Historic sites get more visitors thanks to "Hamilton" fans

Hamilton cast performs "Alexander Hamilton" at White House

Historic sites connected to Alexander Hamilton are getting a lot more visitors than they used to, thanks to a little Broadway show you might have heard about.

Fans of the musical Hamilton, which won 11 Tony Awards on June 12, are hunting down every Hamilton spot they can think of, from his home in Harlem, to his burial site in Lower Manhattan, to Hamilton Park in Weehawken, N.J., near the dueling grounds where he was shot by Aaron Burr.

Kerissa Bearce, 35, an instructional technology coach from Fort Worth, visited all those sites and many more when she came to New York to see the show with two friends.

I pretty much dont remember anything about the founding of my country, but now Im learning all of it, Bearce said.

Bearce is among thousands of Hamilton fans boosting visitor numbers at historic sites that in the past were barely on tourists radars. Hamilton Grange, his Harlem home and a National Park Service site, had as many visitors in the first five months of this year as it did in all of 2015 more than 35,000 people. And thats a 75 percent increase over the 21,000 visitors who toured the Grange in 2014, the year before Hamilton opened.

Artifacts at the site include a piano that Hamiltons daughter Angelica played. A replica of the instrument is featured in the show.

But fans are also finding their way to more obscure spots, like the Schuyler-Hamilton House in Morristown, N.J., where Hamilton courted his wife, Eliza.

We have 5-year-olds, 16-year-olds, 30-year-olds coming here now. We did not have that audience in our museum before. We had 60-year-olds

Pat Sanftner, Schuyler-Hamilton House tour guide

We have 5-year-olds, 16-year-olds, 30-year-olds coming here now, said Pat Sanftner, who gives tours of the Schuyler-Hamilton House. We did not have that audience in our museum before. We had 60-year-olds. Its wonderful to have these conversations now with visitors. Were not just teaching. Theyre questioning us and theyre thinking.

Tourists have always visited Hamiltons tomb in the graveyard at Trinity Church in Lower Manhattan. But now, not only are more people paying their respects, but theyre also looking for the graves of Hamiltons wife, sister-in-law, son and his buddy Hercules Mulligan.

Visitors also now leave flowers, stones, coins, notes, even a potted plant, at Hamiltons monument and on Elizas stone just in front of it, said Trinity spokeswoman Lynn Goswick.

The shows star and creator, Lin-Manuel Miranda, wrote part of Hamilton at the Morris-Jumel Mansion in Manhattans Washington Heights. The mansions executive director, Carol Ward, estimates that half of their visitors now come because of the show.

The show has gotten people interested in history in a completely new, fresh way

Carol Ward, Morris-Jumel Mansion executive director

Weve been riding the wave, Ward said. The show has gotten people interested in history in a completely new, fresh way.

The Morris-Jumel Mansion is known for a dinner party hosted there by President George Washington for his Cabinet, attended by Hamilton, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. (A different dinner party depicted in the shows song The Room Where It Happens took place at Jeffersons residence, now marked with a plaque at 57 Maiden Lane in Lower Manhattan.) But the mansion has a Burr connection, too: Burr married the rich widow who owned the house. She later divorced Burr, and her lawyer was Hamiltons son.

A truly obscure spot on the Hamilton trail is a well where a womans body was found in 1800, located in Manhattans SoHo neighborhood. Hamilton and Burr defended the womans lover against a murder charge, and while the well isnt mentioned in the musical, the trial is referenced in one song. That was enough to send Bearce and her friends looking for the well, now located inside the COS clothing store on Spring Street.

We were in pursuit of that well, said Bearce.

Other pilgrimage sites include Hamilton statues in Central Park and at Columbia University. A sign outside 82 Jane St. in Greenwich Village marks the site where Hamilton was taken to die after the duel left him mortally wounded.

Some destinations are advertising in the Broadway Playbill for Hamilton, including the Caribbean island of Nevis, where Hamilton was born, and the Museum of American Finance on Wall Street, where Hamilton founded the Bank of New York. The museum has an Alexander Hamilton Room.

The I Love NY tourism campaign is pitching sites from a Path Through History trail using lyrics from the show.

The Alexander Hamilton Awareness Society (AHA) has been holding Hamilton celebrations since 2012, but bigger turnouts are expected this year for AHAs Celebrate Hamilton programs. Events scheduled for July include the Young Immigrant Hamilton Tour, July 7-8, in Elizabeth, N.J., where Hamilton attended prep school, and a July 7 talk about Hamilton as Spymaster, focusing on his espionage work, at Fraunces Tavern in Lower Manhattan.

The New-York Historical Society launches Summer of Hamilton July 4 with a variety of programs, plus artifacts like the pamphlet admitting Hamiltons affair with Maria Reynolds. Hamilton items already on display at the society include a pair of statues depicting him and Burr facing off in the duel, along with replicas of their pistols.

The I Love NY tourism campaign is pitching sites from a Path Through History trail using lyrics from the show. For example, as Washingtons right-hand man, Hamilton was a guest at the Van Wyck Homestead in Fishkill, N.Y. Elizas sister Angelica sings shes always by your side at Elizas wedding to Hamilton at the Schuyler Mansion in Albany.

And at the Dutchess County Courthouse in Poughkeepsie, Hamilton argued for ratification of the Constitution, as in, Were making history.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers Stripped Down During Carpool Karaoke With James Corden

Red Hot Chili Peppers Carpool Karaoke

James Cordens latest Carpool Karaoke segment of theLate Late Show is one for the books. No matter how fantastic Cordens past celebrity guests may have been, this carpool, featuring the Red Hot Chili Peppers, involves grown men wrestling and a car full of shirtless dudesit just doesnt get much more striking than that.

As the gang jammed out to classics like Cant Stop, Give It Away Now, and Under The Bridge, they exchanged delightfully bizarre banter. They partook in some serious head banging and busted out some major dance moves (it was basically a free Red Hot Chili Peppers concert). They regaled Corden with a tale of a pot-fueled camping trip they took as teenagers. In a sweet moment, lead singer Anthony Kiedis and bassist Flea revealed that in all their years of making music together, theyve never had a real fight. At one point, Corden and Flea even broke into Food Glorious Food from the musicalOliver, because why not?

The peak of the groups hijinks, however, arrived when Corden and Kiedis challenged each other to a wrestling match. I love a good man wrestle, Corden said. A grapple, no puncheslike a hold-down. Natch, they pulled over and found a strangers front lawn to hold their match on. Kiedis won almost immediately. I didnt see that coming, Kiedis, Corden sighed. Oh, and if that all werent wild enough, Flea, Kiedis, and Corden then proceeded to take their shirts off (their fellow band members opted to remain clothed.) All in all, it was nothing short of glorious. Watch it for yourself below and prepare to dance along.

OnePlus 3 Camera Samples Released; Smartphone Leaked in Numerous Images

OnePlus 3 - Unboxing & Hands On!

There is little left to the imagination when it comes to the OnePlus 3. The smartphone has been subjected to numerous leaks ahead of its June 14 unveil, and now, we get treated with camera samples, and some leaked pricing details.

After releasing camera samples a few days ago, OnePlus has released more images to show what the OnePlus 3 camera can do. The four images are stunning; capturing movement, depth of field, and colours adeptly.

There"s one image of a small bridge by the sea, highlighting the camera"s focusing abilities. Another image of a firecracker shows how movement is captured well, even in low light conditions. The other two images also boast of great colour and clarity. Again, these pictures may have been taken after much detail and deliberation, and a novice may not be able to produce such results.

Of course, we will reserve our final judgement about the OnePlus 3"s camera for when we review the device.

In the meanwhile, Chinese tipster Reviewer has also unveiled the possible pricing of the smartphone (via Mobipicker), alongside numerous images of the smartphone from all angles, leaving nothing to the imagination. While the OnePlus 3 is said to come in several bundles, the tipster claims that the base variant will be priced at CNY 1,999 (roughly Rs. 20,300). If this is true, its quite an attractive offering, considering the rumoured specs.

The company in the meanwhile has also released the kernel and device tree of OxygenOS to the community for further development.

For all those who don"t already know, OnePlus is hosting the launch event on a VR space station. The smartphone will be sold invite-free soon after launch. The OnePlus 3 is expected to come with a 5.5-inch display, Snapdragon 820 SoC, 4GB or 6GB RAM options, 16-megapixel rear camera, and an 8-megapixel front lens.

Iceland"s saga is the best story of Euro 2016

Cristiano Ronaldo vs Iceland HD (14/06/2016) Portugal vs Iceland 1-1 (EURO 2016)

There are more people in Topeka, Kansas than in Iceland, and yet the frozen rock on top of the world has produced a country that"s playing with the world"s best in the European Championships. Their underdog story is longer than 90 minutes.

Iceland tied Portugal in their Euro 2016 debut, but let"s be honest. Iceland beat Portugal.

Portugal has the eighth-best team in the world, per the latest FIFA rankings, and they have the world"s highest-paid player, Cristiano Ronaldo. Iceland has the 175th-biggest population, 1/30th as large as Portugal. Portugal"s capital, Lisbon, has 200,000 more residents than the whole of Iceland. This month,27,000 Icelandic fans, or roughly 8 percent of the nation"s population, made their way to Saint-Etienne for the game against Portugal, where they went nuts for their tiny nation"s proud team.

Iceland"s goalkeeper works as a music video director. One of their coaches is a dentist. And yet Iceland held strong against the Portuguese, with Birkir Bjarnason tallying a goal in the 50th minute that would hold for a 1-1 scoreline.

While Portugal dominated possession and had more chances than Iceland, forcing goalie Hannes Thor Halldorsson to make 12 saves, Iceland threatened late and had opportunities to potentially beat the Portuguese.

After the game, Ronaldo mocked the Icelandic side:

Bitterness aside, it"s not surprising Ronaldo completely failed to understand the joy of Iceland"s accomplishment. He"s from a completely different world. The Guardian reported that when he visited Iceland with the Portuguese team for a qualifying match in 2010, he assumed he could have his own private dressing room, when in fact the stadium only had two, one per team.

It"s rather hard to track down the salaries of all of Iceland"s players (or non-superstar soccer players, period), but their highest-paid player, Gylfi Sigurdsson, makes about $4 million. That"s 1/20th of Ronaldo"s annual haul including endorsements. We"re pretty confident Iceland"s entire team combined makes less than Ronaldo does.

Celebrate Iceland for many things: Their rabid fans, their imposing Viking names, their underdog status, whatever. But know this: They come from a freezing volcanic rock in the middle of the ocean on top of the world, and they"ve managed to make a d**n good soccer team. Everything else aside, that"s incredible.

* * *

First, let"s get a grasp on how small Iceland is. There are 332,000 people in Iceland. That makes them smaller than Luxembourg, or Malta, or the Bahamas, or, for that matter, Topeka, Kan.

They"re the smallest country ever to qualify for a competition of this caliber. No country with a currently smaller population than Iceland has ever made the World Cup, and Iceland is the smallest to make the Euros.

If we go to less prestigious events, there"s some precedent. Two smaller nations have qualified for North America"s lowly equivalent to the Euros, the Gold Cup, and they both got blown out. Grenada was outscored 25-1 in the 2009 and 2011 editions, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines was outscored 8-0 in the 1999 edition. Tahiti made it to the 2013 Confederations Cup on a fluke, and were outscored 24-1 in just three games.

Iceland was like this for many years. In their attempt to qualify for the 2010 World Cup, they finished last in their group, only winning one game, a home matchup with Macedonia. In their attempt to qualify for the 2012 Euros, they finished second to last, again only winning a single game, this time a home matchup with Cyprus. (Macedonia and Cyprus are not as good as Portugal.) As the 2012 Euros were held, the Icelandic squad was ranked 131st in the world.

But several amazing things happened that turned Iceland into a legitimate squad. Some were systemic. The Guardian wrote about the cultural and infrastructural changes that have allowed Iceland to succeed. They"ve built a slew of top-notch indoor practice buildings, some in small towns that would never justify such facilities, allowing soccer to be a year-round sport in a country that can get rather cold. And an absurd amount of people have received coaching training -- one in 825 Icelandic people has attained a UEFA B coaching license, as opposed to one in 11,000 in England -- ensuring players receive high-quality training from a young age.

Some of it has been due to the brilliance of the team"s coach, Lars Lagerback, who had previously coached much bigger teams like Sweden and Nigeria. Vice Sports profiled Lagerback, as well as his assistant Heimir Hallgrimsson, both of whom have been integral to the team"s success.

Between infrastructure, coaching and yes, skill, Iceland became a quality team. They were just one game from qualifying for the 2014 World Cup, finishing second in their group and making a two-leg playoff with Croatia for one World Cup spot. They drew 0-0 in the first game, but lost 2-0 at Croatia. And they genuinely earned their spot in these Euros. They beat the Netherlands twice, in Reykjavik and in Amsterdam, and finished second in their qualifying group. There have been a lot of newcomers in this tournament because it was expanded from the typical 16-team format to 24 teams, but as the second-best team in their group, Iceland didn"t benefit from that change. They would"ve made it in the old way.

This is a feel-good story, sure, but it"s also a legitimate soccer story. After pulling even with Portugal, Iceland are two more strong performances from actually making it out of this group. Austria looked abysmal Tuesday, and if Iceland are good enough to tie Portugal, they should be good enough to hold their own against Hungary as well. There"s legitimate reason to believe they can go on to the knockout stages.

We"ll be following Iceland"s saga as closely as anybody.
