SEC Championship Game 2015: Date, Start Time for Alabama vs. Florida

Alabama-Florida: SEC Championship Hype Video | CampusInsiders

Butch Dill/Associated Press

The No. 2-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide secured their spot in the SEC title game with a 29-13 win over the Auburn Tigers in the Iron Bowl on Saturday. For a moment, it looked as if the Tigers might have upset on their minds. Bama led 12-6 at the break before pulling away for the victory in the second half.

The Crimson Tide rode running back Derrick Henry to victory. He carried the ball a school-record 46 times as the Tide pounded Auburn into submission. The Florida Gators will oppose Alabama in the SEC Championship Game.

When: Saturday, December 5 at 4 p.m. ET

TV: CBS

The Gators wrapped up the SEC East weeks ago, but few will give them a chance against Alabama.

After struggling to beat the Florida Atlantic Owls last week, Florida"s offense was stymied by the defense of No. 12-ranked Florida State Seminoles on Saturday. The Gators were crushed 27-2.

With their hopes of making the College Football Playoff dashed, the Gators will have to find motivation to beat the best team they will have played all season.

Players to Watch

Jake Coker

Florida will do everything in their power to make Jake Coker beat them. We"ve seen how dominant Bama"s running game can be when it"s clicking. If Florida can hold up at the line of scrimmage, Coker will be forced to convert some difficult third downs.

He completed 17 of 26 passes against Auburn for 176 yards. That included a 34-yard strike to ArDarius Stewart. Alabama doesn"t need Coker to throw for 300 yards. He just has to protect the football and make a few plays on third down.

If that happens, Bama can beat Floridaeven if the latter is at its best.

Treon Harris

Florida"s offense has looked bad in the last two weeks. Truth be told, Treon Harris isn"t much of a QB. He"s an athlete playing the position. He seems to struggle to see downfield, and his accuracy has left a lot to be desired as well. Thomas Goldkamp of 247Sports is baffled by Harris" play on Saturday against the Seminoles:

Heading into the Florida State game, Harris had thrown four interceptions in his last three games. Without question, Florida will go down hard if he turns the ball over against Alabama.

This one could turn into a blowout even if Harris protects the ball; but if the Gators are to have any chance to win, their front seven has to hold against Bama"s run game, and Harris has to find a way to manufacture some offense.

Prediction

There"s always a way for a team to lose, but it really doesn"t seem likely in this case for Alabama. They are the better team on both sides of the ball.

When you look at Bama"s defense, which has allowed a total of 25 points in its last three games, and match it against Florida"s offense, which has scored an average of 13.25 points in its last four contests, the choice is clear.

Alabama will romp its way into the CFP with an SEC Championship Game win.

MINEOLA, N.Y. Nicki Minaj"s older brother has been accused of raping a child younger than 13 several times between April and November.

Jelani Maraj, 37, of Baldwin, was arraigned Thursday in a Long Island hospital on charges of first-degree rape and first-degree sexual conduct against a child, a Nassau County court official said.

He was arrested on Tuesday but suffered an unknown medical condition that required him to be arraigned two days later at Nassau University Medical Center.

It was not immediately clear if Maraj entered a plea, but he was released on $100,000 bail. His New York City attorney did not return repeated telephone calls seeking comment on Friday.

Investigators wrote in court documents that the victim was younger than 13 and that Maraj raped the child several times. Some details in the court documents were blacked-out by a judge.

A spokesman for the district attorney"s office declined to comment on the allegations.

Minaj, who won two American Music Awards last month for favorite artist and album-rap/hip-hop, did not immediately comment through a representative.

Minaj, who turns 33 next week, was born on Trinidad as Onika Maraj and was raised in Queens.

She attended her brother"s wedding to fiance Jacqueline Robinson in August on Long Island, according to her Instagram, which shows her, in a form-fitting red dress, hugginghim and her parents.

"Jelani, I love u more than you"ll ever comprehend," herpost on one picture read.

"I would cross the ocean for u. I would go & bring u the moon. Promise u. For u I will. I love my brother so much man," read the post on another picture.

She expressed her love, and the pictures generated hundreds of thousands of likes, but the comments section quickly filled up with vitriol directed at her and her brother.

Birthday wishes for Frank Sinatra

Frank Sinatra, My Way, With Lyrics

She blushed. Looked down. Smiled shyly. In an instant, decades vanished. It was 1944. As she told and retold the story, a mature woman was suddenly a giddy, giggly girl. She lived inside the memory, happily and often. And my memory of her memory warms me to this day: My mom, the bobbysoxer. And Frank Sinatra.

Only seven years after the man dubbed The Voice turned my mom-to-be swoony and woozy at New Yorks Paramount Theaterthe day immortalized by New York media as The Columbus Day Riothe pivoted westward to debut at the Desert Inn in 1951. Two years later, hed make the Sands his headquarters and Las Vegas his sandboxand through his swingin endorsement, the worlds playground.

Merely twobut my favorite twoof the reasons to be grateful for the legend later crowned Chairman of the Board and Ol Blue Eyes, who wouldve turned 100 on Dec. 12 and is the de facto Godfather of Vegas Entertainment. Compelling cases can be made that Elvis Presley and Liberace should share that honor. In fact, Liberace arrived here in 1944 and made the city his home. Presley showed up in 1956 and has long been our most caricatured icon.

Yet Sinatra is this towns ultimate historical ambassador because he embodied what the city is to virtually everyonea pipeline to the pleasure center of the brain. The id unleashed.

Sinatra didnt just perform in Vegas. He inhaled it. With fellow Rat Packers Dino, Sammy, Joey and Peter, he smashed the formalities of entertainment here. Within a loose structure, they largely made it up as they went along onstage before an audience that included a dashing president-to-be. Then, rather than disappear behind the curtain, they invaded the casinos, tossing dice, dealing cards, schmoozing crowds, guzzling booze, keeping the town awake 24/7most famously during production of 1960s Oceans 11, filming all day and prowling all night. All with Sinatra as the hepcat and top dog.

Other stars were Vegas performers. Some were also Vegas partiers. Sinatra was a Vegas bacchanal. He made this cityespecially for those of us obsessed with the entertainment industrya must-visit destination. Or, in my case, a must-live imperative, still a live-wire thrill for me nearly 20 years after my U-Haul van pulled up.

I thank Frank for that big-picture gift. So should everyone who happily and hungrily indulges their appetites here. But I thank him even more for the small gift of allowing me to watch my mother grow younger before my eyes.

Traveling back through time to that theater on Broadway when the Sinatra swell of popularity engorged into a tidal wave, my mom would become a girl of 21 again, flush with euphoria. Describing being one little ripple in the sea of bobbysoxers, nearly fainting as the singer crooned Ill Never Smile Againhis skinny frame seemingly invisible behind the microphone standsent new goose bumps down her arm with each retelling.

Sinatra gave me what no yellowing old photo ever could: the dewy, vibrant woman she was long before I came along. Whenever that memory possessed her anew, she glowed, as if inside a tingling force field of golden yesterdays. For thatand for giving this city its beating heartthanks, Mr. S. In Frank-speak, have a swingin, cuckoo birthday, baby.

Forth Road Bridge closed to traffic over structural faults

What should we call the Jihadist group? BBC News
Image copyright PA Image caption The bridge has been closed to all traffic since midnight

The Forth Road Bridge has been completely closed to traffic to allow repairs to structural faults.

Transport minister Derek Mackay said it was too early to say how long it would be closed but it would be "not just today".

The total closure came into force at midnight with initial guidance it would remain shut for at least 24 hours.

Early on Friday morning, 11 mile tailbacks have been reported approaching the Kincardine Bridge.

The southbound carriageway had been shut since the discovery of steelwork defects during inspections on Tuesday.

Since then engineers have identified eight other parts of the bridge where similar problems could be encountered.

If you don"t need to travel, then it"s probably best that you don"tSpokeswoman, ScotRail

Mr Mackay told the BBC Good Morning Scotland programme: "Ministers are meeting again by teleconference this morning with further advice on what the repair plan looks like.

"I"ll be able to say more about that later today. I don"t want to give a timescale only to change it within a few hours.

"It"s not going to be just today."

The closure decision was taken late on Thursday after the latest reports indicated the faults were more serious than had earlier been thought.

Mr Mackay added: "It"s important, on the expert advice we"ve had, that we get access to the site.

"It"s quite a restricted and difficult to access area to look at the repairs that are required.

"There"s a complete bridge closure because the advice we"ve been given is that continuing to have traffic flowing across the bridge will cause further damage."

Officials had earlier spoken of putting a "temporary fix" in place before longer term repairs were undertaken.

In a statement Transport Scotland said: "A full closure of the bridge is being put into effect after midnight on Thursday December 3, 2015.

"The Forth Road Bridge is to shut following the discovery of defective steelwork earlier this week.

"The decision has been taken as a precautionary step after inspections carried out earlier this week showed a fault in the bridge steelwork.

"The results of earlier inspections will continue to be analysed overnight."

Rail congestion

Since Tuesday vehicles have been using the northbound carriageway only with a contraflow system in place.

The restrictions on one of Scotland"s major transport routes led to major disruption with long tailbacks affecting commuters on Wednesday and Thursday.

The rail operator has warned that trains crossing the Forth are likely to be exceptionally busy.

A ScotRail spokeswoman said: "We are working to see what we might be able to do to add more capacity to what is already an extremely busy route.

"However, even if we do manage to add carriages or services in the area, trains are likely to be incredibly busy at peak travel times.

"So if you don"t need to travel, then it"s probably best that you don"t."

Image copyright Aerial View Scotland Troubled waters

Before the bridge was opened by the Queen on 4 September 1964, cars could only get across the Forth on a ferry.

So the Forth Road Bridge, which at the time was the fourth biggest suspension bridge in the world and the longest outside the United States, was welcomed as an engineering marvel.

It transformed the journey between Edinburgh and Fife and from the north of Scotland to the south.

Traffic on the crossing grew steadily and it now carries 24 million vehicles across the Forth every year - far more than it was originally designed to handle.

But its reputation for engineering excellence has been tarnished over the years by traffic congestion and maintenance problems.

Read more on the troubles of the Forth Road Bridge

Now more than 50 years old, the planned traffic capacity of the bridge is regularly exceeded, shortening its projected lifespan.

Concern about corrosion of the main suspension cables, first confirmed more than a decade ago, prompted ministers to order a new crossing.

A new 1.4bn Queensferry Crossing over the Firth of Forth is due to open in December next year.

Markets slide in US and Europe after stimulus falls short

L.A. TIMES.MEDIA/BACK IN BUISNESS 2013

Global markets sank Thursday after the European Central Bank announced stimulus plans that came up short of what investors had forecast. The bond market was especially roiled by the ECB"s move. Bond prices in the U.S. and Europe fell sharply, and yields jumped.

The Dow Jones industrial average lost 252.01 points, or 1.4 percent, to 17,477.67. The Standard & Poor"s 500 index fell 29.89 points, or 1.4 percent, to 2,049.62 and the Nasdaq composite fell 85.70 points, or 1.7 percent, to 5,037.53. The selling pushed the S&P 500 back into the red for 2015.

The ECB"s stimulus plans, long awaited, came in with a thud on Thursday. The ECB announced a slight cut in one of its key interest rates in an attempt to stimulate lending and help a modest economic recovery. Investors had expected to see the ECB step up its monthly purchases of bonds as well.

Financial markets were expecting the ECB to do `whatever it takes" to stimulate inflation, and instead the ECB did `maybe what it"ll take" to stimulate inflation, said Guy LeBas, head of fixed income at Janney Montgomery Scott.

Europe"s economy has lagged behind the U.S. since the financial crisis, and policymakers have struggled to keep the 19 countries that use the euro from falling into deflation or an economic contraction. But the President of the ECB, Mario Draghi, has been far more aggressive than his predecessors in trying new ways to boost the economy, including its current program of negative interest rates and bond buying. Expectations were high for this week"s meeting.

In the last couple of years, Mario Draghi and the ECB would typically over-deliver on what they indicated they would do to help stimulate the economy. So a lot of investors overbought bonds on expectations that Draghi would over-deliver. This time, he didn"t, and he disappointed the market quite a bit, said Bob Michele, head of global fixed income at JPMorgan Asset Management.

The ECB"s announcement caused the euro to jump 3 percent against the dollar, a large move for currencies, to $1.0975. Investors had been betting against the euro ahead of the announcement, expecting that more central bank stimulus would put pressure on the currency. Investors had to unwind those positions, causing Thursday"s oversized moved in the currency market.

People aren"t sure where to put their money so everyone just went to cash, said J.J. Kinahan, chief strategist at TD Ameritrade.

European stocks also had one of their worst days in months. Germany"s DAX plunged 3.6 percent, its biggest drop since September. France"s CAC-40 index lost 3.6 percent and the U.K.s FTSE lost 2.3 percent.

With the ECB not expanding stimulus as much as expected, European bond prices fell sharply, sending yields higher. If the ECB had announced more stimulus, it would have had the effect of putting downward pressure on interest rates. The yield on the 10-year German government bond soared 0.20 percentage points to 0.67 percent, a massive move in the bond market. The yield on the 10-year French government bond rose 0.20 percentage points to 0.99 percent, also a substantial move.

The sell-off in the dollar also impacted U.S. Treasuries. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note jumped to 2.32 percent, up sharply from 2.18 percent the day before.

Investors now turn to back to the U.S. While the ECB is easing policy, the Federal Reserve looks set to raise interest rates later this month for the first time in nine years. In comments Wednesday, Fed Chair Janet Yellen gave an upbeat assessment of the economy"s progress since the Fed"s last meeting in October, describing it as in line with its expectations for the labor market and inflation. She also was careful to point out the need to review upcoming data, including the U.S. jobs report Friday.

Economists forecast that U.S. employers created 200,000 jobs in November, and the unemployment rate remained steady at 5 percent.

In other markets, benchmark U.S. crude jumped $1.14, or 2.9 percent, to close at $41.08 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Brent crude, which is used to set prices for international oils, climbed $1.35, or 3.2 percent, to $43.84 a barrel in London.

Heating oil rose 5.4 cents to $1.359 a gallon, wholesale gasoline rose 0.3 cent to $1.296 a gallon and natural gas rose 1.6 cents to $2.181 per thousand cubic feet.

In metals, gold rose $7.40, or 0.7 percent, to $1,061.20 an ounce, silver rose seven cents to $14.08 an ounce and copper rose three cents to $2.06 a pound.
