Lafayette Shooting Suspect Had Mental Illness History, Officials Say - The New ...

LAFAYETTE, La. The picture that emerged Friday of the gunman who killed two women and wounded nine other people in a theater here was one filled with instability and rage, from a history of mental illness, to vandalizing and booby-trapping a house, to venting his fury at womens rights, minorities and liberals.

The gunman, John Russell Houser, 59, of Phenix City, Ala., who had a history of mental illness, took his own life in the theater here Thursday night, after gunning down the others during a screening of the comedy Trainwreck, the police said.

If you gave me 40 names and 40 pictures of people who might have done that, I wouldnt have hesitated to point him out, said Calvin Floyd, the former host of a television talk show in Columbus, Ga., that frequently featured Mr. Houser as a guest in the 1990s.

I could just sense the anger was there, Mr. Floyd said in an interview. Maybe I should have been afraid of him. He had a very hostile personality at times.

Mr. Houser believed that women should not work outside their homes, and had a lot of hostility toward abortion clinics, Mr. Floyd said. He was the sort of person who believed that all the trouble started when they took Bibles out of school and stopped prayer.

On Twitter, on antigovernment discussion boards, and on other forums online, a person using the names Rusty Houser and John Russell Houser praised the Westboro Baptist Church, which has drawn ire for demonstrating against gays at military funerals; Timothy J. McVeigh, who bombed a government building in Oklahoma City in 1995, killing 168, and even Adolf Hitler. The Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks racist and antigovernment groups, said the posts were all from Mr. Houser.

America is so sick that I now believe it to be the enemy of the world, he wrote on one discussion forum. I know next to nothing about Iran, but the little I do know tells me they are far higher morally than this financially failing filth farm.

Mr. Houser was treated in the Phenix City area for an unspecified mental illness in 2008 and 2009, according to Heath D. Taylor, the sheriff of Russell County, Ala. Court records show that he filed for bankruptcy protection in 2002, and the superintendent of the Louisiana State Police, Col. Michael D. Edmonson, said his finances had been poor; he recently received money from his mother.

Mr. Houser lived most of his life in Columbus, Ga., just across the Chattahoochee River from Phenix City, and his LinkedIn profile described him as an investment manager with a law degree, an accounting credential and experience running restaurants. He ran for local office in Columbus, Mr. Floyd said, but he was spotted removing his opponents signs, an affair that drove him from the race.

He and his family moved into a house in Phenix City, in 2005, and that year, his wife made a domestic violence complaint against him, but it did not lead to an arrest, Sheriff Taylor said. The next year, Mr. Houser applied for a permit to carry a concealed pistol, but the application was denied by the sheriffs office; Alabama, however, does not require a permit or license to buy or own a handgun.

The reason for the denial was we had the report of the domestic violence against him, and in 89 or "90, he was arrested for an arson case in Columbus, Ga., which did not result in conviction, Sheriff Taylor said.

Jim Craft, the chief of the police department in Lafayette, La., on Friday identified and described the gunman who killed two people, and then himself, in a movie theater on Thursday night.

In 2008, Mr. Housers family members sought a temporary protective order in court in Carroll County, Ga., and asked that he be committed involuntarily to a mental hospital, and his wife grew fearful enough that she removed weapons from their home, court records show. He was subsequently admitted to a hospital in Columbus.

In court papers, they said he had perpetrated various acts of family violence, and cited a substantial likelihood of future family violence. They described him as having bipolar disorder, for which he had been prescribed medication, which he sometimes failed to take.

His condition apparently deteriorated in April 2008, with his daughters wedding approaching, when, the family told the court, he expressed vehement opposition to the planned nuptials, exhibited extreme erratic behavior, and made ominous as well as disturbing statements that the wedding would not happen.

That month, the police in Carrollton, Ga., investigated a report of a mentally disturbed person after he arrived unannounced at his daughters office, and later threatened another family member. It was the following day that family members sought to have him committed.

In March 2015, Mr. Housers wife, Kellie Houser, filed for divorce in Georgia after 31 years of marriage, and listed his location as unknown.

Mr. Houser lost his house to foreclosure, and an eviction order was served on him in March 2014, the sheriff said. A criminal complaint was later filed accusing Mr. Houser of vandalizing the house, including pouring cement into the plumbing, and tampering with gas lines in a way that could have started fires.

The buyer of the house, Norman Bone, and his daughter, Beth, and her boyfriend, Dan Ramsel, described what Mr. Houser had done as booby-trapping the house, and said his rampage required more than a year of repairs. They said he destroyed many of its fixtures, dumped hundreds of fish into the swimming pool, and left human feces and cement throughout the house, where he once flew the Confederate battle flag.

Mr. Ramsel said that Mr. Houser, known as Rusty, had cultivated a reputation as somewhat of an anarchist.

The family members apparently had not been in contact with him recently, Chief Craft said, Mr. Housers only known connection to Lafayette was a long-dead uncle who once lived here.

Law enforcement officials here said they were looking into where and when Mr. Houser acquired the gun he used in the assault, and why he was in Lafayette, a 500-mile drive from Phenix City. A purchase at a store requires a federal background check, and serious mental illness can be grounds for denial, but the check system is imperfect, and does not cover person-to-person sales.

Because of the brand of weapon it is, its more difficult to trace that type of weapon than it is other types, said Chief Jim Craft of the Lafayette Police Department, but he would not elaborate.

The police said Mr. Houser had been in Lafayette since early July and had been staying in a motel. They appealed to the public for help in learning more about him.

The gunman parked a blue 1995 Lincoln Continental, with illegally switched license plates, near an exit door to the Grand Theater, and in his motel room, we found wigs and glasses and disguises, basically, Chief Craft said at a Friday morning news conference just outside the crime scene.

It is apparent that he was intent on shooting and then escaping, Chief Craft said. What happened is that the quick law enforcement response forced him back into the theater, at which time he shot himself.

Colonel Edmonson, of the State Police, said, To put a motive to it is just something that we simply cant do right now. He said there was no known connection between the gunman and any of the victims.

Mr. Houser bought one of 25 tickets sold for a showing of the film and sat for several minutes in the theater, the authorities said. Shortly before 7:30 p.m., he began shooting, firing at least 13 rounds from a .40-caliber semiautomatic handgun.

He was by himself, he sat by himself, and the first two people he shot were right in front of him, Chief Craft said.

He identified the two dead women as Mayci Breaux, 21, and Jillian Johnson, 33. The wounded ranged in age from their teens to their 60s, and one was listed Friday in critical condition. Two were treated and released.

Witnesses said Mr. Houser stood at the back of the auditorium, which had steeply pitched, stadium-style seating, and fired down at others. Mr. Houser reloaded at least once as he tried to flee the theater, Chief Craft said, and returned when he saw the police.

Mexico Rights Group: Errors, Omissions in Case of 43 Missing - ABC News

Panama vs Mexico (1-2) | Turns to the FIGHT | Gold Cup 2015

Mexico"s National Human Rights Commission is questioning the government"s investigation into what happened to 43 missing college students who investigators say were killed and incinerated last September.

The commission on Thursday issued a list of 32 omissions in the investigation and recommendations that it said are vital to solving the case, even though the Attorney General"s Office gave its comprehensive official version of what happened in January.

Its report lists key people and evidence, including a cellphone message from one student after he would have been kidnapped, that were never pursued in the Sept. 26 attacks in the southern city of Iguala.

"All of the things listed are not in the case file, and so in our view have not been done. And they are things very important to the case," commission President Luis Raul Gonzalez Perez said.

The Attorney General"s Office said only that it had received the report and did not comment on its criticisms. The agency reiterated that it is committed to an exhaustive and transparent investigation.

The teachers college students from the state of Guerrero disappeared while commandeering transit buses for a protest in Mexico City. The Attorney General"s Office says the students were arrested by local police and handed over to a drug cartel, which killed and incinerated them at a garbage dump. Their remains were allegedly put in garbage bags and dumped in a nearby river.

But the commission"s report says the federal investigation had not developed profiles of each of the missing students that would include basic details such as blood type, fingerprints and distinguishing characteristics such as scars or tattoos, which it termed a "basic tool" of any search.

Many of the report"s observations concern the collection and analysis of evidence from the garbage dump in Cocula and the San Juan river where allegedly bags of their remains were dumped. That part of the government"s version has drawn the most criticism from families and other observers.

For example, the report lists a number of people known only by nickname who were allegedly involved at the dump, but who have not been arrested. It calls for the navy divers who recovered remains in the river to be interviewed. It recommends comparing the soil recovered in the bags of remains with soil from the dump to see if it matches. It says bullet casings recovered from the dump site should undergo ballistic testing to see if they match any recovered weapons. It suggests investigators have never established if the remains found at the river are human or animal.

The report recommends investigators identify and interview people who lived near where the attacks took place in Iguala a seemingly basic step in an investigation especially those who gave refuge to some students. It says authorities never did forensic tests on clothing found near the buses where the attacks occurred.

The report also says the students" families never received proper medical and psychological support and still live amid the same crime and insecurity that led to the disappearances, which the attorney general said involved a drug cartel working with local police.

Robin Williams" Daughter Zelda Taking a Break From Social Media Ahead of ...

Robin Williams - Parkinson interview [2002]

Robin Williams, left, and his daughter, Zelda at the premiere of "Happy Feet Two" on Nov. 13, 2011 in Los Angeles.

Robin Williams" daughter Zelda Williams is going on hiatus from social media as the first anniversary of her father"s death draws near.

The actress, 25, posted a picture of clouds illuminated by sunshine Monday, a day ahead of what would have been the beloved comedian"s 64th birthday.

"I will be taking a break from social media in the coming weeks," she captioned the pic. "It"s a time better served away from the opinions or sentiments of others, and I appreciate your understanding."

In her absence she asks those wishing to leave messages about her father to "please attempt to be respectful and kind to one another in the process, both because I will not be here to delete or mediate trolling, and because kindness is in short supply these days anyhow."

On Twitter Tuesday she thanked users for their kind thoughts before adding, "Taking a break for a bit. Don"t burn the place down while I"m gone!"

Williams also broke from social media briefly in the wake of her father"s suicide on August 11 after accusing Instagram users of "mining our accounts for photos of dad," and calling out Twitter users for reportedly sending her upsetting images.

Six months after his passing, Williams told NBC"s Kate Snow thatlife without her father is hard but she continues to try and move forward. "Its going to take a lot of work to allow myself to have the sort of fun, happy life that I had, but that"s important. Anybody who has ever lost anyone works very hard to continue that memory in a positive way."

Of his death she said she doesn"t dwell on what led the"Mork & Mindy" star to commit suicide. "I dont think theres a point. Its not important to ask."

In early Junea San Francisco superior court judge set a July 29 deadline for Williams widow Susan and his children from previous marriages Zachary, Zelda and Cody, to reach an agreement on how the late actors possessions will be divided and howmuch money Susan will receive to keep up the Tiburon, Calif. home the couple shared.

Should The Ashley Madison Hack Have Houstonians Worried? | Houston Press

Ashley Madison Was Hacked

Wednesday, July 22, 2015 | 2 hours ago

If you live in one of Houston"s nicer neighborhoods and you"ve noticed that one member of that seemingly happily-married couple next door has been acting a little nervous lately, there"s a survey that might offer an explanation why (though we really wouldn"t recommend confronting said neighbor or their spouse especially the spouse with the following survey information).

According to a 2015 national survey of adultery in America conducted by recently-hacked adulterers-only dating website AshleyMadison.com, Houston is the eighth most adulterous city in the country, with 187,000 Houstonians signed up for Ashley Madison accounts. And a more specific Ashley Madison survey says that those members are distributed somewhat evenly throughout Houston"s ritziest neighborhoods, with Sugar Land and West University rounding out the top two. That shouldn"t really come as a surprise.

Now, finishing eighth here isn"t too outrageous, considering Houston is the fourth largest city in the country. But despite the low-when-placed-in-proper-context numbers, there are almost definitely at least 187,000 faithful spouses who would still vehemently argue that Houston has about 187,000 too many adulterers.

Joe Girardi says "no platoon," but Chris Young playing against lefties ...

Chris Young - Tomorrow

NEW YORK -- It would be managerial malpractice not to start Chris Young against every lefty the rest of the way. Young"s OPS vs. lefties is 1.101, which is a number Barry Bonds would approach when he was going his best. Meanwhile, Carlos Beltran"s OPS against lefties is .710.

So it really should not surprise anyone that, just as it has been most of the season, Young will be in there when a lefty is on the mound.

"I would think against every lefty we face he will be in there," Girardi said.

"I would think against every lefty we face he will be in there," Joe Girardi said of Chris Young.Thomas B. Shea/USA TODAY Sports

Girardi, who always likes to misdirect when he can, painted it less as a decision about Beltran and more about the fact the Young will fill-in for all of the Yankees outfielders.

"I"m not saying it is going to be a platoon," Girardi said of right field.

The discussion of Young"s playing time has been muted for much of the year because of injuries to Beltran and Jacoby Ellsbury.

Giardi went out of his way to say that when Young plays that it won"t only be Beltran that will sit.

"We are going to see a number of lefties on this next long stretch," Girardi said. "I"ll be able to give Jake a day off. I"ll be able to give Gardy [Brett Gardner] a day off. I just chose to do it with Carlos today."

The thing is, though, if the Yankees make the playoffs and a lefty starts for the opponent, Young would likely replace Beltran on that night. So, going forward, it stands to reason -- if everyone stays healthy -- Young will probably be in right the most of any of the outfield positions.

Beltran said that, while Girardi hasn"t really explained the situation to him, he understands how well Young has hit.

"I just have to deal with it," Beltran said.

Brett "White Shoes" Gardner retires: MLB and the Yankees made it clear that he should not wear his white cleats he sported Sunday again.

"I won"t be wearing them again," Gardner said.

Gardner said the only reason he did was because of Sunday starter CC Sabathia. After the All-Star break, Sabathia saw the shoes in Gardner"s locker and liked them. On Sunday, 45 minutes before Sabathia"s start, Sabathia walked by Gardner"s locker and said, "If you don"t have those white shoes on you can keep your little [behind] inside."

Gardner wore them. He wasn"t fined by the league, but if he had been fined Sabathia told Gardner he would have paid it. Gardner said he thought he would be docked some money (the fine is around $1,000 or so) if he wore the white shoes again. He says he will not.
