Germany attacks: What is going on?

Germany: what we know so far on Munich attack

Germany is reeling from a series of four violent attacks in a week in its south.

Ten people have been killed and dozens more injured in separate gun, bomb, axe and machete attacks. Three were in Bavaria and one in Baden-Wuerttemberg.

The authorities say they were not linked - but do they herald a new era of insecurity for the country?

German press concern at spate of violence

What has happened?

On 18 July, a teenage Afghan refugee hacked at passengers on a train in Wuerzburg with an axe and knife, wounding five. He was shot dead by police.

On 22 July, a German teenager of Iranian heritage shot dead nine people in Munich before shooting himself dead.

On 24 July, a 21-year-old Syrian refugee killed a woman with a machete and wounded five other people as he fled before being arrested.

Later that day, a 27-year-old Syrian whose refugee application had been refused blew himself up outside a bar in Ansbach. Fifteen people were wounded.

Were they terror attacks?

The attack in Wurzburg has been claimed by so-called Islamic State (IS) while the Ansbach bomber had videos on his phone showing him pledging allegiance to the group, Bavaria"s interior minister said.

The attacker"s bomb was packed with metal fragments and he had been attempting to gain entry to a music festival which more than 2,000 people were attending.

However, police have ruled out a political motive for the killings in Munich.

Gunman David Ali Sonboly was inspired by other mass shootings that had no political motivation, such as a school massacre carried out by 17-year-old Tim Kretschmer in Baden-Wuerttemberg in 2009.

Sonboly carried out his attack on the fifth anniversary of the 77 murders by far-right extremist Anders Behring Breivik in Norway.

Investigators in Reutlingen said the Syrian machete attacker knew his victim and the attack was probably to do with their relationship.

Any links?

German government spokeswoman Ulrike Demmer said the attacks were not connected and did not show a "consistent pattern".

But Raffaello Pantucci from the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) says the first attacks may have influenced what was to follow.

"Was the Ansbach bomber waiting for the right moment because all these other things were happening? It would not surprise me to find out that some activity was accelerated," he said.

Did mental illness play a role?

Sonboly had a history of mental illness. He had spent two months as an inpatient at a mental care facility in 2015, was depressed and feared contact with others, the Munich prosecutor"s office said.

Image copyright EPA Image caption The attacker in Reutlingen was arrested after killing a woman

The suicide bomber in Ansbach had also spent time living in a mental care facility and had twice attempted to take his own life, officials said.

In Reutlingen, the attacker also showed signs of being mentally disturbed.

He was also already known to police for assault, theft and drugs offences, police said.

Is the refugee background relevant?

The big influx of refugees to Germany was already controversial, so the fact that three of the attackers arrived as refugees is likely to sharpen criticism further.

The German government has already attempted to deflect this, saying the risk of someone being a perpetrator of terrorism is not greater among refugees than among the general population.

"Most of the terrorists who committed attacks in Europe in the past months were not refugees," said Ms Demmer.

Image copyright EPA Image caption "Not in my name" - refugees in Wuerzburg protest against the attack by a 17-year-old asylum seeker

However, there were likely to be a few individuals with "psychopathic tendencies" as well as links to criminal and terror networks among such a large group of people, Mr Pantucci said.

Should Germany expect more attacks?

Germany has not yet suffered a massive terrorist attack of the type seen in Paris and Nice - but that does not mean it is not a target, Mr Pantucci says.

Returning jihadists are known to have told investigators that the IS group was keen to recruit in Germany and the UK to boost its ability to carry out attacks in those countries.

"Their networks in these countries are not as close to criminal networks or as substantial as in francophone countries such as France and Belgium," he says.

"Most Muslims in Germany are of Turkish origin and while there are Turkish jihadists present, it is more of an Arab story and has deeper roots in France and Belgium."

Are the German authorities ready?

The country has different police and intelligence agencies for each region as well as federal agencies and this bureaucratic layering could allow plots to "slip through" if intelligence is not shared effectively, Mr Pantucci says.

Image copyright AFP/getty Image caption IS has said it wants to target Germany and claimed the Wuerzburg attacker acted for the group

A review of French intelligence has already found that attacks there could have been prevented if different forces and agencies had communicated with one another.

Efforts to disrupt plots could also be hobbled because of German legislation preventing agencies from eavesdropping on citizens in the same way as their counterparts in the UK and US routinely do, Mr Pantucci says.

The German government is currently attempting to broaden the scope of the intelligence service, the Bundesnachrichtendienst, to collect data, but a proposed new law has not yet been passed.

Kristen Bell Sloth PSA Food Stamps - Refinery29

Melissa McCarthy & Kristen Bell Answer The Web’s Most Searched Questions | WIRED
Kristen Bell has never been shy about her love of sloths. Remember, her sloth meltdown on Ellen? But, now Bell"s using her obsession with the slow-moving mammals for a good cause.

As E! reported, Bell put out a PSA with Thrive Market, an online grocery store, to promote a petition that would allow food stamps to be used online.

In it, Bell attempts to buy a Pygmy three-toed sloth "you know...that good shiz" off the internet, played here by an adorable little girl.

Turns out, it doesn"t take too much for Bell to get one. All she needs is an address and a credit card. That"s it.

Bell wants you to see the irony in that, explaining mock angrily, "Even the biggest sloth lover in the world me knows you can"t keep a perfect, exotic, endangered animal as a pet. Despite how badly I want one."

And she wants one real bad, but not as bad as she wants you to sign this petition to make it as easy for food stamps recipients to get groceries via the world wide web.

The video stresses that point even further with its final message: "You can buy anything online, even a sloth...But you can"t buy healthy food using food stamps."

You can go here to sign the petition.

But, definitely make sure and watch this video to the very end. If you do, you"ll get to see Bell"s adorable sloth impression, which is honestly too cute for words.

As cute as her recently released wedding photos no lie, it"s that cute.

Deputies Break Up Burglary Ring With SCV Victims

Sand Fire - Santa Clarita - July 23rd Update 1pm
Four suspects are sought in a series of residential burglaries, Sheriffs officials said Monday, while repeating a frequent warning to potential victims lock your doors, close your garages and makes sure your house doesnt have basic vulnerabilities, like open windows, when no one is home.Dont miss a thing. Get breakingKHTS Santa Clarita News Alertsdelivered right to your inbox.

The four individuals still wanted by the Sheriffs Department Major Crimes Bureau Robbery/Burglary Task Force are: Anthony Souice, 32; Joshua Johnson, 26; Alexus Netterville, 20; and Eric Netterville, 19.

Sheriffs Headquarters Bureau officials declinedto release the booking photos for the four outstanding suspects Monday, and declined to give a reason.

There are four outstanding suspects related to the current investigation, said Sgt. Mike Maher of the Robbery/Burglary Task Force. We as a Sheriffs Department, are always active in investigating additional burglary crews.

Santa Clarita Valley residents need to be especially careful about locking up their homes and valuables, he added, because the SCV is part of a region known as the 210-corridor, because of the eponymous interstate.

We tend to think of the 210 corridor as stretching from the Santa Clarita Valley out east toward the San Bernardino County line, he said. That (corridor) tends to be a target-rich area.

Not quite affluent, the so-called upper-middle class, middle class and working class neighborhoods along this area are frequently targeted because thieves assume theres a much greater chance someone will be away at work during the day, Maher said, adding hes very familiar with the Santa Clarita Valley area.

People are sometimes afraid to be a little paranoid and they should be a little paranoid, he said. Its not a black-white-Hispanic thing, its about seeing someone you dont know in your neighborhood.

To that end, Sheriffs Department officials are encouraging Los Angeles County residents to get to know their neighbors, at least digitally, online, through a social media program known as NextDoor.

The department is encouraging residents to sign up for the program, which verifies users addresses, so the people communicating are able to sign up by an actual geographic neighborhood. The network doesnt allow LASD officials to view neighbors posts to each other, but it does allow Sheriffs Station officials to communicate with a specific neighborhood, which is helpful in getting the word out if there is an emergency incident, or a specific rash of crimes that officials want to alert residents about,Sheriffs Department officials have said.

(Click here to sign up for NextDoor.)

Six members of the ring have already had their cases heard in court, and three of the suspects were directly linked to a pair of Santa Clarita Valley burglaries.

In May 2015, task force investigators arrested Leandrenae Cooke, Ashley Tate and Tazjanay Herndon who were suspects in two Santa Clarita Valley residential burglaries and two San Marino residential burglaries. All four were prosecuted and convicted in late 2015. Cooke pled guilty and was sentenced, receiving two strikes, and hes currently serving a two-year prison sentence.

Herndon pled guilty and was sentenced to one year in county jail with a felony strike, and is currently out of custody on felony probation. Tate pled guilty and was sentenced to nine years in state prison, due to a second felony strike.

In addition to the above seven individuals, four others have been sentenced as part of the theft ring, and six others are expected to be prosecuted shortly.

The following information was released via Nixle, an information alert system used by government agencies to send information.

On May 5, 2016, detectives from the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Departments Major Crimes Bureau, Burglary-Robbery Task Force, filed a 24-count, 10-defendant, residential burglary series case with the Los Angeles County District Attorneys Office, High Tech Crimes Division.

This criminal complaint alleged the suspects committed residential burglaries throughout Los Angeles County and surrounding areas as well as, felons possessing firearms, and felony evading of police. The complaint further alleged these crimes were committed by active criminal street gang members for the purpose of benefiting their gang.

In March 2015, the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Departments Major Crimes Bureau, Burglary-Robbery Task Force (BRTF) began an investigation into a large scale sophisticated residential burglary crew, comprised of suspected South Los Angeles gang members.

The initial residential burglary occurred in early March 2015, in Claremont, where Claremont Police Detectives determined suspects were making phone calls into homes prior to committing the burglary. Claremont Police detectives continued this investigation and shared the information with the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Departments Major Crimes Bureaus Burglary-Robbery Task Force.

In the proceeding months, LASD BRTF investigators determined the Claremont burglary was part of a well-organized southern California residential burglary crew, comprised of Los Angeles area gang members. BRTF investigators worked closely with Sheriff Detectives from Crescenta Valley Station, Los Angeles County Sheriffs Crime Analysts, Simi Valley Police Detectives, and ultimately Los Angeles County District Attorneys Office, High Tech Crimes Division, and identified the suspects. Investigators determined all suspects were operating as part of this significant burglary ring.

In June 2105, LASD BRTF investigators along with Simi Valley PD, shared information regarding several recent residential burglaries and determined the same suspects were victimizing Simi Valley neighborhoods were also committing residential burglaries throughout Los Angeles County. Both agencies worked together in an effort to identify and arrest remaining active suspects involved in this burglary ring.

In September 2015, LASD BRTF investigators were actively conducting surveillance of three burglary suspects. Investigators witnessed the suspects commit and residential burglary in Sherman Oaks, and as detectives prepared to apprehend them, they observed them commit a second residential burglary in North Hollywood. After a brief vehicle pursuit and area containment with the assistance of LAPD, BRTF investigators arrested Rafiki Smith (who was armed with a handgun) and Derrick Smith. The third suspect was not apprehended. Rafiki Smith is currently in LA County custody awaiting preliminary hearing on multiple residential burglary and weapons violations, and based on his lengthy violent criminal history, will be facing life in prison. Derrick Smith is currently held in federal custody for weapons violations and is also awaiting preliminary hearing on multiple residential burglary violations.

In October 2015, LASD BRTF and Simi Valley PD witnessed three suspects commit a residential burglary in Simi Valley. The three suspects, Jason Hayes, Diamond Williams, and Vance Zelaya, were all arrested leaving the vicinity.

Hayes pled guilty to the burglary charge and is awaiting sentencing. Zelaya and Williams are out of custody on bond and awaiting preliminary hearing.

In November 2015, LASD BRTF investigators were conducting surveillance of vehicle occupied by suspected members of this burglary ring. Investigators observed three males commit a residential burglary in the hillside neighborhood of Pacific Palisades.

All three suspects were arrested leaving the vicinity and stolen property from the home was recovered. Rayshawn Marshall, Mark Hundley, and Michael Butler were all arrested for the burglary and are currently in LA County Jail awaiting preliminary hearing. Marshall is facing an additional eight counts of felony residential burglary. Hundley is facing an additional eight counts of felony residential burglary. Butler, who at the time of his arrest was out of custody on bond from a recent residential burglary arrest, is facing an additional two counts of felony residential burglary.

Following the above arrests, LASD BRTF investigators identified six additional suspects who were actively participated in this burglary ring: Montayo Jones, arrested and in custody held on $140,000 bail, and charged with two residential burglaries, Chivetta Overstreet, arrested and held without bail and charged with three residential burglaries, Anthony Souice, charged with two residential burglaries and currently being sought for apprehension. Joshua Johnson, charged with three residential burglaries and currently being sought for apprehension. Alexus Netterville, charged with five residential burglaries and currently being sought for apprehension. Eric Netterville, charged with three residential burglaries and currently being sought for apprehension.Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department Burglary-Robbery Task Force investigators believe this burglary crew is responsible for dozens, if not hundreds of residential burglaries throughout southern California.

They mainly travelled in expensive luxury vehicles and rental cars, generally knocking on a front door to determine if a resident was home. If no one answered, they would force entry through a rear door or window, ransack the home stealing cash, jewelry, weapons and other valuables.

Typically, the gold and jewelry would be sold all over Los Angeles at Cash for Gold businesses and p**n items at locals p**n shops.

This investigation is ongoing and future arrests are imminent.

Crawford vs Postol results: Oscar Valdez smashes Matias Rueda, wins first world title

Crawford vs postol. pelea completa

Steve Marcus/Getty Images

Oscar Valdez made mincemeat of Matias Rueda to claim the vacant WBO featherweight title.

In his 20th professional fight, Mexico"s Oscar Valdez claimed his first world title tonight, winning the vacant WBO featherweight built with a second round stoppage win over Argentina"s Matias Rueda, dropping his opponent twice on body shots.

Valdez (20-0, 18 KO) battered and bloodied Rueda (26-1, 23 KO) in the opening round, showing a clear class disparity between the two fighters, which was one of the two ways this could have gone. Rueda, who had never really been tested before getting this fight, was simply out of his depth against the very talented and aggressive Valdez, and in the second round, Valdez dropped him on a body shot, and finished him with another moments later. Referee Russell Mora waved the count for the TKO.

The 25-year-old Valdez still has a level or two to face in this division, levels he"s yet to fight at in his pro career, and those could tell us a different story. But for now, he does have claim to one quarter of the recognized featherweight championship of the world, and all he"s done is fight his best, and his best has been a lot of fun to watch so far.

Debbie Wasserman Schultz not presiding over Democratic convention

WikiLeaks DNC Emails Forcing Debbie Wasserman Schultz to Resign. Clinton Only 1.9 Above Donald Trump
FILE - In this Jn. 24, 2015 file photo, Democratic National Committee Chairwoman, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla. speaks during a news conference in Des Moines, Iowa. The Democratic National Committee barely has more cash than it does IOUs, and it is being outraised month after month by its Republican counterpart. Its $24 million debt from the 2012 presidential election, only recently paid down, has squeezed investments in the next White House race. Underdeveloped party resources such as voter data files could become a serious disadvantage for the eventual nominee, particularly if that person is not front-runner Hillary Rodham Clinton, who would enter a general election contest with her own outreach network. (AP Photo/Charlie Neibergall, File)

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Debbie Wasserman Schultz is resigning under pressure as Democratic Party chairwoman, a stunning leadership shakeup as party officials gather in Philadelphia to nominate Hillary Clinton.

Wasserman Schultzs announcement Sunday follows a firestorm over hacked emails suggesting the Democratic National Committee favored Clinton during the primary, despite pledging neutrality. The leaked emails prompted primary runner-up Bernie Sanders to call for Wasserman Schultzs immediate resignation.

In a statement, Wasserman Schultz said she will step down at the end of the four-day convention. She said she plans to formally open and close the convention, as well as address delegates.

Her statement does not address the email controversy.

Wasserman Schultzs swift ouster underscores party leaders desire to avoid convention confrontations with Sanders loyal supporters. The chairwoman has been a lightning rod for criticism throughout the presidential campaign, with Sanders repeatedly accusing the DNC of backing Clinton.

Sanders said the 19,000 emails published by the website Wikileaks appeared to confirm his suspicions.

In one leaked email, a DNC official wondered whether Sanders religious beliefs could be used against him, questioning whether the candidate may be an atheist.

Sanders pressed for Wasserman Schultz to quit as chairwoman immediately. He also suggested that Clintons choice of running mate, Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine, was a disappointment and that he would have preferred Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, a favorite of liberals.

His political views are not my political views. He is more conservative than I am. Would I have preferred to see somebody like an Elizabeth Warren selected by Secretary Clinton? Yes, I would have, Sanders told NBCs Meet the Press.

The Clinton team worked to portray their partys convention in a different light from the just concluded Republican gathering in Cleveland, where Donald Trump accepted the GOP nomination but party divisions flared when his chief rival, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, refused to endorse the billionaire businessman.

Trump cast himself as the law-and-order candidate in a nation suffering under crime and hobbled by immigration, as the GOP convention stuck to a gloom-and-doom theme. Democrats said they wanted to convey a message of optimism and improving the lives of all Americans.

But party disunity also seems to be a factor in Philadelphia, given Sanders demands for a new leader and general unhappiness among his many supporters about how the nomination process unfolded.

Norman Solomon, a delegate who supports Bernie Sanders, says there is talk among Sanders delegates of walking out during Kaines acceptance speech or turning their backs as a show of protest.

Solomon said he believes a vast majority of Sanders delegates support these kinds of protests to express their dismay. Sanders supporters say they are concerned that Kaine is not progressive enough.

Dan ONeal, 68, is a retired school teacher and delegate from Arizona, said Wasserman Schultz has to be censured.

We knew they were stacking the deck against Bernie from the get-go, but this type of stuff coming out is outrageous, he said. It proves our point that theyve tried to marginalize him and make it as difficult as possible.

Trumps campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, agreed, saying Sanders supporters have a lot to complain about.

The emails have proven the system was rigged from the start, Manafort told Fox News Sunday.

Clintons campaign manager, Robby Mook, tried to shift blame away from DNC officials to Russian state actors who, he said, may have hacked into DNC computers for the purpose of helping Donald Trump, the Republican presidential nominee.

How the emails were stolen hasnt been confirmed.

It was concerning last week that Donald Trump changed the Republican platform to become what some experts would regard as pro-Russian, Mook said.

Clinton is within just days of her long-held ambition to become the partys official presidential nominee.

After the DNC released a slightly trimmed list of superdelegates those are the party officials who can back any candidate it now takes 2,382 delegates to formally clinch the nomination. Clinton has 2,814 when including superdelegates, according to an Associated Press count. Sanders has 1,893.

Sanders has endorsed Clinton, but his delegates are pushing for a state-by-state tally. The state-by-state roll call is scheduled for Tuesday.

Also Sunday, Kaine and his wife, Anne Holton, were back at their longtime church in Richmond, Virginia, a day after he made his campaign debut with Clinton.

Kaine, a former choir member at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, sang a solo during Communion. He later told reporters outside the church: We needed some prayers today and we got some prayers, and we got some support and it really feels good.
