Looking For A New Diet? DASH Diet is the Best

My Results are in ! The Dash diet weight loss solution

So, here we are. It is a couple days into January; the New Year. And most people have probably made at least one resolution to live healthier. Whether that is about losing weight or getting into better shape or just feeling better, it all starts with what you put inside your body.

Yes, it is time to take a look at your diet.

But as easy as it is to decide it is time to get healthy, actually doing it is not quite so easy. Part of this, of course, is just sticking with it for as long as it takes. Discipline is difficult.

But part of what makes it so hard to adjust your diet is knowing which diet will serve you best.Fortunately, U.S. News & World Report has just offered up its list of this years best diet plans.

The Best Diets of 2015 is the fifth edition of this survey which ranks dozens of popular diet trends according to efficacy to better assist people trying to figure out which one they should try.

"The Bachelor": Relive the 11 most awkward and outrageous limo exits!

The Bachelor Juan Pablo Finale - TOP 15 Shocking Moments

It"s a new season of "The Bachelor" which means one thing: a whole new batch of crazy ladies!

To help kick your year off with a laugh we"re taking a look the most awkward, outrageous and cringe-worthy limo exits from Monday"s season premiere with new bachelor Chris Soules.

Warning: There are some ridiculous gimmicks ahead so brace yourself for plenty of groans and severe eye-rolling.

First up we had Britt, a waitress from LA who loves to give loooong hugs -- and her first embrace with the bachelor clocked in at just under six Mississippi-worthy seconds!

Alissa the flight attendant buckled Chris up for a bumpy ride, Nicole was looking to ham things up by wearing a pig"s nose, and Carly tried to sing her way into the spotlight. (And truth be told, she wasn"t a very good singer...)

Ashley -- the 24-year-old hair stylist -- followed shortly and she awkwardly slipped a lucky penny into the Bachelor"s shoe. While Reegan, a cadaver tissue saleswoman, thought it would be fun to give Chris a gift from the heart -- aka a slimy, blood-covered human heart. (It was fake, but still... yuck!)

And how could we forget Tara? After showing off her country side to Chris, the "sports fishing enthusiast" raced inside, changed into a gown and snuck back into the limo to greet her guy again. "I want to show you that you can take the girl out of the country but you can"t take the country out of the girl," she told him with a heaping helping of cheesiness.

But perhaps the most cringe-worthy moment of them all was when Kaitlyn shocked Chris with a very forward offer. "I don"t know much about you," she admitted. "I know your name"s Chris. I know you are a farmer. And you can plow the f--k out of my field any day." Wow. Just... wow.

Hang in there Chris, we"d like to say that this is the end of the craziness, but unfortunately you"re just getting started.

Tell us: Which girl do you think had the worst first impression?

The Bachelor Keeps His Karaoke Country

THE BACHELOR “Most Memorable First Impressions”
by Alison Bonaguro 8 hours ago

The first sign I saw that the new season of The Bachelor was going to have a country vibe is that the actual bachelor is an actual farmer.

Not just like a hipster, I-grow-herbs-on-my-windowsill farmer. But an honest-to-goodness corn and soybean farmer. So much so, theyve dubbed him Prince Farming.

Chris Soules, 33, said on the premiere on Monday night (Jan. 5) that he hated having to do the show during the harvest, but thats just how much he wants to find love. That is something hes obviously not likely to do in his tiny hometown of Arlington, Iowa, population 427.

Then there were the little things in the three-hour premiere that pointed to a country-filled season. They had shots of Soules fishing. By a creek. With his dad. I mean, come on. His life is literally a country song.

And he drives a tractor. And yes, its sexy.

Soules also seems very committed to country music on social media. He isnt following many people on Twitter, but 15 of them are A-list country artists. And when one of the potential love hopefuls Jade, who I have dubbed Best for Last asked Soules what song hed choose if they went to a karaoke bar and wanted to sing a duet, this is what he said: It would have to be something county. It would be something Tim McGraw and Faith Hill.

No wonder 30 women are vying for his love.

5 Things We Loved/Hated About "Galavant"

Is Galavant Worth Your Time? - Channel Surfing Podcast

ABCs widely-promoted medieval comedy/musical Galavant had its debut last night and we watched intently. After all, the musical format has a spotty history on the small screen. Anyone remember Cop Rock? Of course, in recent years we have seenGlee succeed wonderfully so maybe Galavant has a chance.

Without any further ado, here are the 5 things we loved and hated in the first hour of the show:

1. The Songs (Mostly Hated) It started out pretty nice with an opening number that had an upbeat feel and did a nice job of telling some story and we loved the moments where the song gave us glimpses into Galavant (Joshua Sasse) and Madalenas (Mallory Jansen) love life but many of the other songs throughout the first hour felt forced and just served to slow down the story. The songs rarely advanced the plot and the lyrics really felt strained at times. But, the thing that really put the songs into the Hated column was that ABCs promotions department even used songs in the promos that ran in the Galvant commercial breaks. Shows like Christella and Last Man Standing were given musical promos that hammered the main Galavant theme into our head again and again and again. They just took it too far.

2. The Cast (Loved) Despite having to suffer through some dreadful songs, we are quickly falling in love with several of the characters. Timothy Omundsons King Richard is funny and reacts in unexpected ways to nearly everything. His captain of the guard, Gareth (Vinnie Jones), has wit and wisdom that are truly surprising coming from a brute and we enjoy seeing him interact with the kings tiny cook. It is clear that Galavant is eventually going to fall in love with the feisty Princess Isabella Lucia Maria Elizabeth (Karen David) because we already love her.

3. The Joust (Loved) When Galavant is exhausted from over-training and his rival Sir Jean Hamm (played with villainous gusto by John Stamos) is sick after being given a poison drink, we get treated to what is surely the most unexpected and funny jousting scene ever! The two knights are so weak, it seems to translate to their horses, who walk at snails pace toward each other. After a few excruciating moments, Galavant and Sir Hamm collapse to the ground. As an added bonus, Galavants pre-joust training with Princess Isabella is a fun and funny montage that was the best three minutes of the entire show.

4. The Script (Hated) Sigh sadly, we are having some trouble really falling for the overall story here. While we enjoyed the surprise that was Madalena picking fame and fortune as a queen over her true love, Galavant, the rest of the story has been pretty blaaah so far. Madalena has quickly turned into a cruel and evil character, and it just doesnt make sense that Galavant never knew that side of her when they were lovers. There were no unexpected twists or turns to pull us in and we yet arent connected to the characters enough to want to watch just to see what happens to them. If the show was just about the loopy King and his crazy Queen, wed be far more interested than we are right now.

5. The Humor (Hated) Most importantly, Galavant just isnt very funny. Aside from the joust scene, we barely cracked a smile for the rest of the first hour of Galavant. The show wants to be a cross between Monty Python and the Holy Grail and The Princess Bride (with singing added in), but it has thus far failed to bring any memorable humorous moments. We think it would be better served on a pay cable channel, where the humor could be even more risqu and bawdy, than the relatively tame world of 8 p.m. on Sunday night broadcast TV.

So, there you have it. There was more to hate than to love in Galavant, but we arent giving up on it yet. Well check it out again next week and hope it can improve. If nothing else, we give it props for trying something bold and new on broadcast TV. If it fails, at least it is failing with style!

CES 2015: Five things we learned Monday

This is the new Sony Walkman — CES 2015

Joe Clayton, president and CEO of Dish Network, makes an entrance at a Jan. 5 press conference at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Clayton unveiled details on its new streaming service with ESPN and Disney.(Photo: Tim Loehrke, USA TODAY)

The doors have yet to officially open, but there are plenty of lessons to absorb at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

As tech titans including Sony and Samsung attempted to dazzle CES attendees during Monday"s press day, here"s what we"ve learned on the unofficial first day.

1. The wearable market is blowing up. Wearable devices are everywhere: on your fingers, your wrists, your dog. Attendees can"t walk anywhere in Vegas without spotting a wearable computing device. As expected, smartwatches and trackers for your wrists were the hot items, but there were some other intriguing ones. Ring is a smart ring that lets users perform simple tasks such as controlling lights with hand gestures. Belkin unveiled a series of trackable motion sensors, including a keychain fob users can hand to their kids or attach to a pets" collar to track their activity.

2. Tech behind the wheel. Those dashboards are about to get a lot more sophisticated. Tech and automotive giants are speeding up efforts to add more tech features to your car. GM is adding new features to its OnStar in-vehicle service that can evaluate drivers" performance and predict when vital components need repair. But the highlight might be Nvidia"s Drive PX, a self-driving car platform where cars not only find their own parking spaces, but can return to you like an automated valet. Then there"s Hyundai, which will let users start their cars with their watch.

3. Brought to you by the letter K. As in 4K and 8K, high-definition resolutions hitting computer displays and televisions soon. TV makers and content companies are pushing to create 4K-quality programming ahead of the rush of compatible TVs to store shelves. If 4K isn"t enough, Sharp unveiled a "Beyond 4K" set that offers a resolution 167% better than the standard 4K display.

4. Cord cutters win again. Score one more for consumers ditching cable television. On the heels of newly announced stand-alone options from HBO and CBS, Dish Network unveiled Sling TV, a streaming service for $20 a month that will include a dozen live channels, including ESPN. It launches during the first quarter of 2015.

5. Chromecast not just for TVs. Speaking of cord cutting, one of the handy devices that has helped consumers transition away from cable is Google"s Chromecast, a dongle with HDMI input that streams Web video to TVs. Now, it"s got audio, adding services including Pandora and Rdio. Users must have a compatible speaker to cast audio.

Idina Menzel tells her critics to let it go

Idina Menzel - Creep (Radiohead Cover) (New York City 06/16/14)
NEW YORK, Jan. 5 (UPI) -- Idina Menzel responded to the people who criticized her after she botched the high note at the end of "Let It Go" during her New Year"s Eve performance.

She tweeted a previous interview in which she said not reaching every high note does not mean it was a bad performance.

"There are about 3 million notes in a two-and-a-half-hour musical," she said in the interview. "Being a perfectionist, it took me a long time to realize that if I"m hitting 75 percent of them, I"m succeeding."

"Celebrity Apprentice" 2015: Meet the cast

The Apprentice US Season 11 Episode 1 - Celebrity Apprentice

"Celebrity Apprentice"returns tonight with 16 new C-listers(and I"m being generous) competing in nominally business-related tasks to raise money for their respective charities, although the wins often come down to which contestants have the most pals willing to shell out major bucks for questionable foodstuffs.

I don"t have high hopes for this season, which was taped nearly a year ago and has been on NBC"s shelf ever since, but then again, I never expected to enjoy this show in the first place. NBC sent out the first half of the first episode for review; the challenge has the two teams making and selling pies. It"s a fairly typical brew of rampaging ego and second-guessing, with a special guest appearance by Cake Boss Buddy Valastro, who picks the best tasting pie for a special bonus.

This year"s cast is no better or worse then previous seasons, with the usual assortment of athletes, past-their-prime actors, and refugees from other reality shows. (Side note: I showed a photo of the cast to my husband, who, granted, once asked me in all seriousness, "What"s a Brangelina?" and he was only able to pick out Geraldo Rivera and Gilbert Gottfried, and mistook "The Deadliest Catch" star Sig Hansen for Gary Busey.)

Who are this year"s best bets? Based on my formula smarts times grace under pressure divided by craziness and the portion of the first episode available for viewing, I might Kay money onNew Jersey"s own Kevin Jonas,Olympic gymnast Shawn Johnson, and "Real Housewives of Atlanta" star Kenya Moore. Rivera may be the one bringing the nuts there"s a shot in the season preview of him rushing about in his undies, no pun intended. (Also look for a very uncomfortable exchange between Cosby kid Keshia Knight-Pulliam and Moore about Knight-Pulliam failing to call on Bill Cosby to donate.)

Who"s your favorite to take home $250,000 for his or her charity?

Ricky Martin Superfan Undergoes Plastic Surgery to Look Like His Idol

Ricky Martin - Adios (Spanish Version) (Official Video)

One superfan has gone to great lengths to look like his idol, singer Ricky Martin.

Fran Mariano, an Argentinian known for participating in the show Cuestion de Peso, subjected himself to more than half a dozen surgeries, and now he feels satisfied with the results. See pic here!

Speaking with the Argentinian newspaper Diario Show, Mariano explained, I operated my nose for the fourth time, had liposuction on my cheeks and with that same fat had lipo-transference in the cheekbones.

He continued, Then I took off the nasolabial folds from my face and they were filled with methacrylate as well as in the forehead. Also, I got a touch-up on the chin for the third time, for poor scarring I was operated [last Saturday] with [Dr.] Anibal Lotocki, and Im really happy with the changes that Im having.

Even though Mariano went through these extreme physical changes, he is still longing to find love. The reality is that every time I submit myself for surgery, I deposit many hopes and a lot of pain as well, for all the time that I felt different. However, no surgery fills the void I have."

He added, In fact I have spent all day crying, I think that I seek perfection in me, but I cannot find someone to love me.

So, Macklemore"s going to be a father

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis - The Heist (Full Album)

If his tastefor thrift shops is any indication, Macklemore will look right at home in dad jeans.

The Seattle rapper, also known as Ben Haggerty, and hisfiancee, Tricia Davis, announced they were expecting in a YouTube video that looks more like a movie trailer than a home video.

Producer Ryan Lewis, ever Macklemores right-hand man, helped edit the film.

Apparently, the pregnancy newsleaked a bit earlier than the couple intended. The New York Post reported Friday, spies in Las Vegas over New Years noticed Davis, in a loose-fitting black dress, wasnt drinking while out with Macklemore and pals.

If youre not drinking, youre pregnant, apparently.

The baby trailer addressed the rumor head on:

Today the media speculated about some big news in our life. So we decided to share it with you ourselves.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt"s Extraordinary Wife: Tasha McCauley

NEW | SKINNY: Actor Joseph-Gordon Levitt Weds Tasha McCauley

Joseph Gordon-Levitt, the Inception star who stole the hearts of millions of women across the U.S., is no longer an eligible bachelor. The 33-year-old married his girlfriend in secret at his Los Angeles home on December 20. Most fans know plenty about him, but little about his new wife, Tasha McCauley, and that has been by design.

Gordon-Levitt has stated that McCauley, who he has been dating since 2013, wishes for a quiet life out of the Hollywood limelight. In 2013, when interviewed by People, he explained his relative silence regarding his relationship.

I have a girlfriend but I tend not to really like to talk about it in public. The girl who Im with, she really doesnt want to be a part of that.

Its no surprise that he landed an extraordinary woman, and indeed he did. Tasha McCauley is a mixture of beauty, brains, and business skills. Tasha is the co-founder and the CEO of Fellow Robots. People reports that the company is based at NASA Research Park in Silicon Valley, California. Her intellect and skills include post-graduate degrees and a specialization in robotics. After earning her B.A. from Bard College and a graduate certificate in robotics from Singularity University (she went on to teach students about rapidly accelerating technologies there), McCauley earned an International Business Education and Research MBA from the University of Southern California in 2013.

The dark-haired beauty is multi-lingual; she reportedly speaks English, Spanish, and Arabic, and has traveled to Antarctica and Cuba. This type of cultural and educated woman is what Gordon-Levitt has been searching for. He has stated that hes always had a phobia of getting attention from girls for [being famous], according to People.

How does Tasha McCauley see herself? The new Mrs. Gordon-Levitt had some interesting insight in an interview with the Chicago Toy and Game Group.

Im the sum of many inputs, mostly arts and sciences, which can make for some surprising collisions. Im a skeptic and an optimist. I guess I should clarify that by skeptically, I dont mean cynically. Both are Greek in origin. Cynical, in early English, denoted fault-finding, while skeptical means to consider or examine. Im skeptical because I love pushing limits in order to understand how things really work. And Im optimistic because, so far in my life, the unknown has revealed many wonderful possibilities.

One of those wonderful possibilities has become being the new bride of one of Hollywoods most eligible bachelors! Congratulations to Gordon-Levitt, who selected a wife who has myriad exceptional qualities.

"The Beverly Hillbillies" Star Donna Douglas Dies

Interview with Donna Douglas

"The Beverly Hillbillies" star Donna Douglas died, her daughter-in-law confirmed to ABC News today.

She was 81.

Douglas, a native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, had roles in TV shows including "The Twilight Zone," "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet" and "Route 66." But she was best known for playing Elly May Clampett for nine seasons of the CBS sitcom, which she once said had "wonderful values."

"Elly May was like a slice out of my life. She is a wonderful little door opener for me because people love her, and they love the "Hillbillies,"" she told Confessions of a Pop Culture Addict. "People ask me if I got tired of it. I didnt. It was a joy doing it. It was really a blessing to me, and it was like you were being a blessing to people. You leave something good with people, on the screen or otherwise."

Douglas sued Mattel in 2011 for using her photo on an Elly May Barbie doll. They reportedly settled for undisclosed terms.

After the show ended in 1971, Douglas told the blog she wanted to focus on "family-type things," which led her to country singing and gospel singing. She also put out cookbooks and spoke at churches near her home in Louisiana.

"I wish I had more time to talk with people but you dont have much time. But that was my time of giving back," she told Confessions of a Pop Culture Addict. "That has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life."

Douglas is survived by a son, Danny Bourgeois.

Trash talk before the game made Cotton Bowl victory even sweeter for MSU

Michigan State Post Game Celebration 2015 Cotton Bowl
By Geoff Preston| Published 13 hours ago

Senior running back Jeremy Langford makes a touch down Jan. 1, 2015, during The Cotton Bowl Classic football game against Baylor at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The Spartans defeated the Bears and claimed the Cotton Bowl Victory, 42-41. Erin Hampton/The State News

It"s a moment that always brings fans to their feet and make the position players happy: when an offensive lineman scores a touchdown.

It happened in the Cotton Bowl, as LaQuan McGowan caught a touchdown in the third quarter to give Baylor a 41-21 lead in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic. The lineman weighs 390 pounds and his touchdown set off dancing in the stands and on the sidelines.

Except MSU"s.

"Who"s laughing now?" senior center Jack Allen said. "That guy can score as many touchdowns as he wants, he doesn"t have one of these."

He then pointed to a new "Cotton Bowl Champions" hat that he was wearing.

MSU came back to win the Cotton Bowl 42-41, and it was revealed after the game that there was tension between the two sides before kickoff. Both head coaches spoke of respect all week, and then Baylor defensive end Shawn Oakman talked about getting after junior quarterback Connor Cook and his lack of interest inBig Ten football.

"We don"t watch any Big Ten football," he said. "Why would we? It"s not interesting."

Cook responded before the game started.

"We"ll see what Big Ten football is about come Thursday," he said.

Defensive coordinator Pat Narduzzi said before the game there were some things that his team took exception to.

"I won"t talk too much about them," he said. "Let"s just say, we were upset going into the locker room before the game with some of the attitudes. Our kids have class and we won the game with class. We"ll leave it at that."

Not everyone got involved in the trash talk, Dantonio and Baylor head coach Art Briles both had very kind words about each other as men and the programs they run, even after the game.

"They played just like we thought they"d play," Briles said. "We thought they were a really good football team that played with a lot of poise."

Dantonio also said before the game he thought Baylor should have been a team that was selected for the College Football Playoff, he was just a complimentary of the Bears following the game.

"We just beat an outstanding team," he said. "And we came back to do it with girt really, just grit and guts and belief in each other."

Senior safety Kurtis Drummond said while the team noticed the celebration and reaction after McGowan"s score, they didn"t need to use it as motivation.

"We noticed it," he said. "But we"re self motivated. If you saw us gabbing at anyone we were really just trying to motivate each other."

Drummond said the pre-game chatter what just that, chatter.

"It"s part of football," he said. "You"re going to talk, and you"re going to try to get in people"s heads, credit to our guys and the kind of team we have that we were able to stay resilient and keep fighting."

Former Auburn Football Coach Gene Chizik To Be Defensive Coordinator at ...

Auburn Football 2014 - The Driven

Gene Chizik is back in the game.

According to a report from ESPN, former National Championship winning Auburn football coach Gene Chizik will be the defensive coordinator at North Carolina.

Chizik was the head coach of the Tigers from 2009-2012, and led the 2010 squad to a 13-0 record and captured the BCS National Championship.

That season, Chizik was named SEC Coach of the Year by the Associated Press, and won the Home Depot Coach of the Year Award, Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Award, Paul Bear Bryant Award and Bobby Bowden National Collegiate Coach of the Year Award.

However, things turned sour for Chizik and the Tigers, and he was fired following a 3-9 2012 season. Overall, Chizik was33-19 as the head coach at Auburn.

Chizik was hired to replace Tommy Tuberville at Auburn after compiling a 5-19 record in two seasons as the head coach at Iowa State. Prior to that, he was the defensive coordinator at Texas from 2005-07, at Auburn from 2002-04 and at UCF from 1998-2001. He also coached at Stephen F. Austin, Middle Tennessee State, and was a graduate assistant at Clemson.

From CBSSports.coms Tom Fornelli:

North Carolina fired its defensive coordinator, Vic Koenning, after the Tar Heels defense finished dead last in just about every major defensive category in the ACC, allowing a whopping 39 points per game this season.

So, to recap, Gene Chizik has gone from winning a national title at Auburn to North Carolinas defensive coordinator in only four seasons. Hes like the anti-Lane Kiffin at this point.

A national championship-winning head coach usually doesnt have to worry about becoming an assistant later in his career, however it isnt unprecedented. Dennis Erickson won multiple national titles with the Miami Hurricanes, but currently serves on the coaching staff at the University of Utah.

Chiziks return to coaching comes following a stint as an analyst on ESPNs SEC Network.

Missouri (11-3) won its third straight bowl game to reach 11 victories for the fourth time in school history.

Minnesota (8-5) trailed 19-17 entering the fourth quarter, but Missouri pulled away on Hansbroughs 78-yard touchdown run and Maty Mauks 7-yard scoring pass to Bud Sasser.

Mauk settled down to throw two TD passes after interceptions on the Tigers first two possessions.

The Tigers forced three turnovers.

Minnesota quarterback Mitch Leidner was 21 of 31 for 258 yards and a touchdown.

The Tigers used an onside kick to open the third quarter to stretch out their halftime lead to 13-7.

The Golden Gophers responded on the ensuing series with a 54-yard touchdown pass from Leidner to tight end Maxx Williams. Williams leaped over cornerback Aarion Penton and stepped over another defender before diving into the end zone.

But Missouri quickly answered, needing just three plays after a muffed Minnesota punt for Mauk to give the Tigers a 19-14 lead on an 18-yard touchdown run.

It tightened to 19-17 by the start of in the fourth quarter before Hansbrough got free and rumbled for his score that put the Tigers up by nine with 9:28 to play.

Missouri survived a disastrous offensive start to lead 10-7 at halftime in a game that started with the teams combining for three turnovers in the first 4 minutes.

Missouris Mauk opened the game by being picked off by Derrick Wells on the Tigers third play from scrimmage. Minnesota would give it right back, though, when Leidner fumbled after being sandwiched in the backfield by defensive ends Markus Golden and Shane Ray.

The Tigers then went just four more plays before Mauks pass was intercepted for the second time, this time in the end zone by Briean Boddy-Calhoun.

The Gophers finally ended the drought on the ensuing series, capping an 11-play, 80-yard drive with a 20-yard touchdown run by Rodrick Williams.

It was part of a bruising first quarter that saw Minnesota gain 76 yards on the ground.

That was flipped in the second quarter, as the Tigers used its own rushing attack to set up the passing game.

First, following a punt, they used their best starting field position of the half to get on the board with Andrew Baggetts 21-yard field goal.

Mauk then made the best of Missouris final possession of the half, finding Bud Sasser for a 25-yard touchdown strike.

In all, the Tigers outgained the Gophers 156-41 in the second quarter.

Winter Classic 2015: Score and Twitter Reaction from Blackhawks vs. Capitals

Billy Idol - White Wedding - Winter Classic 2015

In one of the most exciting and dramatic Winter Classic games of all time, the Washington Capitals defeated the Chicago Blackhawks on New Year"s Day at Nationals Park by a score of 3-2.

The Caps won in dramatic fashion, as forward Troy Brouwer beat his former team by scoring with just 12.9 seconds remaining in the game in front of 42,832 fans, according to ESPN NHL:

With the win, Washington also reversed a long-running trend of home teams struggling in outdoor games, per ESPN Stats & Info:

Washington sports fans have grown accustomed to watching the Washington Nationals baseball team compete at Nationals Park, but Caps personnel did a fantastic job transforming the ballpark into an NHL facility, as seen in this photo courtesy of Nats reliever Drew Storen:

The photo also illustrates just how sunny it was, which was a major concern entering Thursday"s game. According to ESPN.comnews services, there was some thought given to delaying the game in order to get the sun under control.

However, NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly wanted to avoid that if possible.

"Nobody wants to delay the game," Daly told ESPN.com. "So if there"s any way we can avoid delaying the game, we"re going to avoid delaying the game."

Daly"s preference ultimately won out, and the festivities kicked off at 1 p.m. ET as scheduled with the caveat that the Capitals and Blackhawks would switch ends midway through the first period, per ESPN NHL:

That was done in order to ensure that the teams were on a level playing field and that neither gained any type of advantage due to the sun.

One player who took steps to combat the sunny conditions was Capitals defenseman Karl Alzner, who opted to wear sunglasses, according to SportsCenter:

When the game officially got underway, the temperature was a bit higher than it has traditionally been in past Winter Classic games, as pointed out by SI NHL:

After the usual feeling-out process for the first several minutes of the game, the hometown Caps struck first just over seven minutes into the contest.

A tough bounce of the puck on choppy ice past Hawks defenseman Brent Seabrook allowed Capitals forward Eric Fehr to go in all alone against goaltender Corey Crawford.

Fehr made no mistake as he tucked it past Crawford for his 11th goal of the season. According to NHL.com"s Dan Rosen, Winter Classic glory has become commonplace for the 29-year-old winger:

In fact, that goal made Fehr the all-time leading goal scorer in outdoor-game history, per NHL Public Relations:

Less than two minutes after the mandatory side change, the Capitals struck once again. After stopping a shot from Washington defenseman Mike Green, Crawford was beaten once again as superstar winger Alex Ovechkin lit the lamp for the 18th time this season.

The puck was right in the wheelhouse of the three-time Hart Trophy winner, and there was little chance of The Great Eight misfiring, according to Chris Johnston of Sportsnet:

With the Capitals leading 2-0, the crowd celebrated raucously. It was clear that the Blackhawks needed to turn things around quickly, and that is exactly what they did.

Caps forward Nicklas Backstrom was whistled for holding Blackhawks center Jonathan Toews at the 13:29 mark, and Chicago made Washington pay a mere seven seconds later when Patrick Sharp scored a power-play goal to make it 2-1.

Duncan Keith and Patrick Kane assisted on Sharp"s seventh tally of the season, and Sharp entered the outdoor record books in the process, per Christopher Kamka of SportsNet Chicago:

That was the extent of the scoring in what was an exciting first period, and the Caps entered the locker room with a 2-1 lead.

According to SI NHL, neither team struggled to generate offensive chances during the opening stanza:

The second period began with the Capitals pressing forward, and they very nearly scored twice in the early going. After netting a goal in the first period, Ovechkin proceeded to hit the post two times near the beginning of the second:

Chicago was clearly leading a charmed life after those two near-misses, and its great fortune improved even more just three minutes into the frame, as winger Brandon Saad beat Capitals backstop Braden Holtby to knot the contest at 2-2.

The goal was a picture-perfect one. Toews took a feed from Marian Hossa before dishing a great pass to Saad, who put the puck in a wide-open net. It was the definition of a tic-tac-toe play, although the Hawks did benefit from a Capitals miscue, according to Stephen Whyno ofThe Canadian Press:

Toews" assist also continued a record-breaking trend as he became the all-time leading NHL outdoor scorer, per Mark Lazerus of theChicago Sun-Times:

With momentum on their side, the Blackhawks had a great chance to seize the lead nearly halfway through the second period, as a pair of minor penalties to the Capitals" Tom Wilson and John Carlson gave Chicago a five-on-three power play for 1:29.

The Hawks were unable to capitalize, though, and the two teams entered the third period with the score tied 2-2.

Play was even for much of the final frame, but the Capitals had a chance to regain the lead when Blackhawks forward Andrew Shaw was called for tripping Joel Ward 8:21 into the period.

It was only Washington"s second power play of the game as opposed to five for Chicago, but the Hawks weathered the storm by killing it off and keeping the score tied.

Things seemed to be trending toward overtime in the closing minutes of the third, but the Blackhawks were given a shot to win in regulation when defenseman Matt Niskanen was called for boarding Shaw.

As pointed out by Mike Ashmore ofThe Trentonian, it was an undisciplined play on the part of the Washington blueliner:

With the Caps" penalty about to expire, the officials evened things out a bit by sending Toews to the box on a questionable hooking callwith1:13 left, per Mike Harrington ofThe Buffalo News:

That penalty proved to be a deadly one for the Blackhawks, as the Capitals took advantage with 12.9 seconds remaining in the game. With just seconds remaining on the clock, former Hawks forward Brouwer scored a power-play goal, and it proved to be the game-winner.

While Brouwer was the one who beat Crawford, Ovechkin made the play happen. He carried the puck into the zone before having his stick slashed out of his hands.

Brouwer picked up the loose puck and fired it into the back of the net to send the Caps fans home happy.

Not only was the win a big one for the Capitals in terms of the Winter Classic"s prestige, but it also moved them up to third place in the Eastern Conference"s Metropolitan Division and solidified their current playoff positioning.

Chicago missed out on a chance to extend its lead over the St. Louis Blues in the Central Division, but it remains the No. 2 team in the Western Conference with 52 points.

There is always something extra special about the Winter Classic, and the manner in which this one ended made it that much better. Both teams will try and build on the game and continue to make their push for the postseason.

Edward Herrmann, the versatile, honey-voiced actor whose roles included patricians and politicians such as Gilmore Girls father Richard Gilmore, The Practice law professor Anderson Pearson and President Franklin D. Roosevelt, has died. He was 71.

Herrmann passed away Wednesday at a hospital in New York. The cause of death was a brain tumor, according to his manager, Robbie Kass.

Besides being an accomplished actor, was also a true gentleman and a scholar, as well as being an incredibly kind and decent man. He will be sorely missed, Kass told CNN.

My friend Ed Herrmann was the kindest, classiest, most talented man. It was an honor and a joy to know him, a devastating blow to lose him, tweeted Lauren Graham, who starred as Lorelai Gilmore in Gilmore Girls.

Over a career that stretched over more than four decades, Herrmann was rarely the star but always a standout.

In a 1980 episode of M*A*S*H, he played a visiting surgeon who starts out confident and polished but cant keep up with the pace. In St. Elsewhere, he had a recurring role as Father Joseph McCabe, the sturdy founder of St. Eligius, the shows hospital, who offered guidance to a future doctor. The latter role earned him two Emmy nominations.

And then there was Richard Gilmore, the blue-blooded father of Lorelai Gilmore, whose snappy dialogue often with his daughter or his wife (Kelly Bishop) couldnt hide his big heart, especially when it came to his granddaughter Rory, played by Alexis Bledel.

That relationship was reflected in real life, he told the A.V. Club in 2012.

I was sort of delegated from time to time to look after her, and I was very, very fond of her, he said, noting that Bledel had a number of challenges her first years on the show. One summer, I thought, Shes not going to make it. Shes going to burn out. But then she went to Italy with a friend to learn cooking, and I thought, Shes going to be fine.

Herrmann had his star turns as well. He was nominated twice for Emmys for his portrayal of FDR, first in the TV movie Eleanor and Franklin (1976) and then in the next years Eleanor and Franklin: The White House Years. (He also played Roosevelt in the 1982 movie version of Annie.)

He won a Tony for his performance in a 1976 revival of George Bernard Shaws Mrs. Warrens Profession. His performance in The Practice led to his only Emmy win.

Even people who didnt recognize him probably knew his mellifluous voice from audiobooks and History Channel documentaries.

But, in general, he was content to be a supporting performer, one of the esteemed and distinctive cadre of performers thought of as character actors. He went easily from role to role his Internet Movie Database page includes 130 credits, including small spots in American Dad, 30 Rock and Drop Dead Diva and he reveled in the work.

In the A.V. Club interview, he expresses enthusiasm for almost everything he appeared in. His co-stars are often great or wonderful, and he has kind words for forgotten films such as Harrys War and his appearance in the maligned 2011 comedy Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star.

Sometimes Im stuck in a straitjacket with suits, playing Alger Hiss and Roosevelt and so on, and I said, These guys are really wonky, and theyre where the kids are these days, so do it! Whats the matter with you? he said. I had a great time.

Recently, Herrmann had been playing Lionel Deerfield in The Good Wife.

He is survived by his wife and two daughters.
