Jesse Williams" speech at the BET Awards shows he ain"t scared of white people

Last nights BET Awards ceremony kicked off with a rousing, surprise performance by Beyonc. The Lemonade artist opened her rendition of Freedom with a quote from Martin Luther King, Jr.s I Have A Dream. As her dancers marched through the aisles, Kings words rang out: When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note ... This note was a promise that all men, yes, black men as well as white men, would be guaranteed the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Beyonc continued to stun attendees and viewers, dipping into a wading pool to unleash some choreography that utilized the water around her in the fiery landscape. Later, she was joined by Kendrick Lamar, whos featured on the album track.

Kings powerful words and Beyoncs voice would not be the only ones to ring out in the Microsoft Theater that night, as Greys Anatomy star Jesse Williams gave a speech for the new generation of activists when accepting the Humanitarian Award. Williams activism includes working with Black Lives Matter, a movement that Beyoncs also openly supported. When the actor took the stage, he invoked the memories of Tamir Rice, Rekia Boyd, Eric Garner, Sandra Bland, and Dorian Hunt, concluding:

Weve been floating this country on credit for centuries, yo. And were done watching and waiting while this invention called whiteness uses and abuses us, burying black people out of sight and out of mind while extracting our culture, our dollars, our entertainment, like oil, black gold. Ghettoizing and demeaning our creations, then stealing them, gentrifying our genius, and then trying us on like costumes, before discarding our bodies like rinds of strange fruit.

The thing is though, the thing is, that just because were magic doesnt mean were not real.

The show was also marked by a series of performances honoring Princes legacy. Sheila E., Jennifer Hudson, and The Roots were among the artists who saluted The Purple One.

My Reaction To Jesse Williams Speech at BET Awards | Brief Talk About Prince Tribute

Actor Jesse Williams brought the energy of a civil rights rally to the BET Awards Sunday night as he accepted the humanitarian award, demanding equal rights and calling for an end to police brutality against black people and white appropriation of black culture.

The "Grey"s Anatomy" star brought the Microsoft Theater audience to its feet with his passionate speech.

"A system built to impoverish, divide and destroy us cannot stand if we do," he said, adding, "We know that police somehow manage to deescalate, disarm and not kill white people every day."

Williams compared spending money on brand-name clothing to the days when slaves were branded with their owners" markings. He said it"s not the job of the brutalized to comfort the bystander.

"We"re done watching and waiting while this invention called whiteness uses and abuses us, burying black people out of sight and out of mind while extracting our culture, our dollars, our entertainment like oil, black gold, ghettoizing and demeaning our creations then stealing them, gentrifying our genius and then trying us on like costumes before discarding our bodies like rinds of strange fruit," he said.

Backstage, Williams said he hopes his remarks during the show remind people "just because we get to be here tonight doesn"t mean we made it.

"What I"d like to see us do is return to a space where it"s OK for folks to be proud and outwardly black in public," he said, "and not have to feel like we have to be safe to live in white spaces and to make everybody comfortable when we"ve spent centuries being uncomfortable. It"s time to shed that fear."
