Refugee Olympic Team Gets Opening Ceremony"s Loudest International Ovation

The Olympic Refugee Team: A beacon of hope in Rio

The Refugee Olympic Team watched 204 countries stroll through the Parade of Nations at Friday"s Opening Ceremony before it. But that"s nothing like the sacrifice the athletes made to get to Rio.

And the standing ovations the Refugee Olympic Team received is nothing like anything its athletes have heard in their lives.

Traditionally, nations march in alphabetical order based on the host nation"s language. The host nation enters the stadium last, regardless.

For this year"s parade, the Refugee Olympic Team waited with Brazil, as all other nations marched, a subtle reminder of the lack of identity that comes with being a refugee. However, when the refugees came in between Zimbabwe and Brazil, at spot No. 205, the Rio crowd erupted in cheers perhaps only eclipsed by the host nation itself.

When International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach stepped to the podium, some cheers turned into boos. But Bach used the first-ever Refugee Olympic Team as a reference point for the Olympic spirit.

"We are living in a world of crises, mistrust and uncertainty," Bach said. "Here is our Olympic answer: The 10,000 best athletes in the world, competing with each other, at the same time living peacefully together in one Olympic Village, sharing their meals and their emotions.

"We welcome the Refugee Olympic Team. Dear refugee athletes, you are sharing a message of hope to all of the refugees around the world. You had to flee from your homes because of violence, hunger, or just because you were different. In this Olympic world, we welcome you as an enrichment to our unity and diversity."

The Refugee Olympic Team features six men and four women from four countries -- Syria, South Sudan, Ethiopia and Democratic Republic of Congo -- and will compete in swimming, athletics and judo.

They come from all different, races, religions, cultures and experiences, but for the time being, they bond over their fight for acceptance somewhere in the world.

On Saturday morning, Yusra Mardini, a swimmer originally from Syria, won her 100-meter butterfly heat.

Simone Biles, Gabby Douglas, Aly Raisman in the all-around for USA

RIO DE JANEIRO The lineup for womens gymnastics qualifying was hardly a surprise after podium training on Thursday.

As expected, Simone Biles, Gabby Douglas and Aly Raisman will compete in the all-around. It came down to Raisman and 16-year-old Laurie Hernandez for the last all-around spot.

Hernandez, who went pro earlier this week, was an early favorite to grab an all-around spot after finishing third at U.S. championships and second at trials in July.

Douglas the defending Olympic gold medalist pulled ahead of Hernandez in the past three weeks, making marked improvement in the pre-Olympic training camp.

In podium training, it was clear Raismans gymnastics were better than Hernandezs. A member of the Fierce Five, Raisman has two gold medals and a bronze from the London Olympics. Shes 22 this time around, and shes performing better gymnastics than she was four years ago.

It obviously would mean a lot to me, Raisman said Thursday. I know that it is between me and Laurie, but at the same time, I think that we both kind of have the mindset that weve done everything that we possibly can. We both respect each other for it.

Biles, the three-time world champion and favorite to win multiple golds here, was a virtual lock for the all-around.

The Americans can only send two gymnasts to the all-around final under the two-per-country rule, so someone will be on the outside looking in.

At world championships last year, that was Raisman. Biles and Douglas went on to finish first and second.

The Americans are heavily favored to win a second consecutive team gold in Martha Karolyis final Olympics as national team coordinator. Shes retiring after the competition ends here.

The current team is the best weve ever had, Bela Karolyi, her husband and legendary gymnastics coach, said last month. Its very hard just coming out of my mouth because I never said in my life before big competitions that we are unbeatable or something like that. But at that time, I am saying we are unbeatable in the team competition.

Heres a look at the lineup for the USA:

What the Paul O"Neal videos show

RAW: Footage of Chicago police shooting Paul O’Neal

A Jaguar rolls toward a police SUV on a leafy Chicago street, passing between the SUV and a parked car, striking one.

One officer his gun drawn while still in his vehicle jumps out of the passenger side of the SUV, and as the Jaguar moves past, opens fire.

The officer strafes the scene with bullets, striking his own vehicle at least once, his gunfire passing near another officer standing on grass across the street. As the Jaguar gets farther away from them, both officers fire.

The officers fire some 15 shots in about five seconds.

Video clips released Friday by the Independent Police Review Authority show the chaotic moments surrounding the fatal Chicago police shooting of Paul O"Neal, 18, in the South Shore neighborhood on July 28.

O"Neal, an African-American, was driving the Jaguar convertible that police said had been reported stolen from Bolingbrook. Nine video recordings from police officers" dashcams and body cameras show various aspects of the shooting incident, including officers firing at the fleeing vehicle while other officers appear to be in the field of gunfire and reactions of officers in the shooting"s aftermath.

The videos show officers chasing O"Neal on foot around fences and through a backyard, where police said he was shot. The videos do not show the fatal shot, however, and police have said the officer"s body camera did not capture it.

After striking that first vehicle, the Jaguar eventually barrels head-on into a police SUV. On one recording, an officer can be heard yelling, "Emergency, emergency, let me see your f------ hands, hands up!"

Someone can be seen running away from the crashed Jaguar as police pursue. The officers dart behind homes, shouting their locations to dispatchers along the way. The officers run up driveways and jump fences. One officer struggles to get over a fence and goes around a home instead.

About 20 seconds after the head-on crash, five shots can be heard.

O"Neal was shot in the yard of a home in the 7300 block of South Merrill Avenue.

As officers descend on the wounded O"Neal, they yell, "Get down, get down on the ground!" and "Get your hands behind your back!"

Four officers surround O"Neal, his back and T-shirt soaked in blood. As police handcuff O"Neal, an officer can be heard saying, "F------ shoot at us."

An officer looks through O"Neal"s backpack and finds a screwdriver.

After the shooting, unidentified officers can be heard voicing confusion over what happened.

An officer who repeatedly shot at the Jaguar as it sped away says to another officer, "I shot at the car after it almost hit you."

"The bullets were f------ whizzing by me over here. I don"t know if they were the police or who," said one unidentified officer.

The officer who fired at the Jaguar multiple times can be heard on his own body camera expressing concerns about the shooting"s repercussions.

"F--- man, I"m going to be on the desk for 30 g*****n days now. F------ desk duty for 30 days now," he said. "Motherf-----. I shot. He almost hit him."

Body camera footage from the officer who said he believed he shot O"Neal in the yard indicated that he thought the shots he heard during the vehicle pursuit were coming from the Jaguar as it sped toward him. He acknowledges to another officer that he fired without knowing if O"Neal had a weapon.

"The shots were coming at us as the car was coming at us," he tells the officer. "I didn"t know if he was armed or not."

At another point, the officer claims O"Neal shot at him.

"Dude, I heard shots. I don"t f------ know, man. When he came out the yard, he shot at me," the officer said.

O"Neal was not armed, police said later.

After showing other officers where O"Neal was fired upon, the officer worried aloud about his job, and O"Neal"s life.

"Man, this is so f----- up, man" he said. "I don"t want nothing to happen to that f------ guy, dude. The way s---"s going man, I"m gonna be f------ crucified, bro."

The officer asks if a weapon was found in the car as a supervisor tells him to relax.

"I pray to G*d nothing happens to him," the officer repeats.

At one point, an officer tells other police, "Make sure these are all off," in an apparent reference to their body cameras.

One officer smokes a cigarette, seeming tense and shaken.

"Don"t say anything until the administrative process starts, OK?" another officer tells him.

Oldsmar resident aims for 2020 Olympics ... as a Peruvian

Tokyo Picks New Logo for 2020 Olympics

OLDSMAR

Andre LaCroix has had a busy summer. He graduated from East Lake High, has a girlfriend and social life to manage, and, oh yeah, went to Peru in July and won that country"s national open BMX championship.

And if LaCroix has his way, he"ll be even busier four years from now. As a citizen of both countries, he hopes to be competing for the Peruvian team in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

LaCroix, who trains at the Oldsmar BMX track in Canal Park, has consistently placed in the top 100 riders for USA BMX in his age group for the past five years. With the victory last month in the Peruvian National Championships, he hopes to be positioned to represent his mother"s birth country in four years.

Not only is his mother, Patti, "incredibly proud that he is representing Peru,"" but it is also a feather in the cap for Oldsmar, his hometown whose affinity with BMX has grown right along with Andre. Last year, the city reopened the venue, first created in 2003, with a supercross track that includes a 24-foot high hill for elite riders. The redesigned track is one of only a handful of official USA BMX training tracks in the U.S.

Rick Hayes, a BMX rider and longtime Oldsmar volunteer, has watched LaCroix, 18, grow up at the track.

"We are proud of him,"" Hayes said. "I think the fact that he"s been able to train here, where some of the fastest people race, has also served him well.""

While in Peru, the LaCroix family Andre, Patti, Ken and Andre"s sister, 16-year-old Iliana was busy, touring different landmarks, including Machu Picchu as well as visiting family Patti hasn"t seen since moving to the U.S. more than 30 years ago. However, the biggest thrill was seeing Andre race, Patti said.

"We were all so proud,"" Patti said. "As a mother, of course I get nervous for him, but this is his dream.""

According to his father, the first time LaCroix rode a two-wheeler without training wheels, he was 3.

"Andre started pedaling and didn"t stop,"" Ken said. Later Ken took him to watch races at the Oldsmar track.

"The first time I saw guys flying in the air, I thought it was so cool, and I remember wanting to do it,"" Andre said.

Through elementary school, Patti and Ken encouraged Andre to sample different sports.

"Actually, I always rode the bike, but I also liked playing soccer too, but then around 10 or 11, I chose BMX,"" Andre said. "I knew it was my passion.""

Once in high school, La- Croix successfully found support through equipment sponsors, including Ssquared Bicycles of Palm Harbor.

"Not money sponsors but they really have helped with parts,"" said Ken, who holds the role of primary bike assembler at Andre"s races.

And last year, through his family"s urging, Andre began wearing the logo of the Oldsmar charity Second Basemen, a nonprofit designed to support breast cancer survivors, on his uniform.

"Racing has been a great way to teach Andre how to give back to the community,"" Ken said.

The idea to race for Peru began forming in Andre"s mind as Oldsmar BMX"s new supercross track drew more international riders. He began taking advantage of opportunities to race with athletes from places like Holland, Latvia and Germany when they were training at his home track.

"Being around them has taught me a lot and made me realize it was possible for me to do this,"" he said.

Last fall, he told his parents of his plan. Patti, a naturalized citizen, agreed to work on the required paperwork as Ken contacted the organizations affiliated with international racing.

"It took a lot of calls to different places, consulates, USA BMX and the UCI (International Cycling Union),"" Ken said.

"Peru definitely was interested,"" he said. "The country is kind of new to BMX as far as international racing goes, and they need good racers.""

Andre will officially begin competing as a Peruvian at the beginning of the year, competing throughout South America in the 2017 Latino Americana BMX, held in Argentina, Peru, Bolivia and Chile.

Until then, he plans to complete the USA BMX season, with his next event this month at the Kansas City Mid-America Nationals.

Before that, he hopes to catch as much of the Olympic BMX competition with his friends at BMX Oldsmar.

"Whenever it"s possible, we"ll set up big screens so everybody can watch it,"" said Hayes, who helps manage the track. "It"ll be fun.""

And when LaCroix is facing a race, whether in Oldsmar or on the world"s biggest stage?

"Right before I start, I pray, then I picture the perfect lap. I let it all go through my head, where I"m pedaling and every single jump,"" he said. "Honestly, it seems like it"s 90 percent mental and 10 percent hard work. You really need to know you"re the best.""
