Dutch woman jailed in Qatar after reporting rape may face charges

CNN Student News - 06/01/16

The 22-year-old woman, whom CNN has identified only as Laura, was at a hotel bar having drinks with a friend, but then had a drink that made her feel "very unwell," according to Brian Lokollo, a lawyer who was hired by the woman"s family.

She reportedly woke up in an unfamiliar location and realized "to her great horror" that she had been raped after her drink was spiked, Lokollo said.

When she reported the rape to the police, she herself was imprisoned.

"I don"t know what the charges are. To my knowledge she is being held in custody because she reported that she was raped," Lokollo told CNN Sunday.

Charges unknown

According to Lokollo, she is due to appear before a judge in the Qatari capital Monday where the official charges will be heard for the first time.

The Dutch government and its embassy in Doha are in close contact with the defendant and her family in the Netherlands, according to a statement from the embassy.

"We have provided assistance to her since the first day of detention. For the sake of the defendant"s case we will not make further comments at this point," the statement added.

The Qatari authorities could not immediately be reached for comment.

Adultery a crime

"Adultery," or "fornication outside of marriage," is a crime in Qatar as well as other countries in the conservative Muslim Gulf regardless of the marital status of those involved.

According to Qatar"s Penal Code 2004 (Law No. 11), "anyone who copulates with a female above sixteen without compulsion, duress or ruse is convicted to no more than seven years in prison. The same penalty is also imposed on the female for her consent."

In the nearby United Arab Emirates in 2013, a Norwegian woman who reported being raped by a colleague was sentenced to 16 months in jail, charged for having unlawful s*x, making a false statement and the illegal consumption of alcohol.

Marte Deborah Dalelv was later pardoned by Dubai"s ruler.

NBA Finals Reset, Warriors-Cavs Game 5: The end of the Golden Brick Road

Warriors vs Cavaliers: Game 4 NBA Finals - 06.10.16 Full Highlights

The Golden State Warriors have seemed pre-ordained to repeat as NBA champions since the moment the season began, with their dominant victory over the New Orleans Pelicans all the way back on opening night.

On Monday night, their long journey to the NBA title could come to an end as they look to close out the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 5 of the NBA Finals. Outside of an injury to Stephen Curry that caused the Warriors to lose a total of two games in the first two rounds, and an impressive, admirable effort from the Oklahoma City Thunder in the second round, the Warriors have cruised this season.

The Cavaliers thought they might have found something after a dominant Game 3 victory, but their success was fleeting. The Warriors corrected their issues, played with more intensity, got their 3-point shot to fall, and took a dominant 3-1 series lead. The numbers are not good for the Cavs" chances of a comeback, as you"ll see below, and the usual "but they have LeBron" response doesn"t resonate because the Warriors have essentially neutralized James despite his quality per-game numbers (more on that below as well).

The Warriors look to clinch their first-ever back-to-back NBA championships Monday night in Oracle, 9 p.m. ET on ABC. Here"s where the series stands after Game 4.

THE BIG PICTURE

Before Game 4, I warned that it was very much possible that instead of finding adjustments and a solution for the Warriors, that Golden State just had a bad game. If so, there was every reason to think they would play better and win Game 4, effectively ending the series. That"s what happened. Though they started off rocky, and the Cavaliers lead by eight points at one moment, it wasn"t enough, and the Warriors eventually splashed their way to a win.

No team has ever lost after going up 3-1 in the Finals (32-0). Surprisingly, teams are just 13-10 in Game 5"s at home after going up 3-1, so there"s at least a little hope that Cleveland can push the series back to Cleveland to give themselves a chance at the biggest comeback in NBA Finals history, but in reality, this is done. The Warriors have led for the majority of the series, dominate in nearly every statistical category, have won all the matchups, neutralized LeBron James, stymied Kyrie Irving, negated J.R. Smith, and likely have already gotten Kevin Love traded. All that"s left is to figure out how many games it takes, where the Warriors stand as an all-time team, and where the Cavaliers go from here.

Oh, and what happens with Draymond Green out.

WITH DRAYMOND GREEN SUSPENDED

With Green out, expect the Warriors to move Iguodala into the starting lineup. USATSI

The Warriors can still win. Green has been terrific, with the Warriors outscoring the Cavs by 13.6 points per 100 possessions with him on the court. He"s defended LeBron James, knocked down 3-pointers, made key passes, and helped get into James" head while protecting the rim. Yet Golden State is at home, and if Green is out, the emotion of playing without him might be enough to carry the day.

With Green out, expect the Warriors to move Iguodala into the starting lineup, with a modified smallball unit featuring Andrew Bogut at center. Their smallball advantage is less with Bogut on the floor, but their versatility at 1-4 still gives them an advantage, especially since the Cavaliers will still be starting Tristan Thompson. Mo Speights likely gets more time, and that helps the Cavs, but if the Warriors simply shoot the lights out as they are prone to at any time and especially at home, Golden State can still secure the title.

Green will not be allowed into the building until after the game was over, so any championship celebration will likely have to wait until he was through security and into the building.

ADJUSTMENTS

CAVALIERS

Well ... I"ve got very little for you. Benching Kevin Love helped for a while. He was better vs. the non-starter lineups in the first half, but finished with a minus-4, primarily when the Warriors started targeting him again. Richard Jefferson, his replacement, was a minus-1, even in the first half. There aren"t really any answers for the Cavaliers. They have to shoot the lights out and hope the Warriors play well. That"s really it. If the Warriors play well, they simply can"t beat them. That much is apparent at this point.

The Math Problem: The Cavaliers actually dominated the paint in Game 4, winning 48-20. (They outscored the Warriors by 28 points in the paint and lost by nine!) They won on the offensive glass, with 25 second-chance points to 19 by the Warriors.

But the Warriors hit 11 more 3-pointers. That"s your ballgame. That"s your series. That"s your season.

The Warriors had 11 more attempts from deep than the Cavs, and that"s a number that gets lost. You have to be able to prevent the Warriors from getting those shots up, which is the hardest part of defending them. The Cavaliers set the record for most 3-pointers earlier in the playoffs vs. Atlanta with 25 made 3-pointers. The Cavs had 25 attempts from deep in Game 4. Being able to make 3"s often isn"t as important as being able to generate 3-point looks in volume, and, even more importantly, being able to restrain the number of those attempts.

The Cavs have to shut down the Warriors" perimeter attack at any cost. Surrender layups. Abandon the mid-range. But they have to stay locked down on shooters, particularly after offensive rebounds.

LeBron has been solved: I never thought I"d reach this point, at least not until he was at least 34, but the Warriors have solved LeBron James, and made him into just another multi-talented forward. His numbers are still great, but his impact is not. The Cavaliers have been outscored by 6.6 points per 100 possessions with James on the floor in this season. Teams almost never outscore James" team when he"s on the floor, but the Warriors have done it two years in a row, this year with the Cavs at full strength. (The Spurs also did it in 2014, so "almost never" really applies to "teams that aren"t elite," I suppose.)

Will LeBron go down without a a fight? Probably not. USATSI

Iguodala bodies him on the catch in the post, challenges his dribble on the drive. The Warriors also bring swiping help and contest at the rim, the perimeter defense stays home on shooters, and they prevent the offensive rebound. James is frustrated; that was evident in Game 4. There are no adjustments he can make because he can"t magically get his jumper to a place it was two years ago. It"s going to take a full year of work to get it back to where it needs to be, with adjustments to his legs and form. There is no easy remedy.

The best all-around player in the league (even if Curry is "the best player in the league") has been rendered impotent (without force or effectiveness) and it is a credit to the Warriors" defense that he can"t save them.

WARRIORS

The 1-2 pick and roll: The Warriors made a few tweaks in their pick-and-roll game to free up the Splash Brothers in Game 4, and they worked. Zach Harper broke down the ways that Curry and Thompson freed themselves in Game 4 with help from the Cavaliers" poor defensive attention. The Warriors used Thompson as the screener, forcing the Cavaliers into an impossible decision between not trapping Curry and leaving him in space and leaving Thompson wide open. No good options. More of that in Game 4 will secure the repeat.

No letdowns: The Warriors didn"t bring their best selves in Game 3, and it cost them. They were complacent, and while everyone got excited about what the Cavs were doing, in the end, it was just about the Warriors not bringing the energy they needed. Green"s suspension looms large here. He"s the emotional engine of the team, Steve Kerr always says the Warriors "need his fire." With him out, someone will have to be that emotional spark plug. Maybe it"s Curry, maybe it"s the typically reserved Thompson, maybe it"s Andrew Bogut, constant veteran. Whoever it is, they need that to keep their energy level high. Feed off the crowd, play your game, and secure a second-straight title, cementing a dynasty in the Bay.

THE NUMBERS
  • The Warriors are 6.5-point favorites in Game 5, the highest they"ve been favored in this series. Took a while but the books and the public finally gave up on Cleveland
  • Teams have never lost a 3-1 lead in the Finals (32-0).
  • Teams are just 13-10 at home in Game 5 of the Finals after going up 3-1.
  • Teams are just 5-7 after losing Game 3 and winning Game 4 to go up 3-1 per WhoWins.com.
  • The Warriors have 29 more assists on just six more made field goals in this series. That is incredibly telling.
  • Golden State has outscored Cleveland by 60 points from the arc in this series.
  • The Cavs have more rebounds, more points in the paint, more second-chance points, and more fast-break points in this series.
  • Channing Frye is the only Cleveland rotation player with a positive net rating (plus-5.5 per 100 possessions.)
  • Per ESPN, the Cavs are plus-31 with LeBron James on the floor and Andre Iguodala off the court in 44 minutes in this series. They are a minus-48 with James and Iguodala both on the floor, a stunning testament to Iguodala"s repeat-Finals-MVP candidacy.

Kodak Black Says Lockjaw Hook Started as a Freestyle

Kodak Black - Everything 1k [Lil BIG Pac]

On Thursday, French Montana and Kodak Black released the music video for their summer hit, Lockjaw. In a new interview, Kodak reveals that the songs hook was originally a freestyle before it became the fully fleshed out chorus that it is now.

The beat came on, and [French] was trying to figure out the hook to it, says lil Kodak in the video above. He was in the booth trying to go off the head with a melody to try and come up with something. I didnt even really like how he was coming with it. I came up with something better in my head. So I told him to record me.

The 18-year-old continues, That song, we made it weird. It wasnt all at one time. The hook wasnt supposed to be the hook, really. Then [French] was like, Oh, we can just keep repeating it and then we made the hook.

The Ben Billions-producedtrack is a sonic masterpiece about drugs, liquor, women and guns. French and Kodak use a back-and-forth strategy fortheir braggadocious verses, and the music video amplifies the overall effect. Neighborhood folkshow off their motorcycle and ATV tricks and flash wads of cash as the NY and Floridarappers take the viewer on a tour of Port-Au-Prince, Haiti and Broward County, Fla..

In other Kodak news, the up-and-comers new mixtape, Lil B.I.G. Pac, is set to drop tomorrow (June 11), and its got a collab with Gucci Mane on it. Lockjaw will appear on Montanas forthcoming album, MC4.

What Movies Has O.J. Simpson Been In? He Really Tried To Make It As An Actor

The O. J. Simpson Trial: Drama of the Century (2015)

When you hear the name O.J. Simpson, you tend to think up images from his famous 1994 trial (where he was found not guilty) or, if you are of the younger variety, scenes from the recent FX hit, American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson. In that case, you probably see Cuba Gooding Jr. in your mind rather than the famed football player-turned actor-turned accused murderer. Yep, Simpson was intent on being an actor, but you aren"t alone in asking, what movies has O.J. Simpson been in. That"s right, O.J. Simpson was trying hard to build some sort of movie career and although he will likely never be remembered as a movie star or even an actor, the proof is in his would-be career in show business.

Of course at the time of his trial, O.J. Simpson was well known for his Hertz commercials and for being a football superstar, but there had always been a part of the charismatic camera-ready man that obviously yearned for stardom on the big screen. And, believe it or not my fellow young millennials, he definitely made it in some capacity. But what movies was O.J. Simpson in? Unsurprisingly, none of O.J. Simpson"s movies were cinematic classics and hits like those in the n***d Gun series, but damned if Simpson didn"t give it all he had. Even if it wasn"t much.

GIPHY

You know how when an athlete guest stars in a TV show or makes a cameo in a movie, even if you don"t realize they"re a famous football or basketball player, you can usually tell that they are because of their awful acting chops? The lines delivered in the most cringe-worthy of ways? I won"t say O.J. Simpson was as bad as an athlete showing up on an after school special, but a huge movie career he did not make, even with several movies like these under his belt.

The Towering Inferno (1974)

Simpson appeared in The Towering Inferno, alongside Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway, so it wasn"t a bad group to be cast with. Based on a novel, almost the entire movie centers around a fire in a huge office building and the people inside trying to get out. You know, kind of like a Michael Bay film in the "70s.

The Diamond Mercenaries (1976) GIPHY

Think of this as an Oceans 11 before (and after) its time. The Diamond Mercenaries is about a group of jewel thieves trying to pull off some crazy diamond heist.

The Cassandra Crossing (1976)

Taking pretty much any role you"re offered has its perks. Especially for Simpson, when he got to work with Martin Sheen in The Cassandra Crossing. The movie is like a Contagion-esque scenario, except everyone who is infected is stuck on a train speeding through Europe.

Capricorn One (1977) Warner Bros.

This one actually sounds kind of good. It"s about the cover up of a faked NASA mission and also stars Elliot Gould and James Brolin in his heyday. OK, so we don"t exactly talk about this movie today, but it had to have some value in its time, right? Right?

Firepower (1979)

O.J. Simpson had a pretty big role in Firepower, about a fugitive on the run and the several people after him for different reasons. Yes, a fugitive. We can"t even make up the irony in that.

The n***d Gun (1988)

As a crime drama spoof, The n***d Gun did everything right. It even got in a cameo of an attractive former pro football player who would go on to appear in both of its sequels. Is it a timeless classic today? Well, it remains high ranking on both IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes, which currently has it at at 86% fresh rating. So there"s that.

The n***d Gun 2 1/2: The Smell Of Fear (1991)

Obviously Hollywood can"t just quit while they"re ahead, like ever. Sequels are the stuff that can either totally ruin a movie or leave people wanting yet another one. In this case, it just makes you appreciate the first movie on its own. With the same sort of humor and pretty much the same cast, The n***d Gun 2 1/2 grossed about $8 million more than its predecessor, but remains slightly inferior to the original.

No Place To Hide (1992)

Simpson starred with Kris Kristofferson and a young Drew Barrymore in this thriller mystery about the death of a teenage ballerina and the sister she left behind, who becomes a target herself. Is it the stuff Oscars are made of? Probably not, but you have to give O.J. Simpson props for getting in on another movie with some pretty decent leads.

n***d Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult (1994)

When you"ve got two movies making close to $100 million each, you have to add a third and make a trilogy, right? Luckily for O.J. Simpson, he was welcomed back a third time to the n***d Gun franchise, reprising his painful role as Nordberg, best friend and partner to Leslie Nielsen.

Obviously O.J. Simpson"s movie career wasn"t super expansive or even impressive, but that seemed to be his goal for the better part of his career during and after football. In fact, he was trying to break into big time acting right up until his trial in 1994.

Here"s OJ Simpson"s Parole Hearing From "OJ: Made in America" (Video)

New Film "O.J.: Made in America" Explores The Life Of OJ Simpson | Morning Joe | MSNBC

Simpson said in the 15-minute hearing in 2013 that he wasnt like other inmates

ESPNs new documentary OJ: Made in America, opens with stunning footage of a 2013 hearing in which NevadaParole Commissioner Susan Jackson asks OJ Simpson about that time he was arrested in 1994.

Simpson appears shocked that Jackson, like almost everyone else in America, doesnt know the details already. The 1994 arrest was for the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Mark Goldman. Simpson was acquitted the next year, but sentenced to 33 years in prison in 2007 for trying to steal sports memorabilia he said was stolen from him.

After the hearing,Simpson was granted parole on some charges. But he was ineligible for parole on the others, which means he will remain behind bars for the time being.

The 15-minute video of the full hearing (above) includes many details that that the first episode ofOJ: Made in America does not. Simpson begins by sayingthat when he first arrived at Nevadas Lovelock Correctional Center, he vowed to bethe best person that theyve ever had here. He sayshe thinks hes succeeded.

Ive not had any instances, despite all those stories in the tabloids and everything, he says. I havent had one incident since Ive been here.

He also says many inmates have told him about robberies they pulled even one guy who robbed a gun shop, which I think took a lot of guts.

Simpson says he isnt like the other inmates, who tried to steal other peoples possessions.

My crime was trying to retrieve for my family my own property, property that was stolen from me, he said, adding that California officials have ruled that it did in fact belong to him.

Simpson also says he missed his sisters funeral and two of his childrens college graduations while behind bars. He say he deeply regrets confronting the men he believes stole from him.

I wasnt as civil as I should have been, he said.

He is asked if alcohol was a factor, and concedes it might have been but says he never had a drinking problem.

I was celebrating a wedding and I had been drinking all day, he said. I didnt feel that I was drunk but I also didnt think that I was capable of driving an automobile.

In an interview with TheWrap on Thursday, former Los Angeles County District Attorney Gil Garcetti, who led the unsuccessful double-murder case against Simpson, said he thought Simpsons Nevada sentence was too harsh. He said it seemed like payback for Simpson avoiding prison in the murder case.

Our job is to seek justice, Garcetti said. Justice was not served when OJ Simpson was acquitted. But in my mind, justice was not served either when he was sentenced to 33 years for the crimes for which he was convicted.

As magnificent as The People v. O.J. Simpson was, Made In America brings a scope to the infamous murder trial that has never been attempted before

22 years removed from the Trial of the Century, and just a few weeks removed from "The People v. O.J. Simpson," you may wonder if there"s anything "O.J.: Made In America" can say that hasn"t been said already. Director Ezra Edelman once thought the same thing, but his five-part epic has expanded the scope of this one trial to include 50 years of American culture and conflict.

Wales captain Sam Warburton admits New Zealand"s superior fitness told in the end

New Zealand v Wales Full Match HD (Test 1) Spring Tours

Warburton did, though, feel that Wales would be better for the experience and that the final score gave the scoreboard an unjust look.

You have to go through those games and experience that to get better, he said. I think we will. You cant train at that high intensity during the week otherwise you wont be able to last for the game. That try at the end was a bit disappointing and made the scoreline look a little bit ugly, even though they fully deserved to win.

Wales now play the Chiefs in Hamilton on Tuesday, with Luke Charteris captaining a side that has seven starters- Scott Williams, Gareth Davies, Rob Evans, Scott Baldwin, Tomas Francis, Jake Ball and Ellis Jenkins- who appeared in Auckland, while Bradley Davies, Ross Moriarty and Gareth Anscombe are on the bench.

Theyve got a big week, havent they, with the hometown game for Warren (Gatland)? said New Zealand head coach Steve Hansen in reference to his opposite number. Theyve got a 35-man squad, but Im pretty pleased were not playing on Tuesday.

Colombia vs. Costa Rica, score update: Ticos take two-goal lead

Colombia vs. Costa Rica

Heading into Saturday"s Copa America Centenario action, it seemed like the advancement scenarios were reasonably well set: If Colombia and the United States simply secured a single point apiece, they"d go in as the Group A winner and runners-up, respectively. The United States took care of their part, beating Paraguay.

But Costa Rica has managed to make Group A very interesting, despite coming into their game eliminated. Los Ticos jumped out to an early lead with a 2nd minute goal, went ahead again on an own-goal and now lead 3-1 after Celso Borges scored this beauty.

If Costa Rica can hold on, that would mean that the USA wins Group A and would play the Group B runners-up in Seattle on Thursday. That would most likely be Ecuador, but could still be Brazil.
