Missouri football players defend Maty Mauk amid video controversy

Missouri Quarterback Maty Mauk Faces Indefinite Suspension

COLUMBIA A day after Missouri redshirt junior quarterback Maty Mauk was suspended indefinitely by the Missouri athletics department, members of the Missouri football team and Mauks father have come to his defense.

It started with redshirt junior linebacker Michael Scherer, who gave his support via Twitter around 10 a.m. Tuesday.

"Maty has been doing everything he can to be a better person," Scherer said. "No one is perfect. Everyone makes mistakes."

Redshirt freshman wide receiver Kenyon Dilosa and redshirt junior defensive lineman Harold Brantley were among a number of other players who tweeted. The other players were in agreement that the video, which appears to show Mauk snorting a white substance, is old and that Mauk has been working to improve himself.

This is the third time in the past six months the Ohio native has been suspended fromthe team.

Mauks father, Mike Mauk, said Tuesday that he did not know how old the video was, but said his son has been "absolutely" clean since he was reinstated from his second suspension in December.

"I don"t really think there"s anything he"s going to say about it until we take care of things that we need to inside," Mike Mauk said.

Former Missouri offensive lineman Connor McGovern told SECCountry.com, a blog that works in conjunction with the Atlanta-Journal Constitution, that Mauks suspension is due to "bad luck." McGovern played with Mauk at Missouri for three seasons. He and former Missouri center Evan Boehm are in Mobile, Alabama, for the Senior Bowl.

"Hes got some things to fix that are bigger than football," McGovern said. "He doesnt make the best decisions all the time, but nobody does. He just happens to be a quarterback that makes some poor decisions and seems to get caught whenever he makes a bad decision. Theres a lot of people here, Im sure, that have made poor decisions. They just didnt get caught doing it."

The Missouri athletics department has yet to address Mauks status with the team since announcing the suspension Monday via a joint statement from Athletics Director Mack Rhoades and football coach Barry Odom. Mauk is listed as a student in the Missouri student directory, but the MU Registrars Office said Tuesday it cannot divulge information on whether or not a student is still enrolled at MU.

Missouri suspends QB Maty Mauk as it investigates alleged drug video

Missouri Quarterback Maty Mauk Faces Indefinite Suspension

UPDATE 11:29 A.M.

One of Maty Mauks teammates on the Missouri football team told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that the video of Mauk appearing to snort a white powder is two years old and that the Tigers quarterback has since addressed his drug problem.

The teammate asked not to be identified by the Post-Dispatch, telling the paper that Mauk has been really turning things around since the end of the season and has been clean for a while.

The Post-Dispatch also reports, via multiple sources, that Missouri suspended Mauk for the first time last September because he failed a drug test.

The team suspected hed been using drugs and administered the test, leading to his suspension announced Sept. 29, Dave Matter writes.

ORIGINAL POST

Missouri has suspended quarterback Maty Mauk for the third time in four months after a video of someone who closely resembles Mauk snorting a white powder was released online.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch was first to report the news.

We are currently gathering information regarding the video in question. This is an issue we take very seriously and one that will not be tolerated within our program. We will take the appropriate actions once we have all the facts. In the interim, Maty Mauk has been indefinitely suspended for the Mizzou football program, Missouri Athletic Director Mack Rhoades and Coach Barry Odom said in a statement that was released less than two hours after the video was posted.

Mauk, a fourth-year junior in 2015, played just four games last season after being named to the SEC all-freshman team in 2013 and starting all 14 games in 2014. He was suspended twice, once for violating team rules and then again after he was briefly reinstated. According to the Post-Dispatch, the second suspension was the result of a drunken dispute Mauk had outside a bar in Columbia, Mo.

Odom, the Tigers defensive coordinator last season who was promoted to head coach after Gary Pinkels retirement, reinstated Mauk in December and said he was expected to compete for the teams starting quarterback spot in spring practice.

In 2013, Mauk was arrested on four misdemeanor traffic offenses after he struck two parked vehicles while riding his motor scooter. Mauk and two female passengers fled the scene, later refusing to pull over and running a stop sign.

After spending the first 17 years of his Post career writing and editing, Matt and the printed paper had an amicable divorce in 2014. He"s now blogging and editing for the Early Lead and the Post"s other Web-based products.

IRS on the lookout for bogus returns

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: The IRS (HBO)

The guy who prepared your tax return came through big time. Not only was he cheap, he got you ahuge refund, way more than you expected.

How did he do it? You"d know if you could take a look at your return, the one he had you sign inadvance. That"s odd, you don"t have any kids to deduct. And this company on your W-2 that took outtoo much tax? You never worked there.

The magic was fraud fictional dependents and employers, overstated credits and fake W-2s.

A favorite target of these unscrupulous tax preparers are low-to-moderate wage workers and theearned-income tax credit that benefits them, according to the Internal Revenue Service. By its ownestimate, the IRS said the error rate on earned-income tax credit returns can be as high as 27percent.

In 2014, about $18 billion in overpayments were sent out. Some were unintentional, some werecases of fraud.

For about seven weeks beginning in January 2011, Brandon Hamilton and Kenitha Ferguson operatedthe In and Out tax agency at 1687 Oak St. on the Near East Side. They processed more than 20fraudulent 2010 tax returns, according to a federal indictment. That was enough time to steal$132,000 in undeserved tax refunds, which they split between themselves and their clients, prosecutors said.

Hamilton pleaded guilty last week in U.S. District Court in Columbus to conspiring to defraudthe government. The maximum penalty is 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Ferguson pleaded notguilty and was released on bond.

Prosecutors said In and Out advertised on Facebook, by word of mouth and through recruiters whowere paid to line up customers.

Hamilton might face prison. His clients might face a government lawsuit to recover theoverpayments.

"Each taxpayer is accountable for their own tax return," IRS Special Agent Craig Casserly said."As this case progresses, we would look at all the clients" tax returns."

Dan Brown, an assistant U.S. attorney who prosecutes IRS cases, said, "In the long run, theywill have damaged their clients, and the IRS will go after those clients for the money andpenalties."

The IRS operates "scheme development centers" across the country, where investigators look foranomalies such as an unusually large number of earned-income tax-credit filings in a certain ZIPcode, or from the same preparer, Casserly said.

The agency investigated 266 alleged cases of preparer fraud nationwide in fiscal year 2015. Ofthose, 204 defendants were convicted, and 80 percent of them went to prison. The average prisonterm was 27 months.

The arrest numbers could be higher if the agency had more agents, Casserly said. Congressionalbudget cuts have reduced the ranks almost 14 percent through attrition during the past five years. There are about 2,100 agents for the current fiscal year.

"Still, we are doing a good job of prosecuting these individuals," Casserly said, "and we thinkother people are seeing this and getting out of the (fraud) business."

There are several red flags that honest taxpayers should heed when seeking a preparer, Casserlysaid. Ask them for their required "preparer tax identification number," do not sign a blank returnand check the completed return for accuracy.

And make sure the government refund check is sent to you. If a preparer gets the check, he orshe could skim off some of the refund money for themselves.

"Look at the deductions. Do you actually have kids?" Casserly said. He said he knows of cases inwhich people who didn"t plan to file a return "loaned out" their children"s identities to taxpreparers.

FSU settling lawsuit with woman who accused Winston of rape

ERICA KINSMAN rant
By JOE REEDYAssociated Press

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Florida State University has settled a Title IX lawsuit with a former student who said the school failed to adequately investigate allegations that she was raped by former star quarterback Jameis Winston.

The settlement was announced a day before Winston"s accuser, Erica Kinsman, had been scheduled to give a deposition in the case. As part of the settlement, FSU is making a five-year commitment to sexual assault awareness and prevention. The university also has agreed to publish annual reports for the next five years about those programs.

Florida State said in a statement that it has formed a Sexual Assault Prevention Task Group, hired a full-time Title IX coordinator, added six positions to improve campus safety and required all incoming freshmen to complete an online course to make "more informed choices about s*x and relationships."

FSU President John Thrasher also noted that there have been more than 100 training sessions conducted on campus dealing with sexual assault and how to prevent it.

The settlement also calls for a $950,000 payment to Kinsman and her attorneys. A copy of the settlement says Kinsman"s attorneys will get $700,000 of that money, though they say that figure was inserted by the university and that they will receive far less for their fees.

The Associated Press does not typically identify people who say they have been sexually assaulted, but Kinsman has spoken publicly about her case, including in a documentary.

Thrasher said in a press release Monday that the university settled to avoid spending millions on the lawsuit.

"Although we regret we will never be able to tell our full story in court, it is apparent that a trial many months from now would have left FSU fighting over the past rather than looking toward its very bright future," Thrasher said in the release.

Jim Ryan, a partner with Cullen and Dykman who deals in Title IX cases, said typical settlement amounts range from $250,000 to $500,000, but most are kept confidential.

Kinsman has said she was drunk at a Tallahassee bar in December 2012 when Winston and others took her to an apartment, where she says the quarterback raped her.

Winston has said the allegations are false and that he and Kinsman had consensual s*x. Prosecutors said there wasn"t enough evidence to win a conviction and that there were gaps in Kinsman"s story.

A lawsuit filed by Kinsman against Winston - and a countersuit he filed against her claiming she is trying to take advantage of his newfound wealth as the starting quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers - are ongoing and are not affected by the settlement.

A Title IX investigation by the Office of Civil Rights for the U.S. Department of Education also is ongoing. Title IX is a federal statute that bans discrimination at schools that receive federal funding. The department in 2011 warned schools of their legal responsibilities to immediately investigate allegations of sexual assault, even if the criminal investigation has not concluded.

Baine Kerr, one of Kinsman"s attorneys, told The Associated Press that the university wanted Kinsman to withdraw her complaint, but she refused. Kinsman will graduate this spring from another four-year university.

Melissa Ashton, who had been director of FSU"s victim advocate program until August, said in a deposition given this past summer that football players receive special treatment at the school. She said most of the estimated 20 rape victims she encountered during the past decade declined to press student conduct charges.

"My hope is that the federal investigation of my complaint by the Office of Civil Rights will produce even more positive change, not just at FSU, but across the country," Kinsman said in a statement.

The settlement comes as numerous other cases call attention to the need for reform at campuses across the nation, said Brett Sokolow, Executive Director of The Association of Title IX Administrators. Two other colleges, Michigan State University and the University of California, Berkeley have faced similar lawsuits accusing administrators of failing to adequately investigate reports of sexual assault.

"This case has raised awareness nationally because of the high-profile coverage and how starkly the systemic failures were chronicled in the media," Sokolow said.

Associated Press Writers Gary Fineout in Tallahassee, Florida, and Kareem Copeland in Salt Lake City, Utah, contributed to this report.

Pregnant women warned over zika virus

BREAKING: WHO Says "Zika Virus Outbreak Will Spread in Americas Countries"

The Ministry of Health and health professionals are advising pregnant women to avoid travelling to areas with the mosquito-borne zika disease.

Aedes aegypti mosquitos, which can carry the zika virus, are seen in containers at a lab in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Photo: AFP

New Zealand government website SafeTravel lists Samoa as the only Pacific country with zika.

Secretariat of the Pacific Community senior epidemiologist Dr Salanieta Saketa told RNZ International seven other countries and territories across the region - Vanuatu, Fiji, Cook Islands, New Caledonia, French Polynesia, the Federated States of Micronesia and Easter Island - have had cases of the virus, however those cases were not recent.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) said yesterday the virus was likely to spread to all countries in the Americas except Canada and Chile.

An outbreak in Latin America has been linked to an increase in the number of babies being born with microcephaly, or smaller than usual brains and heads.

Brazil has been the worst-hit country, prompting concerns ahead of the Rio Olympics in August.

Some countries in South and Central America have advised women in affected areas to avoid becoming pregnant for up to two years.

WHO has advised pregnant women planning to travel to areas where zika is circulating to consult a healthcare provider before travelling and on return.

Travel advice

In New Zealand, the Ministry of Health is advising women who are pregnant, or plan to become pregnant, to take extra care to avoid exposure to the virus.

The ministry"s deputy director of public health, Dr Shirley Crawshaw, said they should avoid areas with high levels of zika transmission as a precaution.

"If they are going to these areas, then they must be prepared to take protective measures such as wearing long sleeves, wearing long trousers, using insect repellent.

"If they can avoid going, or delay going, then at the moment that would be the advice to that particular group."

Travel Doctor managing director Wendy Penno advised pregnant woman to delay their travel plans as the situation was developing daily.

There was no vaccine but attempts could be made to limit mosquito bites, she said.

"The advice would be don"t go to an area that potentially has zika virus at the moment if you"re pregnant."

College of Midwives advisor Sheridan Massey said pregnant women should discuss any travel plans with their maternity carer.

"When women are planning travel during their pregnancy, [we] encourage them to talk to their midwife - get all the facts, and with the help of their midwife, about how they want to go forward."

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, which runs the SafeTravel website, has advised any concerned travellers to consult a doctor prior to their departure.

Peyton Manning Wife: Patriots Fans Are Last Ones Who Should Accuse QB Of Cheating [PHOTO, VIDEO]

Amid all the trash talk heading into the AFC Championship Game, a liquor company is the latest party to get involved.

Sons of Liberty Spirits Co., based out of South Kingston, R.I., went to great lengths to troll Peyton Manning and his wife, Ashley.

Tom Brady Has More TD Passes In Denver This Season Than Peyton Manning

The liquor enterprise riffed off of Manning"s HGH allegations and sent a care package addressed to his wife. The box included a bottle of whiskey as well as a letter saying he can enjoy it on Super Bowl Sunday, while also providing an unnecessary explanation as to why it was addressed to the quarterback"s wife.

An Aljazeera America report last month alleged that Ashley Manning had HGH shipped to the couple"s home under her name, with the insinuation being that the 14-time Pro Bowler was secretly doping. The accusations angered Manning and he vehemently denied the report, which had some questionable sources tied to it.

Tom Brady"s Diet Proves He"s More Of A Diva Than His Wife

"Also, sorry for addressing the package to your wife," the letter reads, "we heard that"s the best way to get something to you."

The letter also insinuated that Manning can enjoy the whiskey on Feb. 7, as he"ll be watching the Super Bowl from home after Sunday"s AFC Championship Game against the Patriots.

This is the latest salvo in the pre-game trash talk leading up to Sunday"s game. Broncos defensive linemen Antonio Smith and Malik Jackson called out Tom Brady for being a crybaby and begging officials for flags whenever he"s***t.

Not to be out done, Rob Gronkowski fired back at Broncos cornerback Chris Harris Jr. after he said he planned to hit the tight end low as a way to stop him.

The four-time Pro Bowler responded with a tweet that could be read as a double entendre, where he implied the whole Denver team is "good at giving low blows."

Things have escalated so far that a liquor company is now involved in the fun.

Still, if Patriots fans want to attack another team, accusing them of cheating is the last place they should resort to. Lest anyone forget SpyGate and DeflateGate.

Key Matchup: Steelers RT Marcus Gilbert vs. Broncos OLB Von Miller

Von Miller explains his NSFW sack dance on "The Manning Hour"

To get ready for the high altitude and rarefied air in Denver, Steelers right tackle Marcus Gilbert wears an elevation mask when he trains and sleeps in a hyperbaric chamber at night.

The mask creates breathing resistance and simulates low oxygen at high altitudes. The chamber increases air pressure three times higher than the normal level and allows a person to gather more oxygen in his or her lungs.

To get ready for outside linebacker Von Miller, maybe all he should do is go watch game film from the most recent meeting with the Broncos.

Now that was some rarified air.

"I noticed it in warmups, man," Gilbert said, referring to his first game in Denver after the 2011 season, which also happened to be the previous time the Steelers played a postseason game in the Mile High City. "I said this is the real deal. Now that I know that, I can come in better prepared. I wasn"t game-ready against that type of climate, so I have to do a better job this time. I feel I"m a smarter player, especially with taking care of my body to get myself prepared to go to the stadium."

It"s not like he wasn"t prepared last month when the Broncos came to Heinz Field.

Miller came into the game with at least one sack in each of his previous five games, the longest current streak in the league. It was his fifth time since entering the league in 2011 he had a five-game sack streak.

But when he left Heinz Field, Miller not only had his sack streak ended by Gilbert, he did not have a tackle, not even an assist. Gilbert has done that all season. He has allowed only one sack all year -- to Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Carlos Dunlap Dec. 13 in Cincinnati.

"I"m sure it"s going to be a lot different," Gilbert said. "Between him and Carlos, they"re probably the best two [pass rushers] I"ve faced since I"ve been in the league."

Gilbert"s task today is among the difficult, and most important, facing the Steelers.

He has to stop Miller, a four-time Pro Bowler who was second among outside linebacker with 11 sacks in the regular season -- the fourth time in five seasons he has reached double-digit sacks. And he has to protect the right side of quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, in particular his separated right shoulder, from enduring any more pain or discomfort.

"That"s the key every week -- to protect him," Gilbert said. "A lot"s at stake. We"ve just got to do a better job of protecting him."

Roethlisberger was sacked three times last week against the Bengals, the most damaging coming on the final play of the third quarter when linebacker Vontaze Burfict landed on his right shoulder. But the Broncos, who led the league with 52 sacks, could bring more pressure, especially off the edge with Miller and nine-time Pro Bowl linebacker DeMarcus Ware.

That"s where Gilbert comes in.

"You"ve got to slow him down in the run and pass game," Gilbert said of Miller, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2011 draft. "He"s very underrated in the run game. He can get off blocks. He"s the type of dude that can apply pressure on the quarterback and make the quarterback make quicker decisions. His stats don"t reflect his work or play. He"s been getting after the quarterback with a lot of pressure all year and having them make bad decisions with the ball."

Macklemore Tries To Call Out Miley Cyrus For "White Privilege" After Exploiting Gay And Hip Hop Community

Macklemore White Privilege II - Social Justice Warrior & Black Lives Matter Propaganda Exposed!

Macklemores 2013 gay rights anthem Same Love didnt hit the heart of the LGBT community. Instead, it stabbed the hearts of a community that has been trying to work for decades to overcome discrimination. The LGBT community was thrown an exploitative, money-making insult by an act who probably never cared about the rights of the LGBT community.

In August of 2013, DeathandTaxes published an article out about why the song was so controversial and it had nothing to do with conservatives being angry.

In the wake of Macklemores win at the Video Music Awards, openly-gay New York City rapper Le1F took to Twitter to unleash a string of rather hefty accusations at the emcee, implying that Macklemore used his song Same Love to try and make money off of the same-s*x controversy.

As Grammy time came around in early 2014, the controversy continued. Gay Twitter lambasted Macklemore for his gay rights effort.

@macklemore is the @vanillaice of today. Any idiot with a producer, a pop song formula, and a hot topic like gay rights can go platinum.

Perspective (@333biz) January 27, 2014

Macklemore is the worst for his gay and black culture appropriation.

Tone Thugs (@toni_latigra) January 27, 2014

Same Love is one of the most condescending songs to ever hit the airwaves. We have a straight white boy telling the gay community how he thought he was gay, because he could draw, and that he couldnt be gay because he is good at little league.

Then, Macklemore did something unforgivable well, at least to older gay men. He used Madonna, a woman who fought for gay rights in the 1980s and 1990s when the LGBT community was treated less than kindly, in his performance of the song at the 2014 Grammy Awards. It is known as one of her worst performances to date and, unfortunately, made people think Madonna was also exploiting the gay community without understanding her history with the gay community.

Madonna survived, but thats hard to say about Macklemore, who has became a joke ever since he won his Grammy Awards that year. Many thought Kendrick Lamar deserved the Grammys instead. Macklemore has been accused of exploiting the Hip Hop community even before the 2014 Grammy Awards, which produced a massive backlash.

The LGBT community has been dealt with so many blows over the years. In 2013, they had to deal with Macklemore. [Photo by Sean Gallup/Getty Images]Macklemore has a new album coming out on February 26 called This Unruly Mess Ive Made. Perhaps, since his popularity has decreased, he has released a new song called White Privilege II, which hypocritically blames Miley Cyrus and Iggy Azalea for cultural appropriation. Macklemore thinks that bashing other artists will help his cause. He is wrong, especially since Miley Cyrus is a legitimate member of the LGBT community and has done something with her power and privilege.

Spencer Kornhaber of the Atlantic says while Macklemore bashing Miley Cyrus and others in his new song may mean well, but its also insufferable.

The fact that his lyrics are so basic, forgoing metaphor or ambiguity or impressionism, certainly accounts for a big part of his wide appeal. But it also accounts for why many other listeners (ahem) feel pandered to, exhausted by, and/or vaguely embarrassed by his songs.

Kornhaber adds the narrative that Macklemore is trying to convey is more like an op-ed that tells you what exactly to think. Instead, the songs narrative should require more interpretation to help it stick in our minds. In any case, Macklemore has been fried on Twitter and it not only by Miley Cyrus fans.

Macklemore has got to be the worst. This guy does so much pandering to stay relevant. Awful. Just go into politics with your fake activism.

Josh Caudill (@JoshuaCaudill85) January 22, 2016

Macklemore has yet to respond to the backlash against his song and Miley Cyrus has yet to respond to being part of the song. Based on Macklemores past, h**l probably say that people dont like the song because they are racist, not because its actually a terrible song.

The Week in Movies: "Ip Man 3," "The Boy and the World," and "Censored Voices"

The Boy Trailer REACTION!!!

The January movie doldrums hit Portland hard this week. Without any late-opening award contenders on the slate, multiplex audiences are left to choose between what look to be a middling young-adult alien invasion saga ("The Fifth Wave"), a warmed-over creepy-doll chiller ("The Boy"), and perhaps the most egregious stain yet on the career of Robert DeNiro ("Dirty Grandpa").

In a perfect world, Portland"s art house theaters would offer scintillating alternatives to this mediocrity, but that"s not quite the case.

The Chinese martial arts master Ip Man was, until a few years ago, best known to Westerners as the guy who taught Bruce Lee his stuff. These days, he"s become immortalized as a mythic hero in his own right, thanks to a series of cinematic portrayals, including Wong Kar-Wai"s elegiac, stunningly photographed 2013 movie "The Grandmaster." That, though, was but one of a rash of Ip Man films to emerge in the wake of 2008"s "Ip Man," which starred Hong Kong action hero Donnie Yen and took substantial liberties with Ip"s life story.

The movie was a box-office success, though, and Yen reprised the role in 2010"s "Ip Man 2" and now in "Ip Man 3." Like its predecessors, it"s a decent, relatively generic martial arts flick, with some added poignancy due to both the 52-year-old Yen"s encroaching retirement from action films and a subplot involving the terminal illness of Ip"s wife. Otherwise, it"s all about the fight scenes, and they"re entertaining enough, especially one against a villain played by none other than Mike Tyson. Genre fans won"t be disappointed, but "Ip Man 3" won"t have much crossover appeal. (Grade: B-, opens at Regal Fox Tower on Friday, Jan. 22)

The arrival of a new animated feature from distributors GKids is usually a good thing. The company has enabled international treasures including "Song of the Sea," "Ernest and Celestine," and "Tales of the Night" to reach American audiences over the last few years. Itslatest release is the Oscar-nominated Brazilian film "Boy and the World."While it"s definitely an example of adventurous, artistic animation, it doesn"t reach the heights of those other titles. Without using any intelligible dialogue, it tells the story of a young boy living in the impoverished countryside whose father moves to the city in search of work. The boy follows after him, and has a series of encounters that expose him to the woes of the modern world: urbanization, economic exploitation, environmental degradation, etc.

Director Al Abreu uses a unique visual style that combines childlike, almost stick-figure people with an increasingly frenzied decoupage to represent the overstimulated world he"s swallowed up in. It"s rather like a very talented grade-schooler"s refrigerator-door drawings come to expressive life. Unfortunately, the simplistic moral message of the movie and its insistence on remaining nonverbal make "Boy and the World" feel like something that would have been more tolerable as a 15-minute short than as an 80-minute feature. (Grade: C+, opens at Regal Fox Tower on Friday, Jan. 22)

In the years and decades following World War II, American veterans rarely spoke about the horrors they saw and endured, and American culture rarely delved into the darker side of the combat experience. A similar hesitance seems to have occurred in Israel following the triumph of the Six Day"s War in 1967, one thatthe documentary "Censored Voices" aims to belatedly overcome. In the wake of Israel"s surprising and unequivocal defeat of Egypt and Jordan, Israeli author and intellectual Amos Oz, whose first novel had been published just the year before, interviewed a number of Israeli soldiers.

Over 70% of those interviews were censored by the government at the time, but now they have been incorporated, along with fascinating archival footage, into this testament. The nationalist triumphalism of the day is barely evident as young men talk about the violence they committed and endured, including some instances of what would certainly be classified as war crimes. "Censored Voices" demonstrates that no matter how existential the threat, or how just the cause, war inevitably leaves scars on the victors as well as the vanquished. (Grade: B, opens at the Living Room Theaters on Friday, Jan. 22)

It"s also worth noting that the Northwest Film Center"s two ongoing series continue this weekend. The Reel Music programs on tap include a live musical accompaniment for the groundbreaking 1929 Soviet silent film "The Man with a Movie Camera" as well as documentaries on the 1980"s hard-rock band Twisted Sister, reggae pioneer Lee "Scratch" Perry, and bass legend Jaco Pastorius. Meanwhile, the Film Center"s Bollywood retrospective hits the 1970s with the genre-mashing, crowd-pleasing, cops-vs-bandits flick "Sholay." Check www.nwfilm.org for a full schedule.

NBA All-Star 2016: Location, location, location, and why the game needs to return to Salt Lake

Kobe Bryant, 2016 NBA All-Star Game Voting - Should He Be In?

Get it done, Mitt! - Matthew Stockman/Getty Images

Breaking down the division history of the game, and pointing out some uncomfortable truths.

I seem to harp on having a star player on the team a lot. And I recognize that can get pretty tiresome to some fans. Thank you for bearing with me as I publicly express my fears and feelings for our franchise. I also think the team needs a reliable go-to scorer, but the communism approach seems to be working well at times. One thing I haven"t been talking much about has been the upcoming All-Star game in Toronto. I"m excited for this even if we Utah Jazz fans aren"t likely to have a lot of representation that weekend. Yes, it"s not going to be like that one year where Deron Williams was in the Skills competition, Carlos Boozer was in the All-Star Game, Ronnie Brewer and Paul Millsap were in the Rookie/Soph game, and Morris Almond and Kyrylo Fesenko were in the NBADL All-Star Game. (N.B. Kyle Korver was asked to be in the three point contest that year, but instead elected to use the weekend to go back to Philly to do laundry and pay bills .) This season the team may have no one representing the franchise at the mid-season celebration for the league. Again. But I"m still excited. Why?

Truly, we all should be excited because at the very least it"s another ASG closer to returning the game to Utah. (Freebie Marketing pitch "Bringing the Stars back to Utah.") Having looked at where every game has been played (or in the case of the 1999 game, where it was scheduled to be played had there not been a lockout), and which franchises were the hosts it"s clear to me that the next city to be honored to play host SHOULD be a North West division team.

While a Central division team hasn"t been host in a while (1997) and it would be "nice" for LeBron James to play host in 2018, I don"t know if the NBA is going to go East four whopping years in a row: New York (2015), Toronto (2016), Charlotte (2017), then Cleveland (2018). The North West division has hosted the game the fewest number of times; though I think the NBA people may feel like the Las Vegas game (they have no team) counts as a "North West game". Worse still, they may elect to either give it to OKC, who has two stars (and a crappy town), or Minny, who have very young guys and by 2018 it"s clear that Andrew Wiggins will be an All-Star. Also, the Twin Cities actually add up to a larger market team (and the largest market in the division) than most of the NBA outside of the Atlantic Division.

Yet I do dream of a Utah All-Star game. Heck, if Utah can host the Olympics, how the heck does Phoenix get two All-Star games since the 90s and New Orleans two in recent memory (2008, 2014)? Okay, we know the New Orleans thing -- Chris Paul is one and post-Katrina local economy surge is the other. There was no Phoenix Arizona Olympics. Get this done, NBA.

Of course, the North West division makes the least amount of money for the NBA, and as a result may not be rewarded with an All-Star game anytime soon. You could argue that Golden State will get one first because they are making a new arena, and the NBA wants to positively reinforce that type of behaviour.

One can make a case for each division. The Atlantic teams have the largest population bases and make the most potential money during the weekend. The Central teams are good, and haven"t held a game since the 90s. The South East teams have nicer weather than the Atlantic and Central teams. The South West has great weather too, and lots of infrastructure in Texas. (No one mention Memphis.) The Pacific is flashy, a great destination, have great weather, and make a lot of money for the NBA, unless it"s Phoenix. The Northwest, well, they are just plain due.

As for Utah over Minny or OKC, well, it"s more Western in location -- which better reflects the conference. Second, it"s a much easier city to deal with in terms of hotels, infrastructure, public transportation downtown, and so forth. Not a lot of "bangin" discotheques" but we all can"t be Las Vegas. There"s no guarantee that Kevin Durant will be a Thunder player by then. And while Minny is a bigger market with a budding star player, Utah is a more establish basketball market and a more solid franchise. The Jazz will be a playoff team in 2018. Minny? Not so much. IF the NBA does give the game to a North West division team in the next five years and they give it to Portland I will fly over there and spill some hipster"s microbrew beer. If it goes to Denver I will . . . actually . . . I can see that happening too. c**p.

But what do you think?

Jeremy Lin on Verge of Making the NBA All-Star 2016; How To Vote, Ballot, Roster, Date, TV Schedule

2016 NBA All-Star: Stephen Curry

January 4, 2016; Oakland, CA, USA; Charlotte Hornets guard Jeremy Lin (7, right) dribbles the basketball against Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry (30, left) during the third quarter at Oracle Arena. The Warriors defeated the Hornets 111-101. Mandatory Credit: Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

Jeremy Lin is one place from making the NBA All-Star 2016 roster as he is ranked eighth among the guards in the Eastern Conference teams. If the first Chinese-American NBA player makes the roster, it will be the first time for him to be voted as an NBA All-Star and to play in an NBA All-Star game.

In the third returns of NBA All-Star 2016 voting, Lin has 155,475 votes while Dwayne Wade and Kyrie Irving rank first and second, respectively. Lin is ranked just behind Derrick Rose from Chicago Bulls.

While Lin is thriving as a Sixth Man of the Year candidate for the Charlotte Hornets, meaning he"s doing extremely well as a benched player, he is the only Hornets player on the list for all-star game voting returns.

His votes are ahead of other players such as Tony Parker, Damian Lillard, Isaiah Thomas, Reggie Johnson, DeAndre Jordan, and Dirk Nowitzki.

As for his stats, Lin is averaging 12.3 points per game, 3.2 rebounds per game, and 3.1 assists per game this season for the Hornets. He is shooting 42.6% from the field and 31.9% from the three-point field goal. What"s impressive is that he is doing this in only 26.5 minutes per game.

In October"s charity concert in Beijing, Lin was invited to be a guest speaker, during which he shared how his faith helped him overcomethe curve b***s that life throws at him. At this time last season, his career was drowning as he played with Kobe Bryant and the Lakers" squad.

Like Us on Facebook

"I think this past season, the one thing I took away was I really felt G*d"s love for me," Lin said as the audience erupted in cheers. "G*d has always shown his love for me throughout my whole life. I think if you look at my life, every bad situation, G*d always turns to a good situation.

"Last season was no different. There were so many games where I"d be so upset after, and I just remember- there were so many nights on the plane or in the car or at home where I"d just start praying. Every single time, G*d gave me this tremendous peace.

"I think that"s when I realized - I might not know where I"m headed next in life, but I can trust who I"m following. G*d"s love is bigger than anything life can throw at me. My response to G*d"s love to me is it made me start to love other people," Lin said.

Lin has since then started a Bible Study for his teammates and began spending time with homeless individuals. Moreover, he has recently asked for prayers that G*d would soften the hearts of his non-believing teammates.

Fabricio Werdum: I would have slapped Conor McGregor at UFC 197 press conference

Conor McGregor Compares Himself to Captured Mexican Drug Lord "El Chapo" (UFC 197)

LOS ANGELES -- Conor McGregor won the UFC featherweight championship, will fight for the lightweight championship in March, and has already started talking about challenging for the welterweight title.

But if he keeps yapping about Kings MMA, he might find himself in the crosshairs of a heavyweight.

UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum was among those watching Wednesday"s UFC 197 press conference in Las Vegas, which promoted the March 6 fight between McGregor and lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos.

McGregor repeatedly insulted the soft-spoken dos Anjos, Werdum"s teammate at Kings MMA in Orange County, Calif. And the heavyweight champ, who was in Los Angeles on Thursday promoting his UFC 196 title rematch with Cain Velasquez, didn"t take too kindly to his words.

"When have a fight with my friend, you have a fight with me, too," Werdum said. "We"re a family. If you say something bad, you pay for this for sure."

Werdum took particular exception to McGregor"s habit of talking over dos Anjos when the lightweight champ was asked questions by reporters during the press conference, and by his demeanor in the staredown photo-op.

The heavyweight champ insinuated he would throw his water in McGregor"s face and slap him if McGregor ever attempted to try something like that with him.

"When [reporters] had a question for Raphael and he talked over him, this is no good," Werudm said. "If it was my opponent, I would do this [Werdum makes a gesture like throwing water in his face, then makes a slapping sound], I"d say be quiet." But that"s not Rafael"s personality. He"s a smart guy, okay, he controls himself, he just thinks about the fight."

If anyone has earned the right to talk trash, it"s Werdum, a multi-time world jiu-jitsu championship gold medalist who also ended Fedor Emelianenko"s win streak and made a run all the way to the UFC heavyweight title. But he"s not about to go that route.

"It"s very important to respect," Werdum said. "You have your space, I have my space. We have a fight, why do you touch me before. I thought Conor McGregor wasn"t showing respect. It"s not good. If he does it to me, he has a big problem. It think it"s very important he respects my space and I respect his space."

Reflecting on 72-win Bulls: Every game was "like a playoff game"

Golden State Warriors vs Chicago Bulls - Full Game Highlights | Jan 20, 2016 | NBA 2015-16 Season

CHICAGO -- The respect is there.

The 1995-96 Chicago Bulls, the team that set an NBA record by going 72-10 in the regular season and winning an NBA championship, is watching what the 2015-16 Golden State Warriors are doing with equal parts pride, awe and angst. The Warriors come into Wednesday night"s game against this version of the Bulls with a 38-4 record. They"ve been compared to the Bulls at every turn, especially since they began the season on an improbable and record-setting 24-0 winning streak.

  • Steph vs. MJ. Draymond vs. The Worm. Steve Kerr vs. ... Steve Kerr? The Golden State coach breaks down a would-be epic clash between the 2015-16 Warriors and 1995-96 Bulls.

  • In 1995, the Chicago Bulls embarked on the greatest season in NBA history. Twenty years later, we"re reliving Chicago"s magical 72-10 season with a game-by-game breakdown.

  • Are 73 wins within reach for Golden State? We"re tracking the Warriors" pursuit of history as they chase the 1995-96 Bulls.

2 Related

But before any comparisons are drawn between the two super teams, the Bulls want to make one thing very clear: If these two teams could have jumped into some kind of dream machine and met at the same time to play against each other, there is little doubt in the Bulls" collective wisdom what would have happened.

"I"ll bet you out of, I don"t know, 15 players, probably 16 would say that we would beat them," said former Bulls swingman Toni Kukoc, who now serves as an ambassador for the Bulls.

As confident as Kukoc and some of his other teammates are -- both in the feeling that they were the better all-around team and that their 72-win total will continue to stand even after this season -- the Warriors" play has made many of the former Bulls think about their record more than ever.

"I"ve thought a lot more this year about the 72-10 season than I have in the past because they"re so close to doing it," former Bulls center Bill Wennington said. "Now they"ve just picked up their fourth loss in Detroit the other day, so I"d lie to you if I say I wasn"t happy about it. But records and rules are made to be broken. It"s going to happen one day. The longer it lasts, the better it is. But they"re a great team, they play in a great system, they move the ball well, they play together well ... they"re fun to watch."

At 38-4 entering Wednesday"s game, the Warriors have fallen off the 73-win pace after their loss to the Pistons on Saturday. But Golden State still has a 14.3 percent chance to win 70 games, according to ESPN"s Basketball Power Index, up from 7.9 percent following their 132-98 thrashing of the Cavaliers on Monday.

Kukoc called the Warriors" play "beautiful." Former Bulls guard Randy Brown said what Golden State has accomplished so far this season has been "quite scary." Wennington, the radio color commentator for the Bulls, sees the joy the Warriors play with and notices the similarities.

Michael Jordan, talking with the media after the Bulls won their 70th game on April 16, 1996, set the tone early for their record-setting season.ERIC CHU/AFP/Getty Images

"It"s comparable in the way that they play together," Wennington said. "They"re having fun out there. And it looks like they genuinely like each other"s company. Everyone understands what their role is on their team. And so in that way, I think they"re very comparable because guys are going out there, everyone"s playing real well.

"Whether they have a starting role or they play five to 10 minutes a game role, whoever"s out there is doing their job but having fun doing it. That was very much what we did. Hey, I wanted to start, I wanted Luc Longley"s job, but I understood what my job was and I was going to go out and do what I had to do, and the same with Randy Brown, Jud Buechler and Steve Kerr. We all wanted to play more, but that"s a good thing. You want guys that want to play more, but also guys that understand what their role is on the team, what they have to do."

The tone for that 1995-96 season was set early by Michael Jordan. Like Stephen Curry has done for the Warriors after earning the first MVP award of his career last season, Jordan was the one who led the way from the outset of that magical season, leading the league with 30.4 points a game to go along with 20.4 win shares and tying David Robinson in Player Efficiency Rating with 29.4. And like the Warriors have surely used the perceived slight that they were lucky in their path to the NBA title last season because they stayed healthy and didn"t have to face the Spurs or Clippers in the playoffs, the 1995-96 Bulls had their own motivation.

Toni Kukoc has no doubt that the Jordan-led 1995-96 Bulls would beat the 2015-16 Warriors.Andrew D. Bernstein/NBAE/Getty Images

"I remember Michael in training camp, he said every game was going to be like a playoff game to him," Brown said. "And I"m pretty sure you guys remember [the Bulls] had just lost to Orlando the season before [in the 1995 Eastern Conference finals] and during training camp he said every game is a playoff game, and that"s the way we approached it. We had a veteran team. We had a system in play. We had limited injuries, we were lucky with that, and I just remember we were more serious than we were from the other two title teams. That "95-"96 team was all business."

In their first full season with Jordan back from his first retirement, the Bulls led the NBA in points per game (105.20), offensive efficiency (115.2) and defensive efficiency (101.8). They had 13- and 18-game winning streaks before going 11-1 through the first three rounds of the playoffs on the way to defeating the Seattle Supersonics 4-2 in the NBA Finals.

The confidence of those record-breaking Bulls" isn"t rooted in cockiness. It"s cemented by the fact that they had Jordan, arguably the greatest player of all time, as the centerpiece and a host of athletic and versatile players who could play multiple spots, much like the Warriors now.

"... during training camp [Jordan] said every game is a playoff game and that"s the way we approached it. We had a veteran team. ... and I just remember we were more serious than we were from the other two title teams."

Randy Brown

"Klay Thompson you could say is like Scottie Pippen," Wennington said. "Draymond [Green] could be the Dennis [Rodman], but we had Toni. Everyone forgets how good Toni was and what he really meant to the team. But they"ve got some great players and guys filling into holes around them."

The Warriors have Andre Iguodala, an athletic wing who spent time guarding LeBron James during last season"s Finals and has been a vital player off the bench for Golden State the past two seasons. The Bulls could counter with Ron Harper, another athletic wing, who his teammates believe would have drawn the assignment of guarding Curry.

Current Bulls head coach Fred Hoiberg reiterated Tuesday that he believes Curry is the best shooter the league has ever seen, but Kukoc doesn"t believe Curry should be considered the game"s best player.

"There are people [who] think that he"s the best player in the league," Kukoc said. "It"s hard to argue that he is the best player, but he is certainly the best scorer, the best shooter, very, very talented ball-handling guy and he uses every bit of it. It"s a pleasure to watch him. But if you put complete basketball from a defensive standpoint, a rebounding standpoint, and all that, you can"t ... I don"t think you can compare [him to] LeBron or some other player. I would even put in [Bulls guard Jimmy] Butler. These two-way players, defensively and offensively are really good."

Brown, who made a name for himself as a defensive player during the Bulls" second three-peat and currently serves as an assistant coach on Hoiberg"s staff, isn"t certain if he could have slowed down Curry. Brown credited Jordan and Harper with helping him become a better defensive player, but he knows that Curry is playing a different game than most of his peers.

Winning 70 games became a reality on April 16, 1996 when the Bulls passed the 1971-72 Lakers" 69 victories.Jonathan Daniel/Allsport/Getty Images

"I"m not sure if angles would probably work with Stephen Curry today," Brown said. "He"s got different angles. It would have been different with Ron Harper, because he"s long, he was smart; but I"m seeing Stephen Curry, he"s doing it against small, medium, large, it"s not mattering to him. So the angle part with him probably wouldn"t make a difference."

The former Bulls all acknowledge Curry"s greatness as a scorer and also note how big of an adjustment it would be to play against Golden State now because of the way the league has changed with no more handchecking. But the new rules would also have helped Jordan"s game.

"Of course, I think the game would have been better for Michael, because he would have slowed the game down by living at the free throw line," Brown said. "We would have actually had to adjust by using our length a little bit more."

The beauty of the Warriors" game is that, much like the Bulls from 20 years ago, they make teams adjust to them. They play their own style and force opponents into a game they aren"t comfortable with. The Warriors have the killer instinct and the confidence to break the will of the team they are facing on most nights, a mantle the Bulls earned during their record-setting campaign.

"Cleveland tried to play them physical, and they just got out of their game so much that they couldn"t do anything about it," Kukoc said of the Warriors" rout of the Cavaliers on Monday.

The irony and importance that their former teammate Kerr is now the head coach of the Warriors isn"t lost on any of his former teammates. Kerr hasn"t coached a game yet this season as he recovers from offseason back surgery, but he has set the foundation for the success interim head coach Luke Walton and his players are having this season. It remains unclear when Kerr will return to the sidelines, but he still plays a major role in the Warriors" success.

"The second half of the season is a lot harder than the first half of the season ... in the end [Steve Kerr] is going to remind them that the record doesn"t matter. It"s the ring at the end that matters."

Bill Wennington

"I think it"s very important," Wennington said. "I think Steve knows exactly what it takes and the focus that you need to have so he can be there in the locker room. And I know he goes to all the home practices and he"s there a lot to settle the guys down and say, "Hey, this is great, but you got to be focused." The second half of the season is a lot harder than the first half of the season ... in the end he"s going to remind them that the record doesn"t matter. It"s the ring at the end that matters."

The ring might matter most, but the former Bulls hope that they can keep their record a bit longer.

"It might be a little champagne flowing when they lose that 11th game," Brown said with a smile. "I wouldn"t mind.

"As they say, they"re not focusing on the record as well; I think they"re focusing on playing good basketball. And if that turns into wins, so be it for them."

In the sequel, the couple finds themselves enlisting their the help of their old nemesisto fightwhat might be an even bigger threat: a sorority next door.

Chlo Grace Moretz, Kiersey Clemons, and Beanie Feldstein play three of the ladies of Kappa Nu, who arent about to let a little thing likefurious neighborsstop them from throwing epic ragers. Adding to the pain this time is the fact that the girls are, well, girls. With the sorority girls, its like a glimpse into their daughters future, and it terrifies them, Byrne has said. So what exactly has the Radners so spooked? Find out with the firstNeighbors 2: Sorority Rising trailer after the jump.

UPDATE: An international trailer forNeighbors 2 has just hit, and you can watch it below.

UPDATE: And heres an international trailer with some different footage.

Directed byNicholas Stoller,Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising opens May 20. Heres the detailed official synopsis:

Returning stars Seth Rogen, Zac Efron and Rose Byrne are joined by Chlo Grace Moretz for Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising, the follow-up to 2014s most popular original comedy. Nicholas Stoller again directs in a film that follows what happens when the will of parenthood goes against the bonds of sisterhood.

Now that Mac (Rogen) and Kelly Radner (Byrne) have a second baby on the way, they are ready to make the final move into adulthood: the suburbs. But just as they thought theyd reclaimed the neighborhood and were safe to sell, they learn that the new occupants next door are a sorority even more out of control than Teddy (Efron) and his brothers ever dreamed of being.

Tired of their schools sexist, restrictive system, the unorthodox ladies of Kappa Nu have decided to start a house where they can do whatever the h**l they want. When Shelby (Moretz) and her sisters, Beth (Kiersey Clemons) and Nora (Beanie Feldstein), find the perfect place just off campus, they wont let the fact that its located on a quiet street stand in their way of parties as epic as the guys throw.

Forced to turn to the one ex-neighbor with the skills to bring down the new Greeks next door, the Radners alongside best friends Jimmy (Ike Barinholtz) and Paula (Carla Gallo) bring in charismatic Teddy as their secret weapon. If he can infiltrate the sorority and charm his way through it, the thirtysomethings will shutter the Kappas home. But if they think that their neighbors are going down without a fight, they have severely underestimated the power of youthful ingenuity and straight-up crazy.

A peek into a top tech attorney"s pitch to lure Bay Area technology jobs to Atlanta

Taylor Swift plays DC: Your Swiftie forecast for Monday night"s #1989TourDC concert

John Yates, a top tech attorney with Atlanta law firm Morris, Manning & Martin, often more

Bay Area residents have long seen the newspaper ads and billboards from other states and cities eager to persuade the region"s employers that they should be doing business elsewhere.

There was Fargo, N.D."s pitch to Bay Area businesses that looked likely to prove six degrees of separation. (That city"s average temperature in January is just six degrees.) Then there"s our neighbor to the north, Canada, that isn"t about to pass up an opportunity to give its tech sector a boost.

John Yates, a top tech attorney with Atlanta law firm Morris, Manning & Martin, often more

The nation that makes Fargo look downright balmy in January at one point posted a billboard along a Silicon Valley highway letting immigrant tech workers know that if they can"t get visas to work in the United States, well, welcome to Canada.

Often the courtship between economic recruiters wooing Bay Area businesses occurs behind closed doors. But Atlanta-based RentPath"s decision this week to close up shop in San Francisco led to an opportunity to speak with one of the top tech attorneys in Georgia"s capital city. (Full disclosure: I"m a former business reporter in Atlanta and the city remains one of my favorites.)

I was eager to hear details of his Atlanta pitch, the tech sectors that he"s targeting in the Bay Area, and the questions he gets about doing business in his hometown.

As for the pitch, I asked him whether he just tells Bay Area tech employers the median salary for tech workers in Atlanta, case closed.

"The salary differential is a well-known story," said John Yates, head of the technology group at Atlanta law firm Morris, Manning & Martin. He spends a lot of time telling Atlanta"s story, rattling off a list of strengths: the nation"s busiest airport and all the flights that come with that designation, mild weather and a burgeoning tech sector.

In speaking with Yates and a tech worker who recently moved from the Bay Area to Atlanta, it was surprising how quickly they conceded that the Bay Area is a special place.

"There"s no other place quite like Silicon Valley," Yates said, adding that he has been impressed with the region"s startup ecosystem since his first visit here in 1979 to see his sister, who was involved in a tech startup.

And before alarms start ringing in the Bay Area, Zillow (NASDAQ: ZG) Chief Economist Svenja Gudell, who tracks migration patterns and home prices, says, "For every two people you hear are leaving San Francisco for Portland or Seattle, there are three others moving to the Bay Area."

That"s not deterring Yates. He has played an unofficial role as an ambassador for Atlanta"s business community for more than three decades and isn"t shy about touting his hometown. He has scheduled about 25 meetings that will involve connecting with approximately 60 business leaders while he"s in town next week. He"s spending half his time in San Francisco and the rest essentially as a door-to-door salesman among the venture capital firms that line Sand Hill Road.

"Venture capitalists tell us they like to start companies in Silicon Valley and grow them in Atlanta," Yates says proudly.

For good reason, Bay Area residents cast a wary eye on visitors from the South eager to demonstrate a little southern hospitality. After all, a visit almost 20 years ago from one of the South"s biggest cheerleaders, banker Hugh McColl, ended up with him taking the Bank of America name and headquarters back home with him to Charlotte.

Then there"s the then-governor of Texas, Rick Perry, whose recruiting forays into California became so frequent that the Bay Area Council issued a press release urging him to go home already. That was back in 2014 just hours before Perry delivered his formal remarks at the Commonwealth Club that included comparing homosexuality to alcoholism.

His analysis sparked an audible gasp from the audience and reminded many why they don"t live in the Lone Star State.

This month, it appeared that word of last summer"s Supreme Court decision making gay marriage a national right hasn"t yet reached Alabama, or at least that state"s Chief Justice Roy Moore, who recently advised probate judges to stop issuing same-s*x marriage licenses.

And as Alabama goes, so goes California in the opposite direction.

"Social issues rarely come up because Atlanta is known as a pro-business city that supports diversity," said Yates, who acknowledges that there are strongly held opinions on both sides of these controversial issues in Georgia, just as there are across the country.

Atlanta"s business community has a long history of supporting civil rights, often looking at mistakes and missteps made by other cities in deciding how to navigate the issues. Yates was eager to tout this month"s efforts by a business group, Georgia Prospers, that"s drawing supporters from the city"s business community to ward off efforts to make discrimination against LGBT customers legal, echoing the controversy in Indiana that had Salesforce.com (NYSE: CRM) CEO Marc Benioff planning to airlift affected employees out of that state as part of an effective campaign to fight discriminatory legislation.

The Georgia Prospers initiative has garnered support from major Atlanta employers, including Coca-Cola, (NYSE: KO) of course, as well as Home Depot, (NYSE: HD) Delta Air Lines, (NYSE: DAL) Google, (NASDAQ: GOOG) Bank of America (NYSE: BAC) and Wells Fargo. (NYSE: WFC)

"From our burgeoning status as the Hollywood of the East Coast, to new companies moving here and other companies growing here we all win when our state can attract and retain good businesses and entrepreneurs," touts the Georgia Prospers website, which notes that "Georgia"s business owners understand the fundamental value that"s at the bedrock of our society: We always have to treat others the way we"d want to be treated."

I asked Yates what tech sectors are on his calling card.

"Fintech is big for us, especially in payments," he said before moving on to Atlanta"s strengths in cybersecurity, data analytics and health-care technology.

Asked what he considers to be Atlanta"s sharpest rivals in winning Bay Area jobs, Yates rattles off a number of cities and their disadvantages in the good-natured spirit that one might also use to defend their favorite sports team.

"There"s Dallas-Fort Worth, but then you"re in Texas; there"s Austin, still in Texas; Boston, the weather; D.C., nice weather but it does get very hot," Yates says.

I asked Yates whether his mission reflects the attitude of Texans, who upon hearing that Charles Schwab (NYSE: SCHW) was moving jobs from San Francisco to their state, urged the brokerage firm to move the jobs but keep the Californians. Yates laughed and said that it"s often a mix of transferring key employees to Atlanta while hiring others locally.

There"s definitely the demand for tech talent. When Yates once alerted his LinkedIn network of some tech talent moving from the Bay Area to Atlanta, he promptly got 40 responses that echoed the first missive: "Please send them to me."

Yates told me of one couple, a husband and wife who work as product designers in technology.

"They want to start a family and own a home. That can happen in Atlanta," Yates said.

I decided to hear firsthand from these folks, so I called 31-year-old Chase Curry, whose wife is expecting their first child. They moved back to Atlanta in October, after spending two years here, trading life in San Francisco"s Hayes Valley neighborhood for their home in Atlanta"s historic Kirkwood neighborhood.

Curry, who works for GoPro, (NASDAQ: GPRO) said he had to defend the decision to return to Atlanta with some of his Bay Area friends and colleagues.

"I was born and raised in the South, and there were things I missed. When you grow up in a place, there are small, subtle things that you don"t realize you"re going to miss," Curry said. "Atlanta is essentially a forest with tall buildings scattered about.

"One thing I missed was hearing crickets chirp when I went to bed at night," Curry said.

No doubt, there will be plenty of Bay Area economic development officials eager to tell the region"s tech leaders that Atlanta is the place to be if they want to hear crickets chirp. (With apologies to all my friends in Atlanta.)

Remember Glenn Frey With These 10 Great Videos: Live, Interviews And More

"In Memory of Glenn Frey " Eagles Hotel California

Today (Jan. 18) Eagles founding member Glenn Frey died at the age of 67. Collaborating with the likes of Don Henley and Joe Walsh, the vocalist and multi-instrumentalist performed on some of rock"n" roll"smost iconic songs with Eagles. After they broke up in 1980, Frey enjoyed a successful solo career andhoned his acting skills, performing in shows like Miami Vice and films such asJerry Maguire. Eagles reformed in 1994, and Frey continued his duties -- both live and in the studio -- until the end of his life.
