Army-Navy Game Reignites Old Rivalry, And It"s Not As Friendly As You Think

December 8, 2012 - Navy vs. Army

Rivalries in sports tend to define what sport is. Two teams, or organizations, or cities that despise each other so much that when an opportunity arises where the two parties can compete head to head, it usually brings out the worst and best in both combatants. The annual Army-Navy football game is one of those rivalries. Dating back to the dawn of the 20th century, the game has featured some of the greatest, and most heated clashes between two sports teams in history.

This isnt Yankees vs. Red Sox, or Redskins vs. Cowboys, or Lakers vs. Celtics, or even Ohio State vs. Michigan and Auburn vs. Alabama. Army vs. Navy is deeply seeded as a competition between two factions of people who, when not on the football field, are trained to kill and die for the defense of our country. After the game, in West Point or Annapolis, these two factions will go back to being brothers (and sisters) in arms, but for one afternoon in early December, all camaraderie is pushed aside and a different kind of battle is fought. Not with guns, but with carefully drawn plays. Generals and admirals dont call the shots, a guy on the sidelines with a headset and a laminated card in his hands makes the decisions. Its a different war altogether, but to anyone who has served in one of those two factions, it is a war.

This years war takes place at M&T Bank Stadium, home of the Baltimore Ravens. The game, played in the backyard of the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, is as close to a Navy home game as there is. Most of the games in the series which is going into its 115th contest have been played in Philadelphia, the symbolic midway point between West Point, New York home of the Army Academy, and Annapolis. It wasnt until recently that the games have been played at other venues.

In 2011, the Army-Navy game was played at Fed-Ex Field in Landover, Maryland, home of the Washington Redskins. It was also been played in New York City. Next year, it will return to Philadelphia before traveling again. But no matter where the game is played, veterans from each branch will show up, or cheer from home. Veterans from two of the oldest branches of armed forces in the United States. The only two branches actually named in the U.S. Constitution.

Armys head coach, Jeff Monken, puts the game into perspective in a recent article in the Baltimore Sun.

This is the biggest rivalry in sports, bar none. Ive been a part of some great rivalries, but nothing takes the place of this one. Just the history and tradition of these two academies, the teams, just what it means to the guys on these teams. Its a feeling thats very unique. You cant describe it unless youve been a part of it.

The rivalry gets heated as the game gets closer each year. In 2012, as reported in the Inquisitr, Army supporters kidnapped the Navys mascot, Bill the Goat, before the game. A long standing order has been in place that protects the mascots from any type of shenanigans, yet somehow, Bill was taken and then returned. It was good old-fashioned fun to some, but for others, for those that have played in the game, it was an affront like no other.

When the contest first began in 1901, the teams were powerhouses. In 1944, Army was the number one team in the country, and its battle with Navy that year was legendary. There was much more on the line then, as World War II was still going on and the players knew that they could be shipping out any day to join the fight. These days, its very rare that the two teams are ranked in the national polls, and even rarer are bowl appearances on the line. The Army-Navy football game is more about pride. But its that pride that makes the Army-Navy game so compelling. The fanfare; the fight songs; the men and women in uniform in the stands; its a different kind of pageantry, and one that symbolizes the brotherhood that soldiers develop.

When the last whistle is blown, and the last notes of the victors alma mater fades away into the cold, Baltimore night, soldiers and sailors will once again join together in the common cause of defending our nation and our freedoms. But for one day, it will be a battle like no other. Its Army vs. Navy. And its one of the greatest rivalries in sports.

Are you a fan of the Army-Navy game? Are you a veteran of either branch? Sound off below on what the game means to you.

Navy Extends Streak to 13 with 17-10 Win in Army-Navy Game

Army Navy Tease 2013

BALTIMORE -- Navy beat Army on Saturday for the 13th straight time in the 115th Army-Navy game even though Army"s football program showed progress in closing the gap with its academy rival.

Navy extended its streak of unprecedented domination in the rivalry as Navy quarterback Keenan Reynolds led the Midshipmen over the Black Knights with 110 yards on 26 carries and one touchdown.

Soldiers and sailors gathered in Baltimore at M&T Bank Stadium for an Army-Navy game that included the usual traditions and ceremonies associated with the best rivalry in college football. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel attended the game along with Navy Secretary Ray Mabus and Army Secretary John McHugh.

Ken Niumatalolo said his team tries not to think about the streak but players have acknowledged that there has been extra pressure not to be the class that ends it. On Saturday, Reynolds and the players said they tried not to think about it.

"It"s hard to do. We don"t talk about the streak. Our approach has always been about the game. It"s not as if you carry points over from one year to the next," Niumatalolo said. "It"s a heck of a run, and you have to give credit to a lot of players and coaches."

Army leadership including Army Chief of Staff Gen. Ray Odierno have made it a priority to help the West Point football program catch up to Navy. Led be new coach Jeff Monken, a former Navy assistant coach, the Black Knights showed that the team had no intention of being blown out right from the start.

Army defensive back Josh Jenkins blocked a punt in the first quarter and sophomore Xavier Moss scooped it up and scored the first touchdown of the game. The Army Corps of Cadets exploded and Army"s defense fed off the energy.

Army bottled up Navy"s triple option attack until the end of the first half after Navy"s defense stopped Army on a fourth down. Reynolds showed off his arm with a 39-yard pass that moved Navy into Army territory. He finished off the drive with a 9-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Jamir Tillman.

"They did what we expected them to," Reynolds said. "We kept shooting ourselves in the foot. We just did a poor job of execution on offense. We knew what we had to do. We had to get points at the end of the first half."

Navy"s touchdown before halftime proved to be the turning point of the game as Navy regained momentum and scored on their next two offensive drives.

A one-yard touchdown run by Reynolds in the fourth quarter proved to be the winning score after Army clawed back with a late fumble recovery and a 52-yard field goal by kicker Daniel Grochowski. The kick was tied for the second longest field goal in Army history.

However, Army couldn"t recover the on-sides kick and Navy ran out the clock after a 19-yard run by Reynolds gave the Midshipmen a first down.

Army"s offense failed to capitalize on opportunities to score in the second quarter and second half. In fact, Navy"s defense prevented the Black Knights from ever scoring an offensive touchdown.

Army"s starting quarterback Angel Santiago was injured in the first half and was replaced in the second half by junior A.J. Schurr. Neither could provide Army enough of a spark to get their offense to execute consistently.

Meanwhile, Navy"s offense executed with cool efficiency in the second-half to fend off the Army comeback attempt.

The victory made Niumatalolo the winningest coach in Navy history with 56 wins, passing legendary coach George Welsh. After the final whistle, Niumatalolo"s players carried him off the field with linebacker Jordan Drake running into the Secretary of the Navy in the process

"I didn"t want to hurt them. It"s not like I am the lightest coach," Niumatalolo said. "My players did that. I didn"t want to do that. I just wanted to get down. I have so much respect for Army and Jeff and those guys. I didn"t want to upstage anybody."

Senior Army fullback Larry Dixon talked about the progress the Army program made despite the loss. He said Monken has instilled a family atmosphere within the team and he"s seen the program improve.

"My freshman, sophomore, and junior years it was easier to leave the locker room because we weren"t that close as a team," he said. "That was the hardest thing I"ve ever had to do was part ways with my teammates right there. At the very least what coach Monken has done, and I"m grateful for that, is that he created a family."

Army senior defensive lineman Joe Drummond considered the disappointment associated with never beating Navy in his four years.

"I think, of course, it will be our one, huge regret from our time here, not having beaten our archrivals," Drummond said. "When it comes to this program going forward though, we know we"re leaving it in very, very capable hands."

Navy"s coach gave credit to Army"s players and emphasized after the game how players from both sides will soon play on the same team in defense of their country.

"Oour country is in great hands, on both sides of the ball. They"ve got great kids at West Point," Niumatalolo said. It"s kind of cool when you"ve got the final four (College Football Playoffs), players trying to unionize, trying to get more pay. But here you"ve got two schools that just want to beat each other up and then shake hands after the game. And a year or so later they will be serving together to protect our freedoms."

Phillies Fans React To Reported Trade Of Jimmy Rollins To Dodgers

Jimmy rollins disses mets

By Tim Jimenez

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) The longest tenured pro athlete in Philadelphia looks like hes heading west. Multiple reports have the Phillies trading away Jimmy Rollins to the Los Angeles Dodgers a movefans are calling an end of an era.

After 15 years in red pinstripes, it appears its now Dodger blue for Rollins. With another year remaining on a contract that included a no trade clause, its a move that took many fans by surprise.

Yeah, Im actually shocked, said Gavin from Riverton, New Jersey.

I would rather seen him retire here, said Angelo from Media, Pennsylvania, but he just didnt make it.

Angelo is a lifelong Phillies fan. He said Rollins, the Phillies all-time hits leader, is leaving an organization that he changed for the better.

Jimmy comes in and hes got style, hes rash, Angelo said. Hes willing to predict that year that they were going to beat the Mets, and they did.

That Team to Beat prediction in 2007 was followed by a World Series title in 2008 a memory that tops the list for many fans.

When they finally had the parade and he was standing up on the float, said Ladd from West Philadelphia, that was a good feeling, a really good feeling.

Fans agree Rollins was a leader during the greatest run in team history. And so, when Rollins returns to Citizens Bank Park next season, fans say h**l get well deserved, brotherly love welcome home.

The same that every other player gets, said Steve. Theyll cheer for him until he gets a hit, and when he gets a hit theyll boo him off the field.

In a season that doesnt promise much, fans can look forward toAugust 4 when the Dodgers, and perhaps their new shortstop, visit Philadelphia.

Mexican actress Aracely Armbula will sing "Gracias Morena" for the first time tonight, December 11 at 11:35PM/10:35C on the Telemundo special "Virgen de Guadalupe," accompanied by superstar Lucero; the daughter of Pepe Aguilar, ngela Aguilar; and singer Gerardo Ortiz.

Aracely Armbula will present a song she wrote especially for this act of devotion telling how, as a child, she used to visit the sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin with her parents. For the first time ever, ngela Aguilar will sing a solo as a tribute to Our Lady, whose feast day she has celebrated with her father, Pepe Aguilar, since the age of 7, when the two sang together at the December 12 festivities in Los Angeles, California.

Gerardo Ortiz will also sing at the event for the first time, joining a mariachi band in a performance of his hit "Perdname."

As is tradition, the celebrities will join together to sing "Las Maanitas" in homage to the Virgin of Guadalupe. Cardinals are the unluckiest team in the NFL

First Take - Seattle Seahawks vs Arizona Cardinals ?

Getty

The Arizona Cardinals just cant catch a break, and neither can we. Thursday night saw yet another unwatchable football game, which Arizona won without scoring a touchdown.

The 12-6 scoreline. A quarterback who wasnt on the team a month ago. Arizonas first 11-win season since 1975.

Its a net gain, I guess. So why does it feel like a loss?

Last month, the Cardinals lost starting quarterback Carson Palmer for the rest of the season. Its a brutal blow for any team, but Arizona had a capable backup in Drew Stanton. Had. As Stanton was carted off the field in the third quarter with the ominously ambiguous knee injury, Ryan Lindley took the field instead of rookie third-stringer Logan Thomas. People thought he was the punter.

(Getty)

After the game, coach Bruce Arians said that Thomas wasnt prepared, and Lindley (owner of the worst Total QBR 9.1 over the past three seasons per ESPN) was.

It was not a time to put Logan out there, Arians said. Hes going to be a good player someday, but hes not ready for this yet. And Ryan was more than ready.

The drama and consternation were all for naught. The Cardinals triumphed, and at 11-3, Arizona is on top of their division, has the best record in the NFC, and will clinch a playoff berth if Philadelphia and Dallas dont tie their game.

It doesnt sound like the makings of the unluckiest team in football, but it is. With Palmer, and even with Stanton, Arizona had a shot at winning a Super Bowl this season. With Lindley, that isnt the case. Arizona isnt dealing with a third string player who is learning the ropes. Lindley has played seven games in his career, and until Thursday hadnt thrown a pass in the NFL since 2012.

Bruce Arians is a tremendous coach. Arizona is a great football team. But historically, you need to score touchdowns to win a football game and Lindley hasnt done that. Ever.

Amy Pascal Breaks Silence On Rallying Sony After Devastating Hack Attack: Q&A

EFGLA Care and Cure 2010: Amy Pascal and Conclusion

EXCLUSIVE: Its fair to imagine that Sony Pictures Entertainment chairman Amy Pascal hasnt had a peaceful moment since November 24, when a hackers skeleton emblem appeared on Sony Corp. computers around the world and signaled the arrival of a hack attack that has created unprecedented havoc for a media empire. The breach shut down every computer and e-mail; digital copies of unreleased films were posted; confidential data, ranging from employee information to e-mails from executives, was dispersed to media outlets and served up to embarrass and hobble the Sony regime. Pascals e-mail exchanges have been a focal point in the latter portion of this nightmare. Suddenly, one of Hollywoods most accomplished female executives, a risk taker with a reputation for taste and strong talent relationships, felt like the girl who fell down the rabbit hole.

I have tried since to get Pascal to give Deadline readers a glimpse of what it has been like to weather this storm. She relented today, hours before the premiere of the controversial Sony comedy The Interview. The timing of the release of that film, about the attempt by bumbling journalists to kill North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, has created speculation that it might be a factor in this sophisticated hack attack.

DEADLINE: Ive urged you to speak about this crisis for a week. So today you are. Why?PASCAL: I didnt want to talk before. I didnt want to make this about me. Everyone at this company has been violated and nobody here deserved this. Then the most hurt email came outIm so disappointed in myself, that I ever would have had such a lapse in my thinking. Of all the things I thought might be said about me, this was the last one, and I feel awful. There are people here that I work with I love, and I dont want them to be disappointed in me. I am mostly disappointed in myself. That is the element of this that has been most painful for me. I dont want to be defined by these emails, after a 30 year career; I was even willing to let it all happen. But Im just not going to do that now. Clearly, there are things that you say in a rash moment without thinking them through, and it takes ten seconds to say something stupid. When its blasted and it might become the way you are defined as a human being, I have to say it. Its just wrong. Its wrong about me. And its wrong to do to anyone.

DEADLINE: Did you apologize to the president?PASCAL: I dont know Barack Obama. I worked really hard for him in both of his campaigns. I am inspired by him. IIm embarrassed, deeply.

DEADLINE: Rev. Al Sharpton just came out with a statement highly critical of your comment. How do you react to that?PASCAL: I know I screwed up. So I called him and we spoke. And we are going to try to use this as an opportunity to make things better.

DEADLINE: Can you describe what its like to find yourself under siege, having to apologize for private e-mail thoughts dug up by these hackers?PASCAL: Im not a victim here. Im going to be fine. Its really hard on our employees. Their Social Security numbers are on display, there are potentialidentity theft issues. None of them deserved this. No one deserves this.

DEADLINE: Youve run a studio for a long time, and you feel you understand the media and suddenly you find your old e-mails served up salaciously. Whats going through your mind in relation to whats happening to you, and your studio?PASCAL: That what this is, really is, is a crime. Its stolen property. Theyre stealing private property. Its hard to believe what has gone on. I dont want to say anything bad about journalists to you Mike, but its hard to swallow that otherwise reputable outlets are trafficking in this. Im shocked. Its like having someone go through your trash and talk about what they found.

DEADLINE: Nobody has died of embarrassment, but this seems very invasive.PASCAL: Mainly, its distracting. I have a company to run, I have movies to get out. I have Annie to get out and The Interview. I have next years schedule of films. I have 6,000 people who work here.

DEADLINE: How do you not allow yourself to be a victim, and is there something you hope people reading these e-mails will factor into their thought process?PASCAL: What youd like to say is, dont read them. Can we all make a pact not to read these, whether theyre mine or somebody elses? Because Im not the last person this is going to happen to. It would be wonderful for everybody to be willing to be forgiving of each other, and to not engage in this.

DEADLINE: Thats a lofty ambition; I want a pony but that isnt happening, either. So address that question again, knowing that media outlets are serving this stuff as fast as it comes in, and people are gorging on it.PASCAL: Look, I understand these things are juicy, salacious and tempting to the people who are reading them. I would ask that they reserve some kind of judgment about those stolen e-mails defining someone. This one e-mail was really hard for me. Otherwise, I realize Im just going to have to move forward. I cannot worry every day, about the next thing thats going to be read by the town about me, something I said in a moment of weakness, stupidity or tactlessness.

Ill apologize to everybody, every day, but I have to run this company. That means taking care of the employees here and so I have to be strong because I have a big company here. The truth is, all anyone is talking about are these e-mails. It is important not to forget that a crime was committed and that this is the new way of the world. This could have happened to anyone. It happened to Target and it happened to Home Depot. This is whats happening, and we have to figure out how to defend ourselves and how to take care of ourselves in this new world.

DEADLINE: Any closer to ascertaining who did this and why?PASCAL: Thats not something I can talk about and that cant be my focus here. For me, this is about moving forward.

DEADLINE: If people are concerned about working at Sony because of the leaked Social Security numbers and these e-mail breaches, whatwould you say to them?PASCAL: That were going to have the best security in the business by the time this is over. I would also hope everyone remembers this might be about people not wanting us to release a movie. Thats another issue we should be talking about, something we need to band together about, and not divide with all this gossip.

DEADLINE: Youve made bold unauthorized films before, including The Social Network and Zero Dark Thirty, and you took the leap on The InterviewPASCAL: And that can never, ever change. No one will tell us what movies to release, ever. Nobody should be able to intimidate a company to not to do its business.

DEADLINE: Did Sony ever weigh not releasing The Interview?PASCAL: No, because Michael and I are completely confident in it, and determined to release the movie.

DEADLINE: Still, there was discussionPASCAL: We wanted to make sure that everything in the movie was respectful, but the truth is, its a comedy. A comedy. Its meant to be entertainment, and thats what it is. I think when people see the movie theyre going to know that. Look, I dont want to play defense here. I am eager to get back on offense, believe me. And I will. I just hope people understand that you prove yourself and your character and values over a long period of time, and that you should not be defined by an occasional stumble or a bad moment. Thats not fair.
