Rush-hour commuters were tonight warned to avoid London Bridge station after a fresh sinkhole opened up under the track at Forest Hill

Rail operator Southern said capacity into the station was severely reduced while Network Rail repair the 30cm-wide hole, the second to emerge in less than three weeks.

Engineers are currently working at the site to fix the problem, which could take several hours.

Passengers have been advised tonight to use London Victoria or Blackfriars as an alternative.

Network Rails acting area director, Robert Coulson, said: Our engineers are continuing to work at the site of the hole at Forest Hill but we are now expecting disruption to trains for the rest of today.

Im really sorry that passengers have had to put up with this disruption today and I know that people are upset and will want to know we are doing everything we can to return their railway to them.

It comes amid another chaotic day for travellers across the capital with several services delayed and cancelled as a result of the sinkhole.

Disruption on London Overground, Thameslink and Southern Rail services is set to last until at least the end of the day.

Southern services towards London Bridge are affected, with trains unable to call at Norwood Junction, Anerley, Penge West, Sydenham, Forest Hill, Honor Oak Park, Brockley, and New Cross Gate.

London Overground services are unable to run between New Cross Gate, Crystal Palace and West Croydon.

Thameslink services are unable to run between East Croydon and London Bridge.

Train tickets were being accepted on buses and London Underground on any reasonable route.

Disgruntled passengers vented their frustration on social media to described their travel woes.

John Burgess said: Another sinkhole at Forest Hill! More delightful times trying to get to work.

Andy S added: Yet another sink hole spotted by @networkrail at Forest Hill. Quite why they didnt check for it the last time #incompetent.

Last month, passengers endured three days of travel disruption after a 13ft-deep sinkhole opened up at the south London station, close to the site of the new void.
