Wimbledon Champs Could Lose Almost $400000, Thanks to Brexit

Live@Wimbledon 2016 – Day 1

Wimbledon, one of the years most important tennis tournaments, got underway in London today, just days after the host country voted to leave the European Union.

The Brexic vote sent seismic shocks through the global financial markets while causing the value of the British pound to plummet more than 10%. The decline comes at an especially unfortunate time for the worlds top tennis players; they now face the prospect of a devalued pot of Wimbledon prize money at the end of a two-week run at the All England Club.

Wimbledons hosts had announced that this years tournament will pay out a record 28.1 million in prize money to the winners in various categories this year, but the value of that record payout is now more than 11% lower in the wake of Britains EU exit.

The winners of the mens and womens tournaments at Wimbledon will earn 2 million prizesbut after the pounds drop-off, the earnings will be worth roughly $2.64 million, based on the value of the pound when markets closed on Monday. The same amount would have been worth more than $3 million in U.S. dollars before last weeks Brexit referendum.

As point of reference, that means this years Wimbledon champions will make less money than Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams took home for winning their respective categories last year. Last years singles winners were awarded roughly $2.8 million apiece.

The value of sterling on Monday was at a new 31-year low of $1.322 against the dollar. Whats more, there is little hope of the value of sterling rebounding significantly this year, much less before the end of the two-week Grand Slam tournament. Investors are now extremely wary of the British currency, betting that the Bank of England will cut interest rates in coming months, while ratings agencies Standard & Poors and Fitch both downgraded the countrys credit rating on Monday.

Of course, the Wimbledon winners are still getting a decent payday and, fortunately, the All England Club had already opted to give the singles champions a raise of about 6.4% from last year, so that takes away some of the sting.

And with Andres Iniesta excelling and Alvaro Morata regularly scoring, the defeat to Croatia should not leave a mark. Italy will hope the same applies to them after making lots of changes for the loss to the Republic of Ireland.

With few impressing, the original lot will come back to try and find the level they did against Belgium. With three familiar stalwarts at the back for Antonio Conte, Italy may sit deep to try and frustrate.

BET Awards had great moments but Jesse Williams" speech won the night

Jesse Williams Gives Must-See Speech At 2016 BET Awards - Justin Timberlake Faces Twitter Backlash

The BET Awards or The Prince Tribute Show featured emotional and energetic performances from Sheila E., Stevie Wonder and Jennifer Hudson honoring the Purple One, along with political statements on issues ranging from racial injustice to the U.S. presidential election.

Sheila E., jamming on the drums and guitar, singing and dancing without shoes, closed the three-hour-plus show at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles with Lets Work, A Love Bizarre, The Glamorous Life, America and more. She was joined by Princes ex-wife, Mayte Garcia, who danced alongside the background dancers throughout the set. They ended by raising a purple guitar in the air as the audience cheered them on.

Hudson, rocking a white-hooded blazer, and Wonder, clad in a purple suit, sang Purple Rain a month after the piano-playing icon performed the song with Madonna at the Billboard Music Awards, which BET dissed on Twitter. This time, Hudson was a vocal powerhouse, delivering screeching vocals while Wonder played piano and Tori Kelly was on guitar while a photo montage of Prince appeared on the purple-lit stage.

Janelle Monae was animated and funky as she danced skillfully and ran through Prince tunes, including Kiss, Delirious and I Would Die 4 U. Bilal was sensual and passionate during The Beautiful Ones, even lying on the floor while singing near the end of the performance. The Roots backed Bilal, and the band was also behind Erykah Badu as she performed The Ballad of Dorothy Parker, singing softly as she grooved in place.

After singing an original song, Maxwell went into Nothing Compares 2 U, changing some of the lyrics while honoring Prince.

Though the BET Awards were heavy on honoring the icon who died on April 21, the show went from Prince to political throughout the night.

Greys Anatomy actor Jesse Williams, who earned the humanitarian award for his efforts as an activist, gave a fiery, nearly six-minute speech that brought the audience to its feet and earned a rousing applause.

Were done watching and waiting while this invention called whiteness uses and abuses us, burying black people out of sight and out of mind while extracting our culture, our dollars, our entertainment like oil, black gold, ghettoizing and demeaning our creations then stealing them; gentrifying our genius and trying us on like costumes before discarding our bodies, he said onstage.

Williams was introduced by BET CEO Debra Lee, who spoke about gun violence and brought up the recent Orlando shooting at the Pulse nightclub.

We all need to take stance against gun violence. You can make a difference, Lee said onstage. Use your voice and vote.

When Empire star Taraji P. Henson won best actress, she encouraged the audience to vote against presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.

Im really not political but its serious out here, and for those who thing that, you know, Oh hes not going to win think again. So we really need to pull together and turn this country around, she said.

Co-host Tracee Ellis Ross said she was supporting Hillary Clinton and reminded viewers several times to get yourself registered! Clinton has a past with BET: She appeared at BETs Black Girls Rock! event in April and told the audience my life has been changed by strong black women leaders.

The BET Awards wasnt all serious, though. Beyonce kicked off the show with a surprise performance featuring Kendrick Lamar and multiple background dancers of her song Freedom, dancing in a pool of water to the songs heavy beat. At one point, Lamar and Beyonc kicked the water and danced in sync, drawing a heavy applause from the audience.

Beyonce won video of the year and the fan-voted viewers choice award for her hit, Formation. Her mother, Tina, accepted the awards and said Beyonce had to quickly leave the show after her performance for a concert in London.

I want to thank, first of all, her husband and her daughter, Tina said onstage.

Alicia Keys slowed things down with a performance of In Common; Fat Joe, Remy Ma and French Montana were energetic during All the Way Up; and Desiigner was excited as he rapped Panda onstage and in the middle of the aisles, as most of the audience nodded and sang along.

Beyoncs mentees, the duo Chloe x Halle, earned a standing ovation after they sang impressively and played instruments.

Rising newcomer Bryson Tiller also performed. In a surprise win, the singer won best male R&B/pop artist, besting Chris Brown, The Weeknd, Tyrese and Jeremih. Tiller also won best new artist.

Thank G*d, thank my mommy, thank my granny. This is my first award ever, Tiller said, who was also nominated for video of the year.

Drake, who didnt attend the show though he was the top contender with nine nominations, won best male hip hop artist and best group with rapper-singer-producer Future.

Samuel L. Jackson received the lifetime achievement award and was introduced by Spike Lee. Jackson ended his speech by offering praise to Williams, calling him the closest thing Ive heard to a 1960s activist.

That brother is right and hes true, and when you hear what he said, make sure you vote and you take eight more people with you to vote, OK? Jackson said. Dont get tricked like they got tricked in London!

Prince wasnt the only icon honored Sunday Muhammad Ali was remembered by his daughter and Jamie Foxx.

To me and my eight sisters and brothers, he was just dad, Laila Ali said onstage. My father also once said, If people loved each other as much as they loved me, it would be a better world."

Foxx said Ali stood up at a time when no one was standing up. So its definitely more than boxing, more than entertainment.

Ali died June 3 after a long battle with Parkinsons disease.

Top Gear: Who will take over if Chris Evans or Matt LeBlanc quit?

Last Dance with Chris Evans and Elizabeth Olsen

One of the lesser-known members of the new Top Gear line-up could take the reins if either Matt LeBlanc or Chris Evans quits at the end of the season, the Daily Telegraph says.

According to a report in The Sun, former Friends star LeBlanc has vowed to leave unless the BBC drops Evans.

"Sources on the crisis-hit programme say Matt has grown increasingly frustrated with his co-star"s rudeness and frosty attitude towards the team," the paper says.

The actor delivered "a crushing ultimatum by announcing he will have no part in any future series that features Chris", it adds.

If one or the other of the two leads does quit, new host Chris Harris is in "pole position" to step up, the Telegraph says.

"He knows what he"s talking about, he presents it to laymen and experts (including this writer - can"t you tell?) accessibly and entertainingly, and is a commanding screen presence throughout. Like fellow new presenters [Rory]Reid and [Sabine]Schmitz, he"s also hugely popular with viewers."

While Harris may not yet have the star power to lead the show, something has to change given the show"s plummeting viewing figures, the paper concludes.

Top Gear continues this Sunday on BBC2.

Top Gear: Is the BBC considering axing the show?

20 June

Bookmakers are offering revised odds on the prospect of Top Gear being axed after the latest episode received its lowest audience in ten years.Betway quotes newly-lowered odds of 5/4 for the BBC pulling the plug on the show once this series ends. It also offers 2/1 odds on the chances of co-host Matt LeBlanc returning, suggesting that his involvement in Top Gear may be "in the balance," the Daily Mirror says.

The show"s audience has shrunk significantly since Jeremy Clarkson was dropped as host last year for punching a colleague in the face in a dispute over catering. The appointment of Chris Evans as his replacement has not been well received by fans and ratings have slid to a ten-year low.

Co-presenter Eddie Jordan has offered his support for the new host and says he believes the show will gradually become more popular under its current team than it was with Clarkson and co-hosts James May and Richard Hammond.

"Chris has done a brilliant job in difficult circumstances," Jordan said. "He has got to find something inside, like we used to urge our racing drivers. We used to want them to become more arrogant.

"That is what Chris needs to find - he has got to arrogantly believe this programme will be better, will be better run, will be more diverse and different... It will be a must-watch show."

Top Gear continues on Sunday on BBC Two at 8pm.

Top Gear: The real reason Matt LeBlanc took the BBC job

16 June

Matt LeBlanc has revealed the real reason he took up his new gig as host of Top Gear he needed work.

Speaking to James Corden on The Late, Late Show, the actor said His comedy series Episodes was "coming to an end and I needed a job.

"So I said, "Ok, why not?"" joked the presenter.

LeBlanc also told the audience that US drivers were better than Brits.

"The roads here are so much wider and bigger, but in the UK and London the roads are so narrow because they were built for horses and carts," he said.

"So in the US, if you make a mistake and get a bit wide, you maybe hit a tree or some bushes. Over in the UK, you go offline? You hit a thousand-year-old church".

British star Corden appeared on Top Gear in 2008, as part of the "Star in a Reasonably Priced Car" segment. "I did not do well," he told LeBlanc.

"Come back and do it again," said the actor. "It"s a new track and now it"s a rally car."

LeBlanc has won praise for Top Gear, but it"s been reported that he and co-host Chris Evans will be taking a diminished role in the rest of the series. Instead, motoring journalists Rory Reid and Chris Harris, who usually host the online spin-off show, Extra Gear, will be taking bigger roles, reports the Daily Telegraph.

Both men received good reviews for their presenting in the most recent episode of the main show. Reid, who won his slot on the show via a public audition, was shown testing the new Ford Focus RS, while Harris, who has a cult following on YouTube, featured in a film involving Ferraris F12 TDF.

Evans and Matt LeBlanc will continue to anchor the studio recording, the paper adds, but it is understood that pre-recorded material featuring the two lesser-known presenters will feature more prominently in the rest of the series.

Reid seemed to confirm this on Twitter in a conversation with a viewer.

Top Gear: Chris Evans will get another season, bookmakers say

14 June

Chris Evans"s rebooted Top Gear may have slipped to a new ratings low on Sunday, but according to bookmakers, it is more than likely that the show will be renewed by the BBC.

Odds have shifted in favour of a second season, the Daily Mirror reports. It is now 1/2 that there will be another series and 6/4 that it will be cancelled.

"Top Gear punters have been won over and there could be a complete turnaround on the cards," Alex Donohue of Ladbrokes said.

"They are now banking on the new set-up lasting longer than one series."

Ratings continued their slide over the weekend, with the third episode attractingjust 2.4 million viewers, a 10.4 per cent share of the overall viewing public. The first episode had been watched by 4.3 million viewers, while the second slipped to 2.8 million.

Despite the shrinking audience, the episode garnered much more positive reviews than the first two outings.

"The inclusion of presenterChris Evans being sick after being driven around at high speed by co-presenter Sabine Schmitz and Matt LeBlanc"shigh-speed tour of the capital appears to have won over those who watched the show," the Daily Telegraph said.

The response on Twitter was "generally more favourable," The Guardian said, but it was still not enough to "turn around its overnight ratings slide."

Top Gear continues on Sunday night on BBC2.

Chris Evans photographed drinking alone after huge Top Gear ratings drop

10 June

Following months of negative newspaper coverage followed by falling ratings for his new-look Top Gear, Chris Evans has been photographed sitting alone in the street drinking wine.

"The 50-year-old was pictured necking a glass of wine as he sat slumped against a wall near his London home," reports the Daily Mail, which has been responsible for some of the most hostile articles about the presenter"s takeover of the show.

Apparently oblivious to the fact he was being photographed, Evans "took a call on his mobile phone before parking himself against the crumbling white wall of what appeared to be an abandoned warehouse just feet from overflowing rubbish bins."

The first episode of Top Gear achieved an average audience of 4.3 million viewers, just shy of Evans"s ambition for the show, but the second episode saw its audience decline massively, with 2.8 million watching.

Evans has defended the statistics on Twitter and argued that viewing patterns have changed with the advent of on-demand television, which allows people to watch shows later rather than tuning in live.

Fans of the former Top Gear presenting line-up have been particularly vitriolic about the new host. This week, Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond put out videos of themselves opening and folding boxes in a tie-up with logistics company DHL, which many fans declared were "better than the new Top Gear".

In an interview with Buzzfeed this week, Evans insisted that nothing was wrong with the revamped show and that its critics simply didn"t understand television.

"I find it hilarious that people who have never made a show in their lives then presume what is wrong with the making of a television programme," he said. "Everyone is entitled to their opinions, of course they are those people have a loudhailer and that"s fine - and by the way, bring it on. That"s what I expected."

He added that he has received plenty of positive feedback and "that enough people like it and love it, actually".

He also urged fans to be patient, The Independent says, as "a single hour slot every week means it takes time for audiences to get used to change within its structure".

"In the first week of a radio show changing, there"s 15 hours of the new bloke," Evans said. "In a TV show, there"s one show every seven days, so it takes a lot more getting used to."

Top Gear continues on BBC Two on Sunday at 8pm.

Top Gear: Could Chris Evans be replaced?

6 June

Another episode of Top Gear, another evening of stinging criticism.

Following complaints that he had shouted too much in the first episode, new host Chris Evans promised last night that he would get "even more shouty".

The move prompted some fans to call for the presenter to be sacked in favour of F1 racing driver Jenson Button, who made an appearance on the show putting a McLaren 675LT supercar through its paces.

Despite the enthusiasm for Button, some fans said it is unlikely the BBC would be able to afford him.

While Evans"s hosting style has had a generally poor reception, Top Gear fans have begun to warm to fellow presenter Matt LeBlanc, the Daily Mail says, "with many taking to Twitter to praise his presenting style and comment on how likeable he was".

The Daily Telegraph suggests that rapper Tinie Tempah, who also appeared in last night"s show, could be lined up as a possible co-host.

"Who would have thought that a Hollywood star and a Brixton rapper would have such a great rapport?" the paper says. "Maybe he"s ready to swap professions and join Matt on the presenting team? The pair certainly seem to have more chemistry than Matt and Evans do at the moment."

Leaked audience data reveals the BBC received 370 complaints about the first episode of the new show, making it the "worst programme on terrestrial television" in its opening weekend.

The data showed the programme had an appreciation index of 60, which is considered poor given that the average rating for BBC Two programmes over the same weekend was 82.

So far, the BBC has stuck by the show"s new host, with a spokesperson saying the first episode had good ratings when iPlayer views were taken into account.

"Chris and Matt kicked off in style and viewing figures have been growing steadily since broadcast," the spokesperson said.

Top Gear continues on BBC Two on Sunday.

Ariel Winter Slams Body Shamers And Confirms She"s Single

Ariel Winter On Breast Reduction Surgery, "Modern Family" Fame | EXCLUSIVE

Modern Family star Ariel Winter has been the target of body shamers on a few occasions now and the most recent episode came when the actress posted a picture of herself prepared for her graduation party in a skin-bearing, figure-hugging dress.

After receiving numerous comments in response to the attire via her social media account, Winter took to Twitter to shut down the haters. ET Online shares the words of the star.

Dear sorry body-shamers, I looked HOT in that dress. And if you hate it, dont buy it. But please get a hobby. XOXO Ariel #EmbraceYourBody, Winter tweeted on Wednesday.

Following the post to Twitter, Ariel took to Instagram where she simply posted a pic that reminded followers and fans to embrace who they are.

Own who you are.

As the publication shares, this isnt the first time that the actress has been the subject of body shaming. Winter spoke with ET in March and felt the need to defend a gown she had worn to the SAG Awards back in January. The gown showed off scars from Winters breast-reduction surgery that she underwent last year.

If I didnt think about them myself, clearly Im not ashamed of them. I dont know why anybody would be. Theyre not going away.

Ariel continues being bold in her fashion choices, and she looks fantastic doing so. On Friday, the 18-year-old took to social media once more where she posted a pic of herself wearing a tiny pair of daisy duke shorts and crop top that had Burt Reynolds face on it. Burt will co-star with the beauty in the movie Dog Years. The duo began filming the upcoming movie that has been described as a dark comedy in Knoxville, Tennessee, 2 weeks ago.

Ariel also used her social media site to confirm that shes definitely single and ready to mingle, by using a gif involving Kim Kardashian. Us Weekly relays the message sent by Winter.

When youre surprised that people just havent gotten it yet she wrote, along with a gif of Kardashian, 35, saying, Im like dropping hints that Im single.

The teen, who had been with boyfriend Laurent Claude Gaudette for some time, has, previous to this incident, posted a number of status updates hinting that she and Gaudette may have split; but, this is the first time that the actress has confirmed the news.

Back in October, the teen shared her initial reaction when she saw Gaudette, and what inspired her to connect with him.

It was kind of like I saw him, and I was like, I would like to get to know him. And I did! Im very outgoing, so I kind of initiated the, Hi, Im here! Its nice to meet you."

By December, it started to appear as though the two were taking some space for themselves and possibly going their separate ways. The two met in 2013 and went strong for 2 years. Winter and Gaudette have, since their split, stopped following one another on social media. However, the producer, singer and songwriter still follows Winters sister, Shanelle Workman, and co-star Rico Rodriguez.

As the Daily Mail shares, Winter isnt just a beautiful face, she also has brains to complement her beauty. The star graduated from Campbell Hall School alongside celeb Elle Fanning. Shell continue her education at UCLA this fall and eventually plans on becoming a social justice lawyer.

In January, the star spoke about why she chose the program she did.

Social justice just feels like it fits for me,. I want to continue acting and also go to law school. I think the more knowledge you have, can only better your life.

To Wimbledon Wild Card, Life Feels Lifted From a Hollywood Script

Live@Wimbledon 2016 – Day 1
Photo Marcus Willis in a Wimbledon qualifying match he won against Andrey Rublev of Russia on Wednesday. Credit Justin Setterfield/Getty Images

WIMBLEDON, England Wimbledon, a movie released 12 years ago, was a romantic comedy about a British tennis player on the verge of retirement who finds love, and then unlikely success at the tournament.

Over the past four months, Marcus Willis, a 25-year-old from Slough, England, has starred in a real-life version of the film, all but re-enacting its implausible plot points on the way to his unlikely spot in the Wimbledon main draw, scheduled to begin Monday.

Willis, ranked 775th before the qualifying tournament, had nearly given up on his dreams of reaching Wimbledon and was planning to move to Philadelphia, where offers of coaching jobs were waiting.

I was adamant I was going to go to America to coach, Willis said. I had called up someone about the visa and then I met a girl. She basically told me I was an idiot and that I should keep going, and Im very grateful for that.

Shortly before he had planned to leave in February, Willis met Jennifer Bate, a dentist and a mother of two. Bate said she was out on the town with a cousin as each tried to shake off wrong relationships that had just ended.

We just met, and honestly, it was a blur after that, Bate said. We went on a little walk to get some fresh air before wed get a cab. He said, Im meant to be going to America soon, and I was like: What? You cant go to America. The night we met, I said, Youve just met me; you cant just move to America. I said it jokingly, and then he told me he was a tennis player. I thought, Yeah, right, whatever.

After experiencing what she called love at first sight, Bate rushed home to tell her mother she had met the one, and Willis postponed his plans to leave England. With Bates encouragement, Willis rededicated himself to tennis, despite having endured injuries and financial hardships in recent years. In 2014, struggling with touring expenses, Willis had started a crowdfunding campaign seeking support in getting to his childhood dream tournament.

In 2016, he had played only one event, a January tournament in Tunisia at the lowest rung of sanctioned professional tennis, earning just $356. But his falling ATP ranking was just high enough to get him the last direct entry into a Wimbledon qualifying wild-card playoffs for British players. Once there, he won three matches to reach the tournaments main qualifying event.

Though British wild cards often prove to be overmatched cannon fodder in the qualifying tournament, Willis played with confidence. In his first match, against the 99th-ranked Yuichi Sugita, Willis came back from losing the first set, 6-1, to notch his first career victory over a top-100 opponent. With his unorthodox left-handed barrage of chunked slices and serve-and-volley, Willis continued his winning ways in the next two matches, beating the Russians Andrey Rublev and Daniil Medvedev and becoming the first British player to reach the Wimbledon singles main draw through qualifying since 2008. By doing so, he guaranteed himself prize money of at least 30,000 British pounds.

Andy Murray, who ended 77 years without a British mens singles champion at Wimbledon when he won here in 2013, had practiced with Willis at the Davis Cup years earlier and called Williss qualifying a really cool story.

Hes an awkward player, has got quite a different sort of game style, Murray said. Serve-and-volleys a little bit. Hes got really good touch, good volleys, puts a lot of slice on his slice backhand, quite a spinny forehand. Hes quite an unusual player.

Those unnerving, unconventional weapons were on display when Willis made his previous best career run, to the quarterfinals of a Challenger-level tournament in Knoxville, Tenn., in 2014. There, Willis also gained notice for his tubby physique, which inspired one Facebook heckler to call him Cartman, after Eric Cartman, the corpulent cartoon 10-year-old from South Park.

Willis embraced the nickname, and while he is still bulkier than many in the sport, he has dropped 55 pounds. He still readily pokes fun at himself.

Its good banter; I enjoy it, he said.

If he wins his opening-round match Monday against the 53rd-ranked Ricardas Berankis on Court 17, a possible second-round encounter with the seven-time champion Roger Federer looms.

His weekend at Wimbledon playing among the games best I saw Djokovic earlier, and my jaw dropped; Im going to act cool and pretend its all normal now, he said has proved equally invigorating.

Im delighted, but it makes me realize I want it week in, week out now, he said. Ive got to keep working, keep my head down, and get on with it.

Bate, who was unable to cancel her Monday dental patients appointments, will follow his first-round match from afar. She said she believed she would have many more opportunities to watch Willis continue toward a Hollywood ending.

Something in his mind has just clicked, and hes ready now, she said. Hes taking it all in, and hes got plenty more in him.
