INTEGRIS Game Day Report: Thunder vs. Golden State Warriors Game 3 May 22, 2016

Oklahoma City Thunder vs Golden State Warriors - Game 2 - 1st Half Highlights | 2016 NBA Playoffs

In the early morning hours of Thursday morning, as the Thunders team plane was crossing the Rocky Mountains on its way back from Oakland to Oklahoma City, Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, Billy Donovan and the rest of their teammates and coaches were watching film from Games 1 and 2 against the Golden State Warriors. In these Western Conference Finals, theres no time to waste in preparing for the next game.

Sunday nights Game 3 will be a pivotal one, as they all are, as the Thunder and the Warriors go toe-to-toe in a 1-1 series to try to advance to the NBA Finals. Led by Durant and Westbrook, the Thunder has assessed where it can improve from Game 2, how it can limit turnovers, prevent second chance points and execute at a higher level.

That"s the one thing that makes those two guys so special is because they have a strong willingness and eagerness to want to improve and get better, Donovan explained. It could be in any area. They"re just looking to grow and get better.

One of the areas the Thunder wants to do a better job of defensively in Game 3 is limit the Warriors open three-point attempts, both in transition and in the half court. On a few occasions in Game 2, Golden State forwards were able to get Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson open on pin-down screens along the wing by both screening Curry and Thompsons defenders, but at other times by screening their own defenders when they anticipated the Thunder would switch. As a result, the Thunder has to be unpredictable in its defensive coverages so that the Warriors dont know exactly whats coming, or who to screen.

We"ve got to mix-up coverage and do some different things, Donovan said. Curry and Klay Thompson, they"ve been guarded every possible way imagined, and they"ve seen a lot of different things. So a lot of times in those situations you"re talking about where there are switches or slips or there"s not a screen, there is a screen, it really takes a high level of communication, whatever you"re doing, whether you"re staying with your man or you are switching. But we"ve got to change covers up as best we can, and in order to change coverages you"ve got to communicate.

Beyond the xs and os, however, the Thunders main objective heading into Game 3 is just to do everything at a higher level, with more energy and more concentrated effort. At this stage of the postseason, everyone is playing as hard as they can, leaving everything on the floor. The key is harnessing the energy in the right way and devoting that effort in the ways that lead to victory. That part is much more difficult than simply playing harder, its about playing with a corralled tenacity and concentrated will.

They made those plays, and in Game 1, I thought we did a better job, Donovan said. They did a great job raising their level of play, and you"ve got to give them credit.

We can watch the film, and we can say oh, we need to switch this one, we need to change this one, Serge Ibaka added. But the reality is they were playing tougher than us. They were tougher, they were more aggressive than us. That"s something you can"t always watch on film and can"t always change. It"s mentally. I think it"s something we have to do next game.

Every possession matters in these NBA Playoffs, as the Thunder saw in a hard-fought victory in Oakland in Game 1, when down the stretch it executed better than the Warriors. In Game 2, Donovans club let go of the reins for a minute span at the end of the first half, and it turned the tide of the game completely.

That focus and determination to be on point for every possession can make up for a lot of mistakes, difficult shots hit by opponents and tough luck. The key for the Thunder, as leaders like Westbrook described, is to stay vigilant and pull the team out of a bad rhythm before consecutive such possessions pile up.

Once we play harder, everything else will go into place. I think that"s the most important part, Westbrook said. Offensive rebounds, extra possessions, stuff like that just shows they wanted it more than us. We can"t let that happen.

You try to find ways to help each other out, help yourself out, find ways to not let the guy in front of you beat you to the ball, box out, do things that can change the game, Westbrook added.

Troy Brouwer, Kyle Brodziak help St. Louis Blues even series

NHL Rivals: Chicago Blackhawks - St Louis Blues

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Troy Brouwer has proven to be a good closer in the 2016 NHL playoffs.

The St. Louis Blues needed a starter Saturday night, and their right wing did that expertly as well.

Brouwer and center Kyle Brodziak scored two goals apiece, powering the Blues to a 6-3 victory over the San Jose Sharks, evening the best-of-seven Western Conference finals at two games apiece.

Goalie Jake Allen, making his first start of the postseason, turned away 31 of San Jose"s 34 shots, sending the series back to St. Louis on even terms for Game 5 on Monday.

"We came here to win a hockey game, and we did," Blues coach Ken Hitchcock said of the aftermath of losing the home-ice advantage by virtue of splitting the first two games in St. Louis. "Now we"re taking it back to our fans."

Brouwer, the hero of Game 7 wins over Chicago and Dallas that propelled the Blues into the Western finals, ended Sharks goalie Martin Jones" two-game shutout streak with a one-timer from in front of the net just 6:14 into the game.

He came back to add the clincher at the 3:55 mark of the third period, deflecting a shot from the point by Alexander Steen past James Reimer, who had replaced Jones in the second period.

"Brouwer keeps showing up in big games for us," observed Blues defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk. "That"s comforting."

The power-play goal, which came just seven seconds after Sharks winger Joel Ward had gotten called for delay of game, gave St. Louis a 5-1 lead.

"We got back to the way we wanted to play -- get the puck deep, make their defensemen work," said Brouwer, whose goals were his sixth and seventh of the postseason. "We did a good job of taking advantage of our opportunities."

Allen easily converted the four-goal lead into a victory from there, although he came under constant assault from a desperate Sharks team in the final period.

San Jose scored three times in the third period, first on a Joe Pavelski tip-in of a Joe Thornton shot just 1:05 in, and not too long later when Chris Tierney"s shot from the right side bounced in off the back of Allen.

Tierney"s goal, his fourth of the playoffs, was unassisted and got San Jose back within 5-2 with still 13:03 to play.

But Allen held on from there, despite surrendering a goal with 3:32 remaining that was credited to San Jose"s Melker Karlsson but was actually pushed into the net by St. Louis defenseman Joel Edmundson.

"I was confident. I"ve been ready," assured Allen, who hadn"t started a game in the postseason.

Karlsson"s goal made the final 6-3, with the Blues having scored an empty-netter 49 seconds earlier on an Alex Pietrangelo shot that went three-quarters the length of the ice.

"He brings a lot of fire. He"s a competitive son of a gun," Hitchcock said of Allen. "We played with more passion in front of him because I made the change."

Both of Brodziak"s goals, his first and second of the playoffs, came in the second period, during which St. Louis went ahead 4-0.

The back-breaker for the Sharks occurred early in the second period, after they had staved off a five-on-three disadvantage while already trailing 2-0.

An interference penalty on Shattenkirk handed San Jose a golden opportunity to get back in the game. But sloppy play killed the Sharks.

The Blues not only held San Jose without a shot for the first 1:58 of the penalty kill, but also used Sharks turnovers to create a pair of two-on-one short-handed opportunities.

San Jose"s Logan Couture stopped the first run when he blocked a shot by Steen, but there was no denying Brodziak on the second after he took a nifty pass from Jaden Schwartz and blasted it over Jones" right shoulder for a 3-0 lead at the 6:09 mark.

"We didn"t execute," sized up Sharks coach Peter DeBoer. "We got what we deserved."

Just 3:40 after Brodziak"s first goal of the playoffs, it was a blowout, with the center going upper deck again, this time over Jones" left shoulder to make it a four-goal game.

"It definitely feels good to pitch in," he said. "As a group, we weren"t happy with the way the last two games went. We wanted to get pucks deep and go to work. We stuck with it and got rewarded."

Down 4-0, DeBoer pulled Jones, who had faced 19 shots. He was replaced by Reimer, who hadn"t seen any action in San Jose"s first 14 playoff games.

Afterward, DeBoer insisted he expected Jones -- as well as the rest of his team -- to bounce back strong in Game 5.

"We"ve had one or two of these games in the playoffs and we"ve always responded the right way," he said. "We have a real honest group. They know what they have to do."

Allen got tested early, starting with shots by Paul Martin and Pavelski in the first two minutes.

He saved both easily, then got his first serious test when Joonas Donskoi fired from point-blank range in the game"s fifth minute. Again, Allen was up to the task.

A tripping penalty on Sharks defenseman Brent Burns turned the momentum of the period in the Blues" favor at the 5:00 mark.

Brouwer"s first goal came 74 seconds later.

NOTES: The Blues are now 2-0 in the postseason when they"ve fallen behind in a series. They lost the opener of the Western semifinals to Dallas before responding with two wins. ... Despite the impressive win, Blues coach Ken Hitchcock would not commit to G Jake Allen as his Game 5 starter. ... Sharks G Martin Jones had his shutout streak ended at 153 minutes, 57 seconds. ... Backup Sharks G James Reimer faced eight shots and saved seven of them.

Blue moon, bright Mars shine this weekend, but likely behind clouds

Blue Moon - Chris Isaak

If the rain clouds part, you can see a blue moon and the planet Mars at its brightest this weekend.

The full moon arrives at 5:14 p.m. Saturday, though it won"t rise until 8:07 p.m. in Baltimore. Typically, May"s full moon isknown as the Flower Moon, Corn Planting Moon or Milk Moon, according to the Farmer"s Almanac.

It is also a blue moon because it is the third of four full moons to occur this spring. Most seasons have just three full moons. The first this spring occurred just after the vernal equinox March 23, and the last occurs hours before the summer solstice on June 20.

That doesn"t mean it will appear blue, or that it will be any bigger or brighter than it otherwise would.

It will have a bright companion, though. Mars will be at its brightest since 2003 because it will be unusually close to Earth at the same time it reaches what is known as opposition, when its face is fully illuminated by the sun.

The last time such a coincidence occurred was Aug. 28, 2003, and the next isn"t until July 27, 2018, according to EarthSky.org.

Unfortunately, it could be difficult to spot both. If the clouds part Saturday night, with rain expected through the evening, you can spot the moon and Mars side by side moving across the southern half of the sky.

Mostly cloudy skies are also forecast Sunday evening, though they are expected to clear through the night. On Sunday night, Saturn will be the bright planet right next to the moon, with bright Mars a little farther away.

Wilbur! Alan Young, star of 1960s sitcom "Mr. Ed," dies at 96 (w/video)

Mickey"s Hearth"s Warming Tail (Alan Young Tribute)

LOS ANGELES (AP) >> Actor-comedian Alan Young, who played the amiable straight man to a talking horse in the 1960s sitcom Mister Ed, has died, a spokeswoman for the Motion Picture and Television Home said Friday. He was 96.

The English-born, Canadian-educated Young died Thursday, according to Jaime Larkin, spokeswoman for the retirement community where Young had lived for four years. His children were with him when he died peacefully of natural causes, she said.

Young was already a well-known radio and TV comedian, having starred in his own Emmy-winning variety show, when Mister Ed was being readied at comedian George Burns production company. Burns is said to have told his staff: Get Alan Young. He looks like the kind of guy a horse would talk to.

Mr. Ed was a golden Palomino who spoke only to his owner, Wilbur Post, played by Young. Fans enjoyed the horses deep, droll voice (WIL-bur-r-r-r-r) and the goofy theme song lyrics (A horse is a horse, of course, of course ... ). Cowboy star Allan Rocky Lane supplied Mr. Eds voice.

An eclectic group of celebrities including Clint Eastwood, Mae West and baseball great Sandy Koufax made guest appearances on the show.

Mister Ed was one of a number of situation comedies during the early to mid-60s that added elements of fantasy. Others were My Mother the Car, in which a mans dead mother spoke to him through an old car; My Favorite Martian in which a Martian took up residence on Earth disguised as the uncle of an earthling; and Bewitched in which a witch married a mortal.

A loose variation on the Francis the Talking Mule movies of the 1950s, Mister Ed was one of the few network series to begin in syndication. After six months, it moved to ABC in October 1961 and lasted four seasons.

When the cameras werent rolling, the human and four-legged co-stars were friends, according to Young. If Ed was reprimanded by his trainer, Young said, He would come over to me, like, Look what he said to me.

Like many series of its vintage, Mister Ed won new fans in later decades through near-constant cable TV syndication and video releases.

Young also appeared in a number of films, including Gentlemen Marry Brunettes, Tom Thumb, The Cat from Outer Space and The Time Machine, the latter the 1960 classic in which, speaking in a Scottish brogue, he played time traveler Rod Taylors friend. Young had a small role in the 2002 Time Machine remake.

In later years, Young found a new career writing for and voicing cartoons. He portrayed Scrooge McDuck in 65 episodes for Disneys TV series Duck Tales and did voice-overs for The Great Mouse Detective.

Youngs sly, low-key style first attracted a wide U.S. audience in 1944 with The Alan Young Show on ABC radio. He also drew attention from Hollywood, but early films such as Margie and Mr. Belvedere Goes to College did poorly and in 1950 he turned to the growing new medium of TV and moved The Alan Young Show to the small screen, where it offered a contrast to the slapstick and old vaudeville of other variety shows.

His gentle comedy caused TV Guide to hail him as the Charlie Chaplin of television, and the fledgling Academy of Television Arts and Sciences awarded Emmys to Young as best actor and to the show as best variety series.

Howard Hughes, who had seen Young on TV, hired him for the lead in a film version of Androcles and the Lion, a comedy based on the George Bernard Shaw play. When it opened in theaters, however, nobody laughed, so Hughes withdrew the movie and shot two weeks of new sequences.

He put in girls with gauze and a real lion, and it became a blood-and-guts film, Young recalled in 1987.

Angus Young was born Nov. 19, 1919, of Scottish parents in the north England town of North Shields. (In his later years he claimed he was born in 1924.)

The family moved to Canada when he was a child, and he began entertaining in Vancouver when he was 13. He had his own radio program, Stag Party, on the CBC network by the time he graduated from high school. After two years in the Canadian navy, he moved to New York City.

Young was a Christian Scientist from his teen years. In the early 1970s, he left his career to work for the Mother Church in Boston. He spent three years establishing a film and broadcasting center, then toured the country for two years as a Christian Science lecturer. Disillusioned by the church bureaucracy, he returned to Hollywood in 1976.

In 1940, Young married Mary Anne Grimes and they had a daughter, Alana, and a son, Alan Jr. The marriage ended in 1947.

In 1948 he married singer Virginia McCurdy, and they had a son, Cameron Angus, and a daughter, Wendy.

There was no information on survivors.
