Martha Karolyi cried when the "Final Five" team was named in her honor

Exclusive: Inside an Olympic dynasty

"Im really not a sentimental person, honestly,"the legendary coachsaid. "Whats happening to me?"

RIO DE JANEIRO The U.S. womens gymnastics team won the Olympics by the largest margin in this scoring era. More impressively, they made Martha Karolyi cry.

From my nature, Im really not a sentimental person, honestly, Karolyi said, deadpan, about 30 minutes after she wiped the tears. Im known for being really tough, so I felt like, whats happening to me, really?

Karolyis assembled squad of Simone Biles, Aly Raisman, Gabby Douglas, Laurie Hernandez and Madison Kocian delivered her overwhelming retirement gifts at the Olympic Arena on Tuesday afternoon.

First, they made good on everyones prediction of a gold-medal cakewalk, hitting 12 for 12 routines. They prevailed by 8.209 points over Russia and by 8.894 over China.

"The Final Five," as they"ve nicknamed themselves, flourished under the pressure to prove they"re still the best in the world

The surprise came after the competition, between Biles final floor exercise and the victory ceremony.

Team captain Raisman walked up to Karolyi and confided in her the team nickname so many had been asking them to reveal. Anticipation had built to learn the follow-up to the popular Fierce Five moniker of 2012.

Raisman, Douglas and squad teased that they"ve chosen a nickname but won"t reveal it until after the team final

This year its the Final Five, Raisman told Karolyi.

The name honors the impending retirement of Karolyi, who at 73 will cede her national-team coordinator role following these Games after 15 years in charge. A successor hasnt been named.

Im very proud and, yes, I cried, were Karolyis first words to a group of American journalists after the victory ceremony. Im not sentimental, but when Aly told me the name of the team is the Final Five, that is the moment.

The name was Biles idea.

And fittingly, as the Texan has been the cornerstone of the program in this Olympic cycle, winning world all-around titles in 2013, 2014 and 2015 and leading the U.S. to dynasty status five straight Olympic or world team titles dating to 2011.

Biles said Karolyi means the world to her.

Shes pushed us harder than anyone else, harder than our coaches, said Biles, who performed on all four events Tuesday and is the massive favorite for the Olympic all-around crown Thursday. Every day in practice, even if youre so close to perfection, she still tells you that you can be better. She does it because she loves us. She just wants the best for us.

Karolyi, who defected from Romania in 1981, is a walking history book of gymnastics. Her first of 11 straight Olympics were in 1976, when she and husband Bela coached Nadia Comaneci to gold in Montreal.

When Karolyi cried in front of Raisman on Tuesday, it marked her first time shedding tears at a Games since Comanecis perfect-10 performance 40 years ago.

Because that was my first Olympics and first Olympic medal, she said. So those are so remarkable moments.

Many will call this team the greatest ever after Tuesday night. Karolyi is inclined to agree.

I almost would like to say yes, just if we think that we have the eight-point [margin over] the next team, she said.

The current scoring system was implemented in 2006, so it is hard to compare eras.

After a confident training session, the U.S. women"s gymnastics team does something pretty unusual: take a day off

It wasnt that long ago that the U.S. women struggled during Romanias reign.

After finishing sixth at the 1999 World Championships, Bela was lured out of retirement to revive the program.

He passed the baton to Martha in 2001, and slowly the Americans surged past the Romanians, Russians and Chinese. Monthly national-team camps at the peacock-and camel-filled Karolyi Ranch in New Waverly, Texas, provided the foundation.

The U.S. rhythmic gymnastics group found some exotic new training partners during their recent training trip to the Karolyi Ranch.

The U.S. streak of five straight Olympic or world team titles is the best stretch of success since Romania won seven of nine Olympic or world titles between 1994 and 2004.

Before that, the Soviet Union won eight straight Olympic team titles from 1952 to 1980.

The Russian pipeline has been drying up. Romania didnt even qualify a full team for Rio. China put all its eggs in the 2008 Beijing Olympic basket and then dropped off.

I think at this moment we can say that United States dominates the world of gymnastics, Karolyi said. I think thats probably comparable with the other era when first Russia was dominating and then Romania took over and dominated for several years.

But can the U.S. sustain this level of dominance under the scrutinizing eyes of a different coordinator?

One constant will remain those team camps at the Karolyi Ranch. USA Gymnastics recently purchased 36.2 acres of gymnastics facilities at the 2,000-acre ranch.

Martha and Bela plan to visit Romania in retirement, but the ranch will remain their permanent home.

Maybe I pop in the gym and see if they are going in the right direction, Karolyi said.

It wasnt totally clear if she was kidding.

HBO and LiveNation have partnered to bring an epic Game of Thrones concert series across the nation, starring composer Ramin Djawadi.

But the Game of Thrones Live Concert Experience is determined to titillate more than just your ears. (Music-only concerts are so Age of Heroes!) The tour, announced today, will incorporate both audio and visual elements into the stunningly elaborate production.

Powered by Ramin Djawadis remarkable score, the Game of Thrones Live Concert Experience will visit 28 cities around the United States. The show will bringing fans an immersive music and visual experience that will bring the Seven Kingdoms to life on a scale never seen before, HBO says.

The preview image, complete with the architecture of Astapor and a heck of a lot of fire, suggests that the event will be every bit as transportive as promised.

(Were going to pretend those are totally real Unsullied on the drums.)

Using state-of-the-art technology, Game of Thrones composer Ramin Djawadi, along with a full orchestra and choir, will take fans on a musical journey through the realm, HBO says.

And expect something new along with the familiar visuals. The concert will recreate the various realms found throughout Westeros and Essos as well as showcase footage from the show in addition to all new imagery created exclusively for the tour.

For seven years, Ramin has been blowing our mind with his musics force, subtlety, and endless inventiveness, say Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. The concert, they feel, will be unique in the history of concert tours, an eye-popping, ear-splitting, phantasmagoric blend of the shows visuals and Ramins powerful compositions. We are more excited for it than anyone.

Tickets for the Game of Thrones Live Concert Experience go on sale on Aug. 13 at LiveNation.com. The tour will kick off on Feb. 15 in Kansas City and conquer the American realm, visiting cities like Chicago, Philadelphia, Detroit, New York, Houston, and Los Angeles, to name a few.

Though Game of Thrones fans may have been sobered recently by the news that the epic HBO series will conclude after two more, shorter seasons, the promise of the concert is sure to perk up the spirits. Who knows? Maybe well even get a dragon.

Mallory Pugh becomes youngest American to score

Mallory Pugh - Mountain Vista, USA Soccer Forward - Interview - Sports Stars of Tomorrow

Mallory Pugh became the youngest American soccer player to score in the Olympic Games when she put the U.S. ahead 2-1 Tuesday against Colombia.

Pugh, an 18-year-old from Highlands Ranch, began the game on the bench, but came in for Megan Rapinoe in the 33rd minute with the U.S. trailing 1-0.

In the 60th minute, with the score 1-1, Pugh took a shot from inside the penalty area that was blocked by teammate Christen Press. Pugh gathered the ball, dribbled toward the penalty spot and buried a left-footed shot past the Colombian defense.

Moments later, Pugh appeared to have scored a second goal but was called offside.

Colombia later tied the match, which ended 2-2.

Pugh, the 2015 Gatorade national player of the year, last weekbecame thesecond-youngest U.S. womens soccer player in history to compete in the Olympics at 18 years, 3 months and 5 days. Only Cindy Parlow was younger (18 years, 2 months, 13 days) in 1996.

Pokmon GO Update Replaces Nearby With Sightings Feature

NEW POKEMON GO TRACKING UPDATE EXPLAINED! w/ NintenDome

Niantic has released a new Pokmon GO update, available to those playing the augmented reality app on iOS and Android devices.

While the update seemingly had prioritised delivering bug fixes, it has also changed the Nearby Pokmon tracking feature. This has now been renamed to Sightings, and presents Pokmon that have appeared near to the player with tufts of grass.

Niantic has explained that they are testing a variation of the Nearby Pokmon feature with a subset of users. During this period you may see some variation in the nearby Pokmon UI.

Reddit has been trying to pinpoint exactly how this works. User AlbelTelWicked has produced the most credible theory, in that it scans the players nearby area approximately every 15 seconds and any new Pokmon will appear within the list. If a Pokmon is no longer detected by the scan or if the player moves too far away, it will be removed.

We wont know an exact distance, but they estimate that the scan reaches 700 feet (200 metres) around the player, which is similar in scale to that seen with Nearby.

Rio 2016 Olympics men"s 10m synchro final - live: Tom Daley and Daniel Goodfellow win bronze and GB"s fourth medal

Iwan Thomas On Tom Daley"s Olympic Medal And What It"s Like To Come Fourth | Good Morning Britain

Goodfellow is 19, comes from Cambridge. Our Ben Bloom who"s a lorra lorra laughs, went to meet him:

Without a regular partner and opting not to contest the event in 2015, for Daley this time last year it looked like any hopes of finally claiming an elusive Olympic synchro title had disappeared forever.

Step forward Goodfellow, the 19-year-old hoping to be the solution to Daleys troublesome synchronised career.

I had a season and a half out because of nerve problems in my shoulder and I couldnt even get in the pool, Goodfellow said.

After I came back from injury there was a pre-season camp last October and the coaches said there was an opportunity for someone to do synchro with Tom if they were able to keep up with him.

I jumped at it. Id been out for so long I think it motivated me to take the opportunity more.

When you have the chance to do synchro with Tom, who is a big icon in the sport, theres always going to be a bit of pressure but I was just so happy to be given the opportunity.

Tim Tebow is already down 0-2 in the count -- Bud Shaw"s Spinoffs

Tim Tebow is pursuing a pro baseball career after achieving dream of being a NFL QB - "The Herd"

CLEVELAND, Ohio The Indians" Twitter feed gave us a picture of Tim Tebow in an Indians uniform Tuesday.

And then posted this:

Hey, if Terry Francona could help mold Michael Jordan into a big-league hitter while managing the Birmingam Barons, why not Tebow?

Oh, right. He couldn"t help Jordan become a big-league hitter.

Jordan batted .202 for Birmingham in 1994 with 114 strikeouts in 127 games.

The reason? Unlike machines, pitchers cannot be programmed to throw only fastballs.

Or bribed with a round of golf at Pebble Beach.

Now Tebow has been in Arizona pursuing his dream of playing Major League Baseball, according to his agent.

Tebow is 29. The Angels considered drafting him a decade ago. He last played in 2005 as a high schooler.

Now he has put aside his pro football aspirations to see if he can hit 95 mile an hour fastballs and breaking pitches that fall off the table.

Apparently because playing quarterback in the NFL just wasn"t enough of a challenge.

Tebow is attempting what USA Today called the "hardest thing to do in sports" on a recent list.

Other things considered easier than hitting a big-league pitch: pole vaulting, completing the Tour de France, landing a quad in figure skating, skiing the Olympic downhill and saving a World Cup penalty kick.

And, of course, writing an interesting sports column.

I thought I"d say it before you did.

There is no reason not to wish Tebow well. He seems to be a fine person and a tremendous success story as one of the greatest college football players in history.

There is reason to doubt he"ll make it to the majors.

It"s not because Jordan struggled to hit a Double A curve ball in Birmingham.

It"s because hundreds of thousands of great athletes couldn"t hit Double A pitching if their lives depended on it.

Comedian Larry David, who created "Seinfeld," reiterated on the Dan PatrickShow that he thinks he could become an offensive coordinator in the NFL.

I like his chances better than Tebow"s.

David"s claim might not be so far fetched when you consider all the seasons since 1999 the Browns have relied on a game plan about nothing.

Former NBA guard Nate Robinson got a tryout with the Seattle Seahawks in June. Robinson played for the University of Washington in 2002.

Head coach Pete Carroll said of Robinson"s goal of playing in the NFL: "I think it"s all but impossible."

No, I didn"t like Robinson"s chances better than Tebow"s at age 32. It"s a tie.

In order of probability, it"s Larry David becoming a NFL offensive coordinator, thenTebow making it in MLB and Robinson in the NFL.

If Jordan ever rekindles his hopes of playing PGA Tour quality golf, that still wouldn"t change the rankings.

Demoted Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig shared a Snapchat picture of his Oklahoma City Dodgers partying after a 3-2 loss to the Iowa Cubs.

Apparently after asking himself, WWJD (What would Johnny do?)

Puig, who is supposedly trying to show the Dodgers he"s a more committed player, said via social media, "It"s so funny. We lose today and everybody happy."

So obviously his image repair is well under way.

Former St. Edward and Ohio State lineman Alex Boone, now with the Minnesota Vikings, told a radio audience that he wasn"t a fan of Terrelle Pryor"s when they played together in Columbus.

"I could not stand any minute with him," said Boone. "The kid was so arrogant at the time I hated everything about him."

O-H?

Pryor answered that criticism with a Tweet.

I"d put that in the category of be careful what you wish for.

"When you"re young, you"re different," Pryor told reporters in response to Boone"s comments. "You"re mind is wired completely different. I"m 18 years old meeting this guy."

That"s fair enough.

Unless you"re that rare person who isn"t embarrassed by some aspect of your college days.

Pryor is getting high marks for his work as a transitioning wideout in Browns training camp.

There are stories about Hue Jackson "masterminding" the switch. There are headlines saying Pryor"s wide receiver career is "taking off."

We should probably wait until he has more than one catch as a Browns wideout.

And when he gets two, we should wait a little longer until he shows he can make tough catches over the middle against NFL corners and safeties who are bigger and more seasoned than, say, Nate Robinson.

The keyword in any story praising any NFL player after a scrimmage is "scrimmage."

Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr says it"s "absurd" for anyone to consider Kevin Durant a villain.

"To think of Kevin Durant or Steph Curry or any of our guys as villains, it"s kind of absurd. Especially Kevin," Kerr said Sunday in an interview on ESPN radio. "This is one of the most likeable people in this league. He"s just an awesome human being. What he did in Oklahoma City was just amazing for that community."

Kerr does remember he coaches Draymond Green, no?

Jerry Jones says the Cowboys might just stick with their current quarterback situation rather than trade for a quarterback to play behind starter Tony Romo.

Given Romo"s injury history, this sounds like Jones" best plan since he tried to talk his coaches and front office people into drafting Johnny Manziel instead of Notre Dame offensive tackle Zack Martin.

Nothing is as exciting as watching Team USA meet the challenge that is Venezuela and China basketball in the Olympics.

But if we ever get a chance to see Michael Phelps swim against a wheelbarrow filled with cement, I may change my mind.

Alex Rodriguez made approximately $200,000 per game during the Yankees and Texas Rangers portions of his career.

In a sport where getting a hit 30 percent of the time makes you an All-Star.

Think about that the next time you scream about a NFL player being overpaid.

Unless it"s Jay Cutler. Then go right ahead.

By the way, those circles on Phelps" upper body are the result of cupping, a healing technique used by acupuncturists among others.

And not -- as You Said It readers no doubt instantly suspected -- a byproduct of full contact beer pong.

Missy Franklin tries to look ahead after disappointing start

GoPro: Finding Missy - Part 1 Hawaiian Escape

The best sights from Monday"s action. USA TODAY Sports

Missy Franklin of the USA did not reach the final of the 200 freestyle relay.(Photo: Rob Schumacher, USA TODAY Sports)

RIO DE JANEIRO Missy Franklins signature ear-to-ear grin was gone, replaced by a shaky voice and eyes full of tears.

Four years after her spin as the darling of the London Olympics with five medals, Franklin was trying to understand the catastrophe of Monday night: In her first eventof these Rio Games, she finished last in her 200-meter freestyle semifinal heat and failed to qualify for the final. Her time (1:57.56) was a half-second slower than her preliminary heat swim earlier in the day.

I did the best that I could, Franklin said. Ill talk to my coaches and see what happened. I felt like I tried a lot harder than this morning so to go slower, its just one of those things Ive been trying to wrap my mind around this year, whats been going wrong but I havent been able to figure it out.

You dont always understand everything and understanding isnt always going to bring you peace so its just knowing that Gods with me no matter what and Ive got to keep fighting and keep believing in His plan.

Franklin seemed and truly is confused about this. Her coaches are, too, though they understand its been a challenging four-year stretch for the now 21-year-old. There was the back injury in 2014, and the tough decision to leave Cal to return her former age-group coach Todd Schmitz to train in the leadup to these games. There was the rough transition to the life of professional swimming, and the understanding of how exhausting sponsor and media obligations can be.

It all culminated in a disappointing U.S. trials six weeks ago the first quiver in which Franklin failed to qualify for the Olympic team in two of the five events she swam in London. She missed the chance to defend her gold medal in the 100 backstroke, and in doing so, missed a spot on the medley relay.

Franklin bounced back, securing roster spots in the 200 free, 200 back and the 4x200 relay. According to head U.S. womens coach David Marsh, Franklin then went on to have a very productive training camp.

Shes been looking great at camp; she didnt look as good (Monday) as she did at camp, Marsh said. Her backstroke also looked really great at camp, so were going to ask her to really reset and focus on that, and on the relay situation. Those are the things that are the next priority. Shes had a tough year, and I think we all know that shes wearing it a little bit. Thats not her. Shes best when shes joyful.

Marsh said he hopes Mondays swim is just one bad swim, not a sign of things to come the rest of the week.

But he also knows the weight that Franklin is carrying on her shoulders, which doesnt make preparing for the 200 back and the 4x200 relay any easier.

I think the enormity of being here and the expectations of being here theyre not really measurable, but you certainly can see them all around, Marsh said. Most importantly, her expectations of herself to do this.

Were all just loving on Missy. Shes such a wonderful person. Literally anybody will do anything to help her. Its just small baby steps forward.

Franklins next swim will likely come Wednesday afternoon in the preliminaries of the4x200 relay.
