TV Tonight, Aug. 16: Show Me a Hero debuts

HBO Miniseries: Show Me a Hero – Justice Trailer (HBO)

Show Me a Hero: As TV projects go, pedigrees dont get much better than this. Youve got David Simon, who created one of the best TV shows ever in The Wire, as showrunner. An Oscar winner, London, Ont.-born Paul Haggis, directs. And Oscar Isaac, who earned raves for Inside Llewyn Davis and snagged a role in the hotly anticipated new Star Wars franchise, is the lead actor. The supporting cast are no slouches either, with Alfred Molina, Winona Ryder, LaTanya Richardson Jackson and Catherine Keener on board. The miniseries dramatizes a real-life battle over public housing in 1980s Yonkers, N.Y. (HBO at 8)

Teen Choice Awards: If Show Me a Hero is TVs version of high culture, I guess this is the low. Its the annual bash at which celebrities gather to accept surfboards for things like Choice Male and Female Hottie, Choice Movie Liplock and Choice Movie Hissy Fit. The prizes, in the fields of TV, film, music, sports, fashion, comedy and the web, are chosen by teenage fans. Dont kid yourself, the stars know which side their bread is buttered on; theyll be there. The groups 5 Seconds of Summer and Little Mix (featuring one Perrie Edwards, a.k.a. Zayn Maliks ex) are to perform, and Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin) and Josh Peck (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) co-host. (Global at 8)

Humans: Its Season 1 finale time for this eight-part series. While the drama about the interactions between humans and artificially intelligent servants known as synths hasnt been pulling in Walking Dead-level ratings (or even Mad Men ratings, for that matter), it has already been renewed for a second season. In the closer, the fugitive synths are capture by Hobb (Danny Webb), but Laura Hawkins (Katherine Parkinson) and her family come up with a scheme to save Anita (Gemma Chan) and her robot friends. (AMC at 9)
