Report: Colts, Cardinals also tried to claim Ben Tate

AP

The Vikings landed running back Ben Tate on waivers Wednesday to bolster their backfield with Matt Asiata and Jerick McKinnon both missing practice because of injuries this week, but they werent the only ones reportedly interested in bringing the former Browns runner on board.

Teams that make unsuccessful waiver claimsare not immediately disclosed by the league any longer, but Field Yates of ESPN.comreports that two other teams made bids to add Tate to their roster. Per Yates, the Colts and Cardinals were the other interested parties.

Neither names comes as much of a surprise. The Colts lost Ahmad Bradshaw to a fractured fibula in last weeks game and placed him on season-ending injured reserve this week, leaving Trent Richardson and Dan Herron as the only running backs on the teams 53-man roster this season.

Arizona, meanwhile, hasnt found a strong complement to Andre Ellington in their backfield this season. Jonathan Dwyer was set for that role, but he was released in the wake of a domestic violence arrest early in the season and neither Stepfan Taylor nor Marion Grice has done much in reserve the rest of the way.

Armour: Roger Goodell and Adrian Peterson clearly need to talk

Embattled running back Adrian Peterson spoke to USA TODAY Sports' Tom Pelissero in an exclusive interview Thursday.

00:02 Adrian Peterson passed on talking and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell 00:06 the leaks outside experts last week. But he did talk extensively 00:10 with me on Thursday. He said he's reconnect with a four 00:14 year old son who he injured while discipline them in May. 00:17 He hopes to see that son in person soon and you'll 00:20 never uses switch. On one of his children again. But also 00:24 talk some football Peterson said he's in great shape has been 00:27 working Allah personal trainer and still holds out hope of playing 00:30 this season for the vikings are right now. Its primary focus 00:34 on getting his life back to normal. And it is family 00:37 back together. Peterson was clearly not happy with you Dell's decision 00:42 to not only criticize his supposed lack of meaningful remorse. But 00:45 also to put that in a letter that was made public. 00:48 In announcing the suspension on Tuesday. Peterson said he immediately apologized 00:53 to avoid that he has expressed remorse. Roger Goodell has sworn he'll do whatever it takes to "get it right" when it comes to the NFL's handling of domestic abuse cases.

Here's his chance.

In a wide-ranging interview with USA TODAY Sports' Tom Pelissero on Thursday night, Adrian Peterson repeatedly expressed remorse, both for whipping his young son and other choices he's made as a parent.

Peterson said he's working with both a therapist and a pastor who is certified in counseling. He said he's willing to sit down with the NFL commissioner and tell him all of this and probably more.

So now it's Goodell's turn.

Arrange a meeting with Peterson and the NFLPA and work together to figure out an adequate and appropriate punishment that won't prompt another flurry of court filings or drag this ugly mess into next year. Because not only is Goodell's heavy-handed way of handling things not any better than his previous indifference, it's not doing anybody any good: Peterson, the Minnesota Vikings or the NFL.

Yes, revisiting Peterson's suspension so quickly would require Goodell to set aside some of his ego. In suspending Peterson for the rest of the season earlier this week, Goodell seemed to be as much in a snit over the running back not kowtowing to his disciplinary process as he was Peterson beating his son.

But this isn't about Goodell. It's not really even about Peterson, either. Or Ray Rice or Greg Hardy.

It's about finding common ground so the NFL can give victims of domestic abuse and sexual violence the support and protection they need while making sure players get the treatment and education necessary so they never commit these heinous crimes again. Or, better yet, don't commit them in the first place.

That's what matters that's all that matters. But the acrimony and distrust between the NFL and the union has made compromise seemingly impossible, and the result is suspensions that are little more than smokescreens (from the NFL) and self-righteous indignation that is misplaced (from the union).

Both can do better. They must.

Unless, that is, they'd rather spend the next several months squabbling in legal showdowns.

Vikings claim Ben Tate on waivers

Updated: November 20, 2014, 10:52 AM ET

ESPN.com news servicesVikings Claim Tate On Waivers

The Minnesota Vikings claimed running back Ben Tate on waivers Wednesday from the Cleveland Browns.

More from ESPN.com

The Vikings may use Ben Tate mostly in goal-line and passing situations, where he can be a between-the-tackles complement to Jerick McKinnon, Ben Goessling writes. Story

In claiming Tate, the Vikings owe him $352,941 for 2014 in guaranteed base salary, plus another $46,875 for each game that he is on the 46-man game-day roster. His 2015 salary is not guaranteed.

Both the Arizona Cardinals and Indianapolis Colts put in a waiver claim for Tate, a league source told ESPN.com's Field Yates, but Minnesota was awarded the running back since they had an inferior record.

Unless he is able to win an appeal of his suspension, Adrian Peterson will miss the rest of the season. The Vikings have used rookie running back Jerick McKinnon as their primary ball carrier in Peterson's absence, and they have also given Matt Asiata plenty of work in passing and goal-line situations.

McKinnon, though, has been dealing with a low back injury and did not practice Wednesday. Asiata also missed practice with a concussion, and the health of both backs -- as well as the loss of Peterson -- could explain the Vikings' quest for more running back depth.

McKinnon leads the Vikings this season with 484 yards, averaging 4.9 yards per carry. Asiata has six rushing touchdowns and one receiving score, but he has averaged only 3.3 yards per carry, and neither he nor McKinnon has eclipsed the 21 carries Peterson had in the Vikings' season opener.

Tate had just two carries for minus-9 yards in last weekend's loss after complaining earlier in the week about the number of carries he was getting in the Browns' three-running-back rotation with Terrance West and Isaiah Crowell.

Andrew Weber/USA TODAY SportsRunning back Ben Tate has been claimed by the Vikings a day after being waived by the Browns.

Tate agreed to a two-year contract worth up to $7 million in the offseason after serving as Arian Foster's primary backup with the Houston Texans the four previous seasons.

He had six carries for 41 yards in his Cleveland debut, which was soured by a knee injury that forced him to miss nearly a month of action. He ended up playing eight games with 106 carries for 333 yards and four TDs.

Since rushing for 202 combined yards in Weeks 5 and 6, Tate averaged 1.7 yards per carry in his last five games, going for 90 yards on 53 attempts.

Tate argued that his skill set hadn't changed, and the running game was an 11-man effort. He told ESPN on Sunday that he wasn't hurt and wasn't aware of any doghouse issues for him.

Tate was used primarily as a third-down back in Sunday's loss to Houston.

ESPN.com's Ben Goessling and Jeremy Fowler contributed to this report.

Meet the Failed Keystone Pipeline Bill's Biggest Winner, and Loser

Despite his sponsoring the House version of the Keystone a bill that died in the Senate Tuesday night, there is perhaps no bigger winner from the legislations defeat than Louisiana GOP Rep. Bill Cassidy.

And there is likely no bigger loser than the states Sen. Mary Landrieu, the Democrat who is on the defensive as she heads to a Dec. 6 runoff election against Cassidy.

Cassidys campaign was quick to seize on the bills defeat, which came up shy of passing by just one vote, as an example of Landrieus failed leadership.

"Senator Mary Landrieus failure to pass the Keystone XL Pipeline this evening is a perfect snapshot of her time as chair of the Energy Committee; a failure, Cassidy campaign spokesman John Cummins said in a statement sent soon after Tuesday nights vote.

But even if the bill had passed, it was unclear how Landrieu, 58, would have translated a legislative victory into an electoral one. With the clock ticking down to the runoff, the embattled Democrat faces several major hurdles on the road to re-election:

1. Landrieus Other Republican Problem

In the general election earlier this month, Cassidy, 57, was already close on Landrieus heels, finishing with 41 percent of the total vote, compared with Landrieus 42 percent. A second Republican in the race, tea party-backed candidate Rob Maness, captured 14 percent of the vote and, in so doing, prevented both Landrieu and Cassidy from clearing the 50 percent threshold necessary to avoid a runoff.

While Maness had no shortage of criticism for Cassidy in the general election, he has since moved to endorse his fellow Republican in the runoff and supported him in building a coalition of tea party support. Conservative stars such as Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., Duck Dynasty star Phil Robertson and former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin have come to Cassidys side since he advanced to the runoff.

2. Democrats Are on the Run

While Cassidy has seen an outpouring of new Republican endorsements and support, Landrieu is waging a lonely battle as the national Democratic Party licks its wounds after a wave of defeats earlier this month. Perhaps the biggest blow came when the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee pulled back a previously reserved $2 million worth of television advertising from Louisiana after the general election.

3. #WhiteVoter Problems

Landrieu has a problem with white voters, who voted overwhelmingly Republican in Louisiana two weeks ago. She needs to get close to 30 percent of the white vote in order to win in next months runoff. But according to exit polls, she only captured 18 percent of that constituency Nov. 4. In 2008, by contrast, she won with 33 percent of the white vote.

Although Louisiana saw a record turnout of nonwhite voters in this years general election, of whom nearly 9 out 10 voted for Landrieu, that constituency is not enough to secure a victory for Landrieu without a complimenting segment of the white vote.

4. This Year Is Not Like the Others

Runoffs are hardly unchartered territory to Landrieu, who has won two out of three of her previous victories this way (one in 1996 and again in 2002). Its a point her campaign emphasizes as Landrieu heads to her third. She's done it before, and she'll do it again, campaign manager Ryan Berni said in a memo sent to supporters earlier this month. In 2002 in particular, Republicans had a big win, and President Bush was at his peak approval ratings, yet Mary still found a way to pull through.

In some ways, 2002 was similar to 2014. Like this years midterms, the GOP enjoyed a wave of victories in 2002 and gained a new majority in the Senate at a time when then-President George W. Bush enjoyed broad popularity. But Landrieu managed a surprise win.

Before entering the 2002 runoff, she had run a campaign that emphasized her similarities to the then-popular Republican president. She rallied her base to the polls in December, after many of those voters had sat out the general election.

This year, however, the bigger problem is that her base is increasingly small because of changes in the Louisiana electorate since 2002. The state has grown increasingly red in the past 12 years and 19 percent of the Orleans Parish, which was pivotal in securing her 2002 victory, permanently relocated after Hurricane Katrina.

Giancarlo Stanton is too good for the Marlins that goes for Pablo Sandoval, too

Giancarlo Stanton will have a long, lonely and filthy rich life in Miami.

Itsimpossible to trust the Marlins decision makers on this one. Stantons new 13-year, $325 million contract apparentlycomes with an assurance from management that the Marlins will go all out trying to build a steady winner andconsistently bring in top-grade talent so that Stanton wont stand alone on a hapless club.

Baloney.

This is Jeffrey Loria, after all. To reiterate: baseballs sketchiestowner who cant be trusted on any level. The man who ran the Montreal Expos into the ground and out of the country; conned South Florida taxpayers into financing a stadium with the phony promise that ballpark revenues would be used to form competitive teams; and dismantled his roster after only one season the last time he made significant player investments.

When Robinson Cano signed for $240 million over 10 years in Seattle last winter, I applauded the Mariners because I had a hunch they were making a serious push to relevance. I dont get that feeling at all with Loria or his yes-man stepson David Samson now that Stanton agreed to stay long term with the biggest contract in American sports history, which will be announced this week.

If Pablo Sandoval signs in Miami, I might reconsider, buthes too smart for that. How can an owner who knows more about breaking up teams than building them, who has been dinged by the union for pocketing revenue-sharing checks suddenly be all in on something hes never been all in on?

Stanton has a no-trade clause, which Loria never granted previously because he knew hed dump his high-paid guys (who made good-faith commitments to Miami) the second things werent going right. To somewhat protect himself from Lorias fire-selling ways, Stanton has an opt-out aftersix years, a ticket to free agency.

Good luck to Stanton, a dangerous hitter and good guy who tweeted after the last fire sale, Alright, Im p****d off!!! Plain & Simple. With all that money devoted to a single player, and with Lorias shady past at the forefront, case after case proving he cares little about earning respect from players or communities, Stanton is taking the biggest $325 million risk in history.

Kristen Stewart Attends BFF Riley Keough's Bachelorette Party, Rocks Signature ...

No nip slips here!

Kristen Stewart was back in her signature hipster attire when she recently celebrated close friend Riley Keough's bachelorette party, which took place at the famed Madonna Inn in San Luis Obisbo, Calif.

The 24-year-old actress, who first met Riley when the pair filmed 2010's The Runaways together, was snapped strolling outside the establishment with a group of five gal-pals, including Keough, who were all sporting similar glammed-out grunge looks. Stewart rocked her favorite Vans sneakers, matching black skinny jeans, a denim jacket and a basic white tee while her BFF wore a cozy sweater and jeans.

VIDEO: Kristen Stewart talks life post-Twilight

While Kristen and Riley have clearly maintained a close relationship since filming the Floria Sigismondi-directed flick, some fans previously speculated that their friendship was on the rocks after Keough was rumored to be dating Kristen's ex, Robert Pattinson.

However, the redhead's rep debunked the dating rumors back in July 2013, and just three months later, her mother, Lisa Marie-Presley shot down the fabricated reports during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live.

"I don't want to say who she's with...I will say who she's not with and that is a complete lie, and the silliest thing I've ever heard, is that she was with Robert Pattinson because her andKristen Stewartare like best friends,"Elvis Presley's daughter told host Andy Cohen."So that was the craziest rumor that I will put to bed."

Robert Pattinson rumors aside, the 25-year-old stunner is very much engaged toAustralian stuntman Ben Smith-Petersen, whom she is said to have met while filming Mad Max: Fury Road. Smith-Petersen announced the couple's engagement in August via his Facebook page, sharing a pic of his bride-to-be's stunning engagement ring.

Meanwhile, Kristen Stewart is still seemingly riding the single train following her 2013 split with Pattinson. Her ex is currently dating British singer FKA Twigsthe actor's first apparent true romance since he and K.Stew called it quits.

The two both attended the Hollywood Film Awards on Friday (where Stewart suffered a nip slip onstage!), although we're told the exes didn't cross paths.
