TNT deal raises FedEx employment to almost 400000

Minecraft - A TNT nem játék!!!

By Wayne Risher of The Commercial Appeal

Posted: Yesterday 11:30 a.m. 0

In one fell swoop, Memphis" biggest company ballooned to nearly 400,000 employees worldwide and close to $58 billion in annual revenues.

The jewel of FedEx"s acquisition of TNT Express this week is a European road network linking 40 countries, but the heart of FedEx remains in Memphis.

No immediate impact was foreseen on FedEx"s Memphis area workforce of more than 30,000, but the company"s continued growth as a force in world commerce would have a ripple effect here. FedEx is the area"s largest private employer.

TNT and FedEx, the Nos. 3 and 4 players in the $60 billion European express delivery market, on Wednesday consummated a $4.9 billion deal that had been brewing since early 2015.

The combination promises to make FedEx a bigger player in Europe by building on TNT"s road network and improving international connections. FedEx moves into position to eventually overtake No. 2 carrier United Parcel Service, behind Germany"s DHL, the dominant No. 1 in Europe.

FedEx also moved into a virtual dead heat with chief U.S. rival UPS in total revenues, although it still trails the Atlanta-based company"s workforce of 444,000. A decade ago, FedEx had two-thirds of UPS" annual revenues.

FedEx chief spokesman Patrick Fitzgerald discussed the integration, which is expected to take four years, and potential impact in Memphis. He acknowledged that in the short term, "I wouldn"t have anything to point to tangibly that people would see."

FedEx is moving European headquarters from Brussels, Belgium, into TNT"s home base in Hoofddorp, The Netherlands. FedEx Express is adding TNT"s airfreight hub in Liege, Belgium, to principal European hubs Paris-Charles De Gaulle and Cologne, Germany.

FedEx"s pattern in the past has been to leave newly acquired companies" headquarters where they are. FedEx Ground, which grew out of a 1998 purchase of Caliber System/Roadway Package Service, is based in Moon Township outside Pittsburgh. FedEx Office, rooted in the acquisition of Kinko"s in 2004, moved into a new world headquarters in Plano, Texas, last year.

FedEx declined to break down employee numbers in the Memphis area, including the FedEx Express World Headquarters on Hacks Cross, the hub at Memphis International Airport and FedEx World Technology Center in Collierville.

Memphis airport officials have pegged hub employment at "more than 11,000," and a 2015 FedEx report to Collierville said the tech center employed 2,709. FedEx Ground and FedEx Freight have service centers and sorting facilities.

Fitzgerald is senior vice president of integrated marketing and communications. His responses have been edited for brevity.

Commercial Appeal: Will a growing market share in Europe and other countries served by TNT feed more volume into the hub?

Fitzgerald: There"s significant potential for growth, which would affect all of our operations, and obviously the hub here in Memphis is at the heart of FedEx Express and FedEx Express operations. It should be very positive for all our employees.

CA: Will this acquisition have an impact on the big operations that are already here, the hub, world headquarters?

Fitzgerald: Our team members will certainly be aware of being on a larger team. We"re moving to approximately 400,000 team members around the world. It"s just the latest step in the evolution and growth of FedEx. We"re a growing, successful organization that continues to be very proud to be headquartered here in Memphis.

Just in terms of our success as a company and a growth engine or driving engine is the growth of e-commerce, which I think everybody feels in just day to day retail and business patterns. We play a key role in that, and the acquisition of TNT will help us continue to grow that. You may notice some things that way.

CA: How quickly will FedEx move to rebrand the combined operation?

Fitzgerald: The TNT brand is very strong, so it"s really something that we want to make sure we pursue in the most effective course for the brand and not lose any of the strength of either brand. The combined brand together will be stronger, but specific considerations, the vehicles and aircraft, country by country, that"s all going to be part of the integration process. It"s not to say we in any way want to diminish the strength of the TNT Brand.

We"ve done some significant acquisitions in the past and that includes Flying Tigers and RPS, FedEx Ground, Kinko"s and FedEx Office. We do have some experience in this and each one"s a bit different. In this case, because this is such a large international integration, we do have to consider country by country, so it may vary by territory in terms of brand transitions.

Kerr calls Iguodala unsung hero in Warriors Game 6 win

Andre Iguodala is always a calming influence for the Warriors.

In Saturday nights Game 6, he managed to completely fluster the Oklahoma City Thunder on their home court.

Iguodala channeled the 2015 NBA Finals MVP version of himself in the closing minutes of the Warriors 108-101 victory, a win that tied the Western Conference finals 3-3 and sent the series back to Oakland for Mondays Game 7.

I thought Andre Iguodala was kind of the unsung hero, Warriors head coach Steve Kerr said. Andre made some huge defensive plays down the stretch to give us a chance.

Iguodalas impact was all over the Warriors 9-0, game-closing run.

With 2:06 remaining, he swooped in for a nifty, left-handed layup that tied it 101-101. After stealing the ball from Russell Westbrook, Iguodala fired an outlet pass to Klay Thompson, who knocked down the go-ahead three-pointer with 1:35 left.

The teams traded back-to-back empty possessions, and then Iguodala came up with another steal. He got the ball to Stephen Curry for the game-clinching runner in the final 15 seconds.

Andre is one of the smartest, not only basketball players, but hes an incredibly smart human being, Kerr said. He sees everything kind of before it happens, and hes blessed with great speed, length and strength. Theres a reason hes been one of the leagues best defenders for a long time.

Hes really a key part every game for us, because we ask him to do so much.

Iguodala split his time defending Oklahoma Citys superstar scorers, Kevin Durant and Westbrook. The usually dynamic duo connected on only 34.5 percent of their 58 shots from the field and went 1-for-13 from three-point range.

Youve got to make these guys work, Iguodala said in a postgame TV interview. Kevin Durant, in my opinion, is one of the top two scorers in the world. Were in a league where the advantage is to the scorer, so hes going to make some tough shots, hes going to take a lot of shots, hes going to be comfortable all of the time and hes going to get to the foul line.

Youve just got to keep plugging away.

Playing 38 minutes, including starting in place of Harrison Barnes in the second half, Iguodala had eight points, seven rebounds and three steals.

In the games closing 126 seconds, he had two points, two steals and an assist.

Hes the best defensive player Ive ever played with and Ive ever seen, Thompson said.

Thats enough to make opponents panic.

Sherrington: In 1979, former UT and NE Pats star Clayborn found out in painful way that media can truly be hard hitting

Webb Simpson’s fabulous bunker hole out for birdie at DEAN & DELUCA

Raymond Clayborn made fast tracks out of Fort Worth Trimble Tech in 1973, then left his footprints all over Texas" record books.

Led the Longhorns to Southwest Conference track titles in 1976 and "77 and league football championships in "73 and "75.

All-American, two-time All-SWC and named to the SWC"s All-Decade team in football.

Clayborn was so fast and fearsome, the Patriots made him the 16th pick of the "77 draft, and with the exception of Tony Dorsett and maybe Stanley Morgan, no first-rounder that year had a better career.

Finished with 36 interceptions, tied for most in Patriots history. And Clayborn played in an era when passing was for the left lane only.

As terrific as he was as a defensive back and return man, though, a locker-room story stands out in the memories of most pro football fans from the "70s.

Among sportswriters from the era, it"s practically biblical.

On Sept. 9, 1979, after the Patriots had plastered the Jets 56-3 in Foxboro, Boston sportswriters crowded around the locker of receiver Harold Jackson, who"d caught three touchdown passes. The surplus spilled over into Clayborn"s locker, an intrusion he didn"t take lightly.

Clayborn had apparently been in a bad mood all week. Reportedly been in at least one fight in practice.

One media member objected to Clayborn"s manners. The Globe"s Will McDonough boasted a reputation as Boston"s most feared writer. And not just for his adjectives, either.

Growing up in Southie, he"d reportedly been chummy with mobster Whitey Bulger, subject of Black Mass. As one writer put it, not a few Boston sports figures respected McDonough because they"d heard he could get you a papal blessing or your legs broken. Probably in the same phone call.

Anyway, events escalated quickly. Depending on what you read, Clayborn tried to poke McDonough in the chest and found his eye instead.

McDonough -- an inch shorter and 20 years older -- delivered a right cross that even Rougie Odor would have envied, and Clayborn tumbled back into his locker. Goliath"s fall got less press.

The ensuing melee blurred most accounts, though it"s fairly certain Patriots owner Billy Sullivan ended up in a laundry bin.

McDonough"s son, Sean, who went on to a fine broadcasting career, said the incident gave him instant cachet. My dad can beat up your dad? Hey, my dad beat up an NFL player!

As for Clayborn, the NFL fined him $2,000. Apologized the next day, promising no more tantrums.

Proved as good as his word, too, though some in New England may still hold it against the Katy, Texas, resident. For the third year in a row, he finished runner-up in Patriots Hall of Fame voting. Still, it"s not as bad as losing to a sportswriter.

First clue about Art Briles" culpability was his reaction to Sam Ukwuachu"s rape conviction last August, second by one of his Baylor players in 19 months. Called it "unfortunate." Unfortunate? Wasn"t quite level of contrition or sympathy situation required. Reflected Briles" shocking indifference about safety of campus females, at least when his football players were involved. Let"s hope it"s wake-up call for coaches everywhere. ... Baylor now owns two of state"s biggest college athletics scandals ever, both in this century. Basketball murder/Dave Bliss cover-up of 2003 still too fresh in memory. ... Interesting reaction from Jeff Banister to reporter"s question about majesty of Nomar Mazara"s 491-foot homer, longest in MLB this season. Terse response seemed to suggest, "If we make too much fuss, kid starts swinging for Home Run Porch every time." Not much chance. Never saw player so young, so disciplined. Whoever came up with "Big Chill" as nickname nailed it. ... Return of Yu Darvish stretches out rotation, which was already solid. Bigger question: What happens when A.J. Griffin comes back? He"d worked his way into mix before flare-up. Who loses when he"s back? Martin Perez? Derek Holland? Colby Lewis? Prediction: Banister will go with hot hand. ... Ricky Williams running San Francisco"s pot-friendly Power Plant Fitness gym is like Henry Ford operating local car dealership. ... Dwight Freeney may be 36 but still registered eight sacks in 11 games for Arizona last year, and without offseason or training camp. Pass rush remains glaring need for Cowboys, but Stephen Jones says they"re not interested. At least not yet. If Freeney would take one-year deal, they should offer. ... Texas" Charlie Strong ahead of curve by firing DBs coach Chris Vaughn in February. Former Ole Miss assistant accused of multiple violations in NCAA allegations, including ACT fraud scheme. ... Fifth-grader Nihar Janga of Leander, outside Austin, ties for Scripps National Spelling Bee title, throws up "X" in tribute to Dez Bryant, who tweeted his approval. Nihar correctly spelled "gesellschaft," which, roughly translated, means two tickets to Cowboys game. ... Question: If trend of finding new positive results in previous Olympic test samples keeps up, is any generation safe? Hide your medals, folks. ... Best postseason news for Mavs fans? Going five with OKC was big deal after all.

New Zealand vs Australia: Steven Adams against Andrew Bogut with the Western Conference title on the line

Steven Adams Elbows Shaun Livingston in the Face | Thunder vs Warriors | Game 5 | 2016 NBA Playoffs

Last August, the FIBA Oceania Championships took place with a spot in this August"s Olympics on the line.

Australia was the overwhelming favorite. But New Zealand stood as optimistic challengers, hoping that its young, giant phenom could neutralize Australia"s massive longtime advantage in the matchup Andrew Bogut.

"On paper, Steven Adams is the only Tall Black who could reasonably be expected to tussle with Bogut in single coverage," a New Zealand news report read in late July.

But Adams chose not to compete and Australia rolled to two straight double-digit wins, securing the automatic bid.

Nine months later, on the other side of the world, that anticipated clash of centers from rival countries has materialized in the opposite hemisphere. The young Adams has morphed into a vital piece for the Thunder. The aging but cagey Bogut proved huge in the Warriors Game 5 season-saver.

An Olympic bid isn"t at stake, but a Western Conference title is on the line. There are plenty of factors to follow on Saturday night in OKC. But one of Game 6"s biggest storylines: the battle down under between a New Zealander and an Australian.

These two countries, separated by a three-hour flight over the Tasman Sea, have peaceful relations. Except when it comes to sports. They are heated rivals in everything, but particularly rugby and cricket.

Made fun of him when we won in cricket a while back, Adams joked of Bogut. But that was my first year. Last year we got kicked (in cricket) so I didn"t talk to him from then on. We got destroyed. It"s bad stuff.

Despite being from a similar area of the world, the two don"t know each other. They"re nine years apart. Bogut is 31, Adams is 22. When Bogut was drafted first overall in 2005, Adams was a 12-year-old with little to no basketball knowledge or experience.

I just know he"s from New Zealand, Bogut said. That"s about it. We didn"t play against each other or anything like that.

After one year at Pittsburgh, Adams was the 12th overall pick in a thin 2013 draft. The selection didn"t generate buzz around the league, but it was a national story back in New Zealand. Adams became the country"s first-ever first-round pick.

Despite the proximity, though, that meant little to Bogut.

Is it good for Australia that a New Zealander got drafted? Bogut said. I couldn"t really care. He"s not from Australia. That"s like asking if it"s good a Canadian got drafted for America.

Adams" growth was steady through his first three seasons in the league. But in these playoffs showing improved touch and admirable toughness Adams has burst into the national spotlight.

He dominated an overmatched Mavericks frontline in the first round, then completely outplayed Tim Duncan in the Spurs series, possibly ushering one of the league"s most legendary players to his retirement.

So many positive factors have collided for the Thunder during this surprising postseason run. Dion Waiters is more reliable than ever. Andre Roberson is hitting 3s. Billy Donovan has pushed all the right buttons. The two stars have committed to the defensive end.

But perhaps most influential is the evolution of Adams from a promising young talent to a physically imposing, suddenly polished two-way force at the center spot.

That emergence continued in the first four games of this Warriors series. Adams averaged 11.0 points and 8.5 rebounds, while anchoring a strong defensive effort. Meanwhile his Australian counterpart, Bogut, was basically a non-factor, averaging 3.0 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.2 fouls.

Before Game 5, Steve Kerr publicly called out Bogut. In Game 5, Bogut responded, going for 15 points and 14 rebounds, while patrolling the paint and forcing a ton of errant Thunder layups.

The big fella was amazing tonight, Draymond Green said. At both ends of the floor.

Adams gave decent minutes, but battled through some early foul trouble and was beat to a few rebounds by Bogut. For the first time this series, Australia outplayed New Zealand.

As this clash shifts to Game 6, the Thunder looks to flip that back in its direction. The battle down under will be crucial.
