Green Bay Packers position preview: safeties

Safeties are the last resort for defenses. Sometimes they are the only playerskeeping an offensive playerfrom scoring. They can cover wide receivers and they can bring down the toughest of running backs. Luckily, the Green Bay Packers havea pair of very talented safeties that can do it all.

Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, the starter at full safety, has been one of the best players on the Packers defense in his two years with the team. Hes totaled 192 total tackles over two seasons while also contributing four sacks, three interceptions, and nine pass deflections. Hesa safety that can make plays no matter where he is on the field. Clinton-Dix has shown his abilities as a ball hawk over the past two seasons, so look for him to make more big plays against the pass.

Morgan Burnett

Morgan Burnett, the starting strong safety,is the second oldest player in the secondary. Hes been the steady and consistent player the Packers have needed over the past six seasons. Burnett isnt a ball hawk as much as Clinton-Dix is, but he can tackle. Hes had over 100 tackles in three of his six seasons. He would probably have gotten more than 100 tackles last season if it wasntfor an injury that took him out of the regular season for five games. Burnett will be an importantdefender against the run this season.

Micah Hyde

Micah Hyde is the versatile player on the Packers defense. He can play as a cornerback and he can play as a safety. Last season he started five games for aninjured Morgan Burnett and he played well. h**l probably start the season as a backup for the safeties, but Hyde will alsobe used at multiple positions in different defensive formations throughout the season.

The backups

Chris Banjo is the main backup for the safeties. He can be used for either safety position, and we will see him play a few snaps throughout the season, but he will mainly be used for the special teams unit. RookiesKentrell Brice, Marwin Evans, and newly signed Jermaine Whitehead round out the rest of the safeties. These guys will probably also be used for the special teams unit.

American Michelle Carter upset favorite Valerie Adams of New Zealand to win gold in theshot put at the Rio Summer Olympics Friday night.

Carter, the daughter of Olympian and three-time Super Bowl champion Michael Carter, went yard with a 20.63-meter final throw to win the United States" first medal in the women"s shot put sinceEarlene Brown won bronze in1960.

It also dethronedtwo-time defending champion Adams, who was looking to be the first woman to win three consecutive Olympic shot put titles.

Anita Marton of Hungary won bronze.

Katie Ledecky Wins Gold 800m Freestyle Rio Olympics 2016 (World Record)

Katie Ledecky ended her Rio Games by crushing the field in the 800-meter freestyle, winning by an astonishing 11.38 seconds. In beating Jazz Carlin of Britain, she added another individual gold medal to the ones she won in the 200- and 400-meter freestyle races.

In the 800, 11.38 seconds is an eternity. Its enough time to get bored. Its an awkwardly long hug. Historically, its the second-largest margin of victory in the 800-meter freestyle: Debbie Meyer won by 11.7 seconds in 1968. Ledecky nearly matched that margin, but she did it at a much faster speed her time was about 80 seconds faster than Meyers was in Mexico City.

The tables below show just how long the winner had to wait for the silver medalist to finish in each of these freestyle events.

In the 400- and 800-meter freestyle, Ledecky is racing at world-record speeds and beating her opponents by larger margins than her predecessors did decades earlier.

In the closest finish of her three individual finals, Ledecky won by only 35 hundredths of a second, barely edging out Sarah Sjostrom of Sweden.

Ledecky beat her own world record by nearly two seconds, finishing in a blistering 3 minutes 56.46 seconds. Her final 50 meters was covered in only 28.92. I just let it all out, she said.

In her final Rio race, Ledecky broke her own world record and left her opponents far, far behind, winning by nearly half a pool length.

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) Theres a live action film for the familiesand an animated movie thats for adults only hitting theaters this weekend.

A live action Disney classic from the 1970s is once again soaring on the big screen. Petes Dragon tells the story of an orphaned boy who says he has spent the last six years living with his friend Elliott the dragon. The original featured an animated dragon, this one uses state of the art computer effects to bring Elliott to life. The action adventure stars Bryce Dallas Howard and Robert Redford. Its rated PG.

From the studio behind cloudy with a chance of meatballs comes the new animated adventure Sausage Party. A word to parents, though, this is not a kids movie. Its an adult-themed take on the plight of hot dogs and other food in a grocery store days ahead of the Independence Day holiday. Written by Seth Rogen, he also lends his voice along with Kristin Wiig and Jonah Hill. Its rated R.

Florence Foster Jenkins is based on the true story of a well-to-do heiress in the 1940s who donated piles of money to music societies. Played by Meryl Streep, she parlayed her giving into the chance to sing opera. Theres only one problem, she had a horrible singing voice. The period comedy costars Hugh grant. Its ratedPG-13.
