Delaware"s Nadjah Nicole wows "The Voice"

Maroon 5"s Adam Levine said he was "blown away."

"It was incredible," pop princess Gwen Stefani added.

And country star Blake Shelton flat-out gushed, "You look like a star. You sound like a star."

For Delaware"s Nadjah Nicole Pennington, 23, her introduction to America on Monday night"s season premiere of "The Voice" could not have gone better.

The Claymont-based soul singer, who performs under the professional name Nadjah Nicole, has been a mainstay on the Delaware music scene for several years, performing regularly across the state.

And while she is used to getting praise locally from fans after her powerful performances, it"s not usually from super-famous mega music stars on national television.

"I was just focusing on my legs not buckling," says Nicole, still in awe of her prime time, seven-minute segment on the hit show, which had won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Reality/Competition Program the night before. "I was ready to crawl into a little ball and boo hoo. I was so thankful."

The fourth "Voice" coach, hip hop/R&B performer and producer Pharrell Williams, was also an immediate Nicole fan, saying, "The show needs more voices like yours."

The day after her dynamic performance was aired, Nicole was busy fielding congratulatory messages from friends and family -- all while keeping her big secret about what happens in the next round of the show, which runs through the winter.

"I"ve been on my computer in bed all day because every time I move I get an e-mail or a text," she says. "Before the show aired, I could get on Instagram and reply to someone in two seconds, but now I"m struggling. It"s been overwhelming. I"m humbled."

It"s been a long road for Nicole, even though she turns 24 next month.

At the age of 12, Nicole began singing in front of audiences, whether it be at churches or weddings. By the time she was a student at Delaware Military Academy, she began singing the U.S. National Anthem at events and performed at everything from talent shows to open mic nights.

Her persistence paid off.

Soon she was at the Neighborhood-to-Neighborhood Street Festival in Philadelphia performing alongside headliners like Macy Gray and Robin Thicke and also nearly winning a singing contest at the Apollo Theater in New York.

In 2011, when she was 19, she was performing at an open mic night at World Cafe Live at the Queen in Wilmington when Gayle Dillman and Jeremy Hebbel, co-founders of the Wilmington-based event production and concert promotion company Gable Music Ventures, spotted her for the first time.

The pair had just starting their company and immediately went up to Nicole after her performance.

"She has star power. We booked her on the spot to play Film Brothers and it sold out," Hebbel says. "We could not be more excited for her."

Since then, they have teamed up for about 20 shows over the past four years at Wilmington venues like the Queen, Film Brothers, Extreme Pizza and others.

Nicole was one of the singers at the first three Gable-run Ladybug Music Festivals in downtown Wilmington, but was unable to perform this year because of the filming schedule for "The Voice." (Her open call audition was in January in Los Angeles and she returned to film the televised audition over the summer.)

And while "The Voice" took Nicole away from a Wilmington stage that night, she"s about to make up for it.

Nicole is headlining at the World Cafe Live at the Queen"s downstairs stage on Friday, Oct. 2 -- a show Gable Music Ventures booked a while ago to make up for the missed Ladybug festival. She"ll be backed by her four-piece band and a pair of back-up singers.

"I"ve been working and focusing on this Queen show, my daughter and bettering myself as an artist so much that I kind of went into hiding," she says. "I"m ready to come out and really show what I can do."

The timing couldn"t be any better. Early TV rating estimates report 12 million watched Monday night"s ninth season debut of "The Voice." That"s a lot of eyeballs seeing Nicole"s shining moment when she sang Janelle Mone"s "Tightrope."

Her TV turn has made her the talk of the state. After seeing Nicole on "The Voice," Wilmington City Councilwoman Hanifa Shabazz realized she has seen Nicole perform at a friend"s wedding and took to Facebook to congratulate her.

"She"s a young, black, beautiful female with great presentation fulfilling her dreams," Shabazz says. "I could not help but support her. And then she sang so well! We all should get behind her."

Nicole was seen on the program tearing up several times, especially early in her segment when the program delved into her personal life, including her unplanned pregnancy a couple of years ago.

"I didn"t tell my parents just yet because I didn"t want them to think that my life is over. I still don"t," she said on the show, breaking down as footage of her with her 2-year-old daughter Journey and parents Wayne and Khim in their New Castle home was shown. "But being here makes me feel like it"s not."

Nicole broke up with Journey"s father last year and works as a banker at WSFS in Wilmington. She lives in Claymont with her "little cupcake."

At the end of her segment, Nicole chose Big Barrel Country Music Festival headliner Shelton over Levine to coach her through the season, which resumes Tuesday night at 8 p.m. on NBC.

Before going to commercial after Nicole sang, Shelton was seen teasing Levine for being passed over by Nicole to be her coach. He joked around by pronouncing her first name closer to the word nausea: "Hey Adam, are you feeling any Nadjah right now? Are you Nadjah-eated?"

For her part, Nicole didn"t get too upset over the wordplay from her new country music star BFF: "Hey, it is what it is. A lot of people do it -- kids did it when I was in Girl Scouts, so I kind of expect it. I"m just glad he pronounced it right when he actually spoke to me."

How Dangerous Is The Cyber Caliphate?

What Would An ISIS Caliphate Look Like?

In August this year a British-born computer-hacker was killed by a US drone attack in Syria.

Junaid Hussain, 21, was said to have been involved in directing and encouraging online conspiracies against the West.

He was a member of the Islamic State"s "cyber caliphate" - and was also alleged to have obtained passwords of the YouTube accounts of the United States Central Command and used them to transmit pro-IS messages.

:: British IS Hacker Believed Dead In Drone Strike

Hussain started out as a disruptive teenage hacker from Birmingham who once gained access to Prime Minister Tony Blair"s address book, but he turned into a poisonous communicator and IS recruiter in Syria, clearly seen as a significant enough target to be worthy of an intelligence operation to track him down and take him out.

Play video "Support For UK Intelligence Service" Video:Support For UK Intelligence Service

The extremists hope that more hackers like Hussain can help their cyber caliphate evolve from using the internet as an effective propaganda tool to using it as a weapon that can kill people.

:: UK Cyber Weapons To Fight IS Hack Attacks

George Osborne thinks this is a possibility, and has announced a doubling of funding for cyber security, with an extra 1bn set aside for developing a new centre and strategy for combating digital warfare.

This was due to be in next week"s spending review, but off the back of the attacks in Paris, it has been announced early and the extra spending linked to protection against IS.

The Chancellor fears IS could use the internet to kill people by targeting "our electricity supply, or our air traffic control, or our hospitals".

He adds: "They have not been able to use it to kill people yet by attacking our infrastructure through cyber-attack.

"They do not yet have that capability. But we know they want it, and are doing their best to build it."

While online attacks against UK businesses are more likely to come from technically adept criminals or digitally advanced countries such as China in the battle for information and state secrets, the malevolence of intention attributed to IS makes the need of cyber security more urgent in the eyes of the general public.

This is, however, more than just a sales pitch from MrOsborne.

The IS cyber caliphate does indeed go beyond sending out messages to radicalise young minds.

In October this year it was reported by the FBI"s cyber division that IS was trying to hack US power companies.

FBI"s John Riggi was quoted as saying IS has "strong intent. Thankfully, low capability But the concern is that they"ll buy that capability."

:: PM: We Must Strike At IS In Syria

Also in October a hacker from Kosovo, Ardit Ferizi, was arrested in Malaysia for allegedly passing on details about US military and government personnel to IS.

These incidents seem to show not just intent, but clear steps being taken by IS to develop, or just buy in, a threatening cyber warfare capability.

The Chancellor believes "an on-line market-place has developed, which means all the elements of an attack can now be bought and assembled from the computer of anyone with the money to pay for it".

He adds: "The barriers to entry are coming right down, and so the task of the defenders is becoming harder."

As in the real world, terrorists are likely to choose soft targets.

If teenagers can hack into Talk Talk and damage their business then so can jihadists.

Companies and individuals are encouraged to check their own online security.

Mr Osborne believes we will be fighting a "hybrid war" against IS - both online and on the battlefield.

So when budgets are being squeezed elsewhere, Mr Osborne has made arrangements to boost GCHQ and the other security services with money that will come from the Ministry of Defence and the Home Office - and that means less money for normal soldiers and police.

This is the pay-off for doubling cyber security and boosting the number of spies and intelligence networks.

But while the hypothetical catastrophic examples Mr Osborne uses of IS gaining control of air traffic control are still well out of the terrorists reach - it"s not beyond imagination and certainly not beyond theirs.

"It sickens me": Ariel Winter fires back at body shamers over bikini picture

Ariel Winter Could Barely Stand Because of Weight of Her Breasts

Have something you want to say about Ariel Winter"s body? Then get ready for the 17-year-old "Modern Family" actress to strike back, hard.

The controversy erupted Friday when Winter posted a photo to Instagram of herself wearing a bikini, grinning along with her two young nieces:

Among the ensuing comments that followed (many of which were the equivalent of a thumbs-up), Winter received a barrage of negative thoughts, including some people who apparently thought that by wearing a bathing suit she was "asking for it."

Winter did not let that stand, and posted a second photo of a woman with her leg marked up, indicating what a skirt length might imply about her to some people (up high is "w***e," down low is "prudish").

And in the caption to that picture, she took those who left judging comments to task:

"Who knew that an innocent photo with my nieces would turn into this? The height of a girl"s skirt or whatever she is wearing for that matter, does not imply what she is asking for. It sickens me to think at 17 years old, a photo of myself with my nieces is suggesting that I"m "asking for it,"" she wrote.

"I typically never give power to the mean things people bravely say behind their computer screens on the Internet, but this is for the girls who are constantly bullied whether it be online or at school," she continued. "You are not asking for anything because of what you are wearing you are expressing yourself and don"t you ever think you deserve the negativity as the consequence to what you are wearing YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL. Celebrate you and don"t let anyone"s comments allow you to think less of yourself. Us girls have to stick together!!!!!!"

Fans have responded. On the original post, one wrote, "Currently deployed to Iraq, this is the kind of stuff I hate seeing. I"m just 2 years older than @arielwinter, and I"m over here doing this. I think she has the right to wear what she wants. It looks like you had a good time with your nieces!"

And on the second post, another wrote, "You are beautiful inside and out & such a wonderful role model for girls all over the world!!"

Ronda Rousey Didn"t Fix Her Own Fight and the UFC Has No Problem Making Belts ...

Holly Holm -- Stop Trashing Ronda Rousey ... She"s a Legend

Ronda Rouseylatest fightwas fixed according to a guy involved with professional wrestling. Whats his source? His imagination.Certainly not the part of his brain that uses common sense. Definitely the part of his brain that wants attention. And one of my colleagues, a wide-eyed wrestling fan, gave him that attention.

You know, sometimes I wish the Brock Lesnar era of mixed martial arts history never happened. Do fighters sometime exaggerate confrontations to help sell a fight? Yeah. Does the script end when the real fighting begins? Yes. Sure, some low-level fighter could throw a fight to make a quick buck, but the idea that the sports biggest star would allow herself to be knocked unconscious so that Well, Im not really sure. For those who missed it, heres the dumbest hot take on Rouseys loss yet:

You do not want your champion sitting home or making a movie, Roadhouse 2 or whatever Rouseys going to do, or whatever Rouseys going to do, or just needs a personal break, which shes earned. This girls earned it. But you dont want that person sitting home for five, six, seven months with that championship. ITS BAD FOR BUSINESS! TAKE THE BELT OFF HER!

There is just so much in that tiny portion of a paragraph. Fighters regularly take off that much time between fights because fighting is a very violent, dangerous thing. Bodies and brains need to recover. Training camps must be held. Fighters taking 3 or 4 or more fights a year is the exception and not the rule. Especially at the highest level.

And the idea that the UFC wouldnt want Rousey filming movies in between fights is absurd. All it does is raise her and the UFCs profile. And the final part TAKE THE BELT OFF HER! If you ever needed proof this guy doesnt know what the f**k hes talking about, heres a brief history of some UFC titles.

Dominick Cruz was named UFC bantamweight champion in a WEC event in 2010. He then defended that title twice in 2011 before facing a series of injuries. Cruz held his beltwithout actually defending it until January 2014 when the UFC finally stripped him of his title and turned the interim belt that had been held by Renan Baro since July 2012 into the real belt.

Jose Aldo, the UFCs featherweight champion since the division was first introduced in 2011, was injured before a title fight against company favorite Conor McGregor earlier this year. Aldo had defended his title in October 2014. When he had to pull out of his July 2015 fight against McGregor, the UFC immediately replaced Aldo with Chad Mendes and made it an interim title fight. McGregor won and has now been carrying around a false belt for 4 whole months. Aldo and McGregor will unite the belts next month.

Georges St. Pierre, one of the biggest stars in the history of mixed martial arts, walked away from the UFC welterweight title in November 2013 after nearly 6-years at the top. Four months later, the UFC held a welterweight title fight. Before that, GSP was injured late in 2011 so the UFC created an interim title. St. Pierre returned in November 2012 and united the titles.

Jon Jones, the former UFC light heavyweight champion, was the undisputed baddest man on the planet for the better part of four years. On January 3, 2015, he beat Daniel Cormier in his 8th straight title defense. On January 6th, he entered rehab. On April 27th he was involved in a hit-and-run. On April 28th, he was stripped of his title. Less than a month later, Daniel Cormier became the new LHW champion. Jon Jones will fight for the title again sometime next year.

Since 2002, the UFC heavyweight championship has changedwaists 15 times. Three people have been stripped of the belt twicefor positive drugtests, once for inactivity due to injuries. There have beenfiveinterim champions. There was even a situation where Randy Couturedefended his title at UFC 74 (August 2007)and then had a contract dispute with the UFC and declined a title fight.Antnio Rodrigo Nogueira beat Tim Sylvia for an interim title at UFC 81 (February 2008).Couture finally came back to fight Brock Lesnar at UFC 91 (November 2008). Lesnars two title defenses came against interim champions in June 2009 and July 2010.

Before all of that, Royce Gracie won a single-night tournament at UFC 1 in 1993. In 1997, facing pressure from state athletic commissions, they started using weight classes. Those weight classes evolved. The UFC added more weight classes. Then they added female fighters. Eventually, theyll add other divisions for both men and women.

The point is, the UFC machine rolls on no matter what. If they need a championship to promote a fight, they make one up. New weight classes. Interim titles. That belt that Rousey just lost? The UFC gave it to her at a press conference in December 2012 without her ever having fought in the promotion. Watch!

If they like you enough, they will literally give you a belt like its a watch at a retirement party. Ronda Rousey was planning on disappearing until UFC 200 which is scheduled for July 2, 2016. If you think the UFC needed to drum up interest in the womens featherweight title between now and what will be one of the biggest tent pole events in fight sports history, youre a f*****g idiot. Or youre just trolling for attention / pageviews / listeners.

The only person that will make more money in the longterm by throwing a fight to Holly Holm is Holly Holm. The odds that Holm retains the belt for an extended period of time and becomes a huge mulit-faceted star like Rousey is low. Its low for every mixed martial artist because of the uncertainty. Anyone can win at any moment. Thats what makes the sport so great and so frustrating. Sure, the Rousey Holm rematch will be huge, but thats likely the glass ceiling.

Rouseys mystique took a big hit even if she wins the title back in her next fight. FLoyd Mayweatherhas proven that winning is recession-proof. People again and again pay to watch perfection (a flop for Mayweawther is4x what UFC 191 sold) no matter how uninteresting the actual fights are. What happens when you lose? Ask Gina Carano. Thats the template for Rouseys post MMA career now.Win a fight, get cast in a big budget movie? Thats profitable. Gina Carano is just another working actress at this point. Her two projects in 2015? Direct-to-VOD.

If every MMA fan in America shows up to the box office to see Road House: Rousey Edition, that doesnt exactly make for a big weekend at the box office. Unless she gained a big cinematic following after her twolines in Furious 7. Remember the Entourage movie? She was in that. Apparently. I have yet to meet anyone who has seen it.

Rousey stood to lose everything by losing that fight. What if in the process of the work Rousey had her jaw broken or blown out a knee? UFC 200 would have immediately been off the table. How quickly could the movie offers dry up?Not to mention the fact that once a fighter gets knocked out, it seems theyre more susceptible to a knockout each time after that. What if Holly Holm gets lucky and knocks her out again? Straight-to-VOD. And heres the trailer
