U.S. Open leaderboard 2016: Bubba Watson, Lee Westwood in striking distance after 1st rounds

Andrew Landry has the lead, but some talented players are on his heels.

OAKMONT, Pennsylvania Andrew Landry is the improbable leader at the U.S. Open on Friday morning, having finished his first round at 4-under after weather delayed him overnight. But Landry has some of the world"s best players not far behind him.

There"s not a lot of symmetry at Oakmont right now, because rain has split the first round over two days. Landry finished early, but half the field still hasn"t wrapped up. So while Landry leads after his own first round, he may or may not hold that through Friday, when the first round finally ends a bit after lunchtime and then the second round gets underway.

But for the moment, Landry"s narrowly holding off Lee Westwood and Scott Piercy, each a stroke back of him at 3-under. Westwood is in the clubhouse, while Piercy"s still moving around the course. Shane Lowry, Ethan Tracy and Gary Stal are next in line at 2-under, followed by a wide grouping of 1-under competitors that includes Bubba Watson, Danny Lee, Dustin Johnson, Ernie Els, Jim Furyk, Justin Rose and Adam Scott. There"s quite a bit of talent within three shots of the lead.

Furyk and Watson, if they keep up their strong play, might become real gallery favorites as the week goes on. Furyk has roots in western Pennsylvania, and Watson became a darling here in 2007, when he finished 9-over and earned his first (and still only) top-five finish at a U.S. Open.
