Alabama football is one of the richest college football programs in the country, and Crimson Tide fans languishing on the season ticket list wont be surprised where most of the revenue comes from.
As shown on this chart developed by Business Insider based on data from BusinessOfCollegeSports.com, ticket sales account for over $36 million dollars in revenue for Alabama football. That figure represents the majority of the $88.7 million in net revenue generated by the football program.
Tickets for Tide football games against major SEC opponents command a high price, and the scalper and ticket broker industry is big business. A recent report noted that there were 32,000 people on the Tide Pride waiting list, and that only half of one percent of season ticket holders drop off the list each year.
Contributions to the university earmarked for football accounted for almost $19 million in revenue, making for the second most lucrative line item for the team. NCAA and SEC payouts to the university brought in an additional $16 million.
Theres no doubt Alabama football is a hot ticket, particularly as the Tide continue their unprecedented run of success. Its one of the primary reasons for the growth of the university and the city of Tuscaloosa in general. But what happens when Tide football goes through the inevitable downturn? A rising Tide lifts all boats to be sure. But football success is cyclical, and an Alabama football-based economy is only as bullish as the teams fortunes.
