Update: the Lakers officially announced Clarksons contract, as well as those of Luol Deng and Ivica Zubac, in a press release on Thursday. Original story, with an added statement from general manager Mitch Kupchak, follows.
The Los Angeles Lakers were aided by the Arenas rule limiting what other teams could offer him, but the front office still deserves credit for signing Jordan Clarkson to arguably the best value contract of the 2016 free agency period (non-Kevin Durant division).
Clarkson reportedly re-signed with the Lakers on a four-year deal worth $50 million, which seems staggeringly cheap during a summer when guys like Evan Turner are getting $70 million over that same period, and (sorry Lakers fans) 30-year olds like Timofey Mozgov are getting $64 million.
Not that this ever seemed like a real danger, but any Lakers fans worried about Clarkson DeAndre Jordan-ing them (the second worst Jordan-ing behind the crying version) can rest easy, as the former 46th overall pick officially put pen to paper on his new deal on Thursday. One of Clarksons representatives shared a photo of the moment on Twitter, which you can check out below:
Clarkson being locked in solidifies the Lakers young core going forward, with the team now being set for a while without having to worry about potentially losing any of their main assets to free agency over the next few years.
Update: Jordan is an important piece of our young core and resigning him was a priority of our offseason, said Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak in the Lakers official press release. He has displayed a tremendous work ethic over the last two seasons, and we expect him to continue to develop.
Luol is a versatile defender as well as offensively talented and is a high character individual who will be invaluable mentoring our young players on the court and in the locker room, Kupchak continued. Ivica is a player we feel has a bright future in this league and we are excited to see him grow alongside our group of young players.
