Reflecting on 72-win Bulls: Every game was "like a playoff game"

Golden State Warriors vs Chicago Bulls - Full Game Highlights | Jan 20, 2016 | NBA 2015-16 Season

CHICAGO -- The respect is there.

The 1995-96 Chicago Bulls, the team that set an NBA record by going 72-10 in the regular season and winning an NBA championship, is watching what the 2015-16 Golden State Warriors are doing with equal parts pride, awe and angst. The Warriors come into Wednesday night"s game against this version of the Bulls with a 38-4 record. They"ve been compared to the Bulls at every turn, especially since they began the season on an improbable and record-setting 24-0 winning streak.

  • Steph vs. MJ. Draymond vs. The Worm. Steve Kerr vs. ... Steve Kerr? The Golden State coach breaks down a would-be epic clash between the 2015-16 Warriors and 1995-96 Bulls.

  • In 1995, the Chicago Bulls embarked on the greatest season in NBA history. Twenty years later, we"re reliving Chicago"s magical 72-10 season with a game-by-game breakdown.

  • Are 73 wins within reach for Golden State? We"re tracking the Warriors" pursuit of history as they chase the 1995-96 Bulls.

But before any comparisons are drawn between the two super teams, the Bulls want to make one thing very clear: If these two teams could have jumped into some kind of dream machine and met at the same time to play against each other, there is little doubt in the Bulls" collective wisdom what would have happened.

"I"ll bet you out of, I don"t know, 15 players, probably 16 would say that we would beat them," said former Bulls swingman Toni Kukoc, who now serves as an ambassador for the Bulls.

As confident as Kukoc and some of his other teammates are -- both in the feeling that they were the better all-around team and that their 72-win total will continue to stand even after this season -- the Warriors" play has made many of the former Bulls think about their record more than ever.

"I"ve thought a lot more this year about the 72-10 season than I have in the past because they"re so close to doing it," former Bulls center Bill Wennington said. "Now they"ve just picked up their fourth loss in Detroit the other day, so I"d lie to you if I say I wasn"t happy about it. But records and rules are made to be broken. It"s going to happen one day. The longer it lasts, the better it is. But they"re a great team, they play in a great system, they move the ball well, they play together well ... they"re fun to watch."

At 38-4 entering Wednesday"s game, the Warriors have fallen off the 73-win pace after their loss to the Pistons on Saturday. But Golden State still has a 14.3 percent chance to win 70 games, according to ESPN"s Basketball Power Index, up from 7.9 percent following their 132-98 thrashing of the Cavaliers on Monday.

Kukoc called the Warriors" play "beautiful." Former Bulls guard Randy Brown said what Golden State has accomplished so far this season has been "quite scary." Wennington, the radio color commentator for the Bulls, sees the joy the Warriors play with and notices the similarities.

Michael Jordan, talking with the media after the Bulls won their 70th game on April 16, 1996, set the tone early for their record-setting season.ERIC CHU/AFP/Getty Images

"It"s comparable in the way that they play together," Wennington said. "They"re having fun out there. And it looks like they genuinely like each other"s company. Everyone understands what their role is on their team. And so in that way, I think they"re very comparable because guys are going out there, everyone"s playing real well.

"Whether they have a starting role or they play five to 10 minutes a game role, whoever"s out there is doing their job but having fun doing it. That was very much what we did. Hey, I wanted to start, I wanted Luc Longley"s job, but I understood what my job was and I was going to go out and do what I had to do, and the same with Randy Brown, Jud Buechler and Steve Kerr. We all wanted to play more, but that"s a good thing. You want guys that want to play more, but also guys that understand what their role is on the team, what they have to do."

The tone for that 1995-96 season was set early by Michael Jordan. Like Stephen Curry has done for the Warriors after earning the first MVP award of his career last season, Jordan was the one who led the way from the outset of that magical season, leading the league with 30.4 points a game to go along with 20.4 win shares and tying David Robinson in Player Efficiency Rating with 29.4. And like the Warriors have surely used the perceived slight that they were lucky in their path to the NBA title last season because they stayed healthy and didn"t have to face the Spurs or Clippers in the playoffs, the 1995-96 Bulls had their own motivation.

Toni Kukoc has no doubt that the Jordan-led 1995-96 Bulls would beat the 2015-16 Warriors.Andrew D. Bernstein/NBAE/Getty Images

"I remember Michael in training camp, he said every game was going to be like a playoff game to him," Brown said. "And I"m pretty sure you guys remember [the Bulls] had just lost to Orlando the season before [in the 1995 Eastern Conference finals] and during training camp he said every game is a playoff game, and that"s the way we approached it. We had a veteran team. We had a system in play. We had limited injuries, we were lucky with that, and I just remember we were more serious than we were from the other two title teams. That "95-"96 team was all business."

In their first full season with Jordan back from his first retirement, the Bulls led the NBA in points per game (105.20), offensive efficiency (115.2) and defensive efficiency (101.8). They had 13- and 18-game winning streaks before going 11-1 through the first three rounds of the playoffs on the way to defeating the Seattle Supersonics 4-2 in the NBA Finals.

The confidence of those record-breaking Bulls" isn"t rooted in cockiness. It"s cemented by the fact that they had Jordan, arguably the greatest player of all time, as the centerpiece and a host of athletic and versatile players who could play multiple spots, much like the Warriors now.

"... during training camp [Jordan] said every game is a playoff game and that"s the way we approached it. We had a veteran team. ... and I just remember we were more serious than we were from the other two title teams."

Randy Brown

"Klay Thompson you could say is like Scottie Pippen," Wennington said. "Draymond [Green] could be the Dennis [Rodman], but we had Toni. Everyone forgets how good Toni was and what he really meant to the team. But they"ve got some great players and guys filling into holes around them."

The Warriors have Andre Iguodala, an athletic wing who spent time guarding LeBron James during last season"s Finals and has been a vital player off the bench for Golden State the past two seasons. The Bulls could counter with Ron Harper, another athletic wing, who his teammates believe would have drawn the assignment of guarding Curry.

Current Bulls head coach Fred Hoiberg reiterated Tuesday that he believes Curry is the best shooter the league has ever seen, but Kukoc doesn"t believe Curry should be considered the game"s best player.

"There are people [who] think that he"s the best player in the league," Kukoc said. "It"s hard to argue that he is the best player, but he is certainly the best scorer, the best shooter, very, very talented ball-handling guy and he uses every bit of it. It"s a pleasure to watch him. But if you put complete basketball from a defensive standpoint, a rebounding standpoint, and all that, you can"t ... I don"t think you can compare [him to] LeBron or some other player. I would even put in [Bulls guard Jimmy] Butler. These two-way players, defensively and offensively are really good."

Brown, who made a name for himself as a defensive player during the Bulls" second three-peat and currently serves as an assistant coach on Hoiberg"s staff, isn"t certain if he could have slowed down Curry. Brown credited Jordan and Harper with helping him become a better defensive player, but he knows that Curry is playing a different game than most of his peers.

Winning 70 games became a reality on April 16, 1996 when the Bulls passed the 1971-72 Lakers" 69 victories.Jonathan Daniel/Allsport/Getty Images

"I"m not sure if angles would probably work with Stephen Curry today," Brown said. "He"s got different angles. It would have been different with Ron Harper, because he"s long, he was smart; but I"m seeing Stephen Curry, he"s doing it against small, medium, large, it"s not mattering to him. So the angle part with him probably wouldn"t make a difference."

The former Bulls all acknowledge Curry"s greatness as a scorer and also note how big of an adjustment it would be to play against Golden State now because of the way the league has changed with no more handchecking. But the new rules would also have helped Jordan"s game.

"Of course, I think the game would have been better for Michael, because he would have slowed the game down by living at the free throw line," Brown said. "We would have actually had to adjust by using our length a little bit more."

The beauty of the Warriors" game is that, much like the Bulls from 20 years ago, they make teams adjust to them. They play their own style and force opponents into a game they aren"t comfortable with. The Warriors have the killer instinct and the confidence to break the will of the team they are facing on most nights, a mantle the Bulls earned during their record-setting campaign.

"Cleveland tried to play them physical, and they just got out of their game so much that they couldn"t do anything about it," Kukoc said of the Warriors" rout of the Cavaliers on Monday.

The irony and importance that their former teammate Kerr is now the head coach of the Warriors isn"t lost on any of his former teammates. Kerr hasn"t coached a game yet this season as he recovers from offseason back surgery, but he has set the foundation for the success interim head coach Luke Walton and his players are having this season. It remains unclear when Kerr will return to the sidelines, but he still plays a major role in the Warriors" success.

"The second half of the season is a lot harder than the first half of the season ... in the end [Steve Kerr] is going to remind them that the record doesn"t matter. It"s the ring at the end that matters."

Bill Wennington

"I think it"s very important," Wennington said. "I think Steve knows exactly what it takes and the focus that you need to have so he can be there in the locker room. And I know he goes to all the home practices and he"s there a lot to settle the guys down and say, "Hey, this is great, but you got to be focused." The second half of the season is a lot harder than the first half of the season ... in the end he"s going to remind them that the record doesn"t matter. It"s the ring at the end that matters."

The ring might matter most, but the former Bulls hope that they can keep their record a bit longer.

"It might be a little champagne flowing when they lose that 11th game," Brown said with a smile. "I wouldn"t mind.

"As they say, they"re not focusing on the record as well; I think they"re focusing on playing good basketball. And if that turns into wins, so be it for them."

Returning stars Seth Rogen, Zac Efron and Rose Byrne are joined by Chlo Grace Moretz for Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising, the follow-up to 2014s most popular original comedy. Nicholas Stoller again directs in a film that follows what happens when the will of parenthood goes against the bonds of sisterhood.

Now that Mac (Rogen) and Kelly Radner (Byrne) have a second baby on the way, they are ready to make the final move into adulthood: the suburbs. But just as they thought theyd reclaimed the neighborhood and were safe to sell, they learn that the new occupants next door are a sorority even more out of control than Teddy (Efron) and his brothers ever dreamed of being.

Tired of their schools sexist, restrictive system, the unorthodox ladies of Kappa Nu have decided to start a house where they can do whatever the h**l they want. When Shelby (Moretz) and her sisters, Beth (Kiersey Clemons) and Nora (Beanie Feldstein), find the perfect place just off campus, they wont let the fact that its located on a quiet street stand in their way of parties as epic as the guys throw.

Forced to turn to the one ex-neighbor with the skills to bring down the new Greeks next door, the Radners alongside best friends Jimmy (Ike Barinholtz) and Paula (Carla Gallo) bring in charismatic Teddy as their secret weapon. If he can infiltrate the sorority and charm his way through it, the thirtysomethings will shutter the Kappas home. But if they think that their neighbors are going down without a fight, they have severely underestimated the power of youthful ingenuity and straight-up crazy.

A peek into a top tech attorney"s pitch to lure Bay Area technology jobs to Atlanta

Taylor Swift plays DC: Your Swiftie forecast for Monday night"s #1989TourDC concert

Please Sign In and use this article"s on page print button to print this article.

John Yates, a top tech attorney with Atlanta law firm Morris, Manning & Martin, often more

Bay Area residents have long seen the newspaper ads and billboards from other states and cities eager to persuade the region"s employers that they should be doing business elsewhere.

There was Fargo, N.D."s pitch to Bay Area businesses that looked likely to prove six degrees of separation. (That city"s average temperature in January is just six degrees.) Then there"s our neighbor to the north, Canada, that isn"t about to pass up an opportunity to give its tech sector a boost.

John Yates, a top tech attorney with Atlanta law firm Morris, Manning & Martin, often more

The nation that makes Fargo look downright balmy in January at one point posted a billboard along a Silicon Valley highway letting immigrant tech workers know that if they can"t get visas to work in the United States, well, welcome to Canada.

Often the courtship between economic recruiters wooing Bay Area businesses occurs behind closed doors. But Atlanta-based RentPath"s decision this week to close up shop in San Francisco led to an opportunity to speak with one of the top tech attorneys in Georgia"s capital city. (Full disclosure: I"m a former business reporter in Atlanta and the city remains one of my favorites.)

I was eager to hear details of his Atlanta pitch, the tech sectors that he"s targeting in the Bay Area, and the questions he gets about doing business in his hometown.

As for the pitch, I asked him whether he just tells Bay Area tech employers the median salary for tech workers in Atlanta, case closed.

"The salary differential is a well-known story," said John Yates, head of the technology group at Atlanta law firm Morris, Manning & Martin. He spends a lot of time telling Atlanta"s story, rattling off a list of strengths: the nation"s busiest airport and all the flights that come with that designation, mild weather and a burgeoning tech sector.

In speaking with Yates and a tech worker who recently moved from the Bay Area to Atlanta, it was surprising how quickly they conceded that the Bay Area is a special place.

"There"s no other place quite like Silicon Valley," Yates said, adding that he has been impressed with the region"s startup ecosystem since his first visit here in 1979 to see his sister, who was involved in a tech startup.

And before alarms start ringing in the Bay Area, Zillow (NASDAQ: ZG) Chief Economist Svenja Gudell, who tracks migration patterns and home prices, says, "For every two people you hear are leaving San Francisco for Portland or Seattle, there are three others moving to the Bay Area."

That"s not deterring Yates. He has played an unofficial role as an ambassador for Atlanta"s business community for more than three decades and isn"t shy about touting his hometown. He has scheduled about 25 meetings that will involve connecting with approximately 60 business leaders while he"s in town next week. He"s spending half his time in San Francisco and the rest essentially as a door-to-door salesman among the venture capital firms that line Sand Hill Road.

"Venture capitalists tell us they like to start companies in Silicon Valley and grow them in Atlanta," Yates says proudly.

For good reason, Bay Area residents cast a wary eye on visitors from the South eager to demonstrate a little southern hospitality. After all, a visit almost 20 years ago from one of the South"s biggest cheerleaders, banker Hugh McColl, ended up with him taking the Bank of America name and headquarters back home with him to Charlotte.

Then there"s the then-governor of Texas, Rick Perry, whose recruiting forays into California became so frequent that the Bay Area Council issued a press release urging him to go home already. That was back in 2014 just hours before Perry delivered his formal remarks at the Commonwealth Club that included comparing homosexuality to alcoholism.

His analysis sparked an audible gasp from the audience and reminded many why they don"t live in the Lone Star State.

This month, it appeared that word of last summer"s Supreme Court decision making gay marriage a national right hasn"t yet reached Alabama, or at least that state"s Chief Justice Roy Moore, who recently advised probate judges to stop issuing same-s*x marriage licenses.

And as Alabama goes, so goes California in the opposite direction.

"Social issues rarely come up because Atlanta is known as a pro-business city that supports diversity," said Yates, who acknowledges that there are strongly held opinions on both sides of these controversial issues in Georgia, just as there are across the country.

Atlanta"s business community has a long history of supporting civil rights, often looking at mistakes and missteps made by other cities in deciding how to navigate the issues. Yates was eager to tout this month"s efforts by a business group, Georgia Prospers, that"s drawing supporters from the city"s business community to ward off efforts to make discrimination against LGBT customers legal, echoing the controversy in Indiana that had Salesforce.com (NYSE: CRM) CEO Marc Benioff planning to airlift affected employees out of that state as part of an effective campaign to fight discriminatory legislation.

The Georgia Prospers initiative has garnered support from major Atlanta employers, including Coca-Cola, (NYSE: KO) of course, as well as Home Depot, (NYSE: HD) Delta Air Lines, (NYSE: DAL) Google, (NASDAQ: GOOG) Bank of America (NYSE: BAC) and Wells Fargo. (NYSE: WFC)

"From our burgeoning status as the Hollywood of the East Coast, to new companies moving here and other companies growing here we all win when our state can attract and retain good businesses and entrepreneurs," touts the Georgia Prospers website, which notes that "Georgia"s business owners understand the fundamental value that"s at the bedrock of our society: We always have to treat others the way we"d want to be treated."

I asked Yates what tech sectors are on his calling card.

"Fintech is big for us, especially in payments," he said before moving on to Atlanta"s strengths in cybersecurity, data analytics and health-care technology.

Asked what he considers to be Atlanta"s sharpest rivals in winning Bay Area jobs, Yates rattles off a number of cities and their disadvantages in the good-natured spirit that one might also use to defend their favorite sports team.

"There"s Dallas-Fort Worth, but then you"re in Texas; there"s Austin, still in Texas; Boston, the weather; D.C., nice weather but it does get very hot," Yates says.

I asked Yates whether his mission reflects the attitude of Texans, who upon hearing that Charles Schwab (NYSE: SCHW) was moving jobs from San Francisco to their state, urged the brokerage firm to move the jobs but keep the Californians. Yates laughed and said that it"s often a mix of transferring key employees to Atlanta while hiring others locally.

There"s definitely the demand for tech talent. When Yates once alerted his LinkedIn network of some tech talent moving from the Bay Area to Atlanta, he promptly got 40 responses that echoed the first missive: "Please send them to me."

Yates told me of one couple, a husband and wife who work as product designers in technology.

"They want to start a family and own a home. That can happen in Atlanta," Yates said.

I decided to hear firsthand from these folks, so I called 31-year-old Chase Curry, whose wife is expecting their first child. They moved back to Atlanta in October, after spending two years here, trading life in San Francisco"s Hayes Valley neighborhood for their home in Atlanta"s historic Kirkwood neighborhood.

Curry, who works for GoPro, (NASDAQ: GPRO) said he had to defend the decision to return to Atlanta with some of his Bay Area friends and colleagues.

"I was born and raised in the South, and there were things I missed. When you grow up in a place, there are small, subtle things that you don"t realize you"re going to miss," Curry said. "Atlanta is essentially a forest with tall buildings scattered about.

"One thing I missed was hearing crickets chirp when I went to bed at night," Curry said.

No doubt, there will be plenty of Bay Area economic development officials eager to tell the region"s tech leaders that Atlanta is the place to be if they want to hear crickets chirp. (With apologies to all my friends in Atlanta.)

Reporter: Tonight, hundreds of searchers braving brutal cold, combing the woods for any sign of 2-year-old Noah Chamberlin, now missing for a sixth day in rugged terrain west of Nashville. People have just been praying that this child will miraculously be okay. Reporter: The toddler vanished on Thursday afternoon while on a hiking trip with his grandmother. Conditions so cold, authorities only allowing people to search for an hour at a time. Officials say the search will go on, but there"s snow and sleet on the way. That snow already hitting Omaha, Nebraska, making striving near impossible. Meanwhile, two-thirds of the country tonight shivering in bone-chilling cold. This morning in Chicago, it was 2 below and felt like negative 13. At those temperatures, frostbite can set on exposed skin in just 30 minutes. Remember Glenn Frey With These 10 Great Videos: Live, Interviews And More

"In Memory of Glenn Frey " Eagles Hotel California

Today (Jan. 18) Eagles founding member Glenn Frey died at the age of 67. Collaborating with the likes of Don Henley and Joe Walsh, the vocalist and multi-instrumentalist performed on some of rock"n" roll"smost iconic songs with Eagles. After they broke up in 1980, Frey enjoyed a successful solo career andhoned his acting skills, performing in shows like Miami Vice and films such asJerry Maguire. Eagles reformed in 1994, and Frey continued his duties -- both live and in the studio -- until the end of his life.
