Will Jackson injury mean Seahawks have to make a move at quarterback?

Madden 16 - Odell Beckham vs Seahawks

An ankle injury suffered by Tarvaris Jackson in the third quarter Friday night didnt sound as bad afterward as it looked on the field.

Coach Pete Carroll said he didnt know if Jackson had suffered a high ankle sprain but that the initial thought is that Jackson may be out only two weeks or so.

Heres specifically what Carroll said when asked initially about Jackson: Well, its going to be a little bit. It depends on how he comes back. But, of course were concerned. Well see how he does. T-Jack has been doing really well for us, and hes been exactly what weve been counting on, so its going to take him a while to get back and its going to push R.J. (Archer) to get a lot more work in the next couple weeks. Its probably a two-week deal or something like that, so well see what that means.

Heres what Carroll said later when asked if it was a high ankle sprain, which typically require a longer recovery: Im not sure about that yet. He got whacked pretty good. But I dont know if its a designated high ankle.

Still, while Carroll said two weeks, his comments also seemed to allow that Jackson could be sidelined longer.

If so, then the Seahawks may have a decision on their hands about what to do at backup quarterback.

The Seahawks have only Archer as a listed quarterback behind Russell Wilson and Jackson. They also, of course, have B.J. Daniels, who served as essentially the No. 3 quarterback last year but this season is being tried as a receiver and returner, and has seemed to do enough that he remains having a legitimate shot to make the roster.

If Jackson is out just a few weeks, then the Seahawks dont really have an issue for the season. Recall that Jackson is making $1.5 million this season, all guaranteed (and all already counted against the salary cap) so hes basically entrenched as the backup if healthy. Seattle has made it pretty clear it didnt feel that spot was a real issue by having just three QBs on the roster during camp.

But the requirements of training camp specifically, having enough arms to throw passes during drills might compel the Seahawks to bring in another quarterback if Jackson is out for a while (a proverbial camp arm.) Is that a duty the team would ask of Daniels after having asked him to move to receiver? Its possible Daniels spent time at quarterback in the spring before Jackson re-signed in June. But then again, they might be reluctant given how Daniels has performed at receiver they might view it unfair to move him away from that role now.

And remember that signing someone from the outside would mean releasing someone to make room on the 90-man roster.

Speaking to the media less than a half hour or so after the game, Carroll said it was too early say whether the team would have to add a quarterback.

I dont know, well see, Carroll said. I dont know about that yet. Well have to see how it looks tomorrow. The ankle did not swell up much, so well see what that means.

Some on social media immediately began speculation who the Seahawks might look to if they needed to bring in a quarterback. The Seahawks had former UW QB Keith Price on the roster for a month in the spring of 2014. But he has not been with an NFL team since and currently is playing for Saskatchewan in the CFL.

Matt Flynn is available. But, well, the first go-round with Flynn didnt go so well.

How Jackson recovers over the next 24-48 hours figures to tip Seattles hand.

NFL preseason schedule 2015: Jameis Winston"s debut set for Saturday

Ameer Abdullah 2015 NFL Preseason Week 1 highlights

Jameis Winston will make his debut for the Buccaneers on Saturday. Here"s all you need to know to catch the three games.

The first week of the 2015 NFL preseason is nearly in the books, with six games on Thursday and six games on Friday. But there"s still plenty of action before it"s said and done, including three games on Saturday and a game between the Indianapolis Colts and Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday.

On Saturday, the San Francisco 49ers will face the Houston Texans, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will play the Minnesota Vikings and the Kansas City Chiefs will take on the Arizona Cardinals. There"s plenty to pay attention to from each game, from the debut of Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston to determining what the heck the 49ers will actually look like after such a ridiculously poor offseason.

Winston will be the most interesting thing at this stage. He was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, and the Buccaneers are putting all of their eggs in his basket right off the bat. This is Winston"s team, and seeing how he looks for however long he plays will be plenty interesting.

Below, we"ve got the full schedule and something to watch for during each game (all times ET,stations via 506sports):

San Francisco 49ers at Houston Texans

(Away: KPIX-CBS 5, Home: KTRK-ABC 13) -- 8 p.m.

As noted above, the 49ers had an absolutely wretched offseason. There"s a new coaching staff; they lost Patrick Willis, Anthony Davis, Justin Smith and Chris Borland to retirement (only one of them -- Smith -- was expected to retire anytime soon). They saw Frank Gore, Michael Crabtree, Perrish c*x and Chris Culliver leave in free agency.Aldon Smith got arrested again, prompting his release from the team.

Obviously, they have a ton of stuff to prove at this stage in the offseason. New coach Jim Tomsula needs to fill holes all over the roster, including the middle and right side of the offensive line. If Colin Kaepernick is to progress and take advantage of new weapon Torrey Smith this season, they really need to get that offensive line figured out.

But hey, that"s not all that"s worth watching in this one. The Texans also have a pretty important battle on their hands at the quarterback position. Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett are battling for the starting job and neither seems to have an edge at this stage. It sounds like they"ll need more than just this one game to figure out that battle.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Minnesota Vikings

(Away: WFLA-NBC 8, Home: KMSP-FOX 9) -- NFL Network, 8 p.m.

We"ll see how the Vikings look a day after head coach Mike Zimmer called an early end to practice due to everything seemingly going wrong. The Vikings are a young team with a lot to prove, and Zimmer will be expecting the best out of them. They did play in the Hall of Fame Game, and looked solid in a win over the Steelers, but apparently Zimmer needs to see more from the team in practice.

Whatever the case, the Vikings will be hoping to spoil the first game action of the aforementioned Winston. The Buccaneers made Winston the top pick and didn"t even set him up with a quarterback battle in training camp. Winston was immediately named the starter, and he"ll have a chance to show his stuff against the Vikings on Saturday.

On the other side of the ball, the Buccaneers need to find some kind of pass rush (and, similarly, the Vikings need to show they can handle one to keep Teddy Bridgewater clean). Don"t expect the Buccaneers to reveal any of their elaborate blitz schemes in the preseason, but they should send extra men early and often in this game.

Kansas City Chiefs at Arizona Cardinals

(Away: KCTV-CBS 5, Home: KNXV-ABC 15) -- 9 p.m.

The Cardinals have been one of the more surprising teams in the league over the past couple seasons. They"ve been dominant in one of the toughest divisions in the league, and that"s even with huge issues at the quarterback position. Carson Palmer is solid, but he"s somewhat injury-prone and the Cardinals need to concentrate on keeping him upright.

On Saturday, Palmer is expected to play at least a series, and the offensive line will need to pull out all the stops to make sure Palmer stays on his feet in the limited time he"s in action.

For the Chiefs, the biggest thing to pay attention to is that Eric Berry will be in action on Friday. Berry missed the end of the 2014 season due to cancer, but he recently returned to the team. Head coach Andy Reid has already announced that Berry will be playing. It"s a great story about a great player, so it"s definitely worth checking out. Other than that, the Chiefs are primarily looking to get out of this one without injury, as they don"t have a bunch of major position battles to figure out at this stage.

Mailbag: Impressions Of Dustin Vaughan And La"el Collins?

2015 NFC Wild Card 04.01 Dallas Cowboys vs Detroit Lions

Toby SchmidtBillings, MTDo you think with some continued success that we could finally see Vaughan move into the No. 2 spot?

Bryan: Good start for Vaughan if you do see the continued success then the question does become how comfortable are you with him as your backup. In my mind I have said that I wouldnt make any decisions on the future of Dustin Vaughan until I saw him play in all the preseason games, then at that time I would make that call. My hope is that he does play well enough to be the No. 2 here.

David: After watching him play well in live action, Im at least intrigued to see what Vaughan can offer through the rest of this camp. His play against the Chargers was definitively better than anything weve seen out of him at practice. Its going to take more than that for him to unseat Brandon Weeden, but its a solid start for him to build on heading into the second game.

Nick KoonceOmaha, NEIn our preseason opener versus San Diego it appeared as though La"el Collins played very well throughout the game. There were a few plays where his technique was sloppy and he ended up on the ground. However, I felt that he held up very well in pass protection and did a great job at getting to the second level in the run game. I know that Ron Leary has played well, but with Collins" athleticism and upside, how soon can we expect to see him taking snaps with the ones?

Bryan: You are a little late to the party sir Collins has been taking snaps with the first offense as of last week and like his game last night there has been some good with the bad. He has going to have to be more consistent if he is going to take this job away from Leary.

David: I really like the words athleticism and upside to describe Collins game. You can tell that hes got the potential to become much more than what he is right now. I still think I might give the nod to Leary, because hes a more experienced and polished player, but itll be interesting to see how much the rookie can push him as camp continues. Theres no denying he looked impressive.

Saints RB Tim Hightower had that "look in his eye" again

New Orleans Saints 2013 MIX [HD]

Mike Triplett, ESPN Staff Writer

Close
  • Covered Saints for eight years at New Orleans Times-Picayune
  • Previously covered LSU football, San Francisco 49ers
  • Iowa native and University of Iowa graduate

It took three years, but Tim Hightower was back on a NFL field Thursday night. And New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton liked what he saw from the veteran running back, who is attempting a comeback at age 29.

"I liked the look in his eye pregame, and I liked it during the game. I thought it was really good," Payton said of Hightower, who ran the ball 12 times for 31 yards and caught one pass for 10 yards.

There were a handful of negative runs mixed in. But Hightower did break loose for runs of 11, 10 and 7 yards -- plus a 13-yarder that was called back via holding.

More than anything, he was just happy to be back to work -- as he hinted when he responded to Paytons quote via Twitter:

When you"ve got something on your mind bigger than yourself.... Thanks coach https://t.co/Kr2CnyFHvb

Tim Hightower (@Tim_Hightower) August 14, 2015

"It felt awesome," said Hightower, whose promising career that began with the Arizona Cardinals and Washington Redskins was waylaid by a torn ACL in 2011 and a lingering infection that wasnt identified by doctors for years.

"A lot of work has gone into getting back and just having the opportunity to do this again, to play the game I love, and to be able to do it in a game situation. Its a true blessing. It meant a lot to be out there," Hightower said. "I just wanted to come in here and put a good first foot forward. Im sure therell be a lot of critiquing, a lot of things I can improve on. Mainly Im just thankful for that first good step."

Hightower still remains firmly on the roster "bubble," though, because of New Orleans depth at running back, led by Mark Ingram, C.J. Spiller and Khiry Robinson.

Robinson had an outstanding performance with the second-string offense Thursday night, highlighted by a 21-yard touchdown reception and a 29-yard run.

But even if the Saints dont decide to keep Hightower as a fourth running back, there are plenty of other teams that dont have the same kind of depth -- especially once injuries creep up. And for the first time in three years, Hightower is getting a chance to show all of them what he can do again.

Best of Late Night TV: Ruby Rose"s Justin Bieber Look and Connie Britton"s ...

Ruby Rose’s Water Jetboard Wild Ride - CONAN on TBS
If you"re like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don"t worry; we"ve got you covered. Here"s the best of what happened last night on late night.

Look, being Superman isn"t easy. Between the pressure to have a six pack and the pressure to, like, save lives all day, Henry Cavill has it rough. His dietary restrictions are intense to say the least, and he discussed them with fan-boy Jimmy Fallon on "The Tonight Show," who literally uttered the phrase "your arm is the size of my leg."

Reba McEntire also showed up on "The Tonight Show," and decided to "close up serenade" an audience member. It was weird, but also amazing.

Rita Ora swung by "Late Night" to chat about playing a crack addict in "Southpaw," and discussed the awkward time she got to set and everyone assumed she"d already been in hair and makeup for her "crack addict look." Well, that"s enough to traumatize someone.

Connie Britton also hit up "Late Night" and reacted to Amy Schumer"s "Friday Night Lights" skit. Turns out Coach"s wife and her glass of wine was Britton"s idea, which is the best news ever.

Finally, Ruby Rose stopped by "Conan" and wasted no time discussing the fact that she looks just like Justin Bieber. And also, she told Conan he looks like Tilda Swinton and Meryl Streep. Er, that"s a compliment, right?
