyre investigating the suspect As house. The latter is even more frustrating that the Emily/Sydney/Jenna situation in this episode, because this is a show where phones are practically the fifth lead of the series. Hanna leaving her phone behind is suspense for suspenses sake, something the show is much better than at this point in its run. Pretty Little Dummies has a nice ring to it, but its not what anyone signed up for.

And to top it all off, this moment happens and cant be undone:

There are ghost corpses, omniscient cyberbullies, and towns that time forgot with doppelganger death pacts, but the one thing I will truly put my foot down is the lengths this show goes in this episode when it comes to ultimate fan-pandering, by essentially implying that the Hastings house turned into a s*x palace on Christmas Day. Plus, the fact that no ones parents are aroundeven the Hastingsisnt as easy to believe as the show would like the audience to believe. Why any of these girls parents would leave them behind (Emily is the only one who gives an excuse) in the worlds most dangerous town outside of the DC Universe is impossible to either explain or comprehend. For that, the MVPs of the episode are Paiges parents, who dont think Rosewoods a safe place anymore. Wake up and pick up the shovel, peopleRosewood, PA is h**l on earth.

    Stray observations:

    • *I am aware that Jenna raped Toby, but: 1. That rarely, if ever, comes up when the girls list their grievances with Jenna (her being creepy is at the top of the list) and 2. Honestly, based on everything weve ever seen from Jenna, I still think thats the most inconsistent part of her character.
    • This review might feel all over the place, but thats because I was hoping to channel my inner How The A Stole Christmas.
    • This episode confirms it, but shifting Mona into the role of the (actually) dead friend who needs avenging is one of the better ideas the show has had. It doesnt just keep the show fresh: It makes a lot more sense than Alison really ever did. Mona, even at her most adrenalized hyper-reality driven state, is an inherently likable (or at least, understandable) character, especialyl compared to Alison. Alison flashbacks tended to lead to questions like Why did anyone want to be friends with her? or Do you think the whole town lined up to kill her? Already, the first Mona flashback has something those Alison flashbacks were missing: Its genuinely heartbreaking.
    • So, Detective Holbrook may be just as bad as every other adult male in Rosewood, huh? Allow me to differ to my notes on this one: Youre on my list, Aria. The naughty one. NO NO NO NO NO NO DETECTIVE SEAN FARIS, YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO BE THE LAST OF A DYING BREED...Thats a pretty dress. Tell Ezra I think he has good taste. *June Diane Raphael voice* So upsetting
    • Cece Drake is back, and thats great because it means that Bruce might make a reappearance.
    • The worst part of the outwardly fabulous ghost corpse Mona is that she didnt come out and say Alison killed her. Because Alison clearly didnt kill her and the show wants to drag out that reveal for as long as possible.
    • Merry Christmas, b*****s. -A

Patriots" planning for Super Bowl requires taking long view

ESPN First Take : Bill Belichick sits Patriots rookie Jonas Gray for practice foul-up

Its December dj vu all over again, as the inimitable Yogi Berra might say. The Patriots are peaking and impressing. Theyre getting ready to plop on AFC East Champions caps. Travel plans are being made for the latest version of the Roman Numeral Rumble, better known as Super Bowl XLIX.

This season feels different, though, because the Patriots have a defense that isnt being claimed as dependents on Tom Bradys tax return. Led by hired-gun cornerbacks Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner, the Patriots secondary can cover receivers like Saran Wrap. The Patriots arent simply bending on defense. Theyre making air travel as uncomfortable and inconvenient for some of the NFLs upper-crust quarterbacks as it is for the rest of us.

Ask Peyton Manning, Andrew Luck, and Philip Rivers, whose San Diego Chargers were shut out in the second half Sunday.

The Patriots finally have a defense that appears built to win a big game when the offense falters. Good thing, because there is a common thread that runs through New Englands bitter postseason disappointments since 2007 the inability to stretch the field in the passing game. Since 2007, every Patriots playoff loss has lacked a completion of 40 yards or more. The longest is a 36-yard pass to Wes Welker in the 2010 AFC Divisional playoff loss to the hated Jets.

The lack of a long game reared its head in the last two weeks, a 26-21 loss to the Green Bay Packers and Sundays 23-14 victory over the Chargers, as the Patriots have been held under 30 points and 400 yards of offense. Brady didnt attempt a single pass of 20 yards of more against San Diego, according to the football analysis site Pro Football Focus.

Playoff teams eventually wise up to the Patriots precision passing attack. They contest the short, quick throws that are the metier of the Brady-led offense and dare the Patriots to throw the ball down the field. Rather than death by paper cuts, they demand a series of butcher knife prime cuts.

Its the blueprint for taking down Brady and the Patriots, no matter the gaudy numbers they put up in the regular season. Make them beat you down the field and outside the numbers.

Its why the Patriots have imported players such as Chad Ochocino, Brandon Lloyd, and now Brandon LaFell to try to counter the strategy.

LaFell has not disappointed, gaining entree into Bradys circle of trust and putting up career numbers. But the Patriots passing game remains a put-put outfit that chugs along with remarkable reliability, not a high-horsepower attack that can smoke its wheels and go from zero to 60 yards.

Since the departure of Randy Moss in 2010 via trade, the Patriots have lacked the ability to take the top off a defense, stretch the field, or any other cliche you want to use for what is commonly known as the deep ball.

Its the one tool that Bill Belichicks Swiss Army Knife of a team doesnt possess.

Yes, the key play in the Patriots gutty victory over the Chargers on Sunday was a 69-yard touchdown pass to Julian Edelman, the Patriots longest pass play of the season. The ball traveled about 17 yards in the air before Edelman caught it and took it to the house.

Nearly all of the Patriots longest pass plays this season are catch-and-run jobs. LaFells 56-yard touchdown against the Buffalo Bills in Week 6 was on a deep out that traveled about 20 yards in the air. Rob Gronkowskis 46-yard catch against the Bears in Week 8 was a smash-and-dash tour de force.

The Patriots rank sixth in the NFL in yards after catch with 1,828 yards, according to STATS Inc.

New Englands deep passing game remains pretty shallow, though. It is not a strength of the 37-year-old Bradys game.

Out of the 27 NFL quarterbacks that are responsible for at least 50 percent of their teams pass attempts, Brady ranks 25th in accuracy on passes targeted 20 yards or more downfield, according to Pro Football Focus. Only Carolinas Cam Newton and Oakland rookie Derek Carr rank lower than Brady (32 percent, including passes credited as drops).

Brady ranks 24th in the percentage of his pass attempts per dropback that are targeted 20 or more yards down the field at 10.1 percent, according to Pro Football Focus.

The only quarterbacks with a lower percentage of passes 20 or more yards down the field are New Orleanss Drew Brees, Jacksonville rookie Blake Bortles, and curiously, Baltimores Joe Flacco, who has the top accuracy percentage on such throws at 54.8 percent.

Flacco has thrown 10 touchdown passes on b***s that traveled more than 20 yards in the air. The leader is Luck with 12. Aaron Rodgers has 11 and zero interceptions. Brady has thrown four touchdown passes on passes that traveled more than 20 yards and has two interceptions.

It was hard not to watch Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones torching the Packers secondary Monday night for 259 yards and think that was the path of least resistance against the Packers.

Big plays matter because they equate to margin for error. If you have to consistently string together 10-, 11-, and 12-play drives to march down the field it requires a greater level of consistent execution than if you can pick up 40 yards on a deep throw every once in a while.

The ability to complete the long ball also forces a defense to commit resources to protect against it and can open running lanes near the line of scrimmage.

If the Patriots want to go to the deepest point of the playoffs and end their Super Bowl title drought, they should use the last three weeks of the season against their AFC East foils to add the threat of the deep ball to their repertoire.

Playing the short game has seen them come up short when it matters most.

CIA used false Heathrow terror plot confession to justify waterboarding

Sheila Casey Journalist bets he can stand waterboarding for 15 seconds Video

The CIA extracted false information about terrorist plots against Heathrow airport and Londons Canary Wharf business district from al-Qaida mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, and then used it to justify its use of waterboarding, the US Senate intelligence committee report on the CIAs use of torture concluded.

While a different prisoner said there had been a fledgling plan to attack each of the London targets, this had not been developed because those responsible had been apprehended, the report says.

Despite this, Mohammed began to deliver up elaborate details of the plots once his interrogators began to subject him to waterboarding, according to the committees examination of secret CIA files. The agency then decided to increase the number of times that Mohammed was subjected to the torture technique in order to induce him to confess to supposed plots within the US.

The CIA waterboarded Mohammmed at least 183 times after he was rendered to a CIA prison at Stare Kiejkuty in northern Poland.

In London, meanwhile, the British army had been despatched to Heathrow in response to the initial threat report, and headlines such as War Zone Heathrow and Heathrow Facing Twin Towers Hit were appearing on the front page of some newspapers. The Daily Telegraph reported that prime minister Tony Blair had been given details of a specific and chillingly credible threat of a terrorist attack which was probably imminent.

The CIA then began to highlight the intelligence about the London attacks to argue that waterboarding had not only proved invaluable, but must be allowed to continue.

This went on for several years, according to the report. The CIA provided similar inaccurate representations regarding the Heathrow and Canary Wharf Plotting in 20 of the 20 documents provided to policymakers and the Department of Justice between July 2003 and March 2009, it concludes.

The information extracted from Mohammed had played no role in alerting the CIA to the threat, the report says, and the CIA and other intelligence agencies were already alerted to al-Qaidas efforts to target Heathrow Airport.

Drawing upon the CIAs reports on the waterboarding of Mohammed, the report describes how CIA doctors oversaw the torture as the agency increased its use.

By 12 March 2003, Mohammeds statements about Heathrow and Canary Wharf were deemed by CIA interrogators to be an attempt by the prisoner to avoid discussion of plotting inside the United States, the report says. As a consequence, the CIA decided to waterboard him twice that day.

The report says that during the sessions, KSM ingested a significant amount of water. The agencys records noted that KSMs abdomen was somewhat distended and he expressed water when the abdomen was pressed.

It goes on: KSMs gastric contents were so diluted by water that the medical officer present was not concerned about regurgitated gastric acid damaging KSMs esophagus. The officer was, however, concerned about water intoxication and dilution of electrolytes and requested that the interrogators use saline in future waterboarding sessions.

The medical officer later wrote to [redacted] OMS [the CIAS Office of Medical Services] that KSM was ingesting and aspiration [sic] a LOT of water and that in the new technique we are basically doing a series of near drownings.

Once the waterboarding ceased, Mohammed felt able to admit that the details he had provided about the plots against London had been false.

By late June 2004, KSM had retracted much of the varied reporting he had provided on the Heathrow plotting, most importantly the information KSM provided on tasking potential operatives to obtain flight training. KSM stated that during March 2003 when he was being subjected to the CIAs enhanced interrogation techniques he may have given false information, and that, in many cases, the information he provided was just speculation.

Chiefs" Berry will begin treatment for Hodgkin"s lymphoma

    Hodgkin"s Lymphoma - CRASH! USMLE Step 2 and 3

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Pro Bowl safety Eric Berry has been diagnosed with Hodgkin"s lymphoma and will begin chemotherapy treatment immediately to attack the cancerous tumor in his chest.

The announcement was made on Monday by the Chiefs and the Emory University Hospital"s Winship Cancer Institute in Atlanta. That"s where Berry will receive treatment.

"This is a diagnosis that is very treatable and potentially curable with standard chemotherapy approaches," said Dr. Christopher R. Flowers, director of the Emory Lymphoma Program. "The goal of Mr. Berry"s treatment is to cure his lymphoma, and we are beginning that treatment now."

After the Chiefs-Raiders game on Nov. 20, Berry complained of discomfort in his chest, and two rounds of tests revealed the tumor.

Monday"s medical report did not indicate surgery was contemplated at this time. Instead, Berry will undergo chemotherapy with an outside chance he may also undergo radiation treatments; both are part of the normal treatment protocol for lymphoma.

Hodgkin"s lymphoma is a cancer of the lymphatic system, which is part of the immune system. Cells in the lymphatic system grow abnormally and may spread beyond the lymphatic system. As Hodgkin"s lymphoma progresses, it compromises the body"s ability to fight infection.

Advances in diagnosis and treatment of Hodgkin"s lymphoma have helped give people with this diagnosis the chance for a full recovery. Recent studies have indicated a five-year survival rate of 85 percent in those diagnosed with Hodgkin"s lymphoma.

Berry released a statement through the team, thanking everyone for the support he has received over the last two weeks.

"I can"t tell you enough how much I appreciate all the words of encouragement, the blessings and well wishes," Berry said. "I want to thank the Emory University School of Medicine, along with Dr. Flowers and his team, for all of their hard work and effort in diagnosing and creating a plan for me to battle this thing. I will embrace this process and attack it the same way I do everything else in life. G*d has more than prepared me for it. For everyone sharing similar struggles, I"m praying for you and keep fighting!"

At this time, there"s no prognosis for Berry"s return to athletic activity or the field.

NOTES: RB Jamaal Charles was being treated Monday for ankle and knee injuries that were aggravated during the loss to Arizona. Charles" left ankle was under a pileup of players during the first half. It was the same ankle he injured in Week 2 against Denver. The knee was injured against the Broncos in the Nov. 30 game between the teams. Coach Andy Reid said the knee was swollen and "a bit tender" on Monday. ... DE Allen Bailey and WR Junior Hemingway have not been cleared under the NFL concussion protocol to begin practicing, coach Andy Reid said. ... OLB Justin Houston continues to maintain his NFL lead in sacks. He picked up two more against Arizona and has 16. That"s the second-best sack year in franchise history, topped only by Derrick Thomas" 20 sacks in 1990. The NFL record is 22.5 sacks, by former New York Giants defensive end Michael Strahan in 2001.

    REPORT CARD VS. CARDINALS

--PASSING OFFENSE: C -- Alex Smith completed 67 percent of his throws for an average of 7.5 yards per attempt, but he spent most of the game on the run due to poor pass protection. Arizona dropped him five times and hit him on eight more passing plays. Smith took off running away from pressure four times. Tight end Travis Kelce had 110 yards on seven catches, but his big fourth-quarter fumble killed the Chiefs" last chance to win.

--RUSHING OFFENSE: C -- The Chiefs are still having trouble getting the ball in Jamaal Charles" hands enough, as he had just 10 carries against the Cardinals. The big one went for 63 yards and a touchdown, but the rest of the game he struggled, with nine carries for 28 yards. The play-calling did not rely on balancing up the offense as much as in the past, especially given the fact that the Chiefs led until late in the third quarter.

--PASS DEFENSE: C -- Coverage adjustments helped the Chiefs keep Arizona quarterback Drew Stanton on edge and he completed just half of his 30 throws. But when it came time to make the play that counted, Stanton connected on a 26-yard touchdown throw that gave the Cardinals the winning points.

--RUSH DEFENSE: D -- The Cardinals were without leading rusher Andre Ellington, but just-off-the-practice-squad running back Kerwynn Williams banged the Chiefs" defense for 100 yards on 19 carries. He broke away only once (for 16 yards), but hit the Chiefs with a series of 4-, 5- and 6-yard runs. When Arizona wanted to go physical with some between-the-tackles running, Williams got the job done.

--SPECIAL TEAMS: C -- Neither team found much to goose their games from their kicking units. The Chiefs returned five kicks for an average of 30 yards but none of them were close to breaking out. De"Anthony Thomas averaged just 1.3 yards on three punt returns. Coverage units were solid, giving up only a 43-yard kick return to Ted Ginn on the first play of the game. Cairo Santos and Dustin Colquitt were solid if unspectacular with their feet.

--COACHING: D -- The Chiefs have lost three straight games, and losing to Arizona was not a good way to start the all-important month of December. The Chiefs racked up 390 yards, their best yardage total in nine games, but they scored just two touchdowns. The defense wasn"t perfect, but a solid performance was wasted by an offense that couldn"t find the end zone. Time is running out for Andy Reid and his staff to right the ship.

Connor Franta Comes Out, Won"t Let Sexuality Define Or Confine Me

How To Approach The Guy You Like

Connor Frantas latest video is a significant one. The vlogger, whose cheerful personality and winning smile have helped him amass 3.6 million subscribers and more than 156 million views, has announced he is gay.

In his Coming Out video, the 22-year-old vlogger discussed his rural upbringing, the anxiety caused by his homosexual identity, the process of coming out to his friends and family, and, finally, his current feelings. This is just one little part of who I am, he said, and Im not going to let my sexuality define or confine me. Its part of me, its not all of me.

Frantas sexuality ispossiblyrelated to his decision to leave YouTube supergroup Our2ndLife, which he departed in July. At the time, he alluded to personal things Im dealing with behind the camera while also admitting hes been a very unhappy person for the past six months now.

When Franta left Our2ndLife, he received an outpouring of support from his fans and the YouTube community at large. Since the release of his Coming Out video, he has received a similar level of support, with many fellow YouTubersincluding Shane Dawson, Troye Sivan, and Our2ndLife member Ricky Dillonsending out encouraging tweets. Franta also got a shout-out from actress Shailene Woodley, who called him my favorite YouTuber.

Ultimately, as Franta said, his sexuality shouldnt define him. At the same time, it is good to know that he is now more comfortable with who he is and a part of a community that has always prided itself on its support of the LGBT community.
