Being Tim Duncan

Tim Duncan & Gregg Popovich - Draft Night to Retirement

When I was a kid, my favorite baseball players were Carl Yastrzemski and Jim Rice of the Red Sox, but in the National League, it was Willie Stargell. Great hitters. One team guys.

When we said goodbye to them at the end of their careers, it was goodbye. Not like now, when you have the heartache of getting beat by the guy you rooted for last year. We pretend it doesnt hurt.

It wasnt unusual to stay in one city, and not because you were stuck there. Mike Schmidt was a Phillie, but couldve gone anywhere. Lou Whitaker and Alan Trammell were career-long team-mates in Detroit, when it was not easy to be a Tiger. Premier QBs like Staubach and Elway. Tons of NHL players too.

I get why that changed, and Im not kvetching, but it makes Tim Duncans run here in San Antonio special. Guys dont do it that way anymore.

In fact, the more I think about his retirement, the more I think we may not see his kind again. One city. No off-season drama. Zen-like focus and contentment. He was happy here. He wouldve been happy anywhere.

Watching him play basketball reminds you of whoever taught you to play the game. Fundamental. Not selfish. Pass. Help your team mates. Win with everyone, not a solo act. Practice. You make a basket, you get down the other end. Not look around to see if everyone, or anyone, noticed. Your postgame interview was your game. What I did out there, yeah, thats my statement. Genial to fans, but not trying too hard. Generous when no ones looking. Not a clown, but humble and humorous enough to make those ridiculous yet lovable HEB commercials. And look at the camera like, can you believe were doing this?

Come to think of it, maybe we will see his kind again. I thought his kind was gone 20 years ago, but suddenly, there he was. Maybe being Tim Duncan is the dream, to some kid messing around after school, a hoop over the garage door. I specifically wanted to be Yaz.

Probably someone, somewhere, on a playground or driveway, specifically wants to be Tim. Good luck, kid.

Who"s likely to get top jobs in Theresa May"s cabinet?

Theresa May set to be new U.K. prime minister by Wednesday
Image copyright AFP/Getty

Most of the tension around here today is in the Labour Party.

The shadow cabinet is just finishing up, and the party machine is preparing for a crucial, emergency meeting of its National Executive Committee this afternoon.

At that meeting, a decision is meant to be made on how the party"s rules around a leadership contest work.

The question: Does an existing party leader need to get the nominations of MPs to get their name onto the ballot for the vote? Or does the party"s leader automatically get on to the ballot?

The party"s official legal advice is understood to say that the leader does require fresh nominations. Legal advice sought by Jeremy Corbyn says the opposite, that he, or frankly any leader, has an automatic right to be on the voting paper.

It matters so much because Labour is now into a leadership contest, and hardly anyone believes that Jeremy Corbyn would get enough support from MPs to get on to the ballot this time round.

The NEC is meant to decide what the actual position is this afternoon. Whatever it rules, both sides are so dug in that there could be a legal challenge. Extraordinary as this is, if the party officially rules that Corbyn does not have an automatic place, he might take the party he leads to court.

If the NEC rules that he does have that automatic place, then a different chunk of the party machine might take that decision to court too. You read that correctly - one part of the Labour machine might, by the end of the day, be taking another part of it to court.

Meanwhile, David Cameron has chaired his last cabinet, the removal vans are parked up at the back of Downing Street, and the Tories are embarking on one of Westminster"s favourite pastimes - guess the cabinet.

There are, of course, all sorts of theories, suggestions, plots about plots, and hot tips - it"s the kind of place where everyone likes to feel they are the first to know - but frankly, few do.

Theresa May is someone who keeps her views close to her and her small team - so guesses are just that, a stab in the dark.

However, for fun, even just so I can be proved wrong in the next couple of days, here are a few shots at it after conversations with various different players in the game.

There is a consensus that Philip Hammond, the foreign secretary, will become the chancellor, doing what might be one of the most powerful job swaps in the land with George Osborne.

After too long in the Treasury bunker, most people expect him to be moved out. Chris Grayling is likely to head up the negotiations over us leaving the EU, in charge at whatever ministry is created to mastermind that process.

Image copyright AFP/Getty Image caption Will Michael Gove and Boris Johnson feature in Theresa May"s cabinet?

As a prominent Eurosceptic who didn"t get down in the gutter in the campaign, he is likely to rise, having run Theresa May"s short campaign too.

James Brokenshire, Theresa May"s long-serving Home Office minister, is likely to be put in charge at that department - not a bad reward for years of having to defend the government"s struggling immigration policy at the despatch box.

Stephen Crabb is likely to be left where he is, John Whittingdale might be moved out of the culture brief, potentially to be replaced with Damian Green, a Europhile who was also part of May"s campaign team.

Priti Patel and Justine Greening are likely to be moved up, Nicky Morgan to be moved out, Amber Rudd and Sajid Javid both thought to be likely to stay where they are.

I"d heap layer after layer after layer of caveats on top of all of that. Most of those predictions, some mine, some from others, are likely to be wrong!

It is a big and complicated process, and it"s likely that May"s team haven"t worked it all out yet. But the biggest question of all is whether or not this will be a reshuffle that tries to move on from the recent times, and ship out George Osborne, Michael Gove and Boris Johnson.

Some in Westminster think Theresa May, who prizes loyalty and trust, might be bold.

It would be bold to deny all three cabinet jobs, but would send a very strong message to the rest of the party that their way of doing politics, and the psycho drama of the campaign, is not how Theresa May wants things to work.

But the next prime minister also wants to symbolise experience, stability and unity. How to juggle all of that and build the right team at the same time is quite a task.

See Snoop Dogg Stumble on "Family Feud" Marijuana Question

Snoop Dogg And The Game Hold Peace Rally Alongside LAPD

Snoop Doggand his family squared off against boxer Sugar Ray Leonard and his brood on Sunday"s Celebrity Family Feud, where one of the questions aligned with one of the rapper"s areas of expertise: Marijuana. Unfortunately, the answers didn"t go Team Broadus" way.

Sidebar 10 Things We Learned at Snoop Dogg"s Denver Weed Launch

Host Steve Harvey asked, "Name something grandma might do if she caught grandpa smoking marijuana." Snoop hit the buzzer with lightning speed with the answer, "Put hands on him," an answer that needed further clarification from the judges. While "Beat His Old a**e" was the fourth most popular response in the survey, Leonard took control of the category with the Number Two answer, "Yell/Scold Him."

However, the Leonards were unable to guess all the correct answers, so Snoop Dogg and the Broadus family had one more shot at redemption. It did not go well, with Snoop guessing that grandma would recommend grandpa go into the weed-selling business. Unsurprisingly, the Leonards won the points in the round.

As a bonus, Celebrity Family Feud offered up Snoop"s full Fast Money round as a web exclusive. Snoop"s answers are, once again, unconventional: Needing one point for the win, Snoop was asked to name one place where you can find a pie. His response: A horse, an answer zero people surveyed responded with. Thankfully, despite Snoop"s attempts to conspire against them, the Broadus clan ended up victorious.

Nicola Sturgeon independence referendum threat to Theresa May "unjustified and irresponsible"

David Cameron CAUGHT HUMMING A TUNE after announcing resignation & Theresa May as new Prime Minister

Nicola Sturgeon will today be accused of making unjustified and irresponsible threats of a second independence referendum after warning incoming Prime Minister Theresa May that a rerun of the 2014 vote is on the table.

The First Minister congratulated Mrs May on her victory in the race to succeed David Cameron and said she expects early engagement with the new Government on Brexit.

But Ms Sturgeon then made clear she does not accept that Scotland has to leave with the rest of the UK and, referring to a second referendum, warned the next Prime Minister that all options must be on the table to achieve that.

However, Ruth Davidson will today denounce the First Minister for piling uncertainty on top of uncertainty by exploiting the turmoil that followed the Brexit vote for political gain instead of acting in the national interest.

In a speech to the Commons press gallery, the Scottish Tory leader will say there has been no groundswell of demand among Scots for another independence referendum as voters recall the divisiveness and toxicity of the 2014 one.

She will also argue that the problems associated with Brexit will not be solved by leaving an even more important union in the United Kingdom. Scotland exports more than four times as many goods to the rest of the UK as it does to the EU.

Ms Davidson welcomed Mrs May succeeding Mr Cameron, saying it gives the country certainty and stability and a Prime Minister who has the experience, the judgement and the leadership to start that job from day one.

The Scottish Tory leader offered her full support to the long-serving Home Secretary, whom she supported in the Conservative leadership contest, and it is understood they will try and hold face-to-face talks in London today if their diaries allow.

David Mundell, the Scottish Secretary and another supporter of Mrs May, argued that she could keep Scotland in the UK by delivering a really good deal with the European Union.

Report: 95% Chance Pro-Life Indiana Gov. Mike Pence Will be Donald Trump"s VP

Governor Mike Pence Speaks At The NRA-ILA Leadership Forum (2016)

Indiana Governor Mike Pence, a pro-life governor hailed by pro-life groups for recently signing a bill to ban abortions targeting babies with Down syndrome, is seen as Donald Trumps most likely running mate. Pence has quickly become the subject of speculation as the most likely choice for the presumptive Republican nominee.

Pence is a pro-life champion who has signed multiple pieces of pro-life legislation into law and led the fight in Congress to de-fund Planned Parenthood. His selection would go a long way towards mollifying concerns some pro-life voters have had about Trump, who has campaigned as a pro-life candidate but who has made some misstatements on abortion and Planned Parenthood.

One report suggests there is a 95% chance Pence will become the vice-presidential nominee and Twitter is abuzz today with talk about a rally the Trump campaign in planning in Indiana for next Tuesday.

SIGN THE PLEDGE: I Pledge to Vote for a Pro-Life Candidate for President

A Donald Trump campaign stop in Indiana scheduled for Tuesday is raising speculation that the presumptive Republican presidential nominee will announce Gov. Mike Pence as his running mate.

The Washington Times reported Sunday evening that Pencehas a 95 percent probability of being Trumps choice, according tosources close to the campaign and to the governor.

Trump has said he will make an announcement before the Republican National Convention, which begins on July 18. Pence, who is seeking reelectionto a second termas governor, would have to withdraw from that contest bynoonon July 15if hes going to run as Trumps vice president.

Former Trump adviser Michael Caputo said Sunday hes putting all his chips on an announcement at the event next week.

Right guy. Right timing. Right place #TrumpPence2016, he tweeted.

Earlier this year, Pence signed House Bill 1337, which would ban abortion doctors from knowingly aborting an unborn baby solely because of a genetic disability such as Down syndrome, the unborn babys race or s*x. The bill also has several other abortion-related measures, including a requirement that aborted or miscarried babies bodies be cremated or buried and another requirement that abortionists who have hospital admitting privileges renew them annually. The burial/cremation requirement backs up a law passed in 2015 by Gov. Pence requiring that aborted babies bodies be disposed of in a humane way.

Throughout my public career, I have stood for the sanctity of life. HEA 1337 is a comprehensive pro-life measure that affirms the value of all human life, which is why I signed it into law today, Governor Pence said in a statement.

Pence continued: I believe that a society can be judged by how it deals with its most vulnerablethe aged, the infirm, the disabled and the unborn. HEA 1337 will ensure the dignified final treatment of the unborn and prohibits abortions that are based only on the unborn childs s*x, race, color, national origin, ancestry, or disability, including Down syndrome.

He also started a state investigation of the Planned Parenthood abortion business after it was caught selling body parts of aborted babies.

Previously, Pence led the Congressional effort to defund the abortion corporation.

Reports show that Planned Parenthood, Americas largest abortion provider, receives nearly one-third of its $1 billion annual budget from the federal government. And its about to get worse, because Obamacare is hiding even more tax dollars in handouts for abortion providers, Pence explained at the time.

Nearly 3,500 abortions are performed every day in America. Thats 3,500 lives taken away, many on the government dime without the knowledge or direct approval of taxpayers! Its reprehensible and we cant allow it to continue, Pence added.

Pence referred to the Pledge With America that House Republicans put forward before the elections promising to dismantle ObamaCare, which contains a full prohibition on abortion funding, and to cut off taxpayer funding for abortions in other areas.

Im ready to deliver that promise with legislation that will prevent abortion providers like Planned Parenthood from receiving a single dime from the federal government, the Indiana congressman wrote. With a new Republican majority, Planned Parenthood is running scared.

Pence said then he was not surprised Planned Parenthood attacked him for pressing for defunding.

The fear of losing their federal funding has led them to target me for my pro-life positions. Theyve even named me to their 2010 Election Hall of Shame for advocating a pro-life agenda on Capitol Hill, he said. But I refuse to back down.

Our tax dollars should not be spent on abortions. I know it. You know it. Lets make sure every member of Congress knows it, he concluded.
