Tax Free Weekend 2016: Participating States, What To Buy & How To Shop Online

This weekend marks the much-awaited Tax Free Weekend 2016wherein stores offer special tax-free sales. This year, there are 12 states participating in the holiday, which lasts until Aug 7.

Participating States

The states offering the duty-free purchases are as follows:Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Iowa, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Missouri, New Mexico, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas, and Virginia. From opening until the end of the respective sale, you can make all your purchases without having to pay state sales tax.

According to IB Times, below are the dates states are holding the holiday:

  • Alabama: Aug. 5-7 (Note: Only counties on this listare participating.)
  • Arkansas: Aug. 6-7
  • Florida: Aug. 5-7
  • Iowa: Aug. 5-6
  • Louisiana: Aug. 5-6
  • Massachusetts: Aug. 5-6
  • Missouri: Aug. 5-7 (Note: Not everyone is participating so See here for more details.)
  • New Mexico: Aug. 5-7
  • Ohio: Aug. 5-7
  • Oklahoma: Aug. 5-7
  • South Carolina: Aug. 5-7
  • Texas: Aug. 5-7
  • Virginia: Aug. 5-7

In addition, there are states who will participate within the month but at a later time. These would beConnecticut (Aug. 21-27) and Maryland (Aug. 14-20). Meanwhile, these four states dont have sales tax initially so making purchases inAlaska, Montana, New Hampshire, and Delawareis like enjoying theTax Free Weekend 2016 all year-round.

Likewise, it should be noted that three states,Georgia, Mississippi, and Tennessee, already had their respective Tax Free Weekend promos.

What To Buy

Its important to note that NOT EVERYTHING is covered by the holiday. There are rules about what qualifies as a tax-freepurchase.Below is the gist of the sale, per Deal News,which offers more details per state on theincluded sale items.

Typically there is a $100 per item limit on clothing and other items included are school supplies, computer/ computer software, bags, school materials and the like.

Online Shopping

Heavy reports that in most participating states, online purchases are eligible for the tax-free break. Sales will begin online at midnight on the first day of theTax Free Weekend 2016 and endjust before midnight on the last day.

Like shopping in actual stores, the sales are covered by the qualified items rule as online and physical store purchases are not free-for-all.

Per Bankrate, there are eight states Florida, Iowa, New Mexico, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas, South Carolina, and Virginia who have specifically announced that qualifying items can be purchased through multiple channels like mail, online, or by phone. To confirm if your purchases have been given the go for the Tax Free Weekend 2016 rates by checking your checkout cart before finalizing your buy.

Shipping is over and above the tax-free discount but as long as the purchase is logged during the sale period and qualifies, you can enjoy the tax break even if its delivered after the sale period.
