In a 45-minute interview with The New York Times on Wednesday, Donald Trump spoke at length about his "America First," economics-based foreign policy. He said he would "pull out of NAFTA in a split second" if Mexico and Canada didn"t agree to renegotiate on terms much more favorable to the U.S., and suggested America has no place telling countries like Turkey to respect human rights, because "when the world sees how bad the United States is ... I don"t think we are a very good messenger." Trump also said that if Russia attacked NATO allies Latvia, Lithuania, or Estonia, he would come to their defense only after looking at whether they "have fulfilled their obligations to us," financially and otherwise. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg responded Thursday, emphasizing the importance of "solidarity among allies" and noting that "two world wars have shown that peace in Europe is also important for the security of the United States."
