On Ariel Winter, Body Shaming and Why We Insist on Policing Curvy Bodies

"Modern Family" Star Ariel Winter on Breast Reduction, Legal Battle with Mother

Ariel Winter, who"s best known for her role as the book smart little sister onModern Family, just can"t catch a break.

To her senior prom, she wore a black and white lace strapless dress. To her graduation, she wore a light pink bandage dress under her graduation gown. Most recently, to her graduation party over the weekend, she wore a light pink dress with a cutout in the middle. And after she posted a picture of herself in each of these outfits on Instagram, she was body shamed.

Source:Instagram

Ariel Winter is 18 years old and users frequently comment on her pictures, saying, "What a s**t am I right?" and "Put your t**s away... your dad"s gotta see them." On her , they wrote things like, "You seriously wore that in front of family?"

What this says about us as a society is that we are still borderline obsessed with policing curvy women"s bodies, and immediately deeming them inappropriate. To see this in action, compare the reaction to Winter"s attire to, say, Kylie Jenner.

Source:Instagram

Kylie Jenner and Ariel Winter are the same age, wearing nearly the same kind of dress, with approximately the same amount of skin showing, and yet people are far more interested in shaming Winter and her body than Jenner.

A selection of comments from Winter"s graduation party picture:

"I"d tie my daughter down if she wore any thing like that."

"s*x sells."

"Girl you need to cover up. Respect your body!"

A selection of comments on Jenner"s snapchat video, which was reposted on Instagram:

"You look great Kylie, love the outfit."

"She slayed this outfit though."

"I WANT HER OUTFIT."

AsMTV Newshas already written, the two are nearly style twins, wearing similar, curve-hugging silhouettes. And yet, commenters are quick to shame Winter"s favoritism toward more revealing dresses, while they praise Jenner. And that very well may be because of Winter"s proportions, because, really, the only physical difference between the two are their busts.

For Winter, the criticism even transcends the most modest of outfits, with Instagram commenters writing things like "Panties or shorts?" and "Not those hooker shorts again" on a picture of the actress wearing a turtleneck and shorts.

Source:Instagram

Despite still being a teenager, Winter"s already had a tough go in the spotlight, facing criticism for how she dressesand her body since it started to change. When she was just 17, she decided toundergobreast reduction surgery. Although she repeatedly claimed that the decision was entirely her own, she did explain how the media specifically had made her uncomfortable before she reduced her bust size to a 32D.

Source:John Salangsang/AP

"It made me feel really uncomfortable, because as women in the industry, we are totally oversexualized and treated like objects," she told People. "Every article that has to do with me on a red carpet had to do with "Ariel Winter"s Crazy Cleavage!" or "Ariel Winter Shows Huge b***s at an Event!" That"s all people would recognize me by not, "Oh, she does great work on Modern Family.""

She also noted that the bullying she faced on social media didn"t help.

"We live in a day and age where everything you do is ridiculed," she told Glamour. "The internet bullies are awful. I could post a photo where I feel good, and 500 people will comment about how fat I am and that I am disgusting."

But even after her breast reduction, Winter is facing a nearly constant onslaught of online abuse, and it all revolves around her body.In fact, in many senses, her speaking out has only egged on the trolls to go in for her harder, starting online wars with her fans, who ardently defend her in the comments section, only to sometimes receive vitriol directed at them.

"Graduating from w***e school?" one commenter wrote on a picture of Winter graduating from high school, to which fans slammed back: "What"s your investment in how she chooses to dress?" and "Don"t listen to what anybody says. You look beautiful."

Source:Instagram

Back in November, she even tried to take a stand against her online bullies, who were telling her that she was "asking for it" after she posted a picture of herself in a swimsuit. Winter was just 17 at the time.

"Who knew that an innocent photo with my nieces would turn into this?" she wrote. "The height of a girl"s skirt or whatever she is wearing for that matter, does not imply what she is asking for. It sickens me to think at 17 years old, a photo of myself with my nieces is suggesting that I"m "asking for it.""

Source:Instagram

But now, still in 2016, it seems like the internet isn"t comfortable with a woman like Winter. For a naturally curvy woman in Hollywood like Winter who doesn"t want to step out every day in a burlap sack or a gigantic, long sleeve muumuu, there"s simply no winning.

And Winter seems to known this. On her Instagram, despite the hateful comments, she"s insisted on wearing whatever she wants, whether that be a strapless gown that shows her scars or a crop top paired with a pair of short shorts. However, that doesn"t mean she doesn"t care. Given the numerous statements that she"s made about body shaming as well as slutshaming it"s clear that she does, but is actually actively fighting her haters and society"s expectations of her by dressing how she d**n well pleases.

What else could be more satisfying?

Wiz Khalifa Hints That Him And Kanye West Aren"t All Good, After All

Wiz Khalifa Reveals Truth Behind Kanye West Finger In the Butt Tweet - VIDEO
by Adam Fleischer 16h ago

The Wiz Khalifa and Kanye West Twitter spat that happened back in January appeared to be over, but apparently there are still some hard feelings.

It started when Ye took exception with Wiz taking exception with his album title, Waves (which, of course, he later changed), and only snowballed from there: There was the lighthearted cool pants comment and, on the other end, Kanye telling Wiz, I own your kid.

Many felt he crossed the line with comments like the last one, and it seemed Kanye realized as much, too, because he called up Wiz just days later and apologized. And things were all good.

Except, not really.

When asked about the issue on Power 105.1 on Friday, the Pittsburgh native suggested that hes come to feel like the apology was a bit empty. I wouldnt necessarily say its squashed, though, he said, because, when you see him talk about it, it doesnt add up to what he said to me on the phone.

Welp, it feels fair to assume the Kanye West x Wiz Khalifa collab is, still, not on the way.

STEVEN TYLER Says AEROSMITH"s "Farewell" Tour Will Launch In 2017

Steven Tyler - I don"t want to miss a thing (Acoustic)

During a live call-in interview on "The Howard Stern Show" on SiriusXM satellite radio earlier today (Tuesday, June 21), AEROSMITH frontman Steven Tyler revealed that the band will embark on a farewell tour in 2017. Tyler, who will release his first-ever solo album, "We"re All Somebody From Somewhere", on July 15, said: "I love this band. I really do. I want to squash every thought that anybody might have about "the band"s over."

"We"re doing a farewell tour but it"s only because it"s time. We"ve never done that."Asked to confirm the band is planning a final run, Tyler said: "I think so. Next year." On the subject of whether guitarist Joe Perry understands that, the singer said: "Mmm-hmm."But he added that the tour will last "probably forever," and refers to THE WHO having staged several farewells, saying: "I know. Can you believe that? How about KISS? They did 19 farewell tours."While on hiatus, the members of AEROSMITH have been keeping busy with solo projects Perry recently hit the road with his star-studded side project HOLLYWOOD VAMPIRES, featuring Alice Cooper, Johnny Depp, former GUNS N" ROSES drummer Matt Sorum, and STONE TEMPLE PILOTS bassist Robert DeLeo. AEROSMITH guitarist Brad Whitford has joined forces once again with Derek St. Holmes for a 19-date spring and summer run.Perry in April spoke frankly about the state of AEROSMITH, admitting to Rolling Stone: "A farewell tour is something we"ve talked about doing for years, let"s say roughly in the last five years. It"s just something the band"s talked about at various times."Perry also talked about the band gravitating towards working on their own in 2016. He said: "It"s very rare you get this much time, considering the way we"ve always been on the road or been in the studio doing whatever, so it"s been a good time to do some of these other projects. Steven has been off working really hard on his solo thing. I know it"s something he"s always wanted to do. He puts so much into AEROSMITH, he"s never really given himself the time to do this, so it"s worked out really well for him. I don"t really hear from him much but I wouldn"t expect that I would considering he"s working on a record and doing gigs and the whole thing. But when things start gearing up, we start rehearsing for the South American tour, I"m sure we"ll start forming a plan for the next year or two or whatever."Perry said that although AEROSMITH splitting isn"t something he"s looking forward to, he feels that the band is nearing the end. "It"s getting to be about that time, but I"m really looking forward to the VAMPIRES thing," he said. "And I know Brad"s doing stuff with Derek and they"re buddies from way back. Everybody"s got stuff that they"re doing, so it"s kind of up the middle. It"s inevitable that once we get back together I"ll be ready to play "Dream On" again."The guitarist told The Pulse Of Radio that ultimately, the thrill of what AEROSMITH accomplished musically trumps all the problems that the band has endured due to drugs, women, management and ego issues. "It"s really the five of us, y"know, as a band," he said. "And it"s still exciting to walk out onstage with these guys. And that, I think, is the glue that keeps us coming back. Sometimes I ask that question myself, y"know, "Why am I still doin" it?" Well, when I walk out onstage in Moscow and everybody out there is singing words to songs that we wrote in the basement, or, y"know, in some studio somewhere. It"s nothin" short of a miracle, y"know? And so we kind of have a lot of respect for that."

Kelly McGillis: From "Top Gun" to "1 a Minute" (EDITED Interview) FB JoyBeharHLN for full vid).

WATCH: Milo On Why Britain Should Leave The EU To Stop Muslim Immigration

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Voting (HBO)

Im currently in Girdwood,Alaska. You may wonder what has caused the gay European population of Alaska to climb, well, 100%, and the answer is that I am in the United States because I no longer recognise the Europe I grew up in.

I most often talk and write about the United States these days, but today I must talk to you about my homeland and the problems itfaces. It is important that Americans understand these problems because Europes problems today will be Americas tomorrow if yall dont act to prevent them.

SIGN UP FOR OUR NEWSLETTER

For hundreds of years, Europe was a mesmerising and unique continent packed with fragile and remarkable cultures in a comparatively tiny area. It really is small. You cantake a train trip through several countries and experience half a dozen different cuisines, styles of music and people in the same time it would take to drive across an average-sized state in the US.

But I worry that my Europe the Europe of Mozart, Wagner, Rembrandt, Shakespeare, Hobbes, Locke and Hume is rapidly disappearing. What has replaced it is a confused place with no clear identity, clouded with fear, run by unaccountable and incompetent globalist bureaucrats.

Its people are afraid. Theyre afraid of something the media and political classes seem intent on encouraging, against the wishes of the people.

Im talking about the rising tide of Islamic immigration.

This is a difficult subject, and one that many Europeans dont want to talk or think about, for fear of being branded racist or bigoted. But, to my mind, its the most important dimension of the referendum, easily eclipsing questions about GDP, import tariffs and even national sovereignty.

Europe has bent over backwards to accommodate Muslims, hoping with every placation that Muslims will integrate with their host cultures.

But thats not happening. Instead of integrating, Muslims have got more segregated and extreme in their beliefs and practices.

Think about some of the news stories weve seen about Islam. In Rotherham, 1,400 girls were raped by Pakistani rape gangs because the authorities were too afraid of being called racist to investigate their crimes properly.

So-called rapefugees are flooding Europe. We dont see many women and children flooding into our cities under the cover of western compassion. We do see a lot of fighting-age young men with iPhones.

There is now a Muslim crime wave in Europe that governments wont recognise. In Sweden, recently crowned the rape capital of Europe, police have even been banned from mentioning the ethnicity of rape suspects. Why?

The terrorist attacks in Paris and Brussels were committed by a mixture of homegrown terrorists and so-called refugees that is, ISIS operatives who came in because were too dumb to vet migrants properly.

France, motherland of Berlioz, Sartre, Debussy, Monet and Czanne, is today full of police no-go zones. Calais is now known as The Jungle and the Paris Metro looks like South Sudan and is about as safe.

In my home town of London weve elected a Muslim, Sadiq Khan, as mayor. We call him a moderate, ignoring his past history with some nasty characters, the fact that his wife immediately donned a hijab after he was elected, his idiotic beef with Donald Trump and his move to ban body shaming ads on the Tube.

He has vowed to ban images of women in the public square in the name of feminism. But that sounds eerily like what happens in the Middle East, doesnt it?

The people of Europe have started to realise they have not a radical Islam problem, but an Islam problem. Some Europeans might find this difficult to hear. They might even call it islamophobic. But consider the evidence.

A Gallup poll a few years ago showed that 100 per cent of British Muslims believe homosexuality is an unacceptable lifestyle choice.Over half of them want it made illegal, too.39 per cent of British Muslims believe a woman should always obey her husband. And a quarter of them want sharia law in the UK.

I was in Orlando last week, the site of the deadliest mass shooting in American history. And it wasnt a troubled white male loser gunning down a school. It was a Muslim described as not particularly religious by his dad who killed 50 gay people and maimed 50 more.

There is no reason to suppose thatMuslims in Europe have any better opinions of women, gays, blacks, latinos and, lets face it, everyone else, than Orlando killer Omar Mateen.

Dont make the mistake of considering Islam a problem for gays. Muslims have a unique ability to be offended at anything. Its us today. It will be you tomorrow.

Again: this isnt radical Islam. Its Islam.

European elites have suggested adding Turkey to the EU. Turkey, once a country headed for a secular, progressive future, is now a hotbed of Islamic extremism. It is the home of the Islamic creationist movement and a dozen other deeply regressive strands of Islamic thought.

Turkey does not belong in a political union with the United Kingdom.

Englands Brexit campaign is a positive step to regain its national sovereignty and prevent an influx of Muslim refugees. The EU, certainly, is not willing to do whats necessary to make people safe.

In the past, immigrant meant someone who wanted to improve their familys future. Muslim immigrants do not fit that definition. They want to turn Bradford into Baghdad.

Leaving the European Union is Britains best chance of avoiding the fate that Germany and Sweden have chosen for themselves. If I were you, I would vote Leave.

Markets just got a hard lesson in humility, Jim Grant says

Governor’s comments on Brexit on CNBC TV18

It"s time for financial markets across the globe to eat a big slice of humble pie, Jim Grant said Friday after the shocking result from the United Kingdom referendum on European Union membership.

"It"s a great day for humility," Grant, the founder and editor of Grant"s Interest Rate Observer, told CNBC"s "Squawk Box."

Financial markets across the globe tumbled after the U.K. voted in favor of leaving the EU, a decision markets were not expecting. Ahead of the vote, several polls and bookmakers showed support leaning toward the remain camp.

On Friday, U.S. stock futures implied a lower open of more 2.5 percent, while major European indexes shed more than 4 to 8 percent.

"Independence Day: Resurgence" Now Opens June 24 And Why It Almost Didn"t Happen [Extended Trailer]

Independence Day: Resurgence | A Candid Conversation: Larger Than Life [HD] | 20th Century FOX

They definitely messed with the wrong planet, as the Independence Day sequel is now officially opening on June 24 and not July 4, as previously stated.

The original Independence Day epic science fiction movie dates back to 1996, when the film starred Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum, and Bill Pullman. Its been a few years since then, but as announced by 20th Century Fox, the sequel is finally coming to the big screen on June 24 this year.

Dont mess with Earth. Watch the new trailer for #IndependenceDay: Resurgence, in theaters June 24.https://t.co/3tHkTiyEwV

Independence Day (@IndependenceDay) April 22, 2016

That sequel finally arrives 20 years after Independence Day took $817 million at the box office. Reportedly, there was talk back in 2002 of a sequel inspired by the fear and paranoia generated by 9/11 but Roland Emmerich, director of the first film, didnt like the idea.

Everything sounded like a repeat, and we dont want to do repeats, Emmerich explained.

His producing partner, Dean Devlin, said, If we ever did one, it would have to be as original to the first film as James Camerons Aliens was to the first one.

She has arrived. #IndependenceDay pic.twitter.com/sbbwrGjyOa

Independence Day (@IndependenceDay) June 8, 2016

It also turns out the sequel, Independence Day: Resurgence, almost didnt happen, as Smith was unable to reprise his role as Captain Steven Hiller. For this reason, Emmerich reportedly almost lost interest in making the sequel. In fact, he said back in 2011, Will is such a big part of this movie, I wouldnt do it without him.

According to the Mirror Online, Emmerich, along with scriptwriter and producer, Devlin, asked Smith to reprise his role in Resurgence, but at that time, Will had just completed filming Men in Black 3 and was still busy filming the 2013 flop Sci-Fi movie After Earth, which also starred his own son, Jaden Smith.

Emmerich added that his timing was bad when contacting Smith about the sequel and that this was confirmed when the MIB actor responded in the negative, saying he couldnt do three science-fiction movies in a row.

In related news on the Inquisitr:

While at first Emmerich was disheartened and lost interest in the project, he changed his mind when scriptwriters Nicolas Wright and James A. Woods said to have rewritten the second half of the film got involved.

This involvement led to a change in the story-line of Independence Day 2 which will now center on the orphans whose families were killed during the first alien invasion.

This means war. #IndependenceDay pic.twitter.com/aFOAkSyRdq

Independence Day (@IndependenceDay) June 10, 2016

According to a report by Empire Online, the fact that the films script was rewritten also attracted new stars to the Independence Day franchise. While the cast still includes both Goldblum and Pullman, there is the major addition of new cast members, including Liam Hemsworth, Travis Tope, Angela Yeung, Jessie Usher, and Maika Monroe.

Of interest to note, in the film the U.S. has a female president, with Sela Ward playing President Elizabeth Lanford and sounding remarkably like presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton in the trailer above.

The title was the next problem. At first Emmerich toyed with Independence Day: Requiem and Independence Day: Retaliation, but ended up settling on Resurgence, saying that We call it the War of 96 in the film.

Its like a post-World generation thats unified, and thats amazing to see a world come together with a common enemy. Thats a resurgence.

Emmerich also realized he had always wanted to make a sequel to the movie before he retired, telling Empire Magazine, Maybe its the fact that Im turning 60 this year. I have a little feeling of Oh gosh about it.

I have a lot of crew members who are in this business because of Independence Day Finally, I just sort of said to myself, Well maybe before I retire I should really do this.

So, luckily for fans of the first film, Emmerich did, indeed, go ahead with the sequel, which is reportedly the first time the German director has ever directed a sequel to any movie.

Now in the latest news, the sequel is scheduled for release on June 24, despite the fact that it was previously said to be getting a rather more appropriate July 4 premiere.
