Google honors Nettie Stevens, the geneticist who discovered XY chromosome

Nettie Stevens (1861 - 1912) Doodle

Google is honoring Nettie Stevens, the American female geneticist who was one of the first to describe the chromosomal basis of s*x. She came up with the XY s*x-determination system, mostly found in humans to classify gender.

Females have two of the same kind of s*x chromosome (XX) and are called the homogametic s*x. Males have two distinct s*x chromosomes (XY) and are called the heterogametic s*x.

Nettie Stevens Google Doodle, aka logo, has the XY replacing the Os in the Google logo. Nettie Stevens is showed looking through a microscope at the chromosomes with other genetic-based imagery around the logo.

Nettie Stevens was born today, 155 years ago, on July 7, 1861, in Cavendish, Vermont. She passed away at the age of 50 from cancer on May 4, 1912, in Baltimore, Maryland.

In her short life, she published about 40 papers and was a leading force on genetics.

Watch the Music Video Rose McGowan Directed for Yoko Ono"s Catman

Rose McGowan at the1998 MTV Awards

Speaking of Rose McGowan whos been the news because, earlier today, she had an op-ed (responding to Owen Gleibermans op-ed on Renee Zellwegers face) published inThe Hollywood Reporter it turns out the actor/musician/director/activist also has a new music video out today. Though McGowan herself has in the past released her own music and accompanying videos (as with theher RM486 video, directed byJonas kerlund), todays is actually a video directed by McGowan for the Miike Snow remix of Yoko Onos song, Catman. (The track is on her newest LP,Yes, Im a Witch Too,though it was released in its original form onApproximately Infinite Universein 1973.)

The video is mostly a recording of a choreographed dance between a younger women and a group of dancers over the age of 60, who begin planted in school desks and then join in the dance.

McGowan said in a statement:

Yoko Ono has been an ardent supporter of women and modern dance for years. Casting women dancers over 60, including one with cancer, was my way of showing that vitality doesnt die with age. I used color overlays to create my own visual beat.

Jon Jones still wants to work with Floyd Mayweather but there"s one problem

Jon Jones is out of UFC 200 | Kenny Florian on what happens next

UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones was dead serious when he said he wanted to join Floyd Mayweather"s vaunted "Money Team" but there"s only one problem.

Jones can"t get Mayweather to return his call.

According to Jones, he spoke to Mayweather at length a few months ago about the possibility of joining his growing squad of fighters and businesses to do some kind of work together, but since then the two fighters haven"t talked at all.

"Floyd Mayweather called me and we had a nice long conversation about doing some things together and I haven"t heard from him since. Floyd, come on man give me a call," Jones told TMZ this week.

Both Jones and Mayweather touted their previous conversation together while teasing the possibility that they would join up in the future for some kind of business endeavor.

Mayweather even spoke highly about Jones and how he stuck by the interim light heavyweight champion even when he was going through a dire legal situation last year following a hit-and-run accident in New Mexico.

"Jon Jones -- I"ll be to see you in a couple weeks in Albuquerque, New Mexico in training camp. You know I stand behind you, Jon Jones," Mayweather said in late May. "When you went through a little roller coaster ride, everybody turned their back on you -- we"re still here for you."

Apparently, Mayweather never made that promised trip to visit Jones in camp as he prepared for his upcoming fight against Daniel Cormier at UFC 200.

Either way, Jones is still interested in teaming up with Mayweather and he holds the pound-for-pound boxing champ in very esteemed regard.

"Absolutely, I would love to work with Floyd Mayweather," Jones said. "I really respect a lot of things he"s been able to do in business and he"s inarguably the most successful combatant that"s ever done it.

"Being in line with a great champion like him would be awesome."

Nettie Stevens: Was Mann und Frau genetisch unterscheidet

GOOGLE, DOODLE, NETTIE STEVENS

Nettie Stevens lebte vom 7.

Football transfer rumours: Chelsea hold talks with Lionel Messi?

FC Barcelona best goals 2015/16: TOP 10 LEO MESSI

TRIGGER WARNING: Be aware that if youre a Sheffield United fan, the following paragraphs might contain some upsetting information that will dredge up bad memories from the past. You might feel sweaty, nervous, your breathing might become more difficult, you may experience flashbacks. Please, if you are of a delicate constitution, then take great care in reading on.

The long and the short of it is this: West Ham want Carlos Tevez back. Theyre trying to get the old band back together, that old freewheelin group of heroes who narrowly avoided relegation on the last day of the 2006-07 season, and they want Tevez on lead guitar. The one slight snag in proceedings is the cash.

Related: Manchester United complete signing of Henrikh Mkhitaryan on four-year deal

We tried to get Tevez but he wanted 250,000 a week, David Sullivan is quoted as saying in the Daily Mirror. In his last year at Juventus he was great. But 250 grand a week? All this business I love West Ham. Well, its I love West Ham if they give me 250 grand a week. So how much love is that for West Ham? I actually offered him 150 grand a week to come back plus bonuses He was a fantastic player. But where do you draw the line with what you are prepared to pay?

Where indeed. Should they draw that line, then a move for Milans Carlos Bacca or, interestingly, a spot of hijacking on Christian Bentekes proposed move to Crystal Palace might be the way West Ham go. One might ask the same question of Manchester United. Word is that they want Paul Pogba so very badly that they are very well prepared to pay huge, massive, colossal dollops of wonga to be more precise, 100m. Yabba dabba doo. 100m! The weird thing about transfer fees is we long passed the point where we should be surprised at what players cost, it essentially doesnt matter how much they cost (as long as the club in question has the money and it didnt come from nefarious sources), and yet 100m! For one man! In years to come maybe people will be laughing at this the way we chuckle when hearing the quaint protests at Alf Commons 1,000 pricetag but 100m. Snakes alive.

And one would think it will take rather more than that to sign Leo Messi, but according to the ol Currant Bun, Chelsea are investigating just that possibility. Apparently Roman Abramovich has been wining and dining Messis agent (his dad) on his superyacht (weve seen the pictures it is indeed quite super), at this stage seemingly feeling things out to get first dibs on Messi should he ever wish to leave Barcelona. Its probably not a coincidence that this news emerges the day after Messi was sentenced to 21 months in jail, which he wont actually serve inside, but theres no such thing as a bad time to secure a little leverage for any future new contract talks. At a rather different end of the scale, apparently Emanuele Giaccherini fancies joining Antonio Conte at the Bridge. Sure.

Meanwhile, Manchester City are also counting out the pennies. Word is that Pep Guardiola fancies adding some meat and class to his midfield, and has set aside 60m to pay for Toni Kroos. They might have to find another 50m if they want John Stones, but they can do that safe in the knowledge that John Stones wants them, according to the word on the street/the Daily Mail.

Speaking of City, a couple of things you might have missed from your super soaraway Guardian today: Peps boys are also looking at a 51m bid for Juventus defender Leonardo Bonucci, but the Italians arent minded to sell. Elsewhere in these parts, Liverpool are set to offer Jrgen Klopp a new contract for reasons unclear, Middlesbrough are set to sign Victor Valds but arent quite so keen on Robin van Persie, while Spurs havent made a new offer for AZ striker Vincent Janssen.

As related in previous Rumour Mills, Tottenham are after Gini Wijnaldum, but have been told in no uncertain terms by Newcastle theyll have to stump up 25m. Not quite as dear is Jordon Ibe, but Bournemouth are still putting up a supposed 15m for the Liverpool winger. Joe Allen could be another one leaving Anfield, with Sevilla keen on the Welsh Xa...actually, no, hes probably quite upset this morning, lets not take the mick now. Leon Osman is a free agent that one had passed the Mill by, but not Leeds, ear to the ground like the faithful transfer dogs they are, who are keen on signing the 35-year-old. 35! How did Leon Osman get to be 35? They grow up so fast.

And thats your lot. Unless youre fussed about Kieran Richardson signing for Birmingham on a free. Are you?

On National Kissing Day, celebrate the science and art of kissing from chemical sparks to the thrill of early ...

National Kissing Day! ♡BillDip♡

Ive always looked forward to the same part of every date, movie and romance the kiss. From first kisses that leave us weak in the knees, sending the body aflutter with a rush of pleasure-inducing chemicals, to those that leave a (literal) bad taste in our mouths, as a culture weve mastered the art of the make out. Philematologists kissing scientists tend to agree that kissing began as a way for mothers to transfer food to their babies. Like birds, kind of. But the practice evolved to take on a largely romantic connotationto becomevalued in many cultures throughout the world.

Today marks #NationalKissingDay, one of the more fun pseudo-holidays to celebrate, both in theory and in practice.

According to dating site Zoosk, 47percentof singles report that its acceptable, if not expected, to kiss on a first date. Given the myriad technologies designed to facilitate dating and hookups in the digital age, its necessary for lovers to differentiate themselves from all the other options. We crave a connection to something greater than ourselves on a biological level, and our bodies have evolved to help us weed out potential partners via kissing.

The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) is a protein associated with immune system health that helps ensure an organism has a variety of immuno-defenses in order to survive. Levels of MHC have been found to exist in saliva, which has some scientists believing it plays a role in the level of satisfaction we have when kissing certain people.

If two peoples MHCs are too similar, it means their immune systems are also similar, which could be potentially dangerous for any future offspring. If MHCs are dissimilar, the potential offspring will have the built-in mechanisms to protect them from a multitude of immunological threats this is what we want. So it might be that the sensation we sometimes feel from kissing a certain person is partially caused by the chemical reaction that occurs when dissimilar MHCs collide sparks.

How much practice we have at puckering up also says a lot about our romantic behaviors.

The Zoosk survey found that 29 percent of male respondents reported theyve locked lips too many times with too many partners to count. Interesting enough, 29percentpercent of women say theyve only kissed between 0-7 people, a low number which might reflect female participants desire to minimize their kissing history on a dating survey. Regardless, kissing methods serve different purposes for each gender.

In 2007, psychologist Gordon Gallup Jr. studied kissing perceptions of 1,000 undergraduate students at the State University of New York at Albany, and found the fairer s*x placed a higher value on kissing. Female respondents overwhelmingly reported the necessity to kiss before having s*x, and were also more likely to encourage kissing during s*x. Males, on the other hand, seemed to use kissing as a means to an end to achieve s*x, which may explain why so many male respondents reported they were unable to remember how many people theyve kissed in the Zoosk survey.

When researching this story, I took to Facebook to determine how my friends perceive kissing, and found its a topic people tend to be pretty, er, loose-lipped about. Not only did I receive many comments on the actual post, but also texts, phone calls and emails from people wishing to share some of their most memorable kissing experiences.

Some people shared kissing pet peeves that seem to be pretty standard: bad breath, tight lips, too much tongue. Most people I talked to prefer some level of push-and-pull a lip nibble here and there along with some neck play. The Zoosk study found that 63percentof people find being kissed on the neck second only to being kissed on the lips.

What touched me the most was how many memorable first kiss stories I heard. One friend was first-kissed in first grade by a foreign exchange student on a slide, while others (myself included) had slightly less romantic experiences.

In high school my best friend and I had crushes on two older boys who happened to invite us to a Fourth of July celebration. We immediately built up the fantasy being kissed under the fireworks under an expanse of sky in the desert of west Texas and began planning our outfits and looking up any information we could find. We wanted to have some idea of what we were doing. But as with most romanticized ideas, the fantasy went up in flames. The boys ditched us, and we ended up inadvertently setting a small bush ablaze with our sparklers. Talk about learning a lesson on expectations at a young age.

The weight we put on kisses, especially first ones, reveals a lot about how highly we regard the act. Sure, its easy to find a stranger to kiss and never see again, or to dismiss kissing as thefirst base to round in a more elaborate game, but I think kissing is a fundamental interest and treasured activity for many people. Im not one for very much sentimentality, but do find #NationalKissingDay as potentially thrilling as it is silly, much like the rush of serotonin and adrenaline we get from a good kiss itself. How wonderful, to be wooed.

Report: Warriors, David West agree to 1-year, $1.55 million deal

David West Signs With Golden State Warriors | 2016 NBA Free Agency

The Golden State Warriors have reached an agreement on a one-year, $1.55 million contract with free agent forward David West, according to NBA.com"s David Aldridge. West was reported to have interest in signing with the Warriors this time last year after opting out of the final season of his contract with the Indiana Pacers, but decided to join the San Antonio Spurs.

MORE ON KEVIN DURANT

This is the second straight summer where West has elected to take the veteran minimum in order to compete for a championship. Clearly, after adding Kevin Durant in free agency, Golden State is the team best positioned to win a title next season.

West is not joining the Warriors to simply sit on the bench while their four All-Stars win him a ring. To make room for Durant, they had to trade Andrew Bogut and renounce their rights to Festus Ezeli. It is possible that Marreese Speights, Anderson Varejao and James Michael McAdoo will all be gone, too. On Monday, Golden State reached an agreement to sign Zaza Pachulia, who will likely start at center, but will be frontcourt minutes available for West in the second unit.

Next month, West will turn 36 years old, so it"s understandable that he"s not the player he once was. In this system, though, he"ll find open jumpers the same way that Speights did. He"s not necessarily an ideal fit because he doesn"t have 3-point range, but his ability to shoot from midrange, basketball IQ and leadership make him a sensible signing at this price. He"ll be a great addition to the locker room, and it will not be surprising if he wound up in the Warriors" front office when he retires.

David West is reportedly going to the Warriors. USATSI
