Why the Brexit is really British Independence Day

Yahoo Finance API Tutorial - 1 - How to get a stock"s data using Yahoo"s Finance API

By David Nelson, CFA

Thursday, June 23 will go down in history as Britains Independence Day. Understandably, fear and confusion over just what a Brexit looks like will weigh on all parties in the weeks and months ahead.

I"m sure when the United States declared its independence there were many saying it would be an economic disaster. We went on to become the most powerful economic engine the world has ever known.

In the wake of Fridays aftermath, it was hard not to notice that the FTSE was holding up better than most markets on the continent. I suspect that with the British pound down to a 30-year low, investors understand that it should help British exports. It remains to be seen just how much help the weaker currency will be in the long run.

For the EU, this is a gut check. In my humble opinion, Britain wont be the last to exit. Without significant changes, other countries will consider an exit as their best option. Already, nationalist parties throughout the continent have petitioned to hold exit referendums similar to the Brexit.

In the end, I believe theres life after divorce. Its in everyones best interest for trade to go on. Treaties will be re-negotiated under Article 50, which probably comes into play in October when Prime Minister Cameron steps down. The process could take as long as two years.

Youre going to hear a lot of people do an about face in the days and weeks ahead. Weve already seen a reversal from U.S. President Barack Obama. It wasnt that long ago when he was saying Britain would have to go to the back of the line. Today, he says that our special relationship will survive."

Political Outlook

Theres a strong parallel between whats happening in Europe and our election cycle here. Unchecked immigration and too many regulations has set off a populist wave that has already toppled one major governmentWhos next?

The man on the street

A couple of weeks ago, one of the international managers at my firm was in London and made the following observation: It"s clear politicians and business leaders want to remain, but the man on the street dealing with the day-to-day challenges want out.

Putting it in perspective

Over the last week, markets had priced-in a remain victory, so a big part of Fridays 610 point fall in the Dow Industrials (^DJI) was unwinding that trade. The polls and bookies were 180 degrees wrong. What does that say for the polls here?

The knee jerk reaction will be to punish Britain, and some heads of state have spoken to that end. I think those voices will soon be drowned out as leaders get down to business.

Rejection of the political elite

This was not only a rejection of the EU, but also a rejection of the political elite. Theres a huge parallel between what just took place in Europe and our election cycle here.

Both here and abroad, there is a large group of citizens who feel government has turned a deaf ear to their causes. Again, the concerns around unchecked immigration resonates across oceans. When Brexit voters were confronted with evidence that it may hurt the economy or markets, their answer was, I dont care. Its already bad, and Im ready to roll the dice."

In the long run, I believe this can be good news for all parties. Its a wake-up call for Britain, but it"s also a wake-up call for the eurozone. Over the weekend, the six original member countries of the EUBelgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlandsare all meeting Saturday in Berlin to chart a course forward.

Its safe to say that traders will be up late Sunday evening preparing for Mondays open.

How to watch the Argentina vs. Chile Copa Amrica final

ARGENTINA vs CHILE | FINAL Copa America 2016 | PES 2016 | Previa

Tonight (June 26), we find out who rules soccer in the Americas. Argentina will play Chile in the final match of the Copa Amrica Centenario tournament, at 8pm US eastern time at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Sundays game is a rematch from earlier this month, when Argentina beat Chile 2-1 during the group rounds of the tournament. Its also a rematch of last years final, when host country Chile defeated Argentina on penalty kicks. Americans know all too well the brilliance of Messi, who scored an unbelievable free kick last week as Argentina dismantled a hapless US squad in the semifinal. While Argentina is the favorite tonight, Chile is also in excellent form after beating Mexico and Colombia by a combined nine goals. Chiles Eduardo Vargas is the tournaments leading goal scorer with six, one more than Messi.

George Will dumps Republican Party over Trump

George Will - The New Lincoln Lectures Series (March 1, 2016)

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Conservative columnist and commentator George Will is no longer a Republican, and he says Donald Trump is the reason.

During a Friday speech to the Federalist Society in Washington, Will told the crowd "this is not my party." In an interview with conservative online outlet PJ Media after the speech, Will said he had changed his party registration in his home state of Maryland from Republican to "unaffiliated", and he urged conservatives to not support Trump"s presidential campaign this year. Make sure he loses. Grit their teeth for four years and win the White House, was Will"s advice to GOP voters.

Will is a Pulitzer Prize winning columnist and was a longtime panelist on ABC"s "This Week" before joining Fox News Channel as a contributor. He has long been critical of Trump, and he previously had urged Republicans to not donate to Trump"s campaign. Trump referred to Will as a "major loser" during an appearance on MSNBC"s "Morning Joe" last month.

Johnny Manziel"s Agent Mistexts The AP Explaining EffUps

15 Dumbest Things Johnny Manziel Has Ever Done

Johnny Manziels agent sent a text to the AP obviously meant for someone else about his concerns over if his client ever had to take a p**s test. Heaven help us if one of the conditions is to pee in a bottle, the attorney wrote, among other things. He claims it was a mistake and threatened to sue if the AP published the info.

In Johnnys defense, he was probably pretty loaded when he hired this guy.

Gold Price Today Surges to Two-Year High After Brexit Vote

Wyckoff: $1,308 Gold Price Possible Post-FOMC

The gold price today (Friday, June 24) rocketed past the $1,300 mark after the results of the Brexit vote sent global markets into a wild tailspin.

As of 1:35 p.m., gold prices were up 4.6% to $1,321.10. That puts the yellow metal on track for its largest one-day gain since February and its highest close since August 2014.

The results of the UK referendum are now clear Britain has voted to leave the EU. And while the price of gold is benefiting the most from the controversial decision, markets around the world are in turmoil.

European markets all plunged on the news. The UK"s main stock index, the FTSE 100, fell 3.2% on the day, while Germany"s and France"s main indices were down 6.8% and 8%, respectively. Here in the United States, the Dow Jones Industrial Average is down 2.8%.

It"s clear the Brexit will be all everybody talks about in the coming weeks. Today, I"m going to discuss where we can expect gold prices to move in the wake of this massive frenzy.

First, here"s a recap of the gold price"s wild week

Gold Price Today Soars Following Lackluster Week

The price of gold kicked this past week off with a session of volatility. On Monday, June 20, prices fell 0.1% to close at $1,290.

Gold"s headwinds blew even stronger the following day. The metal immediately dropped by nearly $20 to $1,271 when markets opened. Gold prices eventually closed at $1,268 and logged a loss of 1.7%.

Wednesday was more of the same, though less dramatic. Gold traded flat throughout the day and closed just 0.2% lower at $1,266.

For comparison, here"s how the U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) has been trading this week

Notice how both the price of gold and the U.S. dollar declined on Wednesday. Remember, this kind of short-term behavior where both move in tandem is not typical.

This pointed toward an easing of fear regarding the likeliness of the Brexit vote producing a win for the "Leave" side.

Yesterday, the polls opened and British citizens voted on whether or not their country would leave the EU. During the day, gold prices trended lower and closed at $1,263.10 for a 0.2% loss. Again, this movement showed how investors were anticipating the country to remain in the bloc.

Then, the UK shocked the world with a Brexit, sending the gold price today to its highest level since 2014.

With today"s rally, investors want to know if gold prices will maintain these gains in the coming months.

Here"s my specific gold price target following the Brexit results
