Green Bay Packers position preview: safeties

ALL-TIME GREEN BAY PACKERS SQUAD BUILDERS & GAMEPLAY | MADDEN 16 ULTIMATE TEAM

Safeties are the last resort for defenses. Sometimes they are the only playerskeeping an offensive playerfrom scoring. They can cover wide receivers and they can bring down the toughest of running backs. Luckily, the Green Bay Packers havea pair of very talented safeties that can do it all.

Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, the starter at full safety, has been one of the best players on the Packers defense in his two years with the team. Hes totaled 192 total tackles over two seasons while also contributing four sacks, three interceptions, and nine pass deflections. Hesa safety that can make plays no matter where he is on the field. Clinton-Dix has shown his abilities as a ball hawk over the past two seasons, so look for him to make more big plays against the pass.

Morgan Burnett

Morgan Burnett, the starting strong safety,is the second oldest player in the secondary. Hes been the steady and consistent player the Packers have needed over the past six seasons. Burnett isnt a ball hawk as much as Clinton-Dix is, but he can tackle. Hes had over 100 tackles in three of his six seasons. He would probably have gotten more than 100 tackles last season if it wasntfor an injury that took him out of the regular season for five games. Burnett will be an importantdefender against the run this season.

Micah Hyde

Micah Hyde is the versatile player on the Packers defense. He can play as a cornerback and he can play as a safety. Last season he started five games for aninjured Morgan Burnett and he played well. h**l probably start the season as a backup for the safeties, but Hyde will alsobe used at multiple positions in different defensive formations throughout the season.

The backups

Chris Banjo is the main backup for the safeties. He can be used for either safety position, and we will see him play a few snaps throughout the season, but he will mainly be used for the special teams unit. RookiesKentrell Brice, Marwin Evans, and newly signed Jermaine Whitehead round out the rest of the safeties. These guys will probably also be used for the special teams unit.

Green Bay Packers" Mike McCarthy: "Can"t tell you how proud I am" of Giants ...

2015 Green Bay Packers | Road to Super Bowl 50 | NFL

Ben McAdoo is undoubtedly a Mike McCarthy guy.

And McCarthy, the Green Bay Packers" head coach, could not be more thrilled his former assistant is set to become the Giants" head coach, saying McAdoo"s promotion is "no surprise."

"I"m very happy for Ben and Toni (McAdoo"s wife), to be in this position and the opportunity that is in front of them," McCarthy told reporters in Green Bay on Thursday as his team prepares for Saturday"s playoff game at the Arizona Cardinals.

"I can"t tell you how proud I am of him, and just the job he"s done over the years. He"s definitely ready, and deserving."

McCarthy and McAdoo first met in 2003 when McCarthy, then the New Orleans Saints" offensive coordinator, gave McAdoo a phone interview for a quality control position. The story has become well known.

PLUS: Tom Coughlin made right decision to pass on Eagles

What changes will Ben McAdoo make as Giants head coachAs McAdoo is introduced to the media, that"s what I want to hear. How will he be different than Tom Coughlin.

Here it is from a 2013 Star-Ledger feature after McAdoo was hired as Giants offensive coordinator:

Mike McCarthy made a cold call to McAdoo during that season at Fairfield to interview him for a quality control opening with the Saints. McCarthy had been the offensive coordinator there for two years at that point. He was from the Pittsburgh area like Ben. He could trust him.

After the talk, McCarthy hung up and went back to work at the scouting combine in Indianapolis. McAdoo, without notifying a soul, jumped into his car and drove 12 hours across the fattest part of three different states to meet the coach in person the next morning. McAdoo didn"t sleep to begin with; the only sunlight came during practice, but it didn"t matter.

"He filled his car up with gas, and I come walking through the lobby I never met Ben and he"s sitting there with a bag of playbooks and a suit coat on," McCarthy said, laughing. "A great first impression."

McCarthy would hire McAdoo with the Saints in 2004. When McCarthy moved to the San Francisco 49ers in 2005, McAdoo eventually followed after a detour at Stanford. McAdoo then followed McCarthy to Green Bay, coaching tight ends and then quarterbacks, before jumping to the Giants. And now, McAdoo himself is a head coach.

The Green Bay Packers Have Terrible Taste in "Rom-Coms"

Aaron Rodgers" Amazing Hail Mary: The Miracle in Motown! | Packers vs. Lions | NFL
Photo: Wesley Hitt/Getty Images

Isn"t it so adorable and hilarious when super macho dudes, like the Green Bay Packers football team, embrace stereotypically female interests, such as watching "romantic comedies?" That is the thesis of this Wall Street Journal article, which honestly buries the lede: that not only do the Packers have terrible taste in romantic comedies, they don"t even really know what a romantic comedy is.

"I love rom-coms, all of them, Im a big rom-com guy, guard Josh Sitton told theJournal. How To Lose a Guy in Ten Days is a good one.The Devil Wears Prada is a great, great movie.

No.

At its core, a romantic comedy is a funny movie about love that goes awry in some way, but has a happy ending. Notting Hill? Rom-com. Love Actually? Totally a rom-com (and a favorite of bros!). Unfortunately, the Packers" operational definition of "romantic comedy" appears to be "a movie without explosions," or perhaps, "a movie with a woman in it." By that definition, The Human Centipedewould be classified a rom-com, which FYI it is not.

Pitch Perfect, an abiding love for which unites the Packers team, is not a romantic comedy, it is a comedy with women in it.The Devil Wears Pradais a comedy about the difficulties of being a woman balancing your professional and personal lives, which doesn"t sound very romantic to me.

Semantics aside, anyone with good taste is capable of discerning between a good and bad rom-com, and knows that a rom-com"s worth is largely determined by its cast. You could make a movie about a cyclops brewing a love potion to manipulate a robot dinosaur into loving her, but as long as it starred Hugh Grant, it"d be a good rom-com. The same cannot be said for Kate Hudson vehicles. (Sorry, Kate. Love your athleisure line though!)

If any of the Green Bay Packers need other totems of ladyhood womansplained to them, hit me up. I"ll be watching Bridget Jones" Diary (a rom-com).

Aaron Rodgers, Packers win fourth straight NFC North title

DRAMATIC ENDING TO CHICAGO BEARS-GREEN BAY PACKERS GAME (1984)
Packers Clinch NFC North With Win

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- A heating pad wrapped around his sore left calf, Aaron Rodgers could only watch helplessly on television monitors in the locker room as the Detroit Lions surged closer to his Green Bay Packers.

There was only one place that he wanted to be -- back on the turf with the rest of the Packers while they tried to secure a fourth straight NFC North title.

Green Bay"s franchise quarterback is limping into the playoffs with a smile. Rodgers threw two touchdown passes to Randall Cobb, Eddie Lacy gashed Detroit"s defense for 100 yards, and the Packers celebrated another division championship with a 30-20 victory Sunday.

Rodgers will appreciate a week off after the win, as the Packers (12-4) earned a bye. Detroit (11-5) starts the postseason at Dallas next Sunday. Green Bay will next play on the following Sunday.

More from ESPN.com

Aaron Rodgers" inspirational performance Sunday was important to give the banged-up quarterback a week off as the Packers claimed another division title, Rob Demovsky writes. Story

The Lions have gone 0-4 against playoff teams on the road this season, which does not bode well for postseason success after losing Sunday, Michael Rothstein writes. Story

NFC playoffs Q&A: John Clayton examines the top questions heading into the NFC playoffs, including whether anybody has a chance to dethrone the Seahawks. Story

"It"s clearly an MVP performance -- another MVP performance -- by Aaron Rodgers," coach Mike McCarthy said. Rodgers won the award in 2011.

Rodgers was carted to the locker room after tossing his first score to Cobb late in the second quarter. He tweaked the calf during last week"s win at Tampa Bay.

This injury came in a different spot in the calf, Rodgers said. He came up limping again.

In the locker room while getting treatment, Rodgers said he was thinking about "if I could finagle myself to go back in the game."

He hobbled back on to the field in the third quarter with the game tied at 14.

"I just felt like if I got in there, it might give us a little jolt," Rodgers said.

The jolt soon followed. A seven-play, 60-yard drive ended with a 13-yard score to Cobb for a 21-14 lead. The Packers didn"t look back.

Rodgers plunged across the goal line from 1 yard with 8:45 left to help Green Bay regain a two-touchdown lead. "MVP! MVP" chanted adoring fans while light snow dusted Lambeau Field.

Rodgers finished 17 of 22 for 226 yards. He was out of the game for about a seven-minute stretch between the second and third quarters. In between, Calvin Johnson had touchdown catches of 4 and 20 yards on consecutive drives to help the Lions roar back from a 14-0 deficit.

Detroit hasn"t won a division title since 1993. It hasn"t won a road game against the Packers since 1991. For a few moments while Rodgers was out, it looked like both those streaks might end.

Instead the Packers were victorious again at Lambeau and finished the regular season 8-0 at home.

The Lions drew within 30-20 with 1:45 left after Matthew Stafford connected with Theo Riddick for a 6-yard touchdown. But Riddick"s 2-point conversion run failed, Tramon Williams recovered the ensuing onside kick and Green Bay ran out the clock.

Stafford finished 20 of 41 for 217 yards.

The Lions head home at least with the comfort that they had clinched a playoff berth regardless of Sunday"s outcome -- just the second playoff appearance since 2000.

"We"re 11-5, and it"s a new season," coach Jim Caldwell said. "None that stuff matters. We"ve got to look forward."

They could have accomplished so much more if not for some painful mistakes.

After blocking Mason Crosby"s 52-yard field goal attempt, the Lions lost the ball when Stafford fumbled on what looked like an aborted handoff to Joique Bell. The Packers cashed in with Rodgers" 1-yard sneak.

"It was just on our part, self-inflicted wounds, and we know that," cornerback Rashean Mathis said. "But kudos to them, they did make plays -- enough plays to win this ballgame."

Rodgers felt more pain after Detroit"s 305-pound defensive tackle, Ndamukong Suh, stumbled back and stepped on Rodgers" lower left leg while the quarterback was on the ground at the end of a play. There was no penalty, and Rodgers tried to shove Suh back as the defender walked away.

Suh had cleared out of the locker room by the time reporters were allowed in after the game. Caldwell said he didn"t think it was an intentional act.

Rodgers said referee Walt Anderson told him he thought Suh was blocked into the quarterback. McCarthy didn"t see the play, but heard enough from others to be unhappy with Suh.

"There"s no place for that," McCarthy said. "I don"t understand it, frankly."

Game notesRodgers finished the season with a 112.2 passer rating and is the only player in NFL history to register a 100-plus rating in six consecutive seasons. ... WR Jordy Nelson had six catches for 86 yards, and set a franchise record with 1,519 yards for the season. ... Bell finished with 60 yards on 13 carries. ... The Lions allowed a season-worst 152 yards on the ground.
