Nikki Hamblin helped her up to Abbey D"Agostino who was injured in the test female 5000 meters
It"s nice to be important but more important to be nice at the Olympic Games.
As competitions continued in a variety of sports Tuesday from Rio, one event grabbed the attention of fans around the world.
During the women"s 5000-meter race, Abby D"Agostino and Nikki Hamblin collided on the track. But in a true show of sportsmanship, the ladies seemingly sacrificed any chance at an Olympic medal to pick each other up and push each other to complete the race.
Four and a half laps later and the pair defied expectations and reached the finish line.
"That girl is the Olympic spirit right there. I am so impressed and inspired," Nikki shared with reporters after the race. "I had never met her, isn"t that so amazing? It is a moment that I will never ever forget for the rest of my life."
While both runners ultimately advanced through the final, Abby also received medical treatment leaving some uncertainly as to whether or not she will return to the track.
Ultimately, both Abby and Nikki received a show of support from around their world for their determination and kindness. And perhaps these ladies earned a prize that can"t be compared to any Olympics medal.
"Everyone wants to win and get a medal, but as disappointing as it is, there is so much more to this," Nikki said. "It is just a mutual understanding of how much everyone puts into it. For sure (we have) a friendship now."
She added, "When someone asks me what happened in Rio in 20 years time, that is my story. She is my story."
