Why do people hate Harrison Barnes but love David Lee?

Warriors To Move On From Harrison Barnes, Andrew Bogut

As rumors swirl that David Lee could make a Warriors return, we examine the divide between fans" love for him and their disdain for Harrison Barnes.

After convincing Kevin Durant to come west and bath in the glory of a golden, Silicon-Valley-money-infused-wonder-vision, the Warriors were forced to renounce their rights to Harrison Barnes and Festus Ezeli, as well as trade beloved big man Andrew Bogut. Andrew and Harrison will reunite in Dallas, whereas Festus will find a home within the next few days.

Given the uncertainty of the roster beyond the "Big Four plus one" of Stephen Curry, Kevin Freakin Durant, Draymond Green, Klay Thompson, and NBA Finals MVP Andre Iguodala, the Dubs will be forced to get creative to fill out the bench. They made their first big move last night, as they signed former Dallas big man (and almost-NBA-starter) Zaza Pachulia to a one year, $2.9M deal.

However, could we see another member of the Mavericks frontcourt make his way to the Bay? A certain blonde haired, beloved former-Dub?

Via TMZ:

"Well see what happens," he said, multiple times as those dudes got up in his face. Man... I hate basing pieces off of TMZ videos, but thats the unfortunate world in which we live. If youre famous, and if youre out and about, and if your name has been floated in rumors about rejoining your former team, some loud-mouthed kid with a camera is gonna chase you down at a Fourth of July party and scream-yell some questions about your basketballing future.

"Well see what happens, you guys are great," he said, grimace-smiling as he tried to get into his car to bounce outta that scene.

But, could this actually come to fruition? Could we see Lee make a return to the Warriors? And beyond the basic cap/money implications, would you want this to happen?

Even though David Lees defense was never, um, stellar, and even though he starred on a series of lovable but ultimately ineffective Warriors squads, what is it about DLee that inspires such loyalty from a large swath of fans? Why is it that we are so quick to embrace him, when we are just as quick to hate hard on Harrison Barnes?

Perhaps Tim Kawakami put it best:

When the Warriors landed Kevin Durant, some people were arguably just as excited that it meant now the team would never have to consider matching a max deal for Barnes. In his piece yesterday, Nate Parham said, "To be quite honest, the Warriors not matching that contract for Barnes is almost as big a relief as landing Durant is satisfying."

Oof.

Tell em what you think!

But, Id be lying if I said I felt differently. The idea of Harrison Barnes being the highest paid player on this team just felt....ugh. I felt like Steven Adams in this picture. It just felt wrong, even given the market, and given some other stupid contracts wed just seen agreed upon (whats up Mozgov?). We always knew that someone would offer Barnes the max, and then depending on Durants decision, the Warriors would be forced to match if KD left them at the alter.

Luckily, as Nate said, we never have to worry about that again.

But the deeper point is: Why do many Warriors fans love David Lee unconditionally, while hating Harrison Barnes?

Harrison is a smart, hardworking, likable, interesting dude. Ill love him forever after he made this video, with the Mercury News Marcus Thompson.

You dont often find a player with his depth of curiosity, empathetic smile, and sense of humor. Or, rather, those types of guys dont always open up to the media, or to the fans. So why were people so dark on him?

It couldnt just be his lack of ball handling, or his no-show in Games 5, 6, and 7 in the finals. Because if our irrational love or hatred of certain players was purely based upon their basketballing skills, wed surely hold a grudge against David Lee as well, right? (Cue Nate nodding ferociously).

Perhaps its because David Lee was like our first love. David Lee, alongside Stephen Curry, took the Warriors out of the basement of irrelevance and placed them on a national stage. For the first time since 2005, people were taking notice of the goings on in the Bay. Hey man, the first cut is the deepest. No matter what David does, h**l always be loved.

However, Harrison Barnes is more like the popular girl (Becky) in high school who you always had a huge crush on but then when you finally drunkenly hooked up years later on Thanksgiving Eve when you were both home from college, it was wildly, wildly unsatisfying. All your crazed expectations could never be met. Theres no way Becky could ever be as cool/smart/interesting as youd always dreamed. And, simultaneously, you realize that spunky girl named Meghan who everybody always thought was kind of cool but no one actually wanted to date cuz she had a really strange laugh suddenly turned into a bombshell and is finishing up her physics degree from Harvard and is the founder of some dope music festival that was recently acquired by AEG and youre like, "godamn Meghan, I love you. Why did I ever think Becky was so hot?! WHYYYYYY." Meghan is Draymond Green in this scenario, duh.

So, you inevitably start throwing shade at Becky because youre embarrassed you ever fell for her so hard. And then Becky is like, "Yo, you gonna put a ring on this, or what?" And youre like, "Yo, what about this [moderately priced, simple] ring," and shes like, "Yo, you wanna put a ring on this you need to bring that BLING." So you stall and wait and see whats gonna happen, but then at the last moment Mark Cuban swoops in and gives her that dope ring and you dont ever have to look at those depressing Kay Jeweler websites ever again.

Also, in this scenario, Kevin Durant is just still Kevin Durant, awkwardly sitting in the middle of the room as you try to figure out your complicated love life and youre like, "Yo Kevin Durant, whats good?"

He nods, sagely, and proceeds to get buckets.

But anyways, loving and/or hating players in the NBA is such a strange reaction. Ive said this before, but we only think we know these guys. You cant judge a players game based off your emotional response to their existence. Its just not fair, to yourself or to the player.

And yet, thats how we are hardwired. We seek emotional, moral confirmation by way of our sports fandom. We seek to find the hidden meaning behind it all. We yearn to understand players convictions and reasons for playing. Its just how we are.

People will continue to love David Lee and loath Harrison Barnes and, really, thats just how it is. I dont understand it, but I dont have to.

Anyways, enough of that. Here"s a simple question: How would you feel about a David Lee return?

WikiLeaks Published Over 1200 of Hillary Clinton"s Iraq War Emails

BREAKING: How The FBI Got It Wrong On Hillary Clinton

It just got much easier to read Hillary Clintons emails.

On Monday, whistleblowing website WikiLeaks tweeted a link to 1,258 emails that it claims were sent and received by the former Secretary of State pertaining to the war in Iraq.

The emails were part of a trove of 30,322 emails made available by the U.S. State Department as a result of a Freedom of Information Act request, according to WikiLeaks.

While the emails were available since February of this year, the tweet was timed to Wednesdays release of the so-called Chilcot report, which will outline the U.K.s involvement in the Iraq war. According to the New York Times, the report is likely to be the definitive assessment of a conflict that is widely seen in Britain as the worst foreign policy blunder since the 1956 Suez crisis.

The release also coincided with an announcement made Tuesday by FBI director James Comey FBI Director James Comey that no reasonable prosecutor would bring a criminal case against Hillary Clinton and that the organization found no intentional misconduct.

Although there is evidence of potential violations, our judgment is that no reasonable prosecutor would bring such a case, Comey said in a press statement. We are expressing to [the] Justice [department] our view that no charges are appropriate in this case.

The Justice department will now make the final decision as to whether to bring charges against Clinton for using a personal email server during her time as Secretary of State. Attorney General Loretta Lynch has said that she expects to follow the FBIs recommendation.

Kevin Durant Fallout: If Russell Westbrook Is Traded, Should Celtics Pursue?

Russell Westbrook Finds Out Kevin Durant Signed To Golden State

And now, the Kevin Durant fallout begins.

The former NBA MVP sent shockwaves through the league Monday when he announced his intentions to sign with the Golden State Warriors, a blockbuster decision with the potential to make the Warriors a dynasty.

Of course, Durants decision affects a lot more parties than just himand the Warriors. Its also a huge blow to the Oklahoma City Thunder, who just saw the most important player in franchise history leave to join the team that defeated OKC in the Western Conference finals.

The Thunder now have some very important decisions to make. Do they try to rebuild on the fly and build around superstar point guard Russell Westbrook? Or, do they tear it all down and start over?

One thing that might affect the Thunders decision is Westbrooks contract situation. The 27-year-old is entering the final season of his deal, and it now sounds like hes very much willing to start looking around at other potential teams rather than sign a long-term extension to stay with the Thunder.

That certainly seems to open the door for a trade. Westbrook, at his best, is one of the NBAs best, most competitive players. Hed be a huge asset to gain for any team in the league, but trading for Westbrook now comes with obvious risk, as theres no guarantee hed sign a long-term extension with his new team and skip out on free agency.

Which brings us to the Boston Celtics. Considered by many to be a relative long shot to sign Durant, the Celtics appeared to be in the running for the former MVP until the very end. Losing out on Durant obviously stings, especially for a team that likely considers itself a superstar player away from being a legitimate contender.

So, could the Celtics turn their attention to Westbrook? Bostons assets make it an ideal trade partner for the Thunder. The Celtics essentially own the Brooklyn Nets first-round pick in 2017, and they also own Brooklyns first-rounder in 2018. They also have a host of good young talent, all of which could ultimately be attractive for a team suddenly staring a rebuild in the face.

But would it be worth the risk with no guarantee the Celtics could keep Westbrook in Boston for the long term? Thats obviously one of the many questions Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge and his team must now ponder.

Ben Simmons stellar before early exit with cramps in summer league debut

Ben Simmons Full SL Highlights 2016.07.04 vs Celtics - 10 Pts, 8 Rebs, 5 Assists in NBA DEBUT!

Big name after big name came off the board.

The Sixersreportedly had interest in veterans like Jamal Crawford and Rajon Rondo. Younger, restricted free agents like Harrison Barnes, Dion Waiters and Allen Crabbe had been linked to the team at one point or another.

With big contracts being handed out like candy, Sixers fans wondered, "When are the Sixers going to get involved?"

There"s debate as to how serious the Sixers were about some of the guys they were linked to. They supposedly made a "significant offer" to Crawford. Before free agency started, they were said to be willing to offer Barnes and/or Waiters max deals. Whether it was on purpose or by accident, Bryan Colangelo may have been wise to sit back and watch the madness unfold.

While more sought-after players agreed to terms with other teams, Colangelo and company didn"t make a big splash. They agreed with veteran combo guard Jerryd Bayless on a three-year, $27 million deal last week. On Monday, they signed Spanish point guard Sergio Rodriguez who had a stint in the NBA before returning to Europe to a one-year, $8 million deal (see story).

Sure, the logjam still exists in the frontcourt, and as far as long-term fits for the backcourt, Bayless, 27, and Rodriguez, 30, likely don"t fit that description. But during the 2016-17 season, they make the Sixers better.

Bayless and Rodriguez aren"t All-Stars. At best, they"re likely good bench pieces on a winning team. Bayless has played on winning teams in the NBA. He"s played in 29 playoff games (two starts) and averaged 21.3 minutes per game. Rodriguez who was a teammate of Bayless" for one season in Portland hasn"t played a ton of big minutes in the NBA, but led his team, Real Madrid, to a Euroleague title in 2015. (The Euroleague is widely regarded as the second-most competitive league in the world.)

As far as fits on the court, both players make sense. They"re not the greatest defenders, but offensively they"re a great complement to the Sixers"biggest building blocks. Bayless shot a career-best 44 percent from three on a career-high 231 attemptslast season. Rodriguez shot 40 percent from distance overseas the last five years. That will give the team proper floor spacing and allow Ben Simmons more room to do his thing. Rodriguez also demonstrates the ability to excel in the pick-and-roll. He"s a true point guard, which will help the game of whichever big men are still on the Sixers" roster.

Consider this: The Sixers" top-six perimeter players from a minutes-per-game standpoint last season were Ish Smith (32.4), Robert Covington (28.4), Hollis Thompson (28), Isaiah Canaan (25.5), Nik Stauskas (24.8) and T.J. McConnell (19.8). With all due respect to those players, you"d have to consider Bayless, who"s played important NBA minutes, and Rodriguez, the 2014 Euroleague MVP, upgrades over several of them.

Bayless and Rodriguez weren"t the names Sixers fans were l*****g over, but who did you really want? Kevin Durant and Mike Conley weren"t coming here. Not to rip a guy like Barnes, who"s had a solid NBA career and helped the Warriors win a title, but are you upset that the Sixers didn"t offer a guy like that max money? Are you disappointed they won"t pay a 30-year-old Rondo to dominate the ball and bring his attitude to town?

Just because the Sixers have money, it doesn"t mean they need to spend it. Next offseason, the cap will rise again and the ridiculous contracts will continue. Stephen Curry, Russell Westbrook and Blake Griffin will be in line for serious raises. By 2018, Chris Paul, DeMarcus Cousins and James Harden will be looking to cash in.

The point is, for the next several seasons, there"ll be money to spend and players to spend it on. The Sixers"best player will turn 20 years old in a couple weeks. They have a top-three protectedpick (which will be unprotected in 2018 if it doesn"t convey this season) from the Lakers and an unprotected first-round pick in 2019 from the perpetually struggling Kings. They alsostill have the right to swap picks with Sacramento next year.If they continue to give Simmons a solid supporting cast that will help him develop and help the profile of the team, the Sixers can become an attractive destination.

Before you know it, the Sixers will make their big splash. It just doesn"t appear to be this year. And that may work out for the best.
