UPS Integrad Driver Training Facility Opens in Cologne, Germany

HARDWARE Y STAND UPS - OVERWATCH

NEUSS/COLOGNE, June 07, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) --

UPS (NYSE: UPS) announces the opening of Europes first UPS Integrad site, a next generation driver training facility, in Cologne, Germany. The facility will train UPS drivers to hone their skills in safety, customer service and efficiency. Frank Sportolari, president of UPS Germany, and Hermann Grhe, Germanys Federal Minister of Health, recently attended a ceremony to inaugurate and tour the site.

The new UPS Integrad facility will prepare UPS drivers to serve customers safely and efficiently, by using a teach me, show me, let me approach. Drivers will learn the UPS driving and service methods, will be shown how the methods work, and will then practice them in a realistic, hands-on fashion. UPS Integrad training uses a mixture of 3-D computer simulations, webcast learning modules, and traditional classroom instruction to complement activity in a controlled environment in order to reinforce safety, delivery and customer service training.

UPS customers expect superior service from their driver, said Frank Sportolari, president of UPS Germany. UPS Integrad curriculum teaches drivers safe, efficient work methods that are designed to enhance that service.

One of the training sites notable features is an outside course designed to mimic a small town called Neustadt, with real streets, traffic signs, sidewalks and simulated businesses as well as home delivery and collection points, providing drivers with realistic situations they would encounter in their daily activity. These include safe driving and parcel handling procedures, alternating delivery scenarios and attention to detail. UPSs integrated delivery network requires a single driver to handle all types of packages air, ground, domestic, international, commercial, and residential.

Separate classes focus on training-the-trainer for driver supervisors so that they can instruct the drivers at regular intervals in their local UPS centers. Supervisors are shown how to guide and teach their employees, and impart the necessary skills.

Both new as well as experienced UPS drivers in Germany will receive UPS Integrad training and this facility will also be the training ground for UPS drivers from other European countries. UPS Integrad curriculum teaches the same methods used by UPS Circle of Honor members an elite group of more than 8,700 active UPS drivers who have driven without experiencing an avoidable accident for 25 years or more.

UPSers in Europe can now benefit from the proven success we continue to have in the U.S., said Joe Finamore, UPS vice president of Global Leadership and Talent Development. With UPS Integrad training we are building on an ongoing commitment to bring UPS drivers the very best training available and developing them into tomorrows Circle of Honor members.

UPS Integrad curriculum was conceived in 2005 when UPS was awarded a $1.8 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor to study how young people learn in an increasingly digital world. Incorporating the results from that study, UPS collaborated with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Virginia Tech and the Institute for the Future to build a next generation training facility, the first of which opened in 2007 in Landover, Maryland.

To date, more than 7,500 drivers and over 1,500 driver supervisors have completed UPS Integrad training at the seven existing U.S. training locations.

UPS (NYSE: UPS) is a global leader in logistics, offering a broad range of solutions including transporting packages and freight; facilitating international trade, and deploying advanced technology to more efficiently manage the world of business. Brock Turner deserves county jail, not state prison

Behind The Headlines - Inside the Brock Turner trial

Former Stanford swimmer Brock Allen Turner, left, arrives with family and his lawyer Mike Armstrong, back center, at the Santa Clara County Superior Courthouse in Palo Alto, Calif. (Karl Mondon)

Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge Aaron Persky will have to perform a legal incantation Thursday if he follows a probation recommendation and sentences Brock Turner to county jail rather than state prison. Persky should do it. Turner doesn"t belong in prison.

The former Stanford swimmer, 20, was convicted of three felony charges in late March in connection with the sexual assault of an unconscious woman outside a fraternity party on campus in January, 2015.

Turner was rightfully convicted. I wrote a column earlier this year praising the two Stanford students, both from Sweden, who interrupted the assault and chased the drunken athlete down.

But probation officials, who see hundreds of less remorseful defendants, had it right. Turner should be given six months in county jail. He is not, as the prosecution has it, "a continued threat to the community."

Why do I say that? The probation people cite his lack of a criminal record and what they see as genuine remorse. His attorneys have argued that the ex-swimmer has a record of real accomplishment.

"I would give anything to change what happened that night." Turner wrote in a statement to probation authorities that was quoted in a defense brief. "I can never forgive myself for imposing trauma and pain on (the victim)."

Severity

Nobody should be confused about the severity of this case for him. For the rest of his life, Turner will have to register as a convicted s*x offender. That effectively closes many career avenues. It"s a permanent blight.

Herhold: Thanking Stanford students who subdued s*x assault suspect

Deputy District Attorney Alaleh Kianerci, has urged the judge to disregard the probation recommendation, saying, "the fact that the defendant preyed upon an intoxicated stranger on a college campus should not be viewed as a less serious crime than if he were to assault a stranger in downtown Palo Alto."

In the abstract, Kianerci is right. We should not give people breaks because they go to Stanford. But it is hard to judge this case apart from its context. And that context has messy elements that a summation of the charges misses.

Turner met the victim at a party at the Kappa Alpha fraternity. Both were drunk: The woman was so drunk that she does not remember what happened. On the stand, she acknowledged having blacked out on several previous occasions while drinking.

At some point, the two lay down on the ground near a trash bin, where Turner assaulted the woman, who was unconscious when the Swedish students came upon the scene. He was convicted of assault to commit rape of an intoxicated woman, sexually penetrating an intoxicated person with a foreign object, and sexually penetrating an unconscious person with a foreign object.

Culture of drinking

You don"t have to buy Turner"s story that he so was drunk himself that he did not realize she had passed out. But it"s hard to review this case without concluding that it has roots in a culture of campus drinking, the unindicted co-conspirator here.

And that brings me to my final point. Because of a long history of ignoring sexual assaults on campuses, particularly by athletes, we have become more vigilant about prosecuting them. And that is commendable.

But there is a temptation to see the Turner case as a chance to send a message, rather than to weigh all the messy human elements involved.

Judge Persky should find, in legal terms, that there are "unusual circumstances" here and give Turner a county jail term. His conviction stands as warning enough. We don"t need the last pound of flesh.

CAPE TOWN, June 6 (Reuters) - Equatorial Guinea"s energyminister on Monday said Schlumberger (LSE: 0CT7.L - news) had walked awayfrom the country"s Fortuna floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG)project but he also said he was confident it would besuccessful.

Fortuna, Africa"s first deep-water independent floatingliquefied natural gas project, is one of a number planned whenenergy prices were higher. The offshore field is expected toproduce 2.2 million tonnes per annum.

Oil and gas explorer Ophir Energy (Other OTC: OPGYF - news) in April said ithad ended talks with Schlumberger over the U.S (Other OTC: UBGXF - news) . company"supstream participation in Fortuna.

Energy minister Obiang Lima said he was confident theproject would go ahead and be successful, with Equatorial Guineataking an equity stake via its state-owned companies.

"Some people were a little bit hesitant after Schlumberger (Hanover: SCL.HA - news)left but the problem with Schlumberger is that they wanted tomonopolise everything and we don"t want that," Lima toldReuters on the sidelines of an oil and gas conference in CapeTown.

"Some people thought they left because the project was notprofitable. That is not the case - it was because they wanted todo everything and we cannot allow one service company to doeverything," he said.

Schlumberger was not immediately available to comment.

Ophir said it was talking to a range of equity investors, aswell as gas buyers, to help to finance the project.

"We"ve done all the work in a very difficult environment todeliver a very investable project, (including) bringing down thecapital costs of first gas by half to what they were 12 monthsago, to $450 million, which is huge," Bill Higgs, Ophir"s chiefoperating officer, said. Ian McShane would f*****g love to make a Deadwood movie

Ian McShane: Career In Four Minutes

All right, listen up, you shitheel cocksuckers, because Ian McShane is only going to say this once, unless of course he gets interviewed about it a bunch more times, which he almost undoubtedly will: Hed be f*****g thrilled to do a Deadwood movie, okay? In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actor expresses enthusiasm for returning to the role of Al Swearengen, and not just because it will allow him to speak the way he likes to anyway, but without the shocked glances. Of course Id love to reprise that, McShance says, while somehow managing to not spit on the floor and knock out some g*******d bastards teeth. He goes on:

How could one not, when it was snatched away rather unjustly by a combination of forces well never know abouthubris or money or whatever. But [Deadwood] certainly finished too early. At the time, most of us working on the show were incredulous. Its been announced by HBO so its not like Im saying it. I know for a fact David is working on the script. Its been 10 years since it finished. [Star Timothy Olyphants] free from Justified. Im hoping theyll make the deal soon, for two or four hours, whatever they decide on.

This makes it sound like theres still some work to be done before HBOs official greenlight of the moviewhich was announced earlier this yearactually turns into a production. Still, McShane knows what he knows, you f*****g sons of b*****s, and is more than happy to speculate about what it will involve. Im sure David will decide to set it 10 years later, after the great fire or whatever happened in Deadwood. They havent done the deal yet. They [were planning] to do it late this year or early next year, he says. Hopefully it will have a better fate than David Milchs similarly shut-down-before-its-time Luck, as long as HBO can keep the horse deaths to a minimum.
