An Erev Yom Kippur Letter Asking You to Stay Married

A documentary film about Yom Kippur War 1973

Holidays are a tense time. I have spent many counseling sessions over the years working with couples on issues relating to preparing for an upcoming holiday or recovering from the aftermath of a disastrous holiday. Besides all of the preparation that goes into the holiday which we can get stressed out about, there are issues of family dynamics involving in-laws and children. Whose house are we going to this year? Who is coming to us? Although we can often find ways to avoid interaction as a family, holidays almost force us to be together for an extended period of time. It may mean kids being home from school, changes in our routine, etc... For many of us this can be uncomfortable. Sometimes our anticipation of the holiday can create additional stress.

The holiday can serve as a turning point for a relationship. Unfortunately, we received a few contacts recently from readers whose spouses have decided to leave them after the holidays. To leave before or during the holiday would be too difficult on the family but once the holiday is over, it is an opportune time to move on, or so they say. I can only imagine what such a family could be going through at this time. How can they enjoy their holiday knowing it is the last one they will all share together? What will their future experiences of this holiday be when they will forever be reminded that this is the last holiday before their spouse or parent left? Impulsive decisions about relationships are never advisable unless your life is in danger.

Unfortunately, many people give up hope on their relationship. They don"t think there is any way to fix it, even if they have never sought professional help before. There are people now facing the decision whether or not to leave in order to not lose out on a potential lease and in order to not lose this sought out residence, they"re choosing to leave their marriage rather than lose the apartment. It"s sad that the possibility of losing the perfect living quarters is more important than losing out on the perfect partner. What is an impulsive decision? When our brains are under stress, we are not capable of accessing the logic part of our brain so to make a decision out of survival mode, unless you are in physical danger in the relationship, is not a wise choice and has ramifications that will last a lifetime.

Furthermore, many people think that marriages don"t require work to make them successful and are contemplating leaving without attempting to get professional assistance. And even if they have gone to someone and it hasn"t worked, they"re ready to give up. If you had a life threatening illness and one doctor gave you a death sentence, would you not seek a second opinion? No doubt you"d do anything you could to stay alive.

Why is it that we don"t put the same effort into saving a marriage which not only affects your life, it affects the life of your spouse, children, and their children. Is it because you think it is your spouse"s fault? That he/she will never change?

G-d believes we can change even though every Yom Kippur we stand before Him pretty much the same as the year before so why can"t we hold the hope for our spouse?

Our challenge to you this holiday season is to put rash decisions like leaving your marriage on hold.Shelve it until after the holidays are over. Let"s talk then.

Wishing you a happy and healthy New Year full of new possibilities for your relationship,

Shlomo Slatkin

Ryan Reynoldss Backstabbing Best Friend and the Saddest Celebrity Betrayals

Ryan Reynolds - Deadpool, Relationships, Billionaires, etc - #SRShow

Ryan Reynolds says a close friend tried profiting off his private family photos. Drew Barrymore, Amanda Bynes and many more famous faces feel his pain.

Being famous comes with its fair share of perksweve all seen MTVs Cribs. But when the professionally good-looking arent getting at-home blowouts, enjoying the best restaurants in the world, or whimsically naming their kids after various foodstuffs, theyre making painstaking efforts to protect their privacy. While fame is super fun when you"re trying to sell a warehouse full of waist-trainers or pass a how-to guide to push-up bras off as original content, it becomes a bit of a drag when the nosy public tries to gain access to every aspect of your personal life.

In his October GQ cover story, symmetrical face-haver Ryan Reynolds shared his firsthand account of a traumatically invasive incident. According to Reynolds, he was shocked to discover that one of his closest friends, someone he grew up with, was shopping around a private photo of him, his wife Blake Lively, and their newborn daughter, James. It didn"t take long for Reynolds to track down the culprit, since he says he only shared the image with his closest family and [his] closest friends. The actor told GQ that the experience was one of those devastating things to find out and likened the betrayal to a death.

Unfortunately, this type of money-hungry treachery is fairly common in the world of celebrity friendships. Whether its a fellow star, a non-famous friend, or even a parent or family member, theres always someone looking to make a buck off the inside scoop.

In 2014, a leaked Lindsay Lohan s*x list revealed 36 of the stars alleged conquests. The hand-written account, which named Hollywood hunks like James Franco, Justin Timberlake, and Zac Efron, naturally became tabloid fodder. But the insanely private all-access pass to Lohans s*x life was never supposed to go viral. On the finale of her OWN docu-series, the actress admitted that she wrote a sexual inventory during her time in rehab at the Betty Ford Center, citing it as part of her 12 steps for Alcoholics Anonymous. That was in my Betty Ford book, so that was really personal to my sponsor, she insisted.

Lohan believes that the list was leaked by one of two people who helped her move out of the Beverly Hills Hotel, saying, Pretty sure I know who it is, unfortunately...They"re not a part of my life at all anymore. Reflecting on the betrayal, the star explained, The fact that that happened was not only humiliating, but just mean. It was mean-spirited for someone to do thatThat is a desperate human being and I hope they find some peace. Because anyone thats willing to do that to someone else is really f--ked up in the head. And I don"t want that in my life.

British songstress Leona Lewis feels Lindsays pain. In 2012, Lewis told The Daily Mail that Ive been let down really badly by a couple of friends in recent years who I thought were genuine but I then found out were selling stories about me, which was devastating. They betrayed me and that just makes them evil.

An even more concerning trend involves celebrities who are obviously in a position of vulnerability, and the blood-sucking parasites harvesting their breakdown pain for tabloid profits. During the long national nightmare that was Amanda Byness public breakdown, a recording of the former child star threatening to murder her father started making the Internet rounds. In a statement released by Byness attorney, the troubled starlet apologized. Im sorry I trusted people who clearly were not my friends and capitalized on my illness...I never expected others to take advantage and profit from my condition, she said. Im disappointed with those who lulled me into a false sense of security only to find out they really are only interested in selling my privacy to the media.

Kim Kardashian similarly accused non-famous KUTWK cast member and best friend Jonathan Cheban of selling her out. In a 2014 episode of Kourtney and Khloe Take the Hamptons, Kardashian surmised that the former publicist leaked a story about Kourtneys therapy. It was a strangely confident accusation coming from Kim, who was reportedly the number one source for all things juicy and gossip-related when it came to dishing dirt on former BFF Paris Hilton. (Before she was Kim Kardashian West, Kim was a lowly Hilton handmaiden with a chip on her shoulder and a direct line to TMZ. It just goes to prove the age-old adage: keep your friends close, and your closet-organizers closer.)

But while celeb-on-celeb sabotage is no laughing matter, theres no source of betrayal more upsetting than a parent. Just ask Katy Perry or Jennifer Aniston; both stars have mothers who have profited off family stories and salacious gossip. Nancy Anistons book, From Mother to Daughter to Friends, told the story of her tense relationship with her movie-star daughter. Mary Hudson, Katy Perrys mother, is reportedly trying to pull off a similar stunt, shopping around a memoir about her once-Christian daughters fall from grace.

In a 2011 Vogue interview, Rihanna told a cautionary tale about celebrity parenthood, recalling how her father sold childhood photos to a tabloid. The pop star warned, You hear the horror stories about people going behind peoples backs and doing strange things, but you always think, not my family. My father would never do that to me. Rounding out this squad of parental failures is Drew Barrymores mother, Jaid Barrymore, who went so far as peddling her famous daughters baby clothes on eBay. No wonder Drew appealed for legal emancipation at the tender age of 15.

Whether its a baby picture, a privileged confession, or even a s*x list, tabloid betrayals reveal just how hard it is for celebrities to find someone to trust, whether its a childhood friend, a fellow star, or even dear old mom and dad. Maybe Kanyes complaints about how difficult it is to be famous werent so off the mark after all.

The New Minority Report TV Show and the Dangers of Out-of-Date Futurism

Interview with the Cast of TV"s Minority Report - IGN Live: Comic-Con 2015
Minority Report on Fox is set in 2065.

Screenshot via Fox.

During the publicity tour for the new Fox TV series Minority Report, executive producer Kevin Falls has pointed out that it is the first Steven Spielbergdirected movie to be adapted for TV. So ... no pressure, he concludes. While his premise is not entirely true (hes forgotten The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles), he is right to stand by his conclusion because he will likely feel pressure of many other forms. Most especially, because the show promises to deliver a large component of high tech in the near future. Such a promise is difficult to keep in an age when, to paraphrase whoever actually said the quote attributed to Yogi Berra, the near future aint what it used to be. The original film (made in 2002 and set in 2054) is already showing signs of what Douglas Adams and John Lloyd called zeerusta form of out-of-date futurism. The TV shows producers need to beware.

For the noisy lot of us born during the baby boom, there is a growing nostalgia for the future of our youth. By future of our youth I dont mean optimism about what we ourselves might have been. Weve long given up on that. I mean what we thought the future would be like when we were youngsters. For many of us, we thought the future would mean The Jetsons living in Walt Disneys Tomorrowland (the theme park attraction, not the movie), with all the tailfins, ray-gun gothic aesthetic, and Googie architecture you could cram into a New York Worlds Fair. Our parents may have lamented about surviving world wars and a Great Depression while our kids continually grouse about facing imminent climate change and acute economic inequality. But wheres the justice of living in a world in which we havent gotten our jet packs?!

Fond remembrances of futures past have been around ever since H.G. Wells Things to Come didnt come.

Fond remembrances of futures past have been around ever since the 1936 big-screen adaptation of H.G. Wells Things to Come didnt come. Its probably for the best that what happened in 1984 didnt happen in 1984 (except the legendary Super Bowl Apple commercial). But there was a burst of future nostalgia when the prophesies of 2001: A Space Odyssey proved to be nonprophetic. As it turns out, the failure of Pan Am and Howard Johnson to offer deep-space hospitality (or of the former to even exist) by 2001 had already been diffused by the abrogation of the Apollo program decades prior; the mild attention in nerd culture to Hal 9000s birth four years earlier; and the sobering gut punch of Sept. 11, which returned our focus to the present. Ten years later (April 21, 2011, to be exact) we blew past the oft-delayed Judgment Day from the Terminator movies only to be told in Terminator: Genisys that itll be back in a few more years. Most recently, a lot of digital ink has been spilled deciding whether the 2015 of Back to the Future II was an accurate or mistaken foreshadowing of the 2015 of 2015, but generally speaking the predictive abilities of the fictional world of tomorrow have been relegated to the trash heap of yesteryear.

The future yet to come doesnt look too bright either. After the next Terminator-led Judgment Day in 2017, the bleak events of Blade Runner unfold in 2019, just in time for the Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Soylent Green is on the menu for 2022, the grim city of the future that is Metropolis takes place in 2026, the global infertility of Children of Men will be borne out in 2027, Robocop reports for duty in 2029, Snowpiercer arrives at its dire destination in 2031, and I, Robot boots up in 2035. Good luck to anyone who lives long enough to see Woody Allen reawaken in Sleeper circa 2173, because the best he or she can hope for in the meantime is the 30-year midcentury whiplash of Looper, the did-it-or-didnt-it-happen happenings of Total Recall, and the mildly awkward, high-waisted couture of Her. Good times (to come).

Ky. Speedway expects same NASCAR date in 2016

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series - Full Race - Federated Auto Parts 400 at Richmond

If there are major shakeups to next year"s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series schedule, a shift in date for the Kentucky Speedway won"t likely be among them.

Officials at the Sparta, Ky., track anticipate the Quaker State 400 again running in 2016 on the second Saturday night in July, one week after NASCAR"s stop at Daytona.

"We are expecting to be on the same weekend next year," Kentucky Speedway"s general manager, Mark Simendinger, said Monday. "I"d be very surprised if we aren"t. Nothing"s official until it"s official, but that"s what we"re all planning on."

NASCAR has taken longer this year to release the upcoming slate. By the end of August 2014, the 2015 schedule was out.

It was then that the series announced a shift in date for the Quaker State 400 from late June to mid-July, same as where the race positioned for its inaugural running in 2011. Kyle Busch, who won the first Cup Series race at Kentucky Speedway, also won this summer in a race remembered for NASCAR"s rules experimentation.

Lower downforce and softer tires induced more passing, plus a back-and-forth battle between Joey Logano and Busch in the final 20 laps.

"I don"t think there"s a whole lot of debate so far that the best race of the year was right here at Kentucky in July," Simendinger said. "Now I know how Donald Trump feels. They"re talking aboutme when I"m not around. They"re getting out of the cars (at other tracks) and saying, "Why can"t we set up the cars like at Kentucky?""

The speedway"s current date is also of major importance on the schedule, with the Quaker State 400 the final 1.5-mile track run before the Chase for the Sprint Cup. NASCAR"s playoffs include stops at four similarly shaped ovals in the final 10 weeks.

The second-tier Xfinity Series returns to Kentucky Speedway this Saturday for the VisitMyrtleBeach.com 300, a race preceded by Friday"s ARCA Racing Series event in Sparta.

Howards secret divorce came to light this summer during a court case surrounding his second ex-wife, Michelle Ghent, whom he was married to from 2010 to 2013. In the case, it was revealed that the Fox star and Pak had been living separately since August 2014, and that the pair officially started divorce proceedings in March. They share 4-month-old son, Qirin Love. His first wife was Lori McCommas, whom he split from in 2003 and remarried in 2005. They divorced a second time in 2007.
