Tony Awards 2016: Best play, musical nominees, reviews

One on One Interview with Tony Awards 2016 Host James Corden (THE LATE LATE SHOW, CARPOOL KARAOKE)

NEW YORK Yes it will win and yes, it should win because amid all the hype and ludicrous ticket prices,Lin-Manuel Mirandas Hamilton is extraordinary and the years best musical.

The hip-hop infused story of the rise and fall of Alexander Hamilton has rightly been called a reinvention of the form, but like all successful challenges to the expected, it pays homage to what has come before, giving us lovely, haunting balladry as well as drop the mic rap battles and wicked rhymes.

Thats not to say that there arent others deserving of an A in this years class of nominees the soulful charmer that is Waitress, for one, a production buoyed by the warmth of the siren-voiced Jessie Mueller as a hash slinger and pie maker at a local diner with a heart of gold and a bun in the over,

In contention for best play, is another female-centered work Eclipsed, by Danai Gurira, heretofore best known as Michonne, a woman who knows her way around a samurai sword in The Walking Dead. The searing political drama starring Oscar-winning actressLupita Nyongo features similarly fierce women captive wives of a rebel officer during the Second Liberian Civil War and glitters with flashes of malicious humor. Its also the first Broadway play written by, directed by, and starring women. Alongside the genre-busting Hamilton, it feels like a creative revolution.
