U.S. job market bounces back in a big way

Placing Dallas Sniper Attacks In A Historical Context | Morning Joe | MSNBC

This morning that question was answered in a rather emphatic way. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported this morning that the U.S. economy added 287,000 jobs in June, making it the strongest month for job creation so far this year and the best overall since October 2015. The unemployment rate ticked higher to 4.9%, but thats not necessarily bad news: more people entered the job market last month, which affects the broader rate.

For the first time in over eight years, weve been at or below 5% unemployment for nine consecutive months. Whats more, the dramatic rebound from May to June represents the largest one-month shift in employment since before the recession began.

As for the revisions: Aprils job totals were revised up, from 123,000 to 144,000, while Mays were revised down, from 38,000 to an even more woeful 11,000. Combined, thats a modest loss of 6,000.

Over the last 12 months, the overall economy has created 2.45 million new jobs, which is a pretty healthy number, and if the current pace keeps up, were on track to create more than 2 million jobs in 2016, despite Mays dreadful totals. Whats more, June was the 69th consecutive month of positive job growth, which is the longest on record.

Above youll find the chart I run every month, showing monthly job losses since the start of the Great Recession. The image makes a distinction red columns point to monthly job totals under the Bush administration, while blue columns point to job totals under the Obama administration.

Update: Heres another chart, this oneshowing monthly job losses/gains injust the private sectorsince the start of the Great Recession.

Tomi Lahren Doubles Down On BET Remarks: "I Don"t Care What You Call Me"

Tomi Lahren Attacks Jesse Williams & Responds To Black Twitter

Advertisement - story continues below

After her take down of the BET awards for what she described as anenshrinement of black victimhood and racism, Tomi Lahren caught significant flak. But shes not backing down.

Here it goes again, I call out a race bait and Im black Twitter public enemy No. 1. Oh,bring it on, Lahren began. Half-white Jesse Williams stands up at the BET awards and bashes white people for being white and Im the racist? OK, sure. If hes half white is he half racist?

Im not pressed or angry black people gettin woke, Im all for it, Lahren said, quoting some of her dissenters. But youre telling me it takes a stupid BET award speech or a Super Bowl performance by entertainers to empower you? And what exactly are you getting woke to do? Thats what I dont get.

Lahren went on to claim she understands some racism does exist, but believes it will not resolve itself so long as our leaders continue to exploit the divide for their advantage.

Listen, I know racism exists and its not going to stop when our leaders keep exploiting the divide, she said. Some in the black entertainment community, like Jesse Williams, believe the only way to empower is to pit black Americans against white Americans in some kind of a dominance battle, a melanin showdown. I dont want any part of that.

I talk about race and race baiting because, quite frankly, most white people are afraid to. They dont want to say something wrong and offend anyone, or heaven forbid be labeled a racist. I dont play that game.

Lahren saidshe believes black Americans are just as proud and capable as everyone else, but added that gold stars or special treatment for the color of your skin is ultimately insulting.

I dont think black Americans are weak, I dont think youre victims. I think youre strong proud and free Americans, just like the rest of the people in this country, she said. I dont think you need special treatment or gold stars for your existence. Thats insulting to you as individuals.

DALLAS - A 7-Eleven convenience store in downtown Dallas was shut down as the mayhem following an attack on officers poured into its parking lot.

At least five police officers were fatally shot and several more were wounded by gunfire after shots rang out at a protest through downtown Dallas streets Thursday night.

Hundreds of people packed into the parking lot of a 7-Eleven at Griffin and San Jacinto as a massive police presence pushed crowds away from the chaotic scene of the attack.

News 8s crews stationed near the 7-Eleven saw people taunting officers who were protecting the building. Many were drunk and some were believed to be stealing from inside the convenience store.

Some poured alcohol on News 8s vehicles in the parking lot, forcing our crews to move.

Management at the 7-Eleven asked that the store, which is typically open 24 hours, to be closed around midnight.

The first shots rang out just before 9 p.m. Thursday. What was described as an active scene continued into the early morning as police negotiated with a suspect barricaded in a downtown Dallas parking garage.

Obama calls Dallas shooting "vicious, calculated and despicable"

Eyewitness video of downtown Dallas shooting

President Obama has slammed the slaying of at least five police officers in Dallas as a vicious, calculated and despicable attack on law enforcement.

The commander-in-chief spoke from Poland the morning after unidentified gunmen opened fire during a police brutality protest on Thursday, and praised officers across the U.S.

There is no possible justification for these kinds of attacks or any violence against law enforcement, Obama said, adding that the police community feels the loss of the Texas officers to its core.

In addition to the five officers who had died as of Friday morning, six other officers and a civilian were wounded.

Joe Walsh wants "war" on Obama, Black Lives Matter after Dallas

Obamas remarks came a day after the President gave a lengthy address to the country Thursday addressing recent police shootings in Brooklyn, Baton Rouge, La., and suburban St. Paul, Minn.

When incidents like this occur, theres a big chunk of our fellow citizenry that feels as if because of the color of their skin, they are not being treated the same, he said on the sidelines of a NATO summit in Warsaw.

The President had also attempted to ease tension between police and minority communities, saying, When people say Black Lives Matter, they dont mean blue lives dont.

Obamas Friday speech came as police continued looking for suspects in the downtown Dallas shooting, with three in custody and one believed to have died after a standoff with officers that morning.

He said that the police targeted in the city were doing their jobs and keeping protesters safe before dozens of shots were heard and crowds fled for safety.

The President made a short plea for gun control on Friday, saying that We also know that when people are armed with powerful weapons, unfortunately it makes attacks like these more deadly and more tragic.

Obama was slated to stay in Poland until Saturday and fly to Spain, and it was not immediately clear if his trip would be shortened because of the eruption of violence at home.

In Alton Sterling"s Baton Rouge, "Blue Lives Matter"

Brown Lives Matter vs Blue Lives Matter

Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards called for a federal civil rights investigation on Tuesday into what was at that point the latest fatal police shooting of a black man in the United States.

But in May, Edwards signed a bill into law that makes targeting a police officer a hate crime.Passage of such bills at the state level is a top priority for a national organization called Blue Lives Matter, which was formed in response to the Black Lives Matter movement .

Alton Sterling, 37, was shot in the chest at point-blank range by Baton Rouge police early Tuesday morning; witnesses captured the event on video. Philando Castile, 32, was shot after police stopped his car outside St. Paul, Minnesota; his girlfriend livestreamed his death on Facebook.

But it is the civil rights of police officers that Edwards was concerned about in May, as if theirs were being routinely violated.

Im not aware of any evidence that police officers have been victimized that would justify them giving special protection, Marjorie R. Esman, executive director of the ACLU of Louisiana, told The Intercept.

Under the law, a defendant convicted of a misdemeanor could face an extra six months in prison and a $500 fine. A defendant convicted of a felony could get an extra five years in prison with hard labor and a $5,000 fine.

The new law places police officers, firefighters, and EMTs under protection from hate crimes an umbrella term that spans beyond direct assault. Aviva Shen writes at ThinkProgress:

Now that police are a protected class, this language [meant to enhance penalties for attacks against houses of worship] could be used to target any damage done to squad cars or protests on police property, like the sit-in at the Minneapolis Police Department over the death of Jamar Clark, or the Black Lives Matter blockade of the Oakland Police headquarters in California.

Lamar Advertising, based in Baton Rouge, donated more than 300 billboards that appeared across the country bearing the slogans #BlueLivesMatter and #thankublu.

We wanted to recognize the local police departments and men and women that put their lives on the line every day, Stephen Hebert of Lamar Advertising told WVIT-TV.

Laws similar to the one in Louisiana have been proposed in Kentucky, Tennessee and Chicago. Last year in c**n Rapids,Minnesota just north of Minneapolis, where Castile was killed Wednesday hundreds of supporters held a Police Lives Matter rally.

In Washington, lawmakers in the House and the Senate have both introduced a Thin Blue Line Act, which would strengthen penalties for attacks on law enforcement.

The ACLUs Esman said police are not the group of people who need attention: Right now, here in Louisiana, we are dealing with the fact that the police have killed a black man who was minding his own business.

"Greatest Hits": Meghan Trainor Nails Epic Duet With Backstreet Boys Watch

Backstreet Boys - I Want It That Way
Backstreet isdefinitely back and theyve added another member Meghan Trainor! The boy band hit the stage onABCs Greatest Hits, for a performance with the pop singer, and she basically fangirled, just like any of us would!

Meghan Trainor, 22, definitely wants it that way! TheBackstreet Boys took the stage for 90s week onGreatest Hits to perform their hit Everybody solo, before Meghan joined them forI Want It That Way. We have to point out that when the song hit the radio in 1999, Meghan was onlyfive years old, so its no surprise that she wassuper nervous before the performance!

What a blast from the past! The BSB opened the show with their classic Everybody, and then took the stage again at the end to perform their hit I Want It That Way, and while the matching white suits and perfect choreography brought us right back to middle school, one addition gave it a fresh new twist: Meghan! She threw her amazing vocals into the mix while the buys fought for her attention, and they even ended the song with I want it Meghans way!

See Pics Of Meghan Trainor PICS

Her and I have been talking since filming the show about us hopefully writing with her,A.J.McLean told Billboard. Shes such an amazing writer, sowere working it out and hopefully when her schedule permits,we can do it.She goes on tour in July, so its going to be rough, but I already told her Ill pop out to her on tour and we can write somewhere on a day off. Shes totally into it!

Meghan has been a fan of BSB for years, and was super nervous about the performance but luckily, she thanks the goofballs that actually calmed her down My first band that I loved was the Backstreet Boys, she said before taking the stage. My pop star crush was Brian [Littrell]. I was gonna marry him and my mom was gonna marry him. That was our husband! The day he got married, I remember we were like, Nooo! Singing with the Backstreet Boys is definitely a bucket-list moment.

Even AJ added that yes, she was fangirling over the guys, and they thought it was extremely sweet. He also may work with her soon again! If I was going to perform any of her songs right now, it would be Watch Me Do, which is the first track on her album, or I Love Me, AJ said. Both of those songs are amazing and I would love to do one of those with her.

Did you love their duet,HollywoodLifers? Do you hope Meghan works with BSB again? Let us know!

NBA Free Agency: Jordan Clarkson, Luol Deng, and Ivica Zubac have officially signed their Lakers contracts

Jordan Clarkson Full Highlights 2016.03.30 vs Heat - 26 Pts.

Omar Wilkes Twitter account

Update: the Lakers officially announced Clarksons contract, as well as those of Luol Deng and Ivica Zubac, in a press release on Thursday. Original story, with an added statement from general manager Mitch Kupchak, follows.

The Los Angeles Lakers were aided by the Arenas rule limiting what other teams could offer him, but the front office still deserves credit for signing Jordan Clarkson to arguably the best value contract of the 2016 free agency period (non-Kevin Durant division).

Clarkson reportedly re-signed with the Lakers on a four-year deal worth $50 million, which seems staggeringly cheap during a summer when guys like Evan Turner are getting $70 million over that same period, and (sorry Lakers fans) 30-year olds like Timofey Mozgov are getting $64 million.

Not that this ever seemed like a real danger, but any Lakers fans worried about Clarkson DeAndre Jordan-ing them (the second worst Jordan-ing behind the crying version) can rest easy, as the former 46th overall pick officially put pen to paper on his new deal on Thursday. One of Clarksons representatives shared a photo of the moment on Twitter, which you can check out below:

Clarkson being locked in solidifies the Lakers young core going forward, with the team now being set for a while without having to worry about potentially losing any of their main assets to free agency over the next few years.

Update: Jordan is an important piece of our young core and resigning him was a priority of our offseason, said Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak in the Lakers official press release. He has displayed a tremendous work ethic over the last two seasons, and we expect him to continue to develop.

Luol is a versatile defender as well as offensively talented and is a high character individual who will be invaluable mentoring our young players on the court and in the locker room, Kupchak continued. Ivica is a player we feel has a bright future in this league and we are excited to see him grow alongside our group of young players.
