21 Songs Taylor Swift Has Penned About Her Exes

Taylor Swift - Wildest Dreams

They say you should write what you know, and Taylor Swift has always been a confessional songwriter. The newly single star has built an empire by pouring her heartbreaks into her art so if youre new to Taylor fandom (or if you just want to reminisce about some amazing break-up tracks), heres a comprehensive list of all the songs inspired by Taylors menagerie of exes:

"We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together"

This hit single from Red is obviously about Jake Gyllenhaal. From lyrics about the actors love of indie bands to the scarf featured in the music video that is identical to one Swift wore on a date with Gyllenhaal, the public has settled on him being the inspiration behind the track.

"Style"

If Harry Styles" name wasnt already the title of this 1989 track, it would also be notable that the lead in the video for the song looks so much like him.

"Mine"

This track from Speak Now features lyrics about a boy Taylor barely knew. She"d just dated the late Cory Monteith for under a month. If the shoe fits!

"Back To December"

Fans believe this song is about Taylor Lautner, since the track was released from her album Speak Now after the two starred in Valentines Day together.

"I Knew You Were Trouble"

This number from Red is definitively about Harry Styles. After performing it at the Grammys and mocking a British accent, Taylor stated, "Well, it"s not hard to access that emotion when the person the song is directed at is standing by the side of the stage watching."

"All Too Well"

This Red song features lyrics about a scarf Taylor left at Jake Gyllenhaals sister Maggies home. The scarf strikes again.

"Dear John"

Not only is singer John Mayers name featured in the title of the Speak Now song, the lyrics also point to the pairs age difference. Mayer took the song personally and said he felt like writing it was a low blow.

"Better Than Revenge"

This track from Speak Now features lyrics about actresses and vintage dresses, which were a love of actress Camilla Belle. The song was released after Swift candidly explained that the actress had come between her and Joe Jonas.

Begin Again

This track from Red is about a relationship Taylor had high hopes for, but that didnt last. Shed just broken up with Conor Kennedy. Not irrefutable evidence, but

The Last Time

When Taylor and Jake Gyllenhaal began dating, he was romantically linked to two other stars: Rachel Bilson and Anna Kendrick. That makes this Red songs references to wanting to be at the top of her beaus list a little more revealing.

Picture to Burn

This early song must be about ex Jordan Alford since, after watching the music video, former classmates of the pair said it featured lots of references to their relationship. It showed up on her first album Taylor Swift.

Last Kiss

This is another track from Speak Now that is reportedly about Joe Jonas. Fans mainly link these two together because of the timeline of their relationship and the songs release.

Forever & Always

This 2008 track from Fearless came right after her breakup with Joe Jonas. The song features lyrics about staring at her phone and the star revealed that he broke the relationship off over a phone call.

Holy Ground

Another track about Joe Jonas, this time from Red. The lyrics reference New York and one of the only New Yorkers Swift had dated at that point was Joe.

Tim McGraw

This track from Swifts debut album Taylor Swift and is likely about her last high school boyfriend Brandon Borello because it features lyrics about their relationship ending when he went to college which the pairs did.

Our Song

This track was originally performed at her high school talent show, when the star was dating Brandon Borello. It eventually found its way on to Taylor Swift.

Fifteen

Another track about Brandon Borello from Taylor Swift, this song has been pinned to him mainly by process of elimination. Thats who she was dating when she was 15!

Shouldve Said No

Sam Armstrong was a high school boyfriend of Taylors and the one she broke up with because hed been cheating on her. The song was released on Taylor Swift.

Out of the Woods

This 1989 song features phrases about paper airplanes flying and Harry Styles and Taylor both happen to own matching paper airplane necklaces. Case closed.

"Teardrops on my Guitar"

This song from Taylor Swift is about her high school crush Drew Hardwick. His name is right there in the lyrics!

Hey Stephen

This song from Fearless also contains another instance of Taylor just full-on name-dropping. In this case, its Stephen Liles who toured with her in the early days as part of the country duo Love and Theft.
