There Is Nothing Wrong With Asking Tom Hardy About Sexuality

Tom Hardy Legend Interview Sexuality Question TIFF 2015 Press Conference Gets Shutdown, MySpace Leak

Tom Hardys sexual orientation has made headlines in the past. Now, his refusal to talk about talking about sexuality is causing a stir. It shouldnt.

On Sunday, at a press conference at the Toronto International Film Festival for Hardys new movie Legend, in which Hardy plays a gay man, reporter Graeme Coleman from the LGBT news outlet Daily Xtra asked Hardy: Do you find it hard for celebrities to talk to media about their sexuality? After an awkward back-and-forth, Hardy shut down the question with Thank you.

Digg posted the video with the headline Tom Hardy Has The Perfect Answer To Reporter Asking Him About His Sexuality. But if anything this should make Hardy look bad, not the reporter.

There is nothing embarrassing about being gay. There is nothing dirty or taboo about it. Asking someone if he or she is gay is the equivalent of asking if they are married, if they were raised Christian, of if they have a bachelors degree. It is a factual question. Just because being gay affects who a person has s*x with, this is not a question about his or her s*x life. Its not asking about which sexual positions a person prefers or how often they m********e. Those are, of course, personal matters that should never be asked about (unless by a very close friend at a boozy brunch).

The reason why some people dont want to askboth at press conferences and at cocktail partiesis because there is still that little lingering doubt in the back of their minds that there is something wrong with homosexuality. If you ask someone whether he or she is gay, and he or she is not, they should not feel badly about themselves or about you.

Gay people are, in most cases, happy to tell you that they are gay. Straight people hardly ever get asked whether theyre straight or gay and might be taken aback by the question, but they seem to never have a problem setting the record straight. (Asking how much someone makes or how much they spent on a dress, however, is still off limits.)

Regardless, these questions are especially relevant given Hardys past statements and his role in this movie. In 2008, while Hardy was promoting another movie in which he played a gay man, British gay lifestyle magazine Attitude quoted him saying Ive played with everything and everyone. Hardy later denied that he ever had s*x with men and said he was misquoted. In Legend, Hardy plays both Reggie and Ronnie Kray, twin British gangsters. Ronnie is known to have been gay, and recent reports claim that both brothers were bisexual.

Thats likely why the reporter asked about Hardys sexual orientation. Its the same reason why a reporter might ask the man playing Jesus in a TV movie whether or not he was raised Christian. It doesnt question his competence as an actor, but it does have relevance to what sort of personal experiences he brings to the role.

I get why Hardy is upset with the inquirythe question has been asked and answered. We dont need to ask Neil Patrick Harris or Wanda Sykes about their sexuality for every role they play. The issue is that the question is whether Hardy finds it hard for celebrities to talk about their sexuality, and Hardy says no when everything about his response seems to say the opposite.

Those who are celebrating Hardys response seem to think that keeping people from asking about sexual orientation is helping end homophobia. Its just the opposite, in fact. It further convinces people that being gay (or even asking if someone is gay) is something shameful that needs to be hidden. Its not.

A more honest, interesting answer would have gone something like this:

Yes, I do find it hard to discuss sexuality as a celebrity. I made some comments that were misquoted by a magazine and ever since then questions about my sexuality always pop up. I am straight. It just shows how obsessed we are, as a culture, with gay people and gay s*x. Who we sleep with doesnt matter, and I wish that this matter could be closed for good rather than being brought up at every opportunity for mere titillations sake.

That would have been the perfect answer, but Hardy unfortunately didnt give it.

In September 2014, rumors spread that Herbert was physically abusive to Braxton. During an interview, she admitted that she had been "in a really abusive relationship before," but insisted that Herbert had never put a hand on her.

On Dec. 4, 1988, Gary Busey was involved in a nearly fatal motorcycle after her crashed and wasn"t wearing a helmet. After being in a coma for over four weeks, Busy awoke. Busey left the hospital five weeks after that. "almost no one expected me to recover," the 71-year-old actor has said.

In 1995, Busey overdose on cocaine. "Cocaine was my devil that I danced with in my life," he said. "The devil has been sent away and now I dance with nothing but angels." Busey hasn"t used cocaine in nearly 20 years now.

Busey"s bad luck struck again when he started suffering recurring nosebleeds and had to undergo surgery in 1997 to remove massive cancerous tumor from his sinus cavity. The cancer required him to get facial reconstruction and 35 radiation treatments. He"s still alive!

In 1996, Busey publically claimed to be a Christian. "I am proud to tell Hollywood I am a Christian," he said. "For the first time I am now free to be myself." Busey attrinuted his conversion to his addiction recovery and crash. He joined a group called the Promise Keepers and was ordained a preacher.

Busey"s second wife, Tiani, who once made her money as an exotic dancer, accused him of abuse two times. He was put in jail after one fight at their house in Malibu, but Tiani never filed charges. They got divorced in 2000.

Busey married his first wife and college sweetheart, Judy, in 1968, but they divorced after a son and 20 years together.

Busey also had a daughter out of wedlock with his girlfriend Tracy Hutchinson.

In the midst of his battle with cancer, a United Airlines flight attendant said that Busey hit her on a plane. Busey claimed she startled him. The lady wasn"t injured and didn"t file charges. Busey later apologized to her after being questioned by police.

In 2012, Nick Carter"s sister Leslie passed away after an alleged prescription drug overdose. Carter didn"t attend his sister"s funeral because of a family feud, but did say, "There are so many emotions for me surrounding the loss of my sister. I am trying to stay healthy, positive, and focused."

Carter claimed in his memoir that he had his first drink when he was 2 years old. "Family legend has it that when I was two years old, I crawled into one of the Yankee Rebel"s liquor storage rooms where I was caught drinking for the first time," he said. "My parents always laughed at that. I laughed too, for a while, and then I didn"t laugh at it any more."

Carter said he went to rehab at Promises Malibu while still drunk and on cocaine, but after a tour and interview, he decided to try rehab on his own.

In January 2002, Carter was arrested on suspicion of refusing to follow police orders to exit a nightclub. The misdemeanor charges were eventually dropped.

In 2013, Paula Deen"s former employee Lisa Jackson who worked at Deen"s restaurant Uncle Bubba"s Seafood and Oyster House sued the celebrity chef saying she suffered from sexual harassment and racial discrimination. The discrimination suit was dropped and both parties reached an agreement.

But during a deposition for the lawsuit, Deen admitted to making racial comments and using the "n-word," allowing racial jokes and condoning p**n at work. This caused the Food Network to say they wouldn"t renew her contract.

Court docs: Father slammed infant on mattress, killing her

DOCS: House Of Agoraphobics - Ep 1

FRANKLIN, Ind. (WISH) A Franklin man has been charged in the death of his seven-month-old daughter.

20-year-old Michael Potts has been charged in the case.

Court documents state that Potts slammed his infant daughter Felicity on a mattress while he was upset.

Family members had previously told 24-Hour News 8 that Potts slammed the child against a wall.

An autopsy revealed that the baby had skull fractures.

Potts faces a level 2 felony charge of battery resulting in death.

Seahawks Rookie Tyler Lockett Takes the Rams First Punt to the House | Seahawks vs. Rams | NFL

The Seattle Seahawks and St. Louis Rams will get NFC West hostilities underway on Sunday.

The Seattle Seahawks are set to take on the St. Louis Rams for an early leg-up in the NFC West in Week 1. Seattle took the division last season, edging out the Arizona Cardinals, soundly beating the San Francisco 49ers and the Rams ... well, the Rams weren"t really in the picture much at all.

But it"s a new season, and both teams have made strides to improve over the course of the offseason. St. Louis finished last season with a 6-10 record, but the Rams got a new starting quarterback, a new starting running back, a new offensive line and a defense that"s looking like it could be dominant on its best days.

Still, the big story of this game is Seahawks safety Kam Chancellor and his contract holdout. Chancellor started holding out for a new deal in training camp, missed all of preseason and has not practiced with the team at all leading up to Sunday"s game. The Seahawks were practicing as though Chancellor was injured and don"t expect him to play on Sunday.

Chancellor is one of the top safeties in the NFL, and while the Seahawks have a secondary that also features Earl Thomas and Richard Sherman -- players with legitimate claim to being the best players at their position -- having to play without Chancellor would change things significantly.

Fortunately for the Seahawks, the Rams aren"t looking like a team set to test any secondary, let alone one that features Sherman and Thomas. Still, the Rams are something of a question mark on offense with new quarterback Nick Foles. They traded Sam Bradford for Foles and some draft picks this offseason, and while Bradford has looked better than Foles in the NFL, he also has a massive injury history.

Foles went 15-9 as a starter in three seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, though he also sustained injuries with them. But two years ago, Foles threw 27 touchdowns with just two interceptions and it"s safe to say the Rams are hoping that"s the guy that winds up under center for them this season. He has essentially the toughest test in the NFL ahead of him, so a poor performance isn"t confirmation that everything is on fire for the Rams, but a good game would do so much for the offense and the confidence of this team.

That said, Foles does not currently suffer from an overabundance of receiving targets. Brian Quick and Kenny Britt are Foles" starting receivers, with Tavon Austin and Stedman Bailey behind them. Tight end Jared Cook will likely get the most targets if the Rams can exploit a matchup, but this certainly isn"t an ideal situation for Foles.

As noted, the team also has a new running back in Todd Gurley, a first-round rookie. Unfortunately for St. Louis, Gurley is out for this game with a knee injury -- he"s still recovering from a torn ACL suffered in college -- and Tre Mason also has an injury. That means Benny Cunningham and Isaiah Pead will likely get the majority of the carries against a Seattle defensive front that isn"t quite as good as its secondary, but is still plenty fearsome.

St. Louis will likely find most of its success in this game coming from the defensive side of the ball. The Rams have an absolutely ridiculous offensive line, featuring Robert Quinn, Chris Long, Aaron Donald, Michael Brockers and free agent acquisition Nick Fairley. That line will be tasked with stopping Marshawn Lynch and containing Russell Wilson, and If they can halt Seattle"s offensive production and keep this a low-scoring game, they might be able to pull out an upset.

Thousands under order to flee Valley fire in Lake County; four firefighters burned

MIDDLETOWN A terrifying wildfire exploded Saturday through woodland communities in southern Lake County, forcing thousands to flee their homes and sending four firefighters to the hospital with second-degree burns.

Saturdays raging flames destroyed scores of structures and placed the county, already the stage for four major wildfires this summer, under renewed siege. Some evacuees were cut off from escape routes, while others abandoned their cars to burn on roadways. Hundreds of firefighters streamed into the area to battle the blaze, which grew from 50 acres to more than 10,000 acres in the span of five hours Saturday. It doubled in size again over the next four hours, swelling to 25,000 acres by 10:25p.m.

By 10 p.m., the flames were burning homes, apartments and commercial buildings in Middletown, home to more than 1,300 people. Firefighters made a stand at the towns high school, knocking down a fire that started to burn the main building.
