As Hillary Clinton prepares to make her choice for a vice-presidential candidate, Bill Clinton has privately expressed his support for Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia, according to three Democrats briefed on the conversations with the former president this week.
Mr. Clinton believes that Mr. Kaine, 58, a former governor and member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, has the domestic and national security rsum that both appeals to voters and makes him prepared for the presidency.
In an interview with Charlie Rose of PBS on Monday, Mrs. Clinton said she was afflicted with the responsibility gene and would value experience and preparedness over any other calculations in choosing a No. 2.
In recent days, Mrs. Clinton narrowed down her pick, and she is likely to appear with her running mate Saturday at a rally in Florida, though she could announce her choice in advance of the campaign event in a text to supporters.
Tom Vilsack, the agriculture secretary; Thomas E. Perez, the secretary of labor; and James G. Stravidis, a retired four-star Navy admiral, remain contenders.
On Wednesday, Robby Mook, Mrs. Clintons campaign manager, invited Senator Elizabeth Warrens aides to the campaigns Brooklyn headquarters to discuss how the Massachusetts senator can be helpful in the coming months. That was interpreted by some people with knowledge of the process as a sign that Mrs. Clinton has settled on a choice.
Mr. Vilsack is currently scheduled to appear with Senator Claire McCaskill of Missouri in her home state on Thursday and Friday, though he could still cancel.

An NBC News-Wall Street Journal poll from July 15 showed Mrs. Clinton beating Mr. Trump for the states 13 electoral votes by nine percentage points.
Advocates for Mr. Kaine are guardedly optimistic about his prospects, although Mr. Clinton has expressed some hesitation about the Virginia senator because of the risk of losing Mr. Kaines Senate seat to a Republican, according to two Democrats briefed on the deliberations.
Choosing Mr. Kaine could alter the balance of power in Congress should Democrats retake the Senate this year but gain a one-seat majority. While Gov. Terry McAuliffe of Virginia could appoint a Democrat to succeed Mr. Kaine next year, the seat would be up for grabs in a special election that would coincide with the states governor contest in November 2017.
With Republicans typically faring better in such off-off year elections, when turnout dips, Democrats could lose what was Mr. Kaines Senate seat just a year after Mrs. Clinton is sworn in, a political risk both the Clintons have been acutely aware of as they weighed the pros and cons of vice-presidential candidates.

Like any good dad, I pulled out the ol pre-paid debit card and plunked down $.99 for the official Tiffany Trump song, Like a Bird. Tiffany, with the voice of an angel, sings about partying, livin it up (h**l yeah), and being free like a bird. However, Dotcom has made clear that the second coming of MegaUpload will not necessarily carry the same popular label but the new name, according to TorrentFreak"will make people happy." It"s clear though that the flamboyant Dotcom is reentering the scene he once dominated but now ruled by the resilient TPB and the now mega popular KAT.
Work is now underway for the MegaUpload re-launch that Dotcom said will be leagues better than the old shuttered site. "I"m excited about the new innovations the site will contain ... I can say that this year I have set things in motion and a new cloud storage site is currently under development," Dotcom told TorrentFreak.
Much of the details for the new MegaUpload remain under wraps but Dotcom confirmed its basic function as a digital locker that users from around the world can freely access. He hinted too that the key feature is a virtually unlimited storage space.
"A new site is in the making ... (with) 100GB of free cloud storage," Dotcom said in a tweet posted July 5.

PITTSBORO, Ind.(WISH) The Brickyard 400 just got a whole lot more interesting. Jeff Gordon is returning to Sprint Cup racing this Sunday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Dale Earnhardt Jr.s concussion-like symptoms gives one of NASCARs all-time greats another chance to go out on top.
Gordon never ruled out an occasional return when he stepped out of the number 24 car last season. Now he will return this weekend to the track where he has already won five times, including the inaugural Brickyard 400 in 1994.
IMS PresidentDoug Boles was thrilledto welcome Gordon back to the iconic track.
Its really exciting to have Jeff Gordon back. We absolutely love Jeff Gordon in Indiana, certainly at the Brickyard, Boles said. Last year we made such a big deal about his last race because we really thought it would be. I guess the downside of having Jeff come is were going to miss Dale Jr., the most popular driver in the series for a long time, so thats a double-edged sword. But when youre in Indiana and you have an opportunity to have Jeff Gordon run at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, especially after hes retired, its pretty exciting to have him here.
The confirmationof Gordons participation in the Brickyard this year created more activity at the IMS ticket office as well.
I know our ticketing team is excited, Boles said. Our phone has been ringing in a way it hasnt been ringing in quite some time, just because there is so much momentum behind Jeff Gordon.
Boles isnt theonly one excited to see Gordon back on the racetrack; so are many people who live in Pittsboro.
Gordon moved to Pittsboro from California when he was a teenager. He lived there for several years before moving to North Carolina.
Even though Jeff Gordon doesnt live in Pittsboro anymore, those who live there say hes left a lasting legacy.
Everybody loves Jeff Gordon in this town, said resident Dan Martin.
Many people in the town of about 3,000 still remember him growing up there.
His mom and dad would come in here for lunch. Jeff would come in and join them for lunch. He was 18 and driving for the (NASCAR) Busch series, said Gerard Mason, owner of the Mason Inn.
Now, years later and about one year after announcing his retirement, Gordon will make a return to the racetrack at the Brickyard.
Pittsboro resident George Klein says hes followed Gordons career, and he says hes not surprised the five-time Brickyard 400 winner will be back on the track.
When he said he retired, he never said he was fully retired. Hes always left the door open, so it wasnt totally surprising, Klein said.
I think everybody in the town is pretty excited about Jeff Gordon stepping in for Mr. Dale Earnhardt (Jr.), addedMartin.
Many people at the Mason Inn on Wednesday say theyre fans of Gordon because of his accomplishments, not because he grew up in their town.
Not so much because he was from here or graduated from Tri-West and so forth, but just so much because he was a good driver, says Klein.

Paul Pogba is reportedly the subject of a massive bidding war this week, one which will end with Manchester United most likely paying a fee in the neighborhood of Guyanas GDP for his services.
